Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk sed B, the Wellington Mornings Friday Sport Kickoff.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Joining us for Friday Sport kick Off this weekend is
Wellington New Zealand's sports host Jason Pineer It's Written Wrong,
and All Sports Breakfast host Adam Cooper.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Good morning guys, Good morning Neck, Good morning Nick. You
don't know us.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
You need notes to know who we are and what
we do is no, don't.
Speaker 5 (00:43):
You when you actually get in the get in the groove.
You just got to go with the groove rather than
try and you know, hot, hot lip it, hot lip it. Oh,
that's a good one for a talkback host to that
hot lip it. Let's talk some sport. Come on, guys.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Australian Open Women's finals finalists already been found. Piney, I
love the number. What's the Latin number? Lady's name, that's
number one. I love her arena, Sebalinca, I love arena.
Kind of a machine.
Speaker 6 (01:07):
Two time defending champion hasn't really looked troubled at all,
if we're honest, throughout the throughout the tournament, they play
three sets. Of course, the women I think she's been
taken to three sets once maybe throughout the entire time,
little to no trouble in the semis. She'll play Medicine
Keys tomorrow. Coops knows more about the tennis than I do,
(01:30):
having spent a week there. But Medicine Key's good player.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
But well she's a good player ten years ago. I mean,
I remember when she was going to be a superstar.
You know, she made a final ten.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
Years she made the US Open final a long time ago.
But I think the best she's done at Australia is
a semi finals quite a few years ago. So she
she's surpassed that, and she's stead of having this resurgence.
We were actually sitting there watching her. We had a few,
you know, just by chance caught a couple of games
of hers, and we were sitting there thinking, well, she's
actually looking really strong, really really promising, you know, not
letting her you know, frustrations get to her. Like you
(02:00):
when you're sort of there thereabouts, you really get a
sense of the players, you know, just mental you know,
drength and just you know, are they letting stuff get
to them?
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Are they not?
Speaker 4 (02:09):
And she just looked like she was so in the
zone and so competent, so actually not overly tool like
you know, Suberlinka is huge. You know, she's a real
physical see her, saw her player as well, So it
was pretty lucky seeing a lot of these these top
names there and you know, brilliant events. She's tall as
you I wasn't standing next to her. I was way
up in the nosebleeders and it couldn't judge that I
was up higher than her in the stadium watching her now, and.
Speaker 5 (02:31):
I follow her on Instagram or something. I think she's
a star.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
She's a real force, I mean, and she is the
two time reigning champion, so it's incredibly tough now for
Madison Keys, despite I think this you know renaissance, she's
had obviously missed most of last year and then she's
she's back now and really being I think, fighting, fighting
her way through to play some really good tennis. And
ten eight was the wind you know, over that she
got over Eager Jontick as well, and shon Tick's again
(02:57):
a really top player, so her to be knocked over
like that was was quite surprising. Especially she had a
match point during that game which Keys overturned. So I
think it's going to be probably a one sided final,
but I think it might be closer than what you know,
some of the matches that Subilenka has had so far
in this tournament.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
Finally, back to you, Dokovich can't be beaten Kenny.
Speaker 6 (03:15):
Well, he's got Alexander Zverev in the semi finals, and
Zverev is the second seed. Joskovic is only the seventh seed.
But the way that Djokovic beat Carlos el Karez in
the quarter.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Finals, I tend to agree Neck.
Speaker 6 (03:27):
I think if if Djokovic gets past Verev, then he's
probably going to have to play Yannick Sinner, who's got
the rank outsider in the semi's twenty first seed Ben
Shelton and the other semi.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
I like Ben Shelton, though I'm not going to give
up on he.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Won't beat Cinner now, I don't think so.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
No, No, he's got a lot of promise, but he's
a bit like al Karaz and that he's still a
little bit too just gets you know. He has some
amazing moments and you watch him and you have look
at these moments of brilliance and you think wow, but
then the next minute he'll just whack it long and
you know, almost a little bit gets carried away and
just some of that mental capacity isn't just quite there
consistently enough.
Speaker 5 (04:00):
So first Andy Roddick, I don't think that bad.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
I think Shelton will be a smaller guy than Roddick,
and I don't think he will, you know, take long
to be at that point where you really trust him
to win a match and be confident that he could
win a match like this. But I think him taking
on on Sinner is going to be terribly tough. But
I was like enough to see Jokovic as well, and
I think he's going to go the whole way, just
just how he looked. He lets the right things motivate
(04:25):
him and sometimes that's, you know, but a niggle from
the crowds. You know, he's at a check at history
in Australia these last few years, but he seems to
use some of that to really fire himself up. And
he seems to really want this as well. I mean,
he saw what winning that Olympic gold medal meant to
him last year. You know, this would be his first
Grand Slam title since then if he had the chance
(04:45):
to play and then the final on Sunday night, which
I think he will and he really wants it. You can.
You can just tell he seems to be coming more
and he still wants another.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
He seems to have started really slowly and keep building
and building and building, which is exactly what you need
for a tournament like this.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
He's getting stronger and stronger.
Speaker 6 (05:02):
I guess, so if you can time it that way,
then great. I think Shokovic Center is the final we
all want to see on Sunday night. I think they'll
be a cracking final, worth staying up till whenever four
because it could go deep.
Speaker 5 (05:17):
Some of us have work on Monday morning, very early
in the morning.
Speaker 6 (05:19):
I don't know why you I don't know why you're
you know, discounting me from that.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
I've got a company.
