Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Edb Angus is emailed. You might remember Angus has but
a friend of the show. He's he sort of phones
in from far flung places. A piney says, no, you're
not talking. He f one today. I'm just in the
Singapore Airlines Business Class lounge, sipping a beer, listening to
your show. We're heading to the Italian Formula one Grand Prix.
Great stuff, fingers, It's got a place we normally find you.
(00:32):
James mccony in the Singapore Airlines Business Class lounge.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Is it in Monza? I mean that's awesome. Yeah, so good,
so good.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Hey, let's talk some rugby Championship All Blacks Argentina. Historic
day for the Pumas. You've got to be happy for them,
don't you.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Yeah, I'm I'm a big Pumas fan actually, and in
fact my favorite player, Thomas Albert Alborno's got injured off
really early in the game, clearly broke his hand, playing
with tears in his eyes by the looks of things,
and they still won. So I actually think the way
that they played, though, was exceptional and wasn't a good
(01:13):
seeing a team from set face play run a strike
move with about three or five crazy wild passes wide
ones as well, you know, massive like I was, I
was just going, this is actually what I want to
see it instead of even though they can keep it
tight Argentina, they flung it around and I loved it.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
I did. Two. Should we be worried about the All
Blacks with South Africa in coming in a fortnight Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Yeah, always. I think the South Africans have shown that
they can grind us down in a game, but I
think the All Blacks at full strength will be pretty formidable.
I just think that for this particular test, there were
a few hospital passes, and one was the selections. I
thought Simon Parker, you know, having to start at number
(02:02):
eight in his very first test when he's played mainly
number six but most of the year, and also hasn't
really played that much rugby recently, I thought that's a
really big ask for him. And also to see Josh Lord,
who I mean, I'm a Chiefs fan. I have hardly
seen Josh Lord play for the past three years. I
think he's played three games in twenty twenty three, three
(02:25):
games last year. I mean, sorry, six games in twenty
twenty three, six games last year and this year I'd
say be around about the same, if not less. And
in one of those games he started and went off
after ten minutes. So it's not exactly a really good
runway to play test rugby. When you see someone like
Sam Darry out there playing NPC, I mean I just
(02:46):
thought maybe that could they could look at something like that.
The selections, I'll.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Tell you the guy they need back is cam Roy
Goad They honestly, I just don't know. I think having
him back gives you a massive boost. I don't know
what the latest does. Jason Holland didn't know when we
spoke to him a couple of hours ago. I just
hope came Roy gotas foot for those games.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Well. Also, the other thing is number seven, okay, so
if he started the last two tests at number seven,
I thought we were talking about him last week. I
thought he did really well. Okay, if you wanted to
rest him and give other people a chance in their jersey,
you've obviously got a Hall of Famer in Ardie Savia there.
But what is Peter Larky doing if he's been selected?
I know Luke Jacobson is recovering from an injury, because
(03:31):
remember when they picked the squad, they had a few
guys who were who were that were covering for injuries.
But then like I played in almost an entire Test
against France last year in Paris and was exceptional. So
you know, there are guys who have got the track
record at test rugby who I think it's worth exploring
and going for big, tall timber. When you looked at
(03:52):
the way Chocobards played his timing at second five, I
mean he plays for Toulouse in France, he plays elite
rugby most of the time, and he was exceptional today.
And just noticing that we only had one loose forward
who you could say is a bit of a flyer
and that's already doing that kind of role on his own.
Just to me that the flow on effect was Argentina
(04:14):
has got uninterrupted ball. Where were our spoilers well, sitting
in blazers in the stand.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, honestly I said before and it's not new, but
a big part of coaching is selection. So that twenty
three for South Africa at Eden Park is going to
be so fascinating to see what they do, what tweets
they make who they can bring back. It's yeah, it's
a very interesting proposition. Hey, Warriors, I was just.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Going to say one one last thing. Scott Barrett is
clearly fighting to get back in to form, and I
think we rely on him a little bit too much
to start and play and he can't be He's it's
impossible to give him time because Patrick Truple or two's injured.
