Speaker 1 (00:00):
This Day in History Class is a production of I
Heart Radio. Hello again and Welcome to This Day in
History Class, a show that gives a quick look it's
something that happened a long time ago. Today I'm Gabe

(00:21):
Lousier and this episode we're talking about the last great
fight of the greatest of all time, Mohammed Ali. The
day was September at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans,

(00:46):
boxer Mohammed Ali defeated Leon Spinks in a fight for
the heavyweight championship. The victory made Ali the first fighter
in history to win the title three times. This records
setting match was a comeback moment for Ali and would
stand as the last notable fight of his career. Ali

(01:07):
had become a professional boxer eighteen years earlier in nineteen
sixty when he defeated Tunny Hunsacker in a six round bout.
Just four years later, Ali bested Sonny Liston to become
world heavyweight champion for the first time at age twenty two.
Ali continued his winning streak until nineteen sixty seven, when

(01:31):
his career was halted by the Vietnam War. After being
drafted for military service, Ali refused to be inducted into
the Armed Forces. He explained his decision by saying, quote,
my conscience won't let me go shoot my brother or
some darker people, or some poor, hungry people in the
mud for big, powerful America. How can I shoot them

(01:54):
poor people? Just take me to jail. Ali was soon
convicted of draft evasion and was banned from boxing for
three years, and the hits just kept on coming. In
March nineteen seventy one, five months after his return to
the ring, Ali suffered the first professional loss of his career.
Build as the fight of the century. The championship match

(02:17):
pitted Ali against Joe Frasier for fifteen grueling rounds. In
the end, Frasier was declared the winner by unanimous consent,
and Ali lost his heavyweight title for the first time.
On the bright side, in June of that same year,
the U. S. Supreme Court overturned Ali's earlier conviction. He

(02:37):
was no longer the heavyweight champ, but he wasn't considered
a draft dodger either. Unfazed by his loss to Frasier,
Ali quickly worked his way back up through the ranks.
Then in late nineteen seventy four, he won back the
heavyweight title when he defeated George Foreman in the eighth
round of their famous rumble in the Jungle match. If

(02:59):
you're wondering who took the belt from Ali the second time,
the answer is none other than Leon Spins. Seven months
before their fight at the Superdome, Ali and Spins faced
off for the first time at the Heavyweight Championship in
Las Vegas. Spinx was a newcomer to the sport. He
had fought professionally only seven times before going head to

(03:22):
head with Ali. He was considered the clear underdog at
ten to one odds, but on February, Spins beat those
odds and became the second person to take the heavyweight
title from Ali. After this shocking upset, Ali spent the
next seven months training for a rematch. Speaking to reporters

(03:44):
ahead of the fight, he seemed to imply it was
a good thing that he'd lost to a boxer eleven
years younger than him, As he explained, quote, do you
know if I beat him the first time, I wouldn't
have got no credit for it. He only had seven fights.
The kid was nothing, so I'm glad he won. It's
a perfect scene. You couldn't write a better movie than

(04:06):
this competition fighting odds, can the old Champ regain his
title for a third time? Think of it a third
time do or die. When the big day arrived on September,
Ali and Spinks climbed into a ring in front of
more than sixty three thousand spectators, including celebrities like Liza

(04:28):
Minelli and Rocky Balboa himself Sylvester Stallone At home, more
than ninety million people tuned in for the fight. The
entire country was on the edge of its seat, wondering
if the old Champ could pull out one more win.
Ali came prepared and poured everything he had into the fight.
He danced and dodged his way through all fifteen rounds,

(04:51):
dominating the fight and landing some solid punches. When the
final bell rang, a unanimous decision from the judges declared
that Ali thirty six had beaten Spinks. History was made
as Ali reclaimed the heavyweight title for the third and
final time. The next year, Ali tried retiring from boxing,

(05:14):
but it didn't take. His dwindling fortune compelled him back
into the ring for two more pay days, but after
losing both matches, Ali hung up his gloves for good.
At age forty. During his twenty one year career, Ali
tallied fifty six wins, thirty seven of which were knockouts,

(05:35):
and just five losses. Outside the ring, he also found
success as an artist, an entertainer, an activist, and even
a diplomat, but we'll save those stories for another day.
I'm Gabe Louisier and hopefully you now know a little
more about history today than you did yesterday. If you

(05:56):
have any comments or suggestions, you can send them my
way at this day at i heart media dot com.
Thanks to Chandler May's for producing the show, and thank
you as always for listening. I'll see you back here
against tomorrow for another day in History class. For more

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