Speaker 6 (05:24):
But no, no, I feel as though that's the final
that we're headed for. Having said that, Alexander Verev, you know,
I mean, I said to Coops before, I don't even
know what he looks like.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
That's the thing. I know. Djokovic is a guy. We know,
we know Siner, we know check right. He is the
most nondescript top tennis player.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
Have you ever heard him interviewed?
Speaker 3 (05:45):
I don't record a really really nice guy.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
Really do you see any of the interviews spoken? Very
well spoken.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
Gerbi character almost sounds American when he's in.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
He was funny. Anyway, let's move on to the Phoenix.
We can't talk about interviews of tennis players. Phoenix are
and christ Church tomorrow, which means Jason Pines and christ
Jitch tomorrow and the women are in the Central Coast
on Sunday. Heine, we needed that win, didn't we?
Speaker 3 (06:13):
One hundred percent on Monday night against MacArthur.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (06:16):
Absolutely, It's the kind of result that and can be
season turning off the back of a nil ll draw
against Sydney, you know, and keeping a clean shed against
the Sydney's side. It's pretty free scoring. After five losses
and six was important going over to MacArthur. Coming from
a goal down to win that, first of all was
unexpected and secondly, you're right, so important, you know, years
a long time in football. A year ago Wellington Phoenix
(06:38):
in Central Coast were top of the pops, you know,
and charging towards you know, the top two in the
regular season. You know, fast forward twelve months and here
they are battling outside the top six. But starting to
find a semblance of form that might you know, start
to boost them up. I think this is a massive
game for Wellington tomorrow, so you.
Speaker 5 (06:56):
Think that that could be the turning point if we
get if we get a result.
Speaker 6 (06:58):
Of Monday Night, could we could look back at the
end of the season if the Phoenix are in the
top six and look at Monday Night at MacArthur as
the pivot of the season.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
I really believe that.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Yeah, okay coops, Yeah, like Piny, I mean great, they
needed it, They really needed it. It just felt like
things were starting to sort of really out of that
obviously a couple of players parting ways with the club
and the recent set of week or two as well,
So I just feel that, you know, they just needed that.
And long back contain, you'd be interesting to see what
kind of crowd they get down in christ Church as well.
Obviously hasn't been a home base for the Phoenix for
(07:29):
quite some time, and especially with Auckland's inclusion now, Piny,
it's going to be interesting.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (07:33):
I think the pre sales are really good. Yeah, up
over ten thousand pre cells, so that looks good. I
just want to mention the women's side as well. They
would too kneel down against Newcastle the other halftime scored
in the ninety eighth minute, a winner. The Wellington Phoenix
women are looking really good. They're inside their top six.
They've been through some challenging times as well. If they
can just hold their nerve in the last in the
(07:56):
sort of the last ten or eleven games of the season,
I think they're a top six proposition. They've never made
the top six in their previous three seasons. I think
they've got a bit about them, the Wellington Phoenix Women.
So yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing them on Sunday
as well.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Very quickly, I want to talk about the I don't
know about debarkles the right word, but the Richie Muwanga story.
Me and you Piney have got very different views on this.
I believe that we should that the All Blacks after
they hit fifty or seventy five games, they should be
able to play wherever they want to play, and then
there should be an international window where everyone comes back together.
Speaker 5 (08:29):
You disagree with me, tell me why.
Speaker 6 (08:31):
Yeah, I just think the history tells us that the
production line will continue. Look, if you decide to go
overseas and seek your fortune, fill your boots, go for it,
but you know that you are closing the door while
you are away on your all blacks ambitions. That's the rule,
and you can agree with the rule or not. It
is the rule. I agree with the rule because I
think as soon as you open that door, even if
(08:52):
it is to our most experienced players, all those who
have it a trigger point of forty fifty sixty test matches,
whatever it is, you immediately dilute super rugby, and super
Rugby is a competition that needs invigoration, not dilution.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
So for me, I like the rule.
Speaker 6 (09:07):
And I also think that for Scott Robinson to go
chasing after one guy when he's got a number of
perfectly good first five dates back here who he should
be coaching rather than chasing, you know, the unattainable overseas,
I'm not sure that she'snt all about Sott Robinson as
a coach of him.
Speaker 5 (09:22):
Honest, Wow, Pidy, that's killing that. What are your thoughts
on that one.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
I'm surprised that Raser hasn't been able to pull it off,
to be honest, because he's put so much time and
energy into it and it's you know, been the talking point,
you know, behind the All Blacks up and down seas,
and it's been a real surprise. It just looked as
though it was going to happen.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
It was going to happen.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
You know, those two have had you know, long sort
of positive history together as a player coach relationship, and
it just hasn't happened. So let's move on. And I'm
like Piney, we need to keep super rugby as interesting,
as exciting, as relevant as possible. The crowds are only
there when we see our top players play, and Darby's
the TV viewership's only there when we see you know,
the likes of Bowden, Barrett and everyone else on the
(10:00):
TV playing this super rugby. We've got to keep that
relevance because if the only rugby worth watching is All
Blacks ten, that's not much rugby that's getting consumed.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
Can I just finish this by saying, we also need
a first five for the next World Cup. That's going
to be a superstar.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Well it could.
Speaker 6 (10:13):
Well it'll be Richie Morner. He'll come come back in
the middle of next year. Plenty of time. Plenty of time.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
Oh yeah, okay, you got me converted now, Thank you
both Jason Pye, Adam Cooper. Jason obviously we all know
as the superstar of radio and Mornington and he's the
weekend sports host and Adam Cooper is the superstar.
Speaker 5 (10:30):
Of Saturday Mornings.
