Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk said.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
B but it is Super Rugby's final round and well
in terms of the meanings of home games, it feels
like the best has been saved till the last. In
terms of this Hurricanes Mowana Pacifica contest to wrap up
the round robin tonight, Ardie Savvy, You're back in Wellington
for the first time as Mowana pacifica skipper former Hurricanes,

(00:32):
his brother Julian Jackson, Garden Baship also among others part
of this Mowanna PACIFICA team who are in the fight
for the playoffs and don't forget Mowana PACIFICA back in
Round four up at their home ground in Auckland, had
a win over the Hurricanes. But Thecanes, though of course
the playoff spot has been completed, but on fourth at
the moment, they do want to solidify that for a

(00:54):
possible extra life come the playoffs which begin next weekend.
Let's set into the Hurricanes camp now and one of
the star performers of the year from a leadership perspective,
from a loose forward perspective, as Duplessy could Hurricanes co
captain who's played the most amount of minutes out of
anyone in the Hurricanes this year, he joins us now

(01:16):
morning to you, dupless I mentioned just then, it feels like,
you know, everything's being secure. There's not as much on
the line for the Hurricanes at this point as there
might have been a few weeks ago, but it feels
like this is still one of the biggest games of
the season.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Is that right, Yeah, it's a pretty good summary of
the situation there, Ada, and I think not sure if
it's a fortunate position to be in, but you know,
there's still plenty to play for, especially for well for
both teams. You know, we want to hold on to
four and Moana definitely want to I want to take
the result into their own hands and and so that
the fire finals. So there's definitely no dead rubber, which

(01:55):
I think, you know, Proctise is going to create a
pretty amazing game for spectators to watch it and enjoy.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Yeah, looking forward to it. And in terms of the
way the year has played out for the Hurricanes, there
have of course been some testing moments games where you've
been fighting to keep the season alive. But I want
to talk about yourself individually duplecy clocking up the minutes
on the field nine hundred and fifty three minutes. Now
that's the most of anyone else in the team. Combined
with your leadership responsibilities this year, how have you found

(02:26):
the massive workloads you've had on your hands.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
I've enjoyed it. I feel like, yeah, the leadership side
of things brings the best out of me. It gives
me a distraction personally for my own game, I have
to you know, part of the job is obviously looking
after the boys around me. And I'm surrounded by amazing
leaders and the other three co captains, so you know,
on any given day one of us might carry a
heavy a load and just playing. Yeah, we've got times

(02:51):
there with a bit touch and go in terms of
our own season, but really proud of our group. You know,
we we knew at the start of the year we
were a lot of injuries, but there were definitely some
things that we could control that we could be better at,
and those are the things that we targeted, and you know,
week by week we hopefully, well we got better at
one or one or two things and just slowly, slowly

(03:14):
is the egging on built a little bit of momentum
and we're boys coming back from injury and some real
experience growing within the group. You can see that, you
can see the you can see it all come through
in the performances that we're showing. We're winning games by
close margins that we potentially would have lost earlier on
in the year. So yeah, leadership was We've got an awesome,

(03:35):
awesome system and an awesome group working within the group,
and then and then playing was just really proud of
the maturity and the growth that we've shown across the season.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
And just back to that minute count, because you're forty
seven minutes away from clocking up a thousand minutes on
field for the Canes this year. So the workload itself,
how much of a toll has it taken on you
this year?

Speaker 3 (03:56):
If any?

Speaker 2 (03:57):
I mean you're always standing out as the one that
fights down to the final seconds. You're getting into as
many collisions as possible. How are you're shaping up at
this point of the season.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
I've enjoyed it. Like you know, you ask any reggae
player what do they want to be doing, and it's
playing rugby obviously. You know, our firsts and trainers are
working closely with the with the head coaches around managing
loads and bringing boys in and out when they see fit,
and yeah, I think just working close to you with them,

(04:30):
nailing off my week, especially my recovery post games, has
helped me to prepare for you know, the following game.
Also this yearning, I would say my whole career, and
I think that it's helped me just be real consistent
in terms of my performance and my preparations o the week.
But yeah, like I love playing Ragby Bros. There's definitely

(04:50):
some days and it's a bit harder to roll out
of bed than others, but the show goes on, and
you know, I'm not the only one that's feeling sore
and tired at all, So keep run on our team
and probably run on the other teams feel in the
same way. So it's just finding ways to get on
with but also nailing the balance between recovery and performance.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
And in terms of the way the season's gone, if
you look at results, it shows that things picked up
with that trip to Australia a month or so ago.
The draw against the Force, the rare win over the
Brumbies in Canberra, is that when it felt like things
were starting to click and come right or with the
hints of that. A little bit earlier on than that,
I think there.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
Were hints we had a massive win against Durer. Even
with our losses and a wind earlier on, we always
felt like we could have been playing better, especially more acurely.
The win against the Highlanders was maybe the process. We
we went earlier on in the season to a game
that we were proud of and that was before the buy,

(05:51):
So before we went to Australia, we really targeted to
those two games and realistically that was our season. If
we didn't get a job done over there against the
Force and the the Brumbies, we yeah, we would have
been in a pretty deep hole and it would have
been pretty hard for ourselves. I guess I was out
of that one. So yeah, getting the job done over
there was a massive boost for our confidence and I

(06:12):
guess a nod sort of work that our coaches and
we have been doing throughout the week to say that, yeah,
we're actually on the right track. If we can be
more accurate within the game, what we're doing is actually
paying loss and you know, I think that really just
they just got the ball rolling for us, and obviously
since then, we've yeah, we've some pretty quality performances back
home in New Zealand in Australia.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah, all right, let's go to tonight's game, because what's
an occasion it bodes to be. It's certainly not probably
the most challenging game of rugby will we're playing at
home this year, but in terms of what it will
mean to both sides a lot. The Hurricanes legends Ardie
Savia coming back to Wellington in a different jersey and
their club my winer specificare having so much to fight

(06:56):
for tonight as well. What kind of dynamic does that
bring to the contest this evening?

