Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News talks'd be.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
It's coming up. There's only one thing worse than a
wounded All Black, and that is a wounded Springbok. Watch
this space, says Greg. Had you given any consideration to
a wounded Springbok James Macony.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Well, half of them were wounded, especially their back line,
So they'll be they'll be back and we'll add some
impetus if they can get back in time.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
How are you, Poney, I'm great, I'm great, James. It's
been a really busy old sporting weekend with you know,
trying to keep my eyes in all of these different places.
Can we start with the Wallabies that this is a
good thing, isn't it. The Wallaby's going to Alis Park
and winning.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Yeah, and it proves that, look, they are legit on
their day. It proves that if you get a roll
on at that level in some momentum and things clerk,
all these top teams can score you know, four or
five or in the Wallabyes case, six tries in a row.
So there's two things about this game that stood out
for me. I think the Wallabies actually have sneaky Depp.

(01:09):
You know, the bench is quite good, especially in the
front row and the Spells A Nongore, Brendan paying A Morsa.
You know, they've got their own set of version of
the bomb squad and I think they've got a couple
of injuries. When they come back they'll be stronger. And
the Lousies as well, although I like Gleason as well,
and also Tate McDermott. He would start, I think as

(01:29):
halfback in most countries and I think he'd make the
All Blacks. Tate mc dermott.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
You think Tate McDermott would make the All Blacks?

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Yeah, yeah, I think currently I think so, Yes, I
think you would so. I mean, you know, the Reds
half back, he's been really good all year and I
thought he would start, but you know, he's been really
good off the bench for them and was again yesterday.
But South Africa, weirdly, this is a strange thing for
a nation that's a real rugby nation. I think they

(01:57):
don't have that much depth. I think you saw it
last year when Malcolm Marx got injured and they bought
in a hooker who was about thirty five years old.
You know, like they didn't really have a natural successor
and then missing five starters in their back line. Fout
to Clerk, Andre Pollard, the Landi Chas and Kolby, Willie LaRue.
The is are all World Cup win is right, double

(02:17):
World Cup winners in most cases, so possibly actually in
all cases. Yes, So look that they were not at
their best, but it is an incredible comeback all the same.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Ohsolutely. When you score thirty eight un answered points anywhere
to win a game having been twenty odd down, that's amazing.
But at Ellis Park, at that cauldron, incredible, yeah, and
it's yeah, it was great.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Well, well I think the one thing as well that
a number eight and captain Harry Wilson scoring two tries.
He is a talented Test player. He's a bona FID star.
It shows how clueless Eddie Jones was in that World
Cup year dropping him. So you know he's back to
some form. There's some faith, you know from the selectors
and Joe Schmidt, and shout out to Joe Schmidt. I mean,

(03:05):
look he is he's kind of like his own he's
a professor as well, isn't he in his own right? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Yeah, I'm pleased for him too, because he seems like
a decent blow, doesn't he. I mean, David Campese has
been giving him absolute rings ever since he got that job.
I just and I'm sure Josement doesn't care what David
Campezi thinks. But I was, Yeah, I was really pleased
with Josement.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
I mean, Campo is just rent to quote. All the
media know to go to him, and so that's that's
all they do. If they want to get someone to win,
you go to Campo. And I think he's a little
bit out of touch. He's a genius player, but I think,
you know, Rugby's kind of moved on from from his day,
so he needs to He needs to upskill like we
all do, Poney sometimes.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
You know we do. We've got to try different things,
get across different platforms, be flexible exactly as you've done.
You know, you've you've you've evolved as a broadcast. I
used to read you in the Sunday Star Times. Altho,
that guy's got a bit about him and you've diversified
into all platforms.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
It's called desperation and I'm all, I'm here for it.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Mate, Like it's like looking in a mirror, What did
you like of the all blacks, Well.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
I thought maybe just focus on on a couple of things.
One is, I thought Duplessy kit If he was really
good and probably didn't get enough claudits well enough enough
kind of the rubber the green from the ref. I mean,
the reef was calling him off a couple of times,
and I thought, oh no, he was in a really
good position there. But the thing is he is so
quick on the turnover that that refs almost get shocked

(04:35):
that you know he's right there. But wearing that fabled
number seven jersey, that is an absolute pressure cooker situation.
I mean, look for forty years, it's basically gone Michael Jones,
Josh Cromfeld, Richie mccau, Sam Caine, and that's pretty much it.
You know, it's like the number ten jersey for Argentina,
you know, like it's just so tough. And I thought

(04:57):
Duplessy Kitdif he was really good. Did you think that
I did too?

