Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk said b the Friday Sport kickoff on
Wellington Mornings with Rslan Handel and Vains. If your fleet
management repairs to.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Them joining us for Friday Sport is All Sports briefist

(00:43):
hosts Adam Cooper, Good Morning Coops, Bony Neck and weekend
sports host Jason Pine and Piney, how are you good?

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Thanks?

Speaker 4 (00:49):
Thanks very good Now, Piney, you just come back from
the Hurricanes press conference.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
You're out there. I can see the buzz on your face.

Speaker 5 (00:55):
Yeah. They well they they've worked it out. They put
up two of their best best chatters Duplasskoithi and Ruben
Love as well as Corey Jane who could he could
he could talk for New Zealand at the Olympics. You know,
just there is a real buzz down there, Nick, you
can feel it amongst the team even going down that
was at Sky Stadium. The always have the thing like

(01:16):
a captain the day before, Yeah, captain's trying media conference
at the venue and just being down there and I
just had a glimpse onto the grass there and yeah,
it's gonna be a big occasion there tomorrow afternoon, a
really re big occasion. I think we're talking over thirty
thousand turning up. It's the number that's been thrown around
two excellent rugby teams full of exciting players and in

(01:39):
particular exciting young players and a lot of key positions.
Talk about loose forwards in the back three with dups
and Reuben Love. I just think it'll be an absolute
boomer there tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (01:49):
And excuse us if we're all three of us a
bit emotional, because this is big.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
This is pretty damn big, isn't it. I mean, I'm
feeling it.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
I can see it in your eyes, Coops, and I
can see it in your eyes Piney.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
It's big.

Speaker 6 (02:00):
I mean, considering where the Hurricanes have been these the
last five years. You know, four or five years ago,
we had this hugely young group of young Ellington players
that had come through the school system and developed, and
most of them have stayed, and most of them are
now some of the top players in the competition and
likely first time All Blacks or next year you talk
about Rubin Love and Billy Prompt and Peter Larkin, some
of these guys who have been around this environment for

(02:21):
some time and everyone's been patient. They haven't made the
semi finals since twenty nineteen, they haven't played a semi
final at home since twenty sixteen, the last time they
won the competition. So this is just absolutely huge for
the franchise. All these young players involved, and of course
the veterans T. J. Peninada and Brad Shields were here
last time they were in this position in twenty sixteen.

(02:41):
So as Corey Jane has Piney mentioned assistant coach. So
in terms of the new group of players, they don't
seem to have been daunted by this occasion. They spoke
to Billy Propped yesterday, spoke earlier in the week to
a couple of the coaches and players as well, and
they're just carrying on doing what they're doing. They know
that if they backed themselves back what has brought them
the success this year, they'll get the job done against
the Chiefs.

Speaker 5 (03:01):
They often say that these are the games that you
want to play in, you know as players that they
and you can use any cliche you like, but they're
walking towards this. They're not going to shy away from
the harsh glare of this game. Neck I get the
feeling guys like Ruben Love, Brad and you'll say Billy Proctor,
the youngsters, and let's not forget in the in the
chief side as well, some very very good young players there,

(03:23):
some of Penny Female Wallace, t t Cheepers, Damien Mackenzie,
the best first five in the country. These guys aren't
going to shy away from the occasion. These are the
games that they all say they want to play in
and tomorrow then they get the chance to do it.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
And it's normally or normally always the semi final, because
once you're in the final, one team's going to win,
one team's going to lose. But the semi final that
last chance to play in the big dance.

Speaker 5 (03:50):
What also, if you at least if you make the final,
you've made the final, it's right. If you lose the
semi final, it's almost like it's a dud. Not many
people remember the losing semi finalists. If you think long
and hard, you can remember the two teams in a
grand final. But and this won't be a successful year
for them. As great as year it's been. It's been
a marvelous year played, marvelous football. The standard of football

(04:10):
has been marvelous. You know, if the Hurricanes lose tomorrow night,
it won't go down as a success.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
I think it will.

Speaker 5 (04:17):
I think it will to a degree.

Speaker 6 (04:19):
Yeah, pro where they've been. I mean, they'll be disappointed
and they'll you know, by no means that they think
we want uses, but we all want more. But I
don't think you could call it a failure if they
lose from this point. But that's certainly capable of making
the final. And I think it'll be disappointing. Disappointing indeed,
if they can't get to this final hurdle after the
season that they've had. But jeez, it's going to be
tough one.

Speaker 5 (04:39):
I think it's going to be like one scenario is
they do lose tomorrow, that's one. That's one outcome, right,
And so if in thirty hours from now they haven't
made the Grand Final, I don't think you can say
it's been a terrible season.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
I didn't say terrible, but I don't I think we'll
be disappointed. Yeah, of course, you know what I mean,
because I think we've expected more.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
And I said after it.

Speaker 4 (04:56):
And you know, I am a footy guy, I'm a
rugby guy, right, I said, I think it's one of
the greatest games of rugby I'd seen for a long
long time. When the Chiefs played the Hurricanes in Hamilton,
it was a fair bulus game of football. We're we're
all lose. It was a fabulous game of football. And
if we get that tomorrow, rugby is a winner.

Speaker 6 (05:13):
And there are two teams that just play for eighty minutes.
You know, the Chiefs took the Hurricanes to the sword
at that game in Hamilton, and you know it wasn't
until that was a seventy eighth minute penalty to break
camera that they got through. So it's you can't write
anyone off at any point of this game tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
All right, let's go from success to failure for black Caps.
How bad are they?

Speaker 3 (05:34):
Jason? What's gone wrong? I'm wordless.

