from news Talk.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Said b.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
It's the Friday Sport kickoff with the Glass Shop servicing
Wellington for over forty years, joining us for.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Friday Sport Kickoff this week because weekend sports hosts Jason
pine Good morning, Piney, Good morning that how you doing great?
Great to see you. Haven't seen you much lately. You
had All Sports Breakfast host Adam Cooper, Good morning, Adam.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
I'll send you a bit lately.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
I'll see you too much. You're my boss. I see
you far too much. I enjoy seeing. Yeah, you love
writing those written warnings out all the time? Yeah you
need it?
Speaker 4 (00:55):
You do you want one?
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Do you need one?
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Wanted to get a red fully shield challenge against Tasman
on Sunday. Are going to start with you on this one, Coop,
because I want to go to Piney on the next topic.
I'm you're probably too young to understand the real passion,
the real love, the real meaning of the Ramfley Shield.
People my age, Pioney's probably a little bit too young too,
But people my age are not.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
I know.
Speaker 5 (01:21):
I'm sorry to button, but no, I'm absolutely aware of
the importantly shield. Yeah, yeah, it's yeah for me.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Wayne Smith? Do you remember the Wayne Do you remember
the Wayne Smith?
Speaker 5 (01:28):
Wayne Smith scoring in Bernie's corner to take it away
from us in nineteen eighty two.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Do you remember the date? I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
I remember sitting in the standard rating because we downstairs.
That's it's got keeps on this, Yeah, we are sorry, keeps.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
Just sit here.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Sorry.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
But I think very exciting, isn't it. I mean, I
actually remember one of my earliest years of supporting Wellington
was that ill fated challenge down in christ Church when
we were absolutely screwed over by by Steve Walsh and
the Canterbury team. But anyway, it's another chance for Wellington
to hold the shield again. Obviously had it a couple
of years ago, quite short lived. But I think you know,
when you talk about the passion and what this means,
(02:01):
look at how Tasman celebrated when they won that thriller
the other night, and how much passion is on the
line every time we've seen Hawk's Bay defend it in
the last three While hearing from the Wellington players and
coaching staff this week about just what it means and
how excited they are, to get this chance to bring
back the Shield and it is something that brought so
much joy to I think the capitol and the players
(02:23):
and the community here for a very short time back
in twenty twenty two. It even came into the studio Nick.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Me and Piney got our photo taken together. Whether it's
on my file, Me and Piney and the Radflee Shield.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
There you go. So will this happen again? I think
Wellington are in prime chance to do it to All
Blacks are back, Billy prop to Rubin Love. They've they've
joined the team today at training. We'll wait to see
exactly what the coaches decide in terms of whether they're
in the reserves, whether they're starting. I reckon just play them,
play them and get as many minutes out of them
as well. So put a lot of experienced players in there.
(02:53):
These guys are ready to go and they can win
the Shield for it.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
See.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
We could have an argument about their coops, but I
don't want to know the rick warning so I kind
of I think that they should have the bead, should
bring them on because I think it's the other team
members that have got them to where they are top
of the table. Don't mix with the chemistry. Pinety, I'm
coming to you on this. You note you had a
little sneak preview when we were talking about it before
the show on the Ta b Odds.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
No one can pick this, no Oka.
Speaker 5 (03:17):
I think Wellington are very slight favorites one a five
to one eighty seven or something like that. So basically
that means here they can't be split. It's a fifty
to fifty proposition two unbeaten sides. You'd think that Tasman
might be the you know favorite being at home, but no,
I look, I tend to agree with Coops. I'd play
Ruben Love and Billy Proctor from them the start one
(03:37):
hundred percent. I mean, look, they're both all blacks. Yeah,
I mean why get why get why get twenty minutes
out of them when you can get eighty minutes out
of them.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Because the other guys have had got all the chemistry
and they've built them.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
I understand that too.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
I understand that too.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
But you know it's like would be like tee what
it would be like you going you're going away coming
back and being available and you know, Ethan doing the
show rather than you bringing you on in the eleven
o'clock hour.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Well, I can't see anyth wrong with that. I think
our listeners are all sad.
Speaker 5 (04:04):
I know what you're saying.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
All our listeners are saying, Well, that would be perfect.
