Speaker 2 (00:27):
Join us for Frids, Join ours for Friday Sport this weekend.
Friday Sport Kickoff this weekend is sports host Jason pine Morning, Piney.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Hello, Nick, how are you?
Speaker 4 (00:39):
I'm good?
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Thank you?
Speaker 4 (00:40):
Just on the road back from a Wellington Phoenix media station.
So yeah, A league is getting a closer.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Oh my god this weekend. Let's talk about it a minute.
News Talks B Wellington's news director Max Toll.
Speaker 5 (00:52):
Morning, Maxie, good morning.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Should we should we sing pioneer song? We know it's
a birthday A two you.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Happy birthday, dear Pieyer, Happy birthday, my dear.
Speaker 5 (01:05):
Friends, Steve one years going strong.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
He's no were there sixty folks, He's no weird.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Dear Happy birthday, Piney, Piney.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Do you reckon that's we could have come off.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
We could have covered off. We're going to cover it
off Rugby.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
You reckon that was good on barrel bud Road. Do
you reckon that was as good as barrelond bud Row
To the President anyway, black Caps Piney black Caps bowled
out in there for forty six.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
What the hell happened?
Speaker 5 (01:33):
Incredible? Incredible.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
I was at a function last night and they save
my phone off, came out, turned my phone back on
and looked at the score. You know, because I knew
India had won the toss and I knew that we've
got a couple of wickets early. But when I turned
the phone back on and would bowled them out for
forty six, it's just so hard to comprehend given the
fact that, like I say, they won the toss at home,
(01:55):
batted and we're all out for their lowest ever Test
score against the New Zealand side that, let's be honest,
has battled in the last couple of Test matches to
get breakthroughs let lone runs of wickets. It's an incredible
days cricket.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
You know.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
You have to give it to Matt Henry and it
really does make an absolute mockery of the fact that
he didn't play either of the Test matches against Rolanka
a month or so ago. But yeah, what a day
of cricket for New Zealands. And maybe there be a
couple more of them.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Max Toe, you would have been like me.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
You would have said, oh, well, they'll get a couple out,
this wicket will dry out and away they'll go. They'll
still end up four hundred and twenty for two by
the end of play.
Speaker 5 (02:33):
As Piney says, you know, it seemed like almost everything
was set up for us to lose, and lose quite
handling poor form coming in. You looked at the lineups
and you're questioning, well, why are India only playing one
pace bowler and we've got three out there. They win
the toss, they must know something we don't. It's their
home ground and we just absolutely skittle them. Unbelievable. I
(02:54):
was in the same situation as Pony. I was in
a movie theater, chicily checking my phone ten for three.
I couldn't believe it. Then I looked again, thirty for
three and I'm here we go. India are going to
put on a comfortable score here, kept the pressure up,
took the catches. Unbelievable. One of the best days of cricket,
certainly the best probably since the Test Championship Final.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
Right, let's talk MPC.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yes can good luck for the rest of the series
and good luck with today and everything else. NPC semi final,
Wellington Whitekeatto. It doesn't get any bigger than the Sky
Stadium tomorrow night seven oh five, Max Toll, What are
your predictions?
Speaker 3 (03:25):
What are your thoughts?
Speaker 5 (03:26):
Well, yeah, I'll be there there with coops at the
ground tomorrow. It's going to be tough for a lot
of players missing, obviously, the All Blacks calling, calling up
some of those lines players back into the side, a
couple of guys missing from injury, A lot of depth
in this line squad obviously, But you're facing a White
Katto just beating the last year's winners and possible favorites
at the time Tadanaki in an absolute battler of a
(03:47):
quarter final last weekend. Why kat are gonna have their
blood up? It's going to be a close one. I'll
take Wellington just because I'm loyal to my home city.
But yeah, it's no given that they'll get through.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
What are your thoughts, Piney? I think Wellington will have
Waikato easily. I think Waykeetto used up all their guests
on taran Eki last week.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
Well normally i'd say that's the case, and you look
at Waikatou and they only qualify. What's seventh in the
regular season, very inconsistent. But then you look at the
players missing for Wellington and one in particular, and that's
Jackson Garden Baship, who has been terrific at first five
for Wellington this season. He's not there. He looked off
at the hamstring injury in the quarter final last week
(04:27):
and we just worried when we saw that whether that
would affect his ability to play in the semi final.
And so it's proven. And then you add on top
of that Peter Umonger Jensen Peter Larky has been called
into the All Blacks, so he won't be there. And
of course the All Blacks who came back last week.
Having said that, Brad shields us back and he brings
a massive boost to the forward pack. Coopless he could
Epi back from his broken jaw. I think they'll have enough, Nick,
(04:50):
I think they will. I just I think it'll largely
depend on how Callum Harkin goes running the cutter at
first five. He's a good kid, but he's an experience
compared to Jackson Garden Bashop. I'll be keeping a fairly
close eye on him tomorrow night.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Thanks Bani.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Now we've got to give away to ge on the show.
We love giving things away on the show. We have
four tickets to Wellington's Lions semi final against Waikato tomorrow
and night at sky Stadium. We'll also throw in four
Lions beanies too, but you need to be able to
pick these tickets up from our Wellington CBD office by
four pm today because that's what time we close it.
