They've been edged 38-36 by Otago in their NPC contest in Christchurch - their maiden NPC loss of the season.

The red-and-blacks led 36-21 in the 53rd minute, before the visitors scored three tries to snatch the Log O' Wood.

Are in christ Church yesterday, up against a team that
was seven from seven and ahead by fifteen points worth
twenty five minutes to go. The Log award has now
changed hands four times this season, the first time that
has happened since nineteen fifty. Otago head coach is Mark Brown.

(02:22):
How was your night, mate?

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, it was a good night, Thanks Finny. We stay
at the ground for quite a while and then yeah
went back to the hotel starting together. Just yeah, stay
at the moment.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Really, I bet, I bet who looked after the shield
last night? Who was put in charge of it on
overnight duty?

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Yeah, massive responsibility, So we gave it to We got
it to Charles Elton, who it's one of our sort
of more experienced members of the team. But he's not
actually in that contract with squad. He's in his injured cover.
So very responsible man to have that have those duties.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Excellent stuff. Has anyone in your team ever won it
was anyone in the team when you last had it?

Speaker 3 (03:03):
Well, you've got me there. I'm not too sure to
be fair, I know, Joan, I think there's a couple
potentially who who have had a shield rang with the TAGA.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
You, of course were co coach of Canterbury for a
couple of seasons and involved in the team for a
long time. So was this bittersweets or was it extra
special for you?

Speaker 3 (03:22):
I'm reflection it's probably a little bit. It's like sprinkles
on top. I suppose it's when the schedule came out.
It was always a game I was looking forward to.
But the fact that both teams and were going well
and it was sort of one versus two on the
table and then you had to have the shield thrown
then for good measure. It became a become a pretty

(03:43):
exciting fixture. And yeah, it was really just focusing on
on the fixture itself, not not the occasion or what
was going on and behind it. But yeah, I'm reflectioning
it's it is nice to do that, but yeah, I'm
really grateful and for my time at Kenerbury. So it's
not there's no bitter sweetness here, it's just it's always
nice to get one get one up on somewhe where

(04:06):
you previously.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Absolutely so, did you just try to keep your week
normal leading in or did you in some ways embrace
the fact that this was a special occasion.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Good question. We didn't hide from the fact that the
shield was up for Grares, so we spoke about it
earlier in the week, but then just tried to keep
things normal, just said a normal week and treated it. Yeah,
like we had to be really well prepared because Kenery
were going really good. They're a good side, so we
just said to look after ourselves and that was the focus.

(04:39):
Once we had reduced the shield, you.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Were thirty six twenty one down with twenty five minutes
to go. What sort of messages were you sending down
at that point?

Speaker 3 (04:50):
It was a case of just really sticking to what
we were doing. Through glimpses throughout that game. We were
periods of play that you know, when we held the
ball and sort of played the way we want to,
we were creating opportunities and sometimes we them sometimes we
just fretted them away. So it was more we knew,
we knew if we just got into our work that

(05:13):
the opportunities would be there. And I think the message
at halftime was just to try and win the collisions.
Think Canterbury were very good naturally staff physically, we didn't
make a lot of headway and then when they were
carrying we sort of gave them the game line. So
it was just a message at half time to go
out and win collisions, which the boys did really well.
And yeah, it was then it was just sticking to

(05:33):
what we're how we plan to play, Cannibrillyan, trusting that
and then when the opportunities come up, just for the
boys just to have a swing.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
You mean, look as Casey goes all right, doesn't.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
He he's not bad? Yeah, yeah, he's yeah, some talent
he's he was club player of the year down here
and played a couple of games last year for Tom
Donley and he was exceptional in the club season. And yeah,
it was pretty evident pretty early that he was able

(06:04):
to transfer what he was doing at Club Rag to
this level and he's just keeps gone to new heights,
doesn't he?

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, secrets out, doesn't it. I mean, I don't know
how old would he be. He is he just a
kid or was he a bit older?

Speaker 4 (06:15):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (06:16):
You know? Any young? Oh wow?

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Okay, okay, so so yeah, so the next level, I mean,
without wanting to pump a young guys ties up too much,
to the next level is something you could see him
aspiring to.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Oh absolutely, yeah, he's he's like he's a true athlete.
He's very skillful, but he's very explosive and that they
will take you a long way.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
So now you need to keep it. This year is
shown have difficult That is North Harbor on Saturday afternoon.
Do you foresee any problems refocusing your boys, because if
you wouldn't that you keep it for the summer.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Right, that's right? Yeah? Yeah, ordinarily you know it's coming
off games like that, it might be it might be
a challenge, and these games sort of take a little
bit out of you, not only physically but mentally. But
we're just going to have to the front up because
no disrespect to the shield, but we've got Liam Coltman's
one it's game this week, so yeah, there'll be no

(07:10):
excuses not to not to honor him with the performance and.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Just to finish how worthy emotions in the coaching box
after the final whistle. On our radio commentary, our boys
said that they could hear the windows being bashed behind them.
Was a bit of excitement, no.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
Doubt, otherwise denying it was. There's a range of personalities
up there and the responses once that ball got kicked
out reflect the salities in the box.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Great to chat to you, Mark, Congratulations made I think yeah,
like for the neutral I mean terrific game of rugby
and and love seeing the love seeing the shield change hands.
All the best of the week ahead, mate, and for
for Liam Cokpman's hundredth and holding onto the shield. I
appreciate the chat.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
Thanks very much. Fine, appreciate it no good only.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
Mate, Thank you Mark. Mark Brown there, head coach of
Otago shield Holders. They put it on the line against
North Harbor this coming Saturday, so next weekend one o'clock.
If they win that they hold it for the summer.
If they were to give it up to No Harbor,
North Harbor would have one further challenge to negotiate against
Southland the following Friday, so it's quite possible, and who

(08:14):
would bet against it Given the year we've had that
it might change hands a couple more times o Targo
though if they beat North Harbor next Saturday, we'll hold
it across the summer months.