Speaker 5 (04:07):
I know what you're saying. As far as the yeah,
you know, Chemra's fair. But I think a guy like
TJ Clark, who's been playing really well at fullback, if
he sees Ruben Love come back, he thinks, you know,
Ruben Love is an all Black, he deserves his place. Yes,
he hasn't played yet, but like I'll tell you what,
if they win the Shield, I think Ruben Love and
Billy Proctor will enjoy it just as much as all that.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
I have no question with that. Let's get a quick
yes or no. Who's going to win? Who do you
think Wellington's got it? Please don't want it?
Speaker 2 (04:34):
I agree? So that's three one on that one.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Piney, I want to start with you on this one
because the old Bublin Squeaks Wellington Olympic, that's what they
call the called in my day, you know the Bublin
Squeaks win a Chatham Cup. Now they have one, and
I remember them winning it once before. I don't know
how many times they won it, but I can remember
them winning it. I mean, this is a pretty big deal.
Speaker 5 (04:51):
Yeah, they want up No. Nine, So fifteen years between trophies,
it is a big deal. Chatham Cup's probably, you know,
probably the most recognizable football trophy in New Zealand. I
guess it's a bit similar. It's nowhere near the prestige
of the ran Philly Shield, but yeah, I think if
you offered a lot of players the chance to in
the league, which is their bread and butter, or win
the Chatham Cup, I think a lot of them would
take the Chatham Cup.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (05:13):
I think Wellington Olympic have been a good side for
a long time now, and under the stewardship of Paul Liffele,
he's their coach. They've got a stacked team. It took
to penalties though to get the job done. I was
delighted to see it though, and to have the Chatham
Cup back in the Wellington Olympic clubrooms is something they'll
enjoy coops.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
Again, like the Ranviilly Shield, it just seems to bring
out so much passion and that they talked about it.
A lot of the younger players remembered, you know, the
guys that have been tied for Olympic with Olympic for
some time, even as kids. They remembered what it was
like for those senior players at the time in two
thousand and nine, and they knew, I think the task
at hand, knowing that they have had such a good year,
they're one of the best clubs in the country, and
knew just how close they were to winning that cup.
(05:54):
So we're also going to chat to Scott Bisalai on
the show tomorrow, who saved the winning penalty. He's the
goalkeeper for Olympic. He let through four then save the fifth,
which is what won them the matt and you know
he had to really sort of hold his own under
pressure to help, you know, win that after scores were
won all after extra time. So yeah, really looking forward
to chatting to him and congratulations to them. Obviously this
(06:16):
could lead into more things that like so o WEFC
Champions League, you know, should other results go their way
later this year, and possibly the FIFA Club World Cup
as well, and they're certainly capable of it.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Wow, that's amazing. Let's talk about that moment. I don't
know whether you saw it. Piney Me and Coops talked
about it this morning with Prince Charles and the Black Ferns,
I mean, King Charles, Prince Charles, King Charles, I've got
to get with the times. I thought it was an
incredible moment and put him pulling out his handkerchief and
wiping the tears.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
From his face. But it was all every both parties
was genuine.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
It showed a real human It showed a real humanists.
I thought to a guy who often is you know,
and Royalty has often you know, displayed as this, you know,
kind of separate, stiff up a lip. You know, you don't,
you don't mix with the normal people. But yeah, I
think it was another demonstration of just how real the
black Ferns are. They all think, of all of our
sports teams are the ones who are most authentic and
(07:08):
therefore probably the easiest to like. I hope they can
go out there at twicking over the week. England, Yes,
well I think England are favorite.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
Okay coops, Yeah, tough game, really tough game. I want
to talk about the moment because you must, moment was amazing.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
I'm glad it was.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Other people thoughts you don't have that feeling? Well, how's
how's often snobby child's going to react here and to
see him just react with this little twinkle in his eyes,
smile on his face opened up. That was It was
walls down and very very special, very special.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Thank you both guys.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
Didn't get a chance to talk about the ill fated
Pakistan Test match.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
I was so bristof about that. That was not good.
Uh that's a Piney's got. Who have you got?
Speaker 3 (07:47):
Now you've got someone very famous, James Stacy Jones. Stacy
Jones on the show tomorrow. My god, I'll be listening
to that. And of course Adam Cooper is on All
Sports Breakfast tomorrow from seven till nine.