And you'll have to answer this question in full. I
(05:26):
don't want a part time question Tomorrow night's MPC semifinals
at sky Stadium. But where ouse did Wellington Lions play
some of their home matches earlier this season?
Speaker 4 (05:35):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Eight hundred and eighty ten eighty, I want the full name.
I'm not just going to the area, Piney. I've got
to start with you Max. I know you'll have a
lot to say on this too. The new A League
football season starts this weekend Auckland FC. I mean this
is going to be huge for the game in this country.
First ever game tomorrow at five pm. I know you're
speaking to one of the owners tomorrow on your show
(05:55):
five pm versus Brisbane Row at Mount Smart Stadium, and
I know you're.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
Going up for it.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Will they be able to make a giant enough splash.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
I think so.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:08):
I think, well, they've certainly got the backing. We know,
Bill Foley, their owner is, is not short of a bob,
so I think they'll be okay resource wise. I think
there's an appetite for it in Auckland. You know, whenever
the Phoenix used to go up there, which they won't
now be doing that. Of course, they used to get
good crowds. You know, twenty thousand regularly would turn up
to watch the Phoenix. I guess the big question Nick
(06:29):
is will they you know, turn up week in, week out. Tomorrow,
by the sound of it, is going to be sold
out at at Mount Smart Stadium, which I think will
be an amazing you know, start to light for Auckland.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
The f seed.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
They've assembled a good roster, They've prioritized KEYWI players, got
some good imports. By the looks of things, I think
they've done everything right. They've reached the start line in
really good shape. I guess now it's a matter of
getting off the blocks and seeing how they go across
a regular season. Look on absolutely looking forward to seeing
how they go. I can't wait for the derby matches.
(07:01):
Against Wellington Phoenix, the one here and in three weeks time,
and then a couple of at Auckland. I think it's
great for the game here and you know, creates interest,
it's got, as I say, good financial backing. You can't
wait to see how they go.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Now, I'm just going to go to Max. But what
time are you speaking to Arlie Williams, the ex All Black.
That's a that's a shareholder and an orkne Seacuse I
want to listen to that.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
Yeah, he'll be on the show tomorrow between twelve and one.
We're doing the show from Mount Smart Stadium tomorrow, so
he'll be joining us at some stage. He's got a
pretty packed diary, as you'd understand that sometime between twelve
and one.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Perfect Then the Phoenix opened this season against Western United
at Sky Stadium on Sunday at four pm.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Max.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Can the Phoenix back up their best ev season last year?
I watched them last night at training and I watched
the coach being interviewed and I kind of got a
little bit worried. It felt a little bit lackluster to me?
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Did it to you? Have you seen anything?
Speaker 5 (07:51):
Well, it's it's it's too early to say never never
judge a book or a sports team on preseason. You'll
know that. Obviously with the with the Saints, you know,
you could get there.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Feeling when the pre when they're excited and barred up,
and I just didn't feel that they were.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
But my humble opinion.
Speaker 5 (08:07):
I'm all worried. I'm optimistic, but I do a small
part of me worries that the momentum that the team's
got in the city, the fans. You know, I was
at that semi final, most felt like most of the
city was as well. I really hope the fans can
stay behind this team. Obviously a lot of changes, but
good players coming in. Mahodro Haus is back, a couple
of Japanese imports, Ishigo and nagasaw I've got a new keeper.
(08:30):
Absolute wrench to lose Alex Paulson, especially to our new rivals.
But Yami the new keeper coming in, Let's see how
he goes. I really hope the momentum stays behind this team.
They've kept the coach, They've kept Jancarlo Italiana. I think
that was probably the biggest one you wanted to hold
on to. Obviously, Paulson's a loss, so it will be
a loss, but we should keet to stay behind this team.
You know, you look at the bookies and we're we're
(08:51):
in there. We're in their top four or five favorites
to make the final, to win the league. Obviously a
lot of change is going to be difficult, but I'm optimistic.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Heini. Now, correct me and tell me I'm wrong with
my vibe.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
You're in there, you watching them tray and you're seeing it,
you're feeling, And tell me I've got it completely wrong.
From a two minute TV one news skip yesterday.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
Yeah, you've got it completely wrong. From a one news
news item last night, Nikiah, I was out there today,
out there yesterday.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Sim Payne was.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Up for Medius. It was cost of Barbarusas and they're
both fizzing for it, absolutely fizzing for it. It's a
long off season in the A League. I mean they
played in May. What are we now mid October? It's
a long time without a game. I think I think
you'll find a Phoenix side that is absolutely ready to go.
For listening, they're flying under the radar because Aukland FC
are getting all the pre preseason headlines. Once we get going,
(09:42):
I think you'll see a Wellington team that's as good
as it was last year.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
How funny you said, we still good on you? Good
on your party. That shows your allegiance, doesn't it? Wed up?
Hopefully we're not getting broadcast to Walkland this afternoon. Would
you go up there tomorrow? Appreciate you party, love you
have a great birthday. Love to the family. Hope they've
got something special plan for you before you go to Walcambe.
Speaker 5 (10:06):
Yeah, I have so so thanks mate.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Thanks Max talk goes, get ready for the news.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Appreciate you both. Uh that was our sports segment. Oh gosh,
how much fun.
