Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talks EDB, News talksb's Friday sport kickoff with
Juglus Little India, serving New Zealanders for over thirty years.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Well, it's that time of the week again where we
talk sport.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Adam Cooper, the host of All Sports Breakfast from seven
to nine, joins us. Unfortunately, unfortunately our left hand, our
spin bowler, our opening batsman, he can't be with us.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
He's up in party's yep, hearty's the way I think
watching some family sport this weekend. Nick, So he's a
weekend off.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
He never has a weekend Okay, but we've been joined
by a very very special guest, alternative cricket commentator, commentator
and the founder of the Beige Brigade, Mike Lane.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
Good morning, Mike, Morning Team.

Speaker 5 (01:12):
How dare Piney get a weekend off? How dare he?

Speaker 4 (01:14):
He heard you were coming on, Mike and he bailed fast.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Listen, Mike, great to have you on the show.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
I know that you spend a lot of time in Wellington,
so it's good to have you back on a Wellington show.
Tell us about the cricket event coming up next Friday
night in town before the black Caps play England in
the One Day International at the stadium.

Speaker 5 (01:32):
Yeah like before, Yeah, you're saying thanks Na. Next Saturday
is the third one Day against England at the at
the Caketon there and the night before we've got a
bit of a special occasion. We're doing the first ever
live podcast we've ever done with our Gender podcast, which
is our daily podcast, and our BYC podcast which is
our cricket podcast with Bill and Cleaver and Paul Ford.

(01:55):
We're going to do a live event down there at
Ship twenty two or the Harperside Event Center there. We've
never done it before. We've roped in Brant Elliott for
the podcast as well. Starts at seven o'clock. It's Halloween
that Friday night, so the idea is we're going to
try and relieve people of their duties on Halloween. So
you don't have to stay at home and put up

(02:16):
with some punishing kids knocking on your door or dress
up you're punishing kids. You can come along to a
live podcast event and we're going to drill down with
He doesn't know it yet, Bran Elliott, but we've got
the over the infamous over from the semi final at
Eden Park, and we're basically going to go through it
second by second with him and really break down that
entire over and if it was actually him that won

(02:38):
us that game or whether it was Januebertory.

Speaker 4 (02:41):
Wow, that'll be interesting. And Mike, it is probably the
one cricket event in October that we can say we'll
definitely go ahead. There's no rain that's going to get
in the way of this.

Speaker 5 (02:48):
One, right, absolutely not. Yeah, you're right, that's interesting. That's
probably been the biggest talking point of the start of
the summer of cricket, is you know, can we sustain
starting our season in October. I'd say we'd probably be
better to shift it into April if we can't play
in January fiveth which looks likely for full of sef

(03:08):
foreseeable due to the fact that ICC will be planting
tournaments in their every January February. But October. Thing's a
bit risky, doesn't it. But you're right, Adam, this is
the one event that will go ahead next next Friday
at seven o'clock. So if you're at a loose end,
we'd love to see there. You can grab your tickets
from the acc in z dot com. You get a
couple of free drinks with your ticket, you get a

(03:29):
start of the ship hat.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Mike.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
I know that you're going to be closely associated with
the management of New Zealand Cricket, but I mean two
of the world's greatest teams of tours at New Zealand,
I mean England and Australia. As a cricket lover, cricket's
my main sport. I love it more than any other sport.
It just makes me cry to think that we couldn't
have them to full houses and big events.

Speaker 5 (03:52):
I know I'm the same as you, Nick like cricketers.
Cricket's my passion and yeah, to see arguably there were
there're T twenty World champions, these two teams, and I've
got some of the best cricket like T twenty players
in the world. You got your train Head, your Mitchell Marsh's,
you Phil Saltz, your Harry Brook. It's a shame to
see that people were just just I don't know if

(04:14):
it's too early for people to turn up, but even
eating Park last night, that was a pretty sad state
of affairs. There's quite a few people turn out on
Monday in christ Church. But I guess people are just distracted.
They've got too many other options. It's really sad to see.
But hopefully hopefully the people at Wellington can turn out
next weekend yep.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
And they are less yellow seats than what we might
be used to at the stadium. That'll be great. And Mike,
I know you've got a special we've got to give
away for a couple of our listeners today, don't Well,
you've been generous enough to offer up a few few
double passes to our Wellington Morning's listeners.