But Scott Barrett at his best as absolute world class,
and he did some amazing things today. But you can
tell he's still fighting to get back into form and
(05:03):
he shouldn't have to do that in pivotal test matches,
if you know what I mean. But that's just you know,
it's like we have to even though he's still struggling
for that fitness and form.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Well, we're out of time now, aren't we. We're out
of time. There's no more games. Yeah, you know, so
he kind of.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Yeah, you don't.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Yeah, exactly right, Hey, worry is one last night, So
the Gold Coast Titans are no longer a bogey team
for us.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
I know, how good was that? But also, I mean
the story of the day, and I think your callers
have identified it really well. Was rugged to a vis
as seck so two hundred and forty five running meters
eighty six post contact meters. I mean, it's just exceptional
stuff from Roger. But I did running to him earlier
on in the year when he was in at Sky
(05:47):
and I asked him about where he wanted to play
and where he was happy to play, and he told
me that he said to where He'd just give me
a position and tell me that's where I'm going to play,
and I'll be happy and I will try and nail
that role. That's all he wanted. He wasn't buying into
any of that fullback chat at all. He just said,
tell me where you want to you want me to play,
And when he found out it was the wing, he said, sweet,
(06:10):
happy with that. And of course you hear him when
he was interviewed last night talking about the pride of
that left Edge with Chanelle Harris de Vitas and you
know Leker and others. You know just what they've done
all year. He loves being out there. And you look
at the stats he and Charles Nickel clocks that are
really sharing the fallback twoties. When you look at the
(06:31):
way they build the sets themselves, and Charms wasn't too
bad as well, with nearly two hundred meters last night
and seventy post contact meters. So those two guys in
our backfield are one reason why the Warriors and Warriors
fans can have some hope moving into the postseason.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
I love that about Roger tui Vasishik. I love that
that even at his you know, at his stage of
his career, he's done everything. Magnificent player, just a generational
rugby league player, just says okay, will you tell me
where you want me to play and I'll perfect that role.
That's magnificent. What an attitude, man.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Yeah, it's just a it's incredible see and also, I
mean if you've seen him on League Lounge on Sky
he comes on with Sean Johnson speaking of such things.
Sean absolutely natural as a TV quite sickening for someone
like myself. But Roger is an incredible guest, really insightful,
loves to just give a little bit of information, educating
(07:25):
everybody along the way. And he's very fun as well,
lots of fun.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Love it. Hey, have you plotted the parade route for
the for the ran Furly Shield.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Well, I'm hoping it does come around my place at
Tiata Tu in west Auckland, but I haven't. I'm not
sure will. I'll be running my own operation out here.
I'll put some others on Poney and he'll be quite
confronting for some of the neighbors. But that shield victory.
The only thing wrong with the white cuto shorts. Did
(07:56):
you see those shorts?
Speaker 2 (07:57):
What would they look like?
Speaker 1 (07:58):
They've been?
Speaker 2 (07:58):
They were dirty? What was going on with those?
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Yeah? The dirty shorts now need to be put in
the Hamilton Museum along with lemasopol one that's kicking tea
because it failed him and it was lucky to get
that that penalty away, the ball slipping off the tee
and the countdown progressing like a NASA countdowns, like get
that kick away. But yeah, the shorts were terrible. I
(08:21):
think it was because of the clash of uniforms. They
were allowed to wear the tricolors of red, yellow and
black as long as they had different shorts, and they
chose dare I say, a sort of a brownie gray.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
It was terrible, terrible color for shorts, absolutely terrible. Good
on you, mate, Yeah, it was like one of those
movies when you when the guy's diffusing a bomb as
the as the you know, the counter counts down to zero.
He just got the kick away Lema and won the
shield for White Cutter. Well, it's great chatting James, and
enjoy the rest of your Sunday mate. We'll do it
again next week.
