Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from news Talk said b Higgs new releases and keeping
tabs on local artists his music time on Wellington Mornings.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
It's that time of the show that I love. I
love my little time with Jim Jamie. Jim's James.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
You can't even remember my name.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
He loves me so much, James, I call you James,
and I was trying to call you by your correct
name because I always call you James. All right, James Irwin.
He comes in and he's now got a beautiful new
studio just next to next door to me. Your studio
as good as.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
My love my studio and your studio is awesome. Is
my first time in here?

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Is it the first time you come in here? Yeah? Yes?
Why have you been a stranger?

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Oh, I've been in Sydney. I went to Sydney last
last week. That's that's a great town.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Great right. It's the changing seasons. At the moment you reckon,
this is weekend, you know, with Coober Duber and everything
that's happening. Is that the end of the summer, At
the end of the summer.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
I reckon, it's the sign off where we've had. We've
had a multitude of gigs, theater, festival, independent artists, disco, DJs, everything,
and it's you know, and I always feel like Cuber
Dooper is, Cuba Dooper is the kind of sign off.
Doesn't mean it's the end of it, but it's kind
of like alright with changing the seasons, and it's you know, well, if.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
You listen, if you if you're on Instagram or any
of those, right, all the rock acts and the road
shows are all saying thanks for the summer period going
into high.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Were going into hibernation. Yeah, yeah, we're all still bickering
over bike lanes and bus time tables and ron cones.
But man, we've had a great summer and so you know,
and I felt really rejuvenated coming back from Sydney and
looking around Wellington and going you know, Sydney's a great town,
but Wellington's a great town. And we got bogged down
last year and all the all the terrible things that
are going and I feel like we're even though we're

(01:55):
getting to the end of summer where we're gonna have
a great winter and Cuba duper do you go to
it now?

Speaker 2 (02:00):
I went last last year I went and I wandered around.
But you know what impressed me the most of you,
the whole thing. Yeah, with a big group of coutera.
Oh my god, they are so good. Yeah, they're so.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Good, and they're in They're in the parade both days.
I'm pretty sure they have all these different parades. So
there's a like there's a Nelson Sam Barratt Sam Bassadors.
I think they're called. I saw them another time. They're fantastic.
The parades at Cuba Doopa are awesome.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
And you know who I really want to see this year.
I want to go and pray tribute to an old
mate of ours. You got it.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
I was going to talk about that. You didn't even
know that Roger Fox Big Band.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
How did you know I was going to go?

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Had to be because he's we were great. We were
both great, you know, official supporters of the Roger Fox
Big Band, you know, signed up members.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Yeah, I've got I've got great memory. So I'm going
to go along, just to look up to the sky
and say, hey, Roger, Roger, we're here.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
We were with you before, we're still with you. Has
banned as you know, they're doing a kind of a
tribute they've done a couple already. I'm pretty sure seven
to eight o'clock Lower Cuba Street. There's so much going on,
you know, a laundry stage. I'm always a big fan
of laundry. I don't know if people remember there was
a there's that old laundret dry Cleaners on the corner

(03:13):
of Cuba Street Abel Smith Street. Problem with the landlord
still empty that building, isn't it five years on?

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Greedy landlords?

Speaker 3 (03:21):
Yeah, greedy landlords. And they always do parties. They did
a great one at the Newtown Festival. They're in the
Wellington Seafood Market car park. I'm pretty sure it is.
And you know, there's some great DJ, some local boys
who have been around with my my sort of age
Steve the Hat TV Disco. They just do banging. They
pick tracks you won't necessarily know, but you'll be bogging

(03:41):
and getting down to. I love the Southern crossbar. They
do that whole Latino thing, the Latino tunes. You know,
like we said, better Karda not Batacoudah. I'm gonna get
better Carda a drumming band.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
I want to join them, Yeah you should. I want to.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
One of my neighbors in Newtown is a member and
just she loves it. Jackie is a I know, she
just out there every Sunday at their practices. They're meant
to be great fun. You can go to you know,
there's all these stuffer venues that are open at cuban Oupa,
so you know, you can go to Valhalla and blow
of some steam with all the black metlers you can.
You can head up to a lot of the art
galleries are open and they've got gigs. I'm really keen on.

(04:18):
I've got a couple here that I'm going to go
and see Anna Coddington Saturday night eight till nine on
the Tiato stage.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Where is the Tiata stage? Because she had to ask
that you now, I've got I know what it is.
I know where it is. It's outside Florida's. Is that
the main stace?