Speaker 2 (05:01):
Yeah, And just on the refereeing thing too, because I
think he used to be a penalty magnet, right, But
I think I think New Zealand referees and Super rugby
referees have worked out that he is able to do
the things that seem you know, unlikely, and I just
wonder whether the international referees have to work the same
thing out.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
Yes, exactly, I think that's the thing. Duplacy codif is
like that. You know, it's probably a Quackersmith's similar build.
He gets in there and those little crevices. He's not huge,
as we know. But I think it's good that we've
ignored what has been in the past a bit of
a sort of height restriction like a roller coaster ride.
You know, you need to be this tool to play
number seven for the All Blacks. Drove that out in
the window. You're just going to think about David Pocock,

(05:42):
George Smith, all the ones, stumpy little sevens around the world,
Neil Back, whoever you want. Duplicitif is excellent. And just
a word about Will Jordan. Look, we talk about him
so often, we need to actually accept he is the
superstar on the team currently and I don't want to
see him move from fallback to help with you know,

(06:05):
covering certain positions are of their injuries. He needs to
stay there and we need to build the team around him.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, I totally agree with that. I totally agree. I
think there is a still of conversation to be had
around eleven and fourteen. But I'm the same as you.
I want Will Jordan wearing fifteen every time he plays.
I totally agree. I totally agree.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
Oh sorry, we're getting Richie Warner back, We're getting you know,
leicster Phone in neuture. There are reinforcements.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Coming absolutely just before we move from the rugby too.
A couple of Texas have made the point that Mike
cron has also been involved over there, and we know
what an effective coach he is with forwards, so yeah,
he has to also be given some plauters. Hey, the
Premier Leagu's underway again. My Liverpool had to win yesterday
against Bournemouth. Alex Paulson wasn't in the match day squad.

(06:50):
Chris Wood's going to have his first game for Forrest tomorrow.
Are you excited about the Premier League being.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Back, Tony? You know, I'm excited, and I actually don't
have a dog in the fight because as a youngster
I supported Arsenal then all the players left and then
I sort of thought, well, it's quite tricky. I didn't
I want my emotions to be ruled by a team
you know, so May twelve thousand miles away or whatever.
So I just went, you know what, I'm just going
to enjoy the Premier League and look, I'm happy for

(07:17):
with what Liverpool did last year. I think Chelsea will
be attending to watch this year. But I was watching
that Liverpool game and really I was wanting to see
whether the Bournemouth goalie was better than Alex Paulson. And
he conceded four goals in the end, but it was
very close until your new signing, Federico Kieza from Italy

(07:39):
came on and scored the go ahead goal. Now this guy,
he's not Barjio, he's not del Pierre, he's not even Totty,
but in recent years he's been in Italy's main creative
player and crucial when Italy won Hero twenty twenty one.
So at twenty seven years old, Piney, he's a very
good signing and what a way to become an anfield hero.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
Absolutely right, yep, totally right. I don't know what the
future holds, sorry, the short term future holds for Alex Paulson.
But what I do who knows that? As the players
need to be playing and you can't be third choice goalkeeper.
I know injuries happen, but yeah, you can't just be
sitting on the bench and so I hope that they
find a way of either. You know, look, I don't

(08:19):
suspect that Alex Paulson is ready to be the number
one goalkeeper had born with yet, but he will one day.
But he needs to play as often as he can
and it's probably going to be somewhere else at the
moment on loan, you know, not back at Auckland FC.
I wouldn't have.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
Mentioned no, no a. There was one other thing. I
don't know. If we've got time, we've got time pining. Yeah,
well we'll go on to qualification yep for the Comwealth Games.
I'm a bit concerned about the athletics qualification standards for
Glasgow next year. And look they are really tough, but
don't worry. How big stars will be fine, Hamosh Cure,
Tom Walsh made wish you know, they'll be sweet. Zoey

(08:54):
Hoggs should be okay, but the qualifying standard for her
is eleven seconds, which he's gone under a couple of times.
But I mean this is the men's qualifying for one
hundred meters as ten flats and squares.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Ten flags for the hurds, japers.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
For one hundred, the A qualifying and even the BE
qualifying as ten point hine five. So Tiane Wilkson, who's
been his run ten point ten? I mean he's not
going to make the Conwealth Games under these standards, so
it is tough.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
It is tough. Yeah, yeah, been a move, James. I
want to talk. We should talk about that another day
because I have run out of time. Always great to
tell thanks indeed, Jas McCarty big part of our Sundays.