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Yeah, I mean it's massive and like difficulties, I can't
ask for much more. You've got arguably one of Wellington's
greatest efforts coming to play here but for another team.
So yeah, it's it's definitely something that we've acknowledged and
it's hard not to. You can't open up your phone
or any newspaper without seeing Wana and Ardi at the
front of it at the moment, and rightly so. They're

(07:22):
creating a lot of noise around around rugby and the organization,
which is awesome for our game. But yeah, lot there
are people that leave our team for whatever reason and
join other teams to come back and play all the time.
You know, Jeffrey too among Allen played over ore games
for us, and we played them last week with the Reds,
so it's not uncommon for us to playboys who have

(07:43):
been here and had big parts to play in the club.
But yeah, we want to provide a unique challenge. I
guess they're a massive, massive confidence the moments some team,
and they're obviously spearheaded by Asavre, who's a good friend
of a lot of ours but also one of the
best players in the women at the moment. So yeah,
we're quite aware of the challenge that's in front of us,

(08:05):
and obviously they posed us up at the start of
the year, so yeah, there's no hiding from the fact
that we've got to boot the game on our hands
to when we play the Boys, and we're looking forward
to it.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
And that fourth spot up for grabs and yours to
kind of own if you win tonight, So crunch time
for you guys as well, not just tonight but also
heading into the playoffs from next week. How does the
intensity ramp up at trainings and the internal competitions for
spots within the team.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Yeah, look, intensity rises naturally, so there's no there's no
need for us to create a sense of edge throughout
the week because the reality of the situation is pretty
obvious to us all and we feel it. We wake
up and we feel there's a I don't know really
how to explain it, though, there's a there's a feeling
in the air. So it's just naturally gonna the intensity

(08:53):
is naturally gonna gonna build. And we just we just
finished an awesome training where we were really challenged by
the group that was trying to I guess replicate the
way Mona plays, which is, yeah, it's what we want.
We don't want to is off as we go deeper
to the season. But also seeing as it's so parent,
we know, I guess what works for us, what we
need out of the week, the right areas to fraude

(09:16):
and push to get the best performance out of the
group that's playing. So yeah, as much as we want
to challenge each other, there's also a line around making
sure that we still get through what we need to
get through and we land in the right spots.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
And before you go dopes, I know it's been talked
about a lot, so I'm not going to dwell on
it heaps this morning. But obviously there has been a
lot of talk around yourself and the Black Jersey this year.
I do just want to ask any human with all
that noise around, I'm sure we'd struggle to shut it
all out. So how are you managing to stay completely
focused on the rest of the Hurricanes campaign? Or have

(09:48):
you just been acknowledging you know, your genuine prospects for
the All Blacks this year.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
No, this is my ninth year playing Super Rugby, and
do you learn pretty quickly to buy idea that you
learn quickly? Wise that will get to you. But no,
it's just a matter of just going week by week,
day by day and being able to shut it out because, yeah,
although you know a lot of the messaging is positive
and nice to hear, at the end of the day,

(10:13):
the All Blacks is not picked by the media and
the All Blex is not picked by the fans in
the community or my family members you know who message
me and Talvey, I've had a great game, so all
I can do is just focus on focus on myself,
focus on my game and look for feedback from the
people that really do matter, and that's my teammates and
my coaches and the All Blacks delectors. So yeah, it's

(10:35):
definitely something that me and my family are aware of,
but it's definitely not something that we're you know, we're
resting our laurels on or letting boost us up in
anyway because the real of the years, it's all just noise.
So trying to shut it out is the best thing
that I can do at the moment.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
And barring some very strange results, it is one last
time at home for the Hurricanes this season. You've had
some strong wins at sky Stadium this year. You know
you'll be having to travel for the playoffs next week.
So what does it mean getting one last crack in
front of home fans and a very special contests.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
Yeah, it's in messive like we're just absolutely adore, I
guess running out at sky Stadium in front of our
family and friends and feel like we've been building really nicely.
As I said, gone on with the community. That turns
up obviously some pretty cool while stones to celebrate with
TJ Clark making his debut, you know, an awesome young
local lead coming out of Silver streamer for Tony and

(11:28):
Wellington Lions. And then at the other at the other
end of the spectrum we've got Tyre Lomax claim there
is one hundred super games. So yeah, there's plenty for
us to celebrate and plenty for us to look forward
to outside of the immediate focus, which is winning and
solidifying that full spot going into the finals. But yeah,
I know all of us are extremely excited, and yeah
we'll be looking to I guess get the job done

(11:49):
seeing as it's it's most probably our last home game
for the year, so yeah, looking forward to playing and
looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Yeah, it's be a great occasion. Dup plus, thanks so
much for your time, mate, Always appreciate your comments here
on News Talks here. Big go well tonight and all
the best for those playoffs over the coming weeks as well.

Speaker 1 (12:04):

Speaker 3 (12:05):