Speaker 5 (05:39):
Well, parts of it have been abysmal, some parts of
it have been okay. I think the bowling across the
two games, for the most part's been all right. Up
until the eighteenth over yesterday it was terrific. The Westernds
one hundred and twelve for nine and then in the
space of two overs they scored thirty seven runs and
took the game away from New Zealand. So it just
shows to me how quickly T twenty can swing on

(06:02):
moments and on decisions made or not made. Look, they'll
be very disappointed. A lot has been made rightly so
too on the lack of preparation this team got. They
had no warm up games. I can't remember what there was.
England or Australia turned up and they still only had
nine guys because everyone was coming in from the IPL.
But they still had a warm up game. They said
all played with nine. They got out there and tied,

(06:23):
tried the conditions out. The first time that team had
played together in those conditions was the other day when
they lost to Afghanistan and keeps.

Speaker 4 (06:30):
One of the things that gets to me is that
the players wanted to come and have a week off
here in New Zealand instead of going over and preparing.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Didn't they So they're going to take some of the responsibility.

Speaker 6 (06:39):
Yeah they can, and in part you can't blame them
for that. But at the same time, there could have
there been I guess a compromise and there's still been
a time for family, but also time for a warm
up game. Because you can't blame you know, the likes
of you know, the Wellington based players. Some of them
like the Conways and Ruts and Revengers and stuff to
want to spend a bit more time with their families
back here before another extended, prolonged period overseas. But it

(06:59):
is a World Cup and they needed a warm up game,
that's the matter. But I mean, how did it get
to the end of the Westerndies innings yesterday? Have Daryl
Mitchell and Mitchell Santon are bowling at the death. That's
a strange run. Whether that was an oversight or planned,
I'm not sure, but that's an interesting part and one
thing that started to notice in the past summer as well.
That's also creeping and especially in that first loss to
afghanistand the fielding. New Zealand used to be one of

(07:22):
the best fielding teams in the world. That's what won
them a lot of games and made them the force
that they were, and they're not at the moment. That's
the standards there have really slipped and it's culminated into
embarrassing losses at this tournament.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
Can I ask you both quick, really quickly, it's it out,
that's it gone, and they're gone pretty much. Yeah, gosh,
let's talk about a team that's been amazing and hasn't
really got the publicity it should have got because probably
the Hurricanes are doing so well. The Central Poles the
top of the A and Z Premiership. They've had about
ten injuries. They keep on bringing these players that no

(07:55):
one's ever heard of. They keep on winning, and yet
we're not talking about them enough.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Coops. Why are we not talking Poles?

Speaker 6 (08:02):
Well we are now and I think they need as
much publicity and as much praise as they they can get.
Their eight from nine and they've lost three of their
marquee players this year. Tiana Botsudo was one of them.
She came back last weekend. Actually was out there and
Potty too when they played on Monday night. Was really
enjoyable watching just how you were it, Yeah, how much
of a class they were and how much the Potty
Doer fans in particular were enjoying them having them out
there as well. So Tiana came back. But yeah, they're

(08:24):
still without Maddie Gordon, that's been another key loss for
them in the mid court, and then Shooter A media
Warmsley as well. These are all silver ferns, but they've
just managed to find a way to bring in some
players and the very experienced Clear Kurston just luckily accepted
an SOS call to come back down out of retirement
from Popamore where she's living and play for the Polse
week and week out. And she was very impressive in

(08:46):
that game on Monday night against the Mystics as well,
just feeding the ball through at a rapid pace, some
great assists and just being brilliant on defense as well.
So they're having a fantastic season and a huge game
against the Tactics this Sunday.

Speaker 5 (08:58):
Though, Yeah mess of four fifteen on Sunday down in
christ Church. The Tactics are also eight wins from nine.
I've just had a very quick look at the tab odds.
It's one of those where they can't spot them a
dollar eighty seven each. So this has had their head.
Two teams top of the table. Yeah, four to fifteen
on Sunday. Make sure you're somewhere near a television.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
Or gold sport.

Speaker 6 (09:17):
Yeah to listen to that one. And last time they
played it was thirty six thirty. That's how haf the
defense was. So except to expect a brutal one down
there in christ Stitchue and I.

Speaker 4 (09:26):
Can't let you both go without. Saints are back at home,
got one minute to talk about it. They playing the
Franklin Bulls equal on the table. Basically, all I can
say there might be a little bit of a surprise
at the Saints game on Sunday. And that's all I'm saying.

Speaker 5 (09:41):
Are you h Are you not going to be yelling
at the refs?

Speaker 3 (09:44):
Gosh, guys, don't be so horrid. So who's got that
one pinting?

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Well?

Speaker 5 (09:49):
I just want to say on the basketball, I watched
the Nelson Giants play last night and I had some
time in Nelson. They had thirty years since they first
won the NBL nineteen ninety four. Had at a special
celebration there and it already took me back to those
golden days. And you'll remember these cause you know when
you had that big flowing mullet and you used to
welcome the team out the exchequer Saints. You know, you
brought Kenny mcfaddon out and we know what he did

(10:09):
for the game here those glory days of the eighties
and nineties. It really brought it back for me. You know,
you couldn't get a seat at the nine August Center
and then they end up losing Nelson. They did, they did,
they lost unfortunately, but can of very good team. They've
won eleven in a row.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
Now, yeah, so who are you going for? Coops? Saints?
Of course, Sat, I mean you're right here.

Speaker 6 (10:25):
Of course I'm going to say that, And.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
Well you want me to do the next hour. Don't
want me to walk out of the studios. But guys,
have a great weekend. I know that we're all going
to be pumped for the Hurricanes. Adam Cooper tomorrow morning
on the All Sports Breakfast and weekend sports hosts Jason Pine,
I'll be full of the Hurricanes tomorrow. I mean, don't
turn your radio anywhere else. All you'll be hearing is
hurricane stuff.