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Yes, outside Florida's.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
That's perfect. And then this I couldn't get in there.
I've got a VIP last year ticket. Last year in
the line was so long stage.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Maybe it's no, I might be wrong. It might be
the one on Dixon and the Wellington Airport stage is
outside Florida's. Both superb stages. I love, Yeah, she's got Hey,
let's have a listen, and we've got Vera Allen after her.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
You've got.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Missuswith Louis Baker singing.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
Backups, great New Zealander. She writes beautiful songs.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
And then earlier in the day Vera Allen. I'll talk
about her in a second. A connectant ye so based
out of Flying Nun Records in Cuba street Vera Allen.
She's the pretty big deal now on the international scene,

(05:32):
but more for our younger audience.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Maybe have hypto music, yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Something so yeah, two great artists there. Now another one
I'm really looking forward to. I got to say though,
actually I was just looking at it. Look at that
Nick I printed out the program. I can't I can't
even read it. And I've got look my jam jars
I'm wearing, Yeah com and I still can't read it.
So I don't know how you you so much. There's
tons of stuff. He's just wandering and pick up, you know,

(06:12):
and you just enjoy yourself. The next band I'm really
keen on is a band called Black Comet. It's a
five piece band fronted by Laws and Cora and so
a lot of people will know the band Cora. They're
a bit in the line of a bit more reggae dub,
a bit more like Catch a Fire, not six sixty,
but they're kind of that era, yeah, and kind of

(06:33):
like Troy Kingey. They say they play heavy, galactic, galactic
funk and groove. They're nine thirty on the Tiarro stage
and they this reminds me of Prince a lot. Let's
have it. Listen to Black Comet's got that funk. Let's
take it off. He's dancing. They've got a bit of

(06:59):
rock in there as well.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Who's that?

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Because it is the same band, Black Comet, So they've
got quite a wide diverse world.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Of course there's some more of them.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
You're coming up game.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Wow, this is yeah, and then it almost comes into
this groovy fund almost electronic there. So I reckon that's
gonna be a great band. Just check out nine point
thirty on what did I say? The Tiara stage year
very prints like at times. Oh, then we get into Sunday.

(07:32):
Now that's a bit of a tune day. I'm gonna
kick off my day by hitting around and eating a
whole lot of lunch, and you know, like there's a
whole lot of stores doing great food. I'm probably gonna
check out the Peter mccleey gallery for Footnote Dance, who
are renowned New Zealand dance company. Then maybe I'm gonna
head to the Zen Zone and my Lulu Lemons do
a bit of yoga. What do you reckon? You want
to join me for some yoga? Neck You've got your Lulu,

(07:54):
You got your Lulu Lemons.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
We can.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
That's where we can chill out from the crowd to
meet you and Ethan. That's gonna be fun. We'll get
on meet you there and then we'll head to the
SOUTHSA lessons from three o'clock in Lower Cuba.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
I'd love to be a dancer. I'd love to do salcer.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
No no, but I tell you one of the woman
in our office, Nicky Stevens. She's a great South dancer
and does all that sort of stuff, So maybe she
could run some classes.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
We've got a big new studio. We could do a
wellness weep would pay to see that.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
That would be awesome. We'd look great in the old
I'd love to and the active we are.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
You and I I've talked about it. My old producer
Jack used to laugh every time I said, I'd love
to learn how to dance.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
You would be a great dancer.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
I just want to know there's no bad It's not
a bad thing, is it.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Yeah? Exactly why have.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
You stop suddenly when I talk about dancing.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Get the camera with the listeners. Would like to see
that on the on the video.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Lovely guy wanting to learn how to dance.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Hey, we've got spiritual jazz finishing off my Sunday before
I head to Graham Nortons. I'm going to that Sunday
night or the previous night. Is Bob guildoff. We should
remember that he's going to turn up. Imagine turning up
in town and you've got Cubanoupa just absolutely heaving. He
would love He's gonna love it.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
I mean love it.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
It's going to be right up as Alie.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
You know I spoke to him the other day, Yes
I did.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
I did. Know You've spoken to him, and I think
that's amazing. I would love to speak to him. I
nearly thought about going to see him in Sydney, but
I went to p J. Harvey at the Opera House
instead of going to see Bob Guildolf across town.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
So so such a banker, with all the places, You've got.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Enough money going on, so much going on? Who do
gurus next week? Are you a who doo guru fan?

Speaker 2 (09:34):
I thought they were okay in the day. I don't think.
I'm not really into seeing stuff. When they I think
they're pasted.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
I had listened this morning, Yeah, I had have listened
this morning, and very midnight oil but b grade midnight oil.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
But still a can I just quickly say one thing, Well,
my guitar gently weeps Prince Live. Have you seen that?

Speaker 3 (09:54):
I have seen that?

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Is that the greatest break ever?

Speaker 3 (09:57):
He just cuts loose cuts, loose.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
Cuts three minutes where you're feeling YouTube, you feel like
your life's a little I've had it. You needed down
and you need to.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Be Anything from Prince but makes me feel.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Rejoiced while my guitar year the weeks.
