Lakey told you to be in touchall right, from the Hill dot Com
and NewsNation. I want to walktheme in Hannah Trudeau, a wonderful political

(01:52):
reporter for the Hill dot Com.She's on the hotline now, Hannah,
welcome to the program. Glad tohave you here. Hi, thanks for
having me, Handa, let's divein here. Yesterday, of course,
a world shattering news of Joe Bidendecides to back out of the presidential race.
He gave an endorsement to Kamala Harris. What do you know what happened?

(02:14):
I mean, he had they hadsurrogance for the Biden Harris campaign out
of the morning shows yesterday saying JoeBiden's in this thing, He's in it
to win it. And then fortyfive minutes to an hour later they pulled
the rug out from under that. Was there something that happened in that forty
five minutes to an hour after themorning shows that they decided to make an
opposite announcement. Well, look,I think this had been brewing for quite

(02:38):
some time. I mean the public, the public messaging around this, as
he kind of indicated, is thathe is staying in the race. He's
not dropping out. You know,The President said himself that he intends to
remain into the race to be theone to beat Trump. That was certainly
what he had hoped. But thedam was breaking day by day, minute
by minute. In some cases,it just couldn't sustain itself. And so

(03:00):
I think within that small window yesterdaywhere we foughting slip, I mean,
there was some reporting later last weekthat indicated that Sunday could be today.
And I think as the public pressurebuilt and built, especially from elected Democrats,
you know, not just that startedin the House, then it trickled
over to the Senate. And thesewere some of these, you know,

(03:20):
were folks that that Biden had eitherworked with for a long time or had
certainly had you know, respected andhad that mutual level of respect. So
I think that you know, thecombination of those things, the public and
the private pressure obviously really just justwith unsustainable past Sunday. It seems interesting
that we you know, again,I know President Biden is sick with the

(03:42):
COVID, but even to walk outto the curb it is a home there
in Delaware and say, hey,I'll talk more later, but here's what's
happening. It came out on awritten paper, we haven't seen or heard
from the former president. Do weknow if there's a plan for him to
address the nation or addressed his supporterspersonally regarding this, And why do you
think it just came out on apiece of paper only yesterday? Yeah,

(04:03):
I think I think, you know, the COVID, like you mentioned,
is probably the official reason, andjust taking that abundance of caution the way
that everybody is used to doing. But I do think that it's it's the
next natural question. I know Republicanshave been already spotlighting that and asking,
you know, why haven't we seenthe president address this directly. Obviously,

(04:25):
those questions will continue until he doesmake his first public appearance. We're not
sure yet when that will be.I think the statement rightfully kind of prompted
some questions about what his next stepswould be. It's it's definitely uncommon.
I mean, this is such anobviously unprecedented moment for so many reasons,
but it strikes it struck a lotof people. I think it's sort of

(04:45):
odd that the paper and that documentwouldn't be followed up with just a quick
appearance, like you said, Sowe're definitely looking looking for that in the
coming days and hours. Hannah Trudeauis guess the Hill dot com as she's
a reporter for them, and gladyou keep me posting on that because I
just found that pecure you're such abig announcement at least through the gate wave
and thumbs up or something. It'sjust kind of bizarre. There. Also,

(05:10):
the piece of paper the statement cameout did not immediately endorse Kamala Harris,
and then the news report said,oh my god, it doesn't endorse
Kamala Harris, and then that cameout on a separate tweet. Is there
something that maybe we're reading into thator should read into that or shouldn't read
into that? Why did the initialpaper not list Kamala Harris as his getting
his endorsement and that had to comeout separately. Yeah, I mean a

(05:33):
lot of this, I think thereporting can be will probably come within a
day or two, just looking atthe finer points of those kinds of things.
But that seems, you know, maybe that was maybe that was a
strategic decision. Maybe not. It'sreally hard to tell because I think,
you know, the case can beargued both ways. It can be said,
you know, he wanted to justin the first tweet announced that he

(05:55):
wasn't running, and then send afollow up tweet of his endorsement. It
kind of makes sense, but itmight be two separate But you know,
like you said, it was anews alert that he didn't immediately endorse her,
and then it came, you know, within a minute or so or
something like that later, So itwas definitely rapid. You know. I
think there's so many questions just aboutthe behind the scenes of this all that

(06:15):
we're learning that we you know, started to learn yesterday and we'll certainly be
learning more today and tomorrow. SoI wouldn't read, you know, personally,
I wouldn't read too much into that. As of right now. It
looked like the frequency and the speedwith which the entire sort of democratic apparatus
endorsed her was pretty swift, youknow, minus a couple of notable names.

(06:36):
But I think that's probably more ofan indication of where things stand at
least right now. Is there somethingthat you're hearing or following up on,
because you mentioned some notable names thatimmediately came out behind Kamala Harris, the
Biden's our own governor Jared Poulos hasYeah, you have the Clintons came out,
but you do notably have some ofthe names that you're hearing pushing Joe

(06:57):
out behind the scenes that came JeffreyNancy Pelosi had been in touch with President
Biden, Chuck Schumer, and eventhe Obama's President Obama has not given their
support behind Kamala Harris. Is theresomething you guys at the Hill are pursuing
and or hearing about why those prominentnames have not given their endorsement to Kamala
Harris. Yeah, I think thoseare That's just kind of the storyline of

(07:20):
the week, at least, youknow, from our vantage point in a
lot of ways, because of coursethere's been tons of reporting that former Speaker
Celosi was sort of instrumental in helpingusher Biden out and where you know her
her guidance in that regard is oneof the main reasons why he's he decided

(07:41):
to step down, and so Ithink people are certainly looking at what her
what her role is next if shedoes offer that endorsement, obviously both from
from California, Celosi and Harris, and then you know, Obama is an
interesting kind of choice in that regardbecause he's obviously no longer in the public
spotlight necessarily the way that Pelosi is. But at the same time, I

(08:05):
think a lot of folks in Democraticcircles, at least that I've been seeing
so far, had expected that endorsementof her to come instantly. So the
fact that it hasn't and we franklydon't even know if it will. You
know, he as recently as yesterdaywas calling for sort of an open primary,
which he kind of stands alone, you know as of right now.
He's definitely definitely the minority of Democratswho would want that. But the fact

(08:28):
that you know, the former Democraticpresident says he's open to that is is
notable. I think it's going tobe maybe a pressure campaign to see if
he changes that sentiment. Certainly withPelosi, Hakeem Jeffries, they haven't called
for that, but they, likeyou noted, haven't endorsed Harris either yet.
So that's you know, this isthese are the storylines of the next

(08:50):
couple of days, for sure.Hannah Trudeau the Hill dot Com. I
will keep an eye on the Hilland we'll be back in touch. I
appreciate you hopping on him out oftime here. Hannah Trudeau, The Hill
dot Com political reporter for The Hilland News Nation. Those are the storylines.
I'm asking the questions, and I'mnot wrong to ask them because that's
what they're looking for and try totrack down at the Hill dot Com and

(09:13):
all the reporters up in Washington,d C. All right, there's the
music. I gotta go. Everybody, stand by Lakey on the radio.
You're in front of the speakers theway the Good Lord intended it. Jimmy
