Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talks. EDB, it's the Friday Sport gigoff with
the glass Shop servicing Wellington for over forty years.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Friday Sport time joining us.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
For the first news talk, said B. Well, we've got
an amazing guest to start the show for today, with
Andrew Ortison live from Hagley. I will good morning andrewat.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
How are you doing here? God? Thank you? Yere just
slightly overcast sky, So I think we're gonna get a
four days playing again. And Jesus, the pitch and the
surrounds were completely baked yesterday temperatures reaching thirty degrees. That's
the Canterbury Spring suns. We're in the northwest of drawing
things out like a bit of a kill, I suppose.
So I think the betting conditions, well, I heard.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
That it was twenty seven or twenty eight degrees yesterday
and it's going to be fourteen or sixteen today, So
the problems are going to get a bit of a fright,
aren't they.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
That's right. I put over coat just in case. You've
got to be prepared for these things.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Okay, evenly poised I say first, David ge Gee, I
got excited getting home a little bit earlier three o'clock,
made a cup of tea, put the feet up, watched
it on TV. Got it's good, isn't it?
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Ah love it? And you know this is the change
We've got to seize this summer with the sole Test
series and a good one all bed against England and
they are quite evenly matched, these two sides, and has
been that way for a number of seasons. That were
number of series now over the last few years. But
yesterday yet just seeing came Winninston and get so close
(01:49):
to another what would have been a thirty third Test
Hundrey sitting on thirty thirty two for now, but it
was got to ninety three and dismissed. I actually thought
one of the stars for me was Tom Latham, his
positive intent at the start of the day to get
to forty seven and now we're still up playing looks
at the wicket forty one not out. He could be
ballistic when he wants to be, and the mercurial Tim
(02:12):
Saudi with him. So who knows how long the suddening
is going to last beyond three hundred and nineteen For eight.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Well, we've seen Glem Phillips get going, haven't we.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
We've seen him.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
He could get another fifty and you never know Suthing's
going to get one hundred and fifty or two do it,
so we could actually end up four hundred.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
I think there's are critical period this morning, this early
Stanza with Phillips and Saudi there. If they were able
to put on yeah, fifty runs, sixties runs to finish
the innings off, they'd be crucial runs in the match,
given the context that England's going to get some decent
batting conditions today and tomorrow. By the looks of things,
average first in things here at Hagley from thirteen tests
two hundred and ninety two, so they're ahead of that
(02:51):
so far, but there have been a couple of week
teams that have contributed to that. But I just think
it'll be a fascinating DA because England they're going to
be of course aggression, they're bristling with aggression with the
bat as we've seen over the last couple of years
under Brenda McCullum and Ben Stokes, and the chance for
the the New Zealand pace attack, which is really just
that mixture of youth and experience. Today, I think Nathan
(03:11):
Smith on debut, willow rope plenty to playful for him
in front of his home crowd, Matt Henry likewise, and
Tim Sowley in his final Test series. So I'm looking
forward to that.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Andrew the thing that got to me out of es
Day's Test and where we saw the green green grass
of home as the wicket was, surely we thought the
Seamans would have a little bit more success than they usually.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Would get there.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
Yeah, I think they probably missed out. That's where I
think lathan' sillings was quite crucial. I mean, Conway got
out relatively cheaply, but you know that court in Bold
for two, but then you had Williamson and Layton then
they were able to get I think those crucial second,
third and four fig partnerships all in excessive half century partnership,
and that just provided some stability. I mean, Ravendra looked
tremendous again, he just looks he's just so elegant to
(03:56):
watch that got to thirty four at relatively soft dismissal
to shorten mid wickets. But certainly he is just going
from strength to strength. I think with what he might
be able to contry. Viewed over the course of the summer,
he seems a future captain and waiting for me as well.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Yeah, he's definitely done all the media stuff exactly right
in there listening to media. My eyes water. I said,
come on, man, how can he speak so so well
and have all the information? Barbie Army highlight of England
touring New Zealand as the Barbie Army to me. I
know that you're a cricket purist, so the Barbie Army
is probably a bit annoying to you. But gee, I
(04:31):
love the Barbie Army.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
No, I've got plenty of time for the Barbie Army.
I think they bring a real terrific spirit to the game.
They've got the right attitude at times, and I find
it always really stirring. Actually at the start of the
day's spay when they give a rendition of Jerusalem, they've
got the trumpet there. They just bring the right attitude
and I think it's it's not over egged too much.
(04:54):
I think it's just it's it really just just adds
to the ambiance of the whole occasion, and you know,
Test cricket definitely needs that at the moment given it
the struggles that it's had over time and possibly will
continue to do so.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
I love their quick wit. I love their quick win.
I don't know where they come up with it or
how they do it, but by god, their their wit
is unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
The doing. Michael Jackson, Yeah, I think.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
Just from Mery there was a there was a some
sort of a review or something, and then I think
just almost immediately afterwards they had a bit of the
Beatles when it be You know, that's just that just
adds the whole occasion.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Joy looking forward to catching up when you come to Wellington.
We'll get you in the studio, have a chat.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
Magic Nick looking forward to that to be a cracker
as well.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
All right, Andrew Oldison there, what is our cricket expert
what do you call them?
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Cricket guru of everything? Morning Sports Reader early edition. Yeah,
absolute legend.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
You know what I love listen to in the morning
of that first first edition stuff because you know, he's
as tired as how he's giving all this and all
the names and all the people now there's such big names.