Speaker 5 (04:42):
Yeah, come along to the first ever live podcast event
next Friday night with a couple of double passes. So
if you want to come along on a Halloween evening
on a Friday night after work and join us down
there at the harbor side or Shed twenty two next
to year twenty two, we'd love to see you there.
So happy for them to come along. We'll see you there, coops.
But I believe you're you're preoccupied giving an MC you're

(05:02):
obviously then MC for hire down there.

Speaker 4 (05:04):
Well, yeah, i'll be upstairs at a different venue of
I'm sure I'll sneak along to say gooday, absolutely.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
And it'd be nice to have Matt Heath in town again.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Again.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
I haven't seen him in town for many many years.
Would be great to have him in town as well.

Speaker 5 (05:15):
Yeah, we're gonna will Matt Heath out. He's coming down
as well for this for this live live Partty. He's
always good BEALU. So yeah, we'll hopefull weould have leave
him there for your neck.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Okay, thanks a lot, Mike. We're forward to catching up
with him when you come to town next week.

Speaker 5 (05:30):
Absolutely cheers fellas. All right.

Speaker 4 (05:32):
I eight hundred eighty ten eighty. By the way, if
you do want a double pass to the event next Friday,
and we'll pick out a couple of minutes.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
Are you going to give a question? You're going to
make something, You're gonna make a little bit.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
Who's the main guest speaker that's going to talk through
that infamous Eden park over.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Ah, that's a great question.

Speaker 4 (05:47):
Well I just mention it, so I eight one hundred
eighty ten eighty. And just by the way, tickets are
twenty five bucks. It will get you in, it'll get
you some free merchandise and two beers, So there you go.
Well worth it for cricket fans and the question again,
who is the main guest speaker at that event's next Friday?

Speaker 3 (06:01):
Okay, let's talk NBC final. I mean you makee Max
with that ridiculous.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
I'm actually supporting Otago too, Nick.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Yeah, good, actually yeah, but we all hate Canterbury. But no,
it's not the fact that he's supported. It's a ridiculous hand.
But you know, what do you think is going to happen?

Speaker 4 (06:18):
I think Canterbury will win. Unfortunately it pains me to
say that, but I just think they have proven themselves.
They have been a very consistent team right through this year.
Speaking of sellout crowds, the stadium in christ that just
sold out for this no sold out yesterday, So a
huge occasion for the NPC and I think just and
you look back on the year, Nick, rugby has had
its crossroads moments, absolutely, but I think the NPC this year,

(06:41):
particularly in the regions the likes of the Hawks Bay,
you know, other parts of the country where rugby is
really part of their DNA. They don't get super rugby
franchises hosting home games there. The NBC has been a
resounding success this year. It's been a very successful competition.
Maybe not financially for some of the unions who are
still doing it very tough. But as a product for
rugby fans, I think it's been sensational this year and

(07:04):
have a sold out final in a metropolitan center is fantastic, unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
I mean, I couldn't even believe that, right, Phoenix have
their first home game, and I'm trying, I am trying
to be optimistic about the Phoenix. Right. Chiefly annoyed me
a little bit because you've got a bit grumpy when
people asked them about last season. I mean, why would
he get grumpy talking about last season the season before before,

(07:29):
when they had the really amazing season.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
He wanted to quote it all the time.

