Said b.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Wellington Saints back home and tod Open Arena and potty,
do I have a venue for today's home game against
the Otago Nuggets. Now, we're going to draw our winners
for the four tickets very shortly. But let's heat into
the Saints camp now and chat to head coach Aaron Young,
who's with us? Aaron, appreciate your time, mate. Tell us
about the weekend. Last weekend a lost to the Fire
(00:35):
up North, but then a good one over the tour
Tata at Auckland. You're happy with overall how things are
tracking with you being second place on the ladder.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Yeah. I think one thing I've been you know, pleased
with our group with is just our response after probably
disappointing losses. You know, we we we really lock into
the second game or you know that bounce back round
and to a Tita game was a great example of that.
So we obviously want to be more consistent and we
(01:04):
respect every team and every opponent. But I think what
I'm what I'm finding with Wellington, which I knew before,
is you know, we really get the best version of
every team, which which is exciting. It's what we want
and it's just about us playing to a standard that
can be more consistent. So, you know, Tom, you know,
today's game is a great example of us. You know,
(01:26):
if we're really consistent what we want to do, we
put ourselves in a great spot to be successful.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
I guess when you look at the couple of the
losses and you are at the top end of the table,
so you know things are tracking well. But a couple
of the defeats like the one against the fi where
and maybe that one earlier against that understrength Hawk's Bay
games that a lot of people probably expected the Saints
to win. Now, have you sort of looked back on
those one any similarities or reasons as to why some
games you might come in as favorites might not have
(01:50):
gone as well as planned.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yeah, there's definitely similarities, you know. I think we talked
about just our awareness of the game. Sometimes we get
in a bit of a rut and it takes us
way too long to get out of it. And in
those two games specifically, you know, there's instead of being
you know, two three possession stretch, it was you know,
half a quarter or a seven to eight minute stretch
(02:16):
where we're just out of funk, out of out of rhythm.
So that's I think for us, our biggest growth and
where we need to improve the most as a group
is you know, just ironing out some of those patches
and the making. You're always going to have moments and mistakes,
but if we can limit those too, you know, possession
or two max, you know, we're just going to be
that much consistent because we have shown moments. You know,
(02:40):
my mind goes to the you know, the fourth quarter,
to a part of game where we really but you know,
we really locked it up and got multiple stops and
key moments. The Airs game, you know, I think we
held them the six points or something crazy in that
fourth quarter. So we can have unbelievable stretches, especially defensively,
(03:00):
but it's just those you know, out of the rhythm,
out of character kind of stretches offensively and as a
group that we we've got to avoid.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Sayley, obviously, it's been sad to say that he's had
a few more concussion issues since since he's been back
with the Saints. Aaron, can you just give us an
update on exactly where things are at with him. I
see Melbourne made a bit of a few comments to
Ossie media yesterday just regarding you know that they're monitoring
the situation. So so what where does it sit from
your end at the moment.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
I guess we're at since is we're going to do
it best for him and you know we're not going
to there's no pressure from Aran to to rush him
back for anything. He's he's actually doing a good job
with his recovery. His symptoms are really you know, subsided,
and he's in a good place mentally. He's very positive
around the group. But you know, there's just risk involved.
(03:50):
So we we just have to be diligent with we
put him in and you know, if he was to
return for us, he has to he has to feel confident.
It has to fit, you know, his his choice. It's
got to be his choice and his choice only. So
we're just being patient right now. There's no timeline. He
has to see some neurologists and some different people and
(04:13):
then you know, we'll just take a step by step
from there.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Given I guess as status in the league over there
at the moment, you know, two time Defensive Player of
the Year, big contracts signed again with Melbourne Unite. It
could it could have come down to Melbourne just give
you a call and say, hey, you know, we don't
want you to be using the Saints for the rest
of the season.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
I mean, there's always potential for that. We haven't had
that conversation. I think the biggest thing is I think
they trust our side of things. We've got some good
people on the ground here, medical status, doctors, concussion protocols,
so he's been seen by the right people, so you know,
they have every right to do that. But that conversation
doesn't come up, and ultimately it'll just come down to him.
(04:53):
You know, he's you know, he's a professional, he wants
you know, he's going to do what's best for him
and his family. So you know, like I said, we'll
continue to be patient and you know, take it day
by day, week by week, and then finally, you know,
a decision at some point.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Indeed, well, wishing him and yourselves all the best with that, Aaron,
and hopefully we'll see Shayley back out of the court
for the Saints very soon. Aaron Young, their head coach,
off the Saints four o'clock tip off against Otago at pottydoers.
Ted open Aha Arena this afternoon.
