Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks B.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
The Black Ferns will open their w x V one
program tomorrow. They take on Ireland three o'clock tomorrow afternoon
New Zealand time in Vancouver. It'll be their first match
since they're clash with England at Twickenham earlier in the month.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
It's going to be to go long back talk is
in the ransom the change says.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
For England to stop this in fac says, well, be does.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
For Black Ferns.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Funny that way a little more in the second half,
free the place and choices, but it's the English Red
Roses did it. John the job again. Black Ferns assistant
coach Mike Delaney is with us out of Vancouver. Mike,
thanks for your time. Let's look back to that game
a couple of weeks ago. What were your main takeaways
from that defeat to England at Twickenham.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Yeah, you know, if we've credit a lot of opportunities
and then put ourselves in a really good position to
put points on earlier, but you know it didn't come
out of points and then just some little areas, you know,
just not executing let us down at it, so we've
had to focus on making sure we tided those areas up.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
What is that What does that focus on taking opportunities
better look like? Is it just being a bit more clinical?
What sort of things you are you trying to impart
to the team?
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Yeah, probably being a bit more clinical. You know, we
had a few line breaks that we didn't capitalize on,
and you know, coming all away in that twenty two, Yeah,
really important that we actually come with points in that
part of the field and just be more clinical in
those areas. And yeah, just a bit of our skill
sets clean us down. And but you know, we know
that was that the ability to bake them when they
(01:47):
need to such a matter provement together.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
I guess you don't want to look too far ahead.
You do have them again though in a week or so.
Have you managed to put them off to one side
and focus fully on the challenge that Ireland will present
to you?
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Yeah, and soon we even you know, we haven't really
spoken about anything further than Ilan and you know they've
done extremely well to you know, shift up the have
the rankings here and then joining us in the WXV stuff,
and you know they're a great win against Australia and
you know, from what we've seen that's going to be
you know, a great challenge for us to get out
(02:22):
there and put a performance and that we're proud of.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
You've only ever played them twice before, the Black Ferns,
I mean, and last time was twenty sixteen, which is
long ago enough to really be a little bit irrelevant.
Have you managed to glean a little bit of information
about them?
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah, we did a you know obviously, you know they've
really grinned their game with effect that the Six Nations
competition really sets them up in the Northern hemisphere and
it's you know, it's good for us to come across
those kind of teams a different style and you know
they'll be but unpredictable for us, you know, not not
seeing too much of them. But yeah, we just need
(02:58):
to worry about us and then the simple things really well, a.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Raft of changes to the Black Ferns in the starting
side end on the bench from the side that played England.
Can you can you talk us through some of the
rationale for the changes you've made.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Yeah, So, you know, these tournaments is really important that
we get to see how some of our ladies adapt
in the on the on the you know, the little stage,
I guess. So it's important that we get them out there,
and yeah, we try to keep some continuity obviously it's
really important for us. But at the same time we
need to you know, rotate a few positions and make
(03:36):
sure that we're you know, building at depths that we're
looking for moving through.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
The World Cup roal Hey DeMont has moved back into
the teen jersey. She started at second five of course
against England. What's the thinking. Do you feel like that's
her best position?
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Oh, you know, you know, she's very talented and very
able at both Oh, we just can to her get
back in there and run the team around. You know,
I think Hannah King's been awesome for us as such
a young game test player for us, and she'll grow
and grow. So, you know, we've been really head with here.
But it thing it's a good chance for the proceeded
(04:14):
to come into the side and also see who shifting
a ten.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Do you feel like you're building good depth on the
black Ferns.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Yeah, it's you know, there's some pretty robust discussions around selection,
and you know that's a good thing for us to
have those sort of tough conversations amongst us trying to
you know, youven's bring their hand up and it's probably
something we haven't had for a while. So it's it's
been great for the group and pretty pressure on each other,
and there's you know, there's no given for positions and
(04:44):
everyone's waking really hard to put their hand up to
make a to give themselves a position in the team.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
And as mentioned, there's a World Cup a year or
so away. How much of what you're doing at the moment,
Mike is with a bit of an eye on the
World Cap in twelve months time.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Yeah, for sure. You know it's you know, it's still
in you know, we're just getting into that prefer era
of professionals and looks like and you know, we just
need our ladies training as often as possible. There's as
many games as possible to just expose them to more
and more rugby. So it's a challenge for us. But yeah,
(05:21):
totally just around you know, what does professions will look like,
and it's it's really concentrate on, you know, using the
time wisely up until that tournament with Opicky and with
our training camps and with just that shift and environment
for our ladies.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
What's Vancouver like.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
It's not a bad place actually, you know it's the
suns out today, so couldn't complain, you know, I think, yeah,
we're not a few bike tours the other day and
get around the place. But yeah, that's a that's a
very nice sitting next to the mix to be openly
good stuff.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Well, all the Beast against Ireland first up, Mike, and
then on towards the other two matches in w X
you one appreciate you taking the top for a chat
this afternoon.