Speaker 4 (07:32):
Yeah, well that's that's true. And this was a comedy
he made right at the end of his press conference
yesterday and someone had asked him again, well, you know,
you're back home this year after a pretty pretty woeful
home season last year, how is it different? And he
did get a bit defensive, he did get a bit grumpy.
I guess you do want to look forward than back,
but you do have to acknowledge it. Right, last year

(07:53):
was a not a good season for the Phoenix, particularly
at home. They won once at sky Stadium through all
of last year. And this is just remember last season
was played on the back of you know, one of
their most successful season ever. They got their home semi final.
So yeah, it's it swings and roundabouts, isn't it. There
was some encouragement I think from the Phoenix what we
saw over in Perth last weekend. A few new players,

(08:16):
you know, some from within the A League, some from overseas.
That that triggered I think a bit of excitement. They
ran a woman's in a couple of weeks and that's
obviously a big season for them. Another signing for them
actually being announced at midday which is another huge name,
which which we're looking forward to hearing about it midday.
So there are a couple of weeks away. They will
be the shining light for the Phoenix this year, I believe.

(08:37):
But I think the men they've got to do better
than last year, and if they don't, there's going to
be some serious, serious questions.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
Asked, got to do better than last year? Hi Bar,
you got the goops.

Speaker 4 (08:47):
They got to do better than last Hi Bar.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Breakers looked awful last night.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
I don't know where what I watched the whole as
I was setting up the show today, I watched the
whole game. I mean, they were up by I thought
it was eighteen, but you've got twenty four here, so
I'm not going to argue with you, because you're the
sporting guru.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
I think I've seen it halftime, wasn't it? It was
as high as from I've heard. I didn't watch it,
but I've heard from another colleague who was very upset
by the game too, that it was twenty four at
one point.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Right, Okay, can I say, not only is it one
of the worst performances I've ever seen from a Breakers team,
but it's also for the crowd wise, and they were
playing at north Shore Events Center, which is marginally marginally
bigger than TSB Arena down here, like one hundred seats
more type thing half three quarters full. So it's a
very scary time for the Breakers right now. Their new

(09:33):
management have got to do something, and they've got to
do something quickly.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
And it's a fall from grace because when I lived
in Auckland, it was hard to get tickets to a
Breakers game because they were so enjoyable. The team was
on a roll. It was in the middle of those
three titles they had, you know, they were a team
that everyone wanted to go and watch, and here they
are can't even get people out to the smallish North
Harbor Stadium, which is way out but still gets good

(09:57):
basketball support when it warrants it. So it is concerning
for a team that's, you know, just just had those
ups and downs, but it's in a real rut at
the moment.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
And a couple of weeks ago they were offering half
priced tickets hours five hours before a game online.

Speaker 4 (10:10):
So if this was the Saints, would the coach be gone?

Speaker 3 (10:12):
You know, I don't actually think it's the coaches problem.
I actually liked the coach. I think it's actually the
organization's problem. I think that they've actually given him a
dad team. I think he's got a dud team together,
not good enough team.

Speaker 4 (10:25):
Rather than the Alians on too many players, just like
the NBA. It's an NBA model, isn't it. You rely
on your high score as your big players, and where's
the depth.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
Haven't got the talent really really quickly because we've got
to go change in the staff for the All Blacks.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
Jason Holland obviously spent five years at the Hurricanes here gone.
I don't know. It didn't shock me to see this yesterday.
Got to remember Jason Holland was with the Canes for
five years, a great guy to deal with, really enjoyed,
you know when he was here at the Canes. But
then Clark Laidlaw came in and hererised almost all the
same group of players and last year took them to
a very high level and just lost unluckily in the

(11:00):
semi finals. So yeah, I always wondered, whether you know,
the way he was handpicked, what was the right decision.
Clearly something hasn't worked out. He doesn't want to come back.
He's made this decision. It's not renewing his contract. So
he's gone, and here comes another vacancy for the All Blacks.
But so many coaches around that have the credentials to
step up to international duties.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
So we'll see. Yeah, possibly I got to go.

Speaker 4 (11:23):
Tony Brown was in town recently, a lot of people.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
Talking that name, A lot of people talking that name.
Lovely to talk to you out of Cooper. You can catch,
of course tomorrow between seven and nine with his All
Sports Breakfast. I'm sure he'll have some further information about
what's happening with the All Blacks, and that naming for
the Woman's Phoenix team as well.