He's master at doing it as you are coops as well. Right,
let's get on we've been just joined by Adam Cooper
the rest of sports. Now let's let's look at basketball. Firstly,
the Breakers absolutely got stuffed. I went to sleep after
(06:13):
the first quarter last night. They got absolutely stuffed.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Of course, it was a shoka, wasn't it. You know,
I don't know how. I mean, you'd have a far
better idea of the sort of rationale behind everything that's
played out this week. But it's so strange. You know,
this momentum that was building around this new guy, Taco Fall,
you know from the NBA, a lot of talking points.
Then the coach comes out two days ago saying I
actually didn't want this. You know this, I was pushed.
(06:36):
You know, this was pushed by a management here and
I had really no play to it. I was enjoying
our winning team with who we had and didn't want
to get rid of the other import And you know
that's all orchestrated. Did the coach come out and say
that just to make us talk about it a little
bit more? I guess we'll never really know. But it's
been a fascinating week and it's culminated in an absolute flop.
This Taco Fall deboos it gets a few points gets
(06:57):
a few rebounds, but they have an absolute shocker by
nearly forty points over in Ilawara.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Yeah, and I watched the first quarter. The first time
we touched the ball but done. The second time we
touched the ball was a block, third time was a block.
I said, oh, here we go, and then nothing.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Yeah, but if a flop, but I mean, I don't
want it too March. I don't think it'd be. We've
got in christ Church coming up on Thursday, but particularly
in Wellington on Saturday, with the Breakers coming and everything that,
you know, it bodes to be with you know some
Saints connections in Sydney as well who are coming to
be are in the next Saturday, and well, I mean
the Breakers. I think when I lived in Auckland, they
were the best show in town, much like you know
(07:32):
the Saints are for us here in Wellington now. But
the Breakers are in that next next day, the next day,
part of a very popular and competent league by global standard.
And I think it's going to be such an exciting
weekend next weekend here. I can't remember a weekend like
it in Wellington for some time. And we got Test
cricket on at the basin that the Breakers in town.
It's some remarkable really and that.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
Tuco poll thing. I mean I would just go along
to see just to see him. But you're not going
to see a specimen like that. You know, it's amazing,
it's going to be amazing.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
I'm looking for a two point two eight is it?
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Seven foot six in the You're not going to see
a man.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
It's crazy. My brother's a lot taller than me, but
he would even dwarf my brother, who's you know, six four?
Speaker 3 (08:12):
Yeah, no, that's a very tall man. Next Saturday night,
Saturday week, Oh gosh, Breakers versus King, big big event
in Wetington Rugby. Let's you wouldn't give me me your
mark last week? You and Bloody Piney wouldn't give me
your mark for the All Blacks because you wanted to
see the Italian game before you gave the mark on
the season.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
And isn't it good? We waited?
Speaker 3 (08:30):
It wasn't a good. Well, obviously the points went down
a bit. I mean I went down from a seven
I called a seven and a half, didn't.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
I I'm going to give them a six now? Yeah,
you know I was really disappointed by that game. If
you're going to take your finance seriously enough that you
name your best players to finish off the year against
the team that you're most likely beat. They make sure
they're actually coming to the party and want to play.
They just they just were flat. They couldn't build any momentum.
They struggled with just basic errors and it left for
(08:58):
me thinking back to you know we were talking about
after you know, those Argentina tests. Here, just just a
real lack of decision making and sort of any kind
of ability to produce a confident and you know, eighty
minute performance. So quite a disappointing way to end. I
think they'll be relieved more than anyone else that the
season's over, and you know, Razor can kind of get
(09:19):
above water and catches breath a bit because I think
there's still a fair few questions aren't answered from his
first year in charge.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
I will say I've still got confidence.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
I think. So it's a rugby now, it's a long
term game, right, You're in a four year cycle. That
will be the ultimate judge. But yeah, it's going to
be interesting real quickly.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Because we've got to go in a minute. But Phoenix
ever buy this week? But there Derby next week in
Auckland is almost sold out. I would have where's the
promoter in this? Why didn't they take it to eat
In Park?
Speaker 2 (09:47):
I disappointing. They seem pretty despondent and wanting to make
any change here, and I reckon if they moved it
from Mount Smart to Eden Park with its forty three thousand,
they would have sold all those tickets, but not to
be I guess they. I think with football people like
their own fortress. They get used to their own you know,
their own venus, their own little quirks that each stadium has.
(10:09):
And I guess they've got a big support base now
that are starting to build a routine of going to
the same venue, sitting in their same spot. So I
think with football more than anything else, Nick, maybe they
like that, you know, familiarity a little bit more. But yeah,
we talked about I know I've got very little time,
but the Your Night round last weekend was rather disappointing.
Seeing the Phoenix with a great win over that they
ground out over Melbourne victory in front of about three people,
(10:32):
that was pretty well.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
They pinched a basketball idea and tried to duplicate it.
You know, you just said it all in the sentence.
Before they have their own fortresses, their own crowds, their
own thing, I mean taking them all to one town.
Silly idea for football. Thanks as always, Andrew, Andrew, Andrew
and Adam Cooper for sports. Oh my gosh a mayor,
(10:54):
mevn a mayor. You can call Catch Coops tomorrow morning
at seven o'clock, seven to nine on his award Winnings
