Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talk zed B.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Let's get you to Argentina up and get a reaction
out of the All Blacks camp. All Blacks assistant coach
Jason Holland is with us now. Jason, thanks for your time.
What is front of mind as you reflect on the
performance tonight?

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Look, there's lots of things from of mine obviously, just
ultimately really disappointed and in performance. You know, Argentinians played
some good footy, but you know where we're seeing him
is a lot of areas tonight and it cost.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Us which areas in particular?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Oh look mate, there was you know a lot of
areas where we didn't perform we wanted to obviously, you know,
the Argentinians kicked really well and one the year most times,
which is which is a massive part of the game
these days. And as we've seen from all the rugby
like today with the Sun African Ausi game and our game,

(01:04):
if you can't win the year, then then you loser
possision and you put yourself under pressure. That's a big point,
you know, even like a lot of our attack and
our strike was you know, some of our line out
and stuff was was off for our execution, which meant
we couldn't build pressure. And Nick Berry has always been
a referee who who you know, gives advantage for the

(01:25):
people the team with ball in hand, and because of
those two reasons, we didn't have it and cost us.

Speaker 4 (01:31):
So you know, there's still three key areas.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
And then yeah, not much to not much that we
were overly happy with.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
How big a work on is being better in the
aerial battle, Jase, and how do you do that?

Speaker 4 (01:46):
Yeah, look, it's we've been working pretty hard in the year.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Just it's it's really important to get up and win
the collision in the year these days with no as
the rules have changed and you can't give any protection
to the catcher. It's the contests, so you've got to
be strong in the air. You've got to get higher
and be stronger than the opposition. And the Argentinian wingers
were outstanding tonight and and won.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
All those contests.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
So Matte, it's a it's a must go forward that
we must be stronger in the air.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
We must win win the possession from from those kicks.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Have the back three that that started today. Rico Yuwanni
Severiese will Jordan Have they got that in their locker?
Are they able to make improvements there?

Speaker 4 (02:26):
Yeah, I think I think definitely they all are.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Like I think you'll find a lot of the time
these days in the game, it's it's not necessarily a
wingers at times either that are under those high balls
with tens and fifteens in the backfield.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
So it's probably more than more than the back three.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
It's it's specifically tens and fifteen's a lot of the
time when the Argentinians. Argentinians were kicking to us tonight.
So everybody here that they have and we have to.
You have to if you want to be in the backfield,
then we have to be able to win those collisions
as as simple as that.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
How concerning is it that you have been handed five
yellow cards and two games?

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Yeah, hugely, Like it's a it is how discipline needs
to be better when we're under pressure, and you know
a lot of the other things I've talked around Leeds
to that, as I said tonight, Nick Barry's rewards, the
team with the ball and because of all those other
things that we've just talked around around our inaccuracies, it
means we spend a lot of time with doubt it

(03:21):
and that's what happens.

Speaker 4 (03:23):
In the game these days. So it has to you're
not going to win.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
We're not going to win two games against good opposition
with two yellow cards and as you say, five over
over the season.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Is there a general understanding of the deliberate knock on
rule among the players? Do they know what they can
and can't do? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (03:41):
They do.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
They do in uh, you know, instinctive stuff they need to do.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
We need to be better at it.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
We need to make sure that you know, guys get
if they do it in training, they get seen off
the field with a little for yellow card for us
at the moment. So you know, that's been happening for
a few weeks. So got to be better there too.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Pinty and an attack Jason, what what what's your assessment
of the way you're playing with ball in hand from
from nine out at the moment?

Speaker 4 (04:08):
Ah?

Speaker 3 (04:09):
Yeah, Look, the there's a lot of execution stuff tonight
where you know, we wanted to spread the Argentinians and
play with a bit of wits somewhere. Execution around our
line out, delivery and around our skill sets didn't let
us do that, and so it became a battle. We
didn't get to play the style of footage that we
wanted to. So, yep, we've got to now some skill

(04:30):
sets to be able to allow us to use the
whole field, and that's it's got to be a massive
part of how we go forward.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Does it feel disjointed to you? I mean you're the
attack coach. Does it feel disjointed?

Speaker 3 (04:41):
It look disjointed tonight, Piney, I'll tell you that we
feel like we know how we want to play, and
we trained pretty well this week and got some real flow.
It felt like we had some real flow and how
we're going to play and how we're going to play
with some wits to open up the middle of the field.
But yep, I definitely looked disjointed tonight around our skill sets.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
You've shared the last four test with Argenta, the two
wins a piece over the last couple of years. What
makes the modern day Pumas such a challenging opponent.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Yeah, I think it's everybody's talked around. You give them
a sniff around a lot of the things we've talked
around in the last ten minutes, around giving them the ball,
getting them excited, around opportunities around, you know, contests in
the year and those sorts of things, and they're hard
thing to stop. And with the passion of the of
the Argentinians, they're you know, you've got to you gotta

(05:32):
be accurate and sort of stomp them out. And that's
what we didn't do tonight.

Speaker 4 (05:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Yeah, you just got to make sure you don't give them,
give them anything to give them more energy than they
already have, and be accurate.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
As Cortez rol. Okay, have you got any update for
us there?

Speaker 4 (05:50):
I'm not sure yet.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
Not sure he caught the pretty he caught the pretty
good being so I haven't seen yet. Now I haven't
got anything on any injury reports yet.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
And you don't know about about cam roy guard yet.
You'll find it when you get home whether he might
be in the mix for South Africa. A.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
Yeah, we'll find out when we get home. There'll be
no doubt they'll be.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
We'll get medical from this game tomorrow morning and before
we get on the plane and get updated early next
week around some of the boys.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
At home, all right, and the week ahead as you
get home, and then do you do you disperse? Do
you disperse for it? Come back together for South Africa
or do you stay together?

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Now we I think we get home at one o'clock
in the morning Tuesday morning, I think, and we're back
in on Saturday. So home for home for three days
pretty much for Tuesday Wedness or four days Tuesday or Friday,
and back in for the weekend.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
And it's probably this one comes to surprise to you.
There's you know, there a few people you know talking
about this performance back here. You know, what should we
be worried?

Speaker 4 (06:52):
Jase?

Speaker 2 (06:52):
What you know, what's the what's the you know, the
strategy for turning things around here.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
Look, we'll obviously we'll messively unpack that pack that performance.
You know, the cruxes we want to play a we
want to play a style of that where we can
we can play use the ball and we can spread
teams and.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
Go through them. And at the moment, you know, we've
got to look hard.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
At how we what our what our skill sets are,
and how we're delivering that to make sure that we
play the way we.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
Are And.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
Yeah, well we'll obviously be working really really hard on
the way this week to make sure that we can
play the way way we want to play when we
play against South Africa.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
So you're tied to that strategy. You you're all in
on that strategy.

Speaker 4 (07:34):
On what strategy is that?

Speaker 2 (07:36):
The one that you just talked about about spreading it wide,
wanting to play an expansive game, that sort of thing.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
Yes, yes, well we want to play. We want to
have a good balance in our game. You know, we
need to be able to we're anybody to use the
whip and obviously everybody knows if you use the whips,
that opens up the field a little bit through the middle.
So at the moment we're not getting we're not getting
the wips in our game.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
And yeah, we need to be able to do that.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
I appreciate your time. Jace, Safe travels back. We'll see
you back here, thanks mate. Assistant coach of the All
Blacks or one off joining us out of Buenos Aires
not long after the full time whistled.
