Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from Newstalks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
EDB Chiefs have opened a four point gap at the
top of the Super Rugby table after a stunning thirty
five nineteen went over the Crusaders in christ Church last night.
They were down nineteen to three but then scored thirty
two unanswered points to put themselves in the driver's seat
for the home advantage during the playoffs. Chiefs and All
Blacksmidfield of Quintit pies with us on Weekend Sport. Thanks
for your time, Quinn. You're pretty happy Chiefs Camp as
(00:33):
you flew home this morning. What stands out most about
the performance last night for you?
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Yeah, thanks for having me on. You're pretty happy Camp
getting on the flight this morning. And I guess in
that second half we won some big moments compared to
the first half where they controlled a lot of the game,
a lot of territory and a lot of positions, so
it was good to flip their second half on its
head and come away with a good victory.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
What sort of conversations were you're having at nineteen three down.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
You, I guess we just needed to break them down
a bit. We weren't for finding too much go forward
on the edges. So they're a team that faw the
field pretty well and can defend for long sets. So
we decided to have a crack to go through them,
and I guess we got some good power to that
and we were pretty stoked to get there. Try just
(01:22):
before halftime and you know, put a bit of window
our sALS going into half time.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Yeah, yeah, I was going to ask you about that.
Pretty important to close it up to nineteen ten. What
was Sewan Stevenson doing though? I thought he was going
to go himself.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Yeah, the old leagues a Suter couldn't get They're goldn't
get past no hope them, so I was I was
surprised as well. I thought he was going to slide
on in and get the guns out, but luckily got
the ball away and the money dotted over, So yeah,
that was quite lucky.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Now, what about Leroy Carter's try? What was your view
of that?
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Yeah, that was a massive moment for the game. I
guess I was caught up on the far side of
the field, so I was sort of whipping him home
from seventy meters away and didn't sort of move. I knew.
I knew he had it once he got into space,
and we'll give him stick this morning, actually because he
nearly got run down by Fletcher Neill, which would have
been embarrassing for a Speeds to like himself. But yeah,
(02:17):
it was a massive moment for us, and I guess yeah,
it hurt them a lot.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Once you went ahead. What was that twenty two to nineteen?
Once Damien had converted that try? I mean, you're in
christ you're right against the Crusaders. But when you wore ahead,
did you feel in control of the game?
Speaker 3 (02:35):
You know? I felt like that second half we played
how we wanted to and we did feel in control.
But we know from history we haven't won too many
games down there and not and other teams haven't either.
So being up three points you can't take your foot
off the throats, and we knew we needed a lot
more points to secure the win, and they threw everything
(02:56):
at us and defended their hearts out. So pretty proud
of that effort.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
How good having Wallace a t t back off the
bench last couple of games, his first start last night,
I got a try. How good having back for the
for the push to watch the finals?
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Yeah, it's been massive. He can play footy, that kid.
He just brings the extra punch to that forward pack
that we need. And it's a great battle in our
loose four trios with Penny and Simon playing well uh
Luke our skipper, So it's a battle to start. But
again I guess Any and those guys that come off
(03:29):
the bench also bring the extra punch that we also need.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
How much did last weekend against the Hurricane sting?
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Mhm? Yeah, we we had a pretty tough review and
we sat in the change rooms after the Hurricanes game
and listen to them, listen to them sing their song
next Door, which Don turned our speaker off, and we
all sat there and listened to it and it sort
of filled us. And we had a tough review on
Monday and two tough trainings on Tuesday Thursday, which I
(03:58):
guess prepared us well for this weekend. And yeah, it's
definitely showed out there.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Yeah, well you got the chance to sing last night.
You've got to buy now before the final push. How
do you spend the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Yeah, it's been it's been a big six week block
for us since our last by So it's about refreshing
for us. A lot of our guys I've played big
minutes and the week will look like look different for everyone,
but it it'll contain a little bit of training, but
just mainly mentally refreshing and getting our bodies right for
(04:30):
the last two games and then our finals push.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Here, you've beaten the Crusaders in christ Church. I think
most people would say the Chiefs are now super Rugby favorites.
Is that a tag that's okay with you? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (04:42):
I guess there's a lot of water to go on
the bridge until we get to the finals, but yeah,
it's it's a game we definitely targeted and we knew
if we could do a job down in christ it
should put us in good stead for the finals run.
So we know how important it is to have home
field advantage in the finals and we don't have it yet.
But yeah, it's a massive goal for us to get
(05:04):
there those games.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
If from justadium, ye, are you in a long way
to achieving that. Last night, I congrats on the one, Quinn,
thanks for the chat this afternoon. Enjoyed bye week and
all the best for the finals.
