Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Backspin the Golf Show, presented by ac Gen
Southern Dudes, one of the top five courses you can
play in Arizona, streaming, live on demand and wherever you
get your podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Back's Been the Golf Show, hopefully live on Fox Sports
nine to ten Phoenix. It's Mike Bauer, It's Brady Wilson,
It's Andrew Long, the Long Guy, the general manager of
Auction Southern Dunes. Maybe some golf JABBRONI are Champion of Golf.
Cordy Matheson, she's busy all month long, so she's not
with us this week, but been in the next couple
weeks while ever triumphantly back. We'll be broadcasting a couple
(00:38):
of weeks from today from the Ford Championship at Wildhorse Pass,
So go'll be out with us live on location for
that one. And guys, I mean, right off the bat,
do you guys want to talk to the players right
now or should we look back at I mean OC
Shay one. We had another collapse at Arney's place. Do
you guys want to talk about this week? You want
to take a quick look back to last week?
Speaker 3 (00:59):
We lready we want to talk about the man hunt
that was outside of Jacksonville this morning. There was Scottish
Scheffler looking for a guy named Fairway. I was gonna say,
if there was a man hunter they trying to get
arrested again.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
What what what happened at at the players this morning
that it resulted in a manhunt? Brady, Oh my goodness.
These are the These are the headlines that you don't
prepare for, you know, you know, we come in, we're thinking, hey,
we're gonna be talking about, you know, Ludwig as top
the leader board, Xander Havin arguably the round of the day,
(01:37):
even though he was two strikes two strokes back of
Ludwig shooting a sixty five yesterday Lude Luda as or
Loudy as Bill Huffman loves to call him, firing a
sixty three Cam Young Cory Connor's Justin Thomas right in
the hunt. Scotty Scheffler, Rory McElroy barely making the weekend.
But there was a man hunt this morning in Bonavitra.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
So you know, not not to make light of a
of a tough situation.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Put on put on your news. Guy had here in
sports like what we got.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Doing the news doing the news anyway, gentleman last night
shot two people.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
At a doesn't sound like a gentleman to me.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Okay, well just saying I'm not gonna say his name,
because why would we do that. But in the parking
lot of a Walgreens last time about ten thirty pm,
he escaped and there was legitimately a manhunt for him
until he was captured this morning at eight am, uh
and so that delayed. It was really close to the
entrance to TPC Sagress, so they had to delay fans
(02:37):
and volunteers and everyone getting intil till the suspect was apprehended.
So that that's the true part of the story. I
think Scotty was in a man hunt for his driver
because if you saw the way he was hitting it yesterday,
like what is going on? We're not going to go
to deaf Con two. That was a Cuban missile crisis, right.
(02:58):
Deaf Con three's kind of in the middle there. Maybe
it's deep Con four because I mean, he's still Scotty,
and he's still made the cut and leaning the tour
and cuts made in a row and has wins this
year and seems to play really good every day except
Thursday and he's three hunder on his round today. So
it's Scotty. He's still very, very very good. He's still
(03:18):
the best player in the world. But something's off.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
Something's going on.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
There's there's he's not gonna make my top five bet again. Yeah,
something's not not right. So and I don't know, maybe
he's maybe he's got an injury, maybe he's a little tweaked.
I maybe he needs to get on the range and
hit some balls. I don't know what's going on there,
but uh, well.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
I saw a video of him, you know, smashing some
balls out on the range in the rain, right. I
mean he's clearly going through something. He's trying to figure
it out, whether it be an injury or maybe. You know,
there was a there was a wild shot he had
and I watched it and I was like, that's not Scotty.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Yeah, And finish was all over the map. I mean,
you know the remember during augusta week our guy in Memphis,
the radio host, you know, feed everywhere, but the ball
goes straight. Well, the bawling going straight, and feed you're
still everywhere. Now the club's everywhere, So looks a little
bit like an unfolded long trae out there. But the
(04:22):
ten Cup reference to our boys down at two back. Anyway,
the in a transition segue, we do have Luvig out
and you know he he kind of came on strong
last week at five under on the final round at
bay Hill, finished strong, finished T three and has carried
that over into the players this week. And you know,
(04:43):
at one point they were talking about course record yesterday
the way he was was playing, and I.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Mean he was one struck off course record sixty two.
He fired a sixty three.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
I think he chipped in twice one time standing in
a bunker.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
Yea eagles at hole on whole two and nine.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Yeah, but apparently having a lead go going into the
weekends not good in the PGA Tour because we've seen
it before. It back to back, Yeah, you know Bridgman,
you know it's like almost yeah. I mean everybody seems
to be coming back to the field, you know. So anyway, yeah,
(05:19):
last week you finished with with uh and then you
have the whole actually cheating scandal. Okay, is he cheating?
Is not cheating? Is he putting the handle against his
chest or is it just touching his shirt? I mean
we're talking micro meters. I don't know how you gauge
that games. The golf is a game of honor. I mean,
we have this whole thing with longer come up on
(05:39):
the Champions Tour. Champions Tours coming into Tucson here next weekend,
so you know, let's bring old let's bring some longer
talk into it. I mean, it's this seems to come
up with the with the long broom putters, Like guys
have to put their thumb on top and then they
touched their shirt and you're allowed to touch your shirt,
(06:00):
but you're not allowed touch sternam I My shirt's on
my sternum. I don't know, like what's the difference, you know,
you know, and it just seems like there's there's something,
you know, where there's smoke, there's fire. I bet I
faded and my pre tournament picks because quite frankly, I
just think it's a lot of distraction and a lot
(06:20):
of discussion. Yeah, so you know, we'll see, we'll see
how it how that shakes out. I I'll know, we'll
see what That's a conversation for another day, probably for
the summer, when we're talking to John Dear Classic to
get into the rules.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Well, briefly, I mean, I I do want to say, yeah,
when when when? When? When the rocket mortgage is going
on right as it still exists this.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Year In the JV plan b uh tournament list that
rollap rolled out this week segue back to State of
the Union to your.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Consociation, Jordan Speth was asked about this specifically about the
broomstick putter and and and he said, hey, look there,
and I quote, there's a skill to it. If it
were that easy to do, and it made everyone that
much better, every buddy would do. I think he's got
a point. But also at the same time, like, how
can you tell if it's actually anchored or if it's
just your loose shirt is kind of hanging there? Like
(07:08):
there's there is as you said, and not even Miller
mean there's micrometers. I mean the objective, if you're actualy
is get it as close to your sternham as you
possibly can. And maybe every once in a while.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
The only way that that works is if you anchor.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Well, and I'm gonna tell I'm gonna just be transparent
about it. I do not put with a with a
broomstick putter. I put with a traditional thirty three and
a half inch putter, but I've messed around with it.
We have him in the shop. I you know, I
think every player at one points like, let me just
try this. Here's the thing. If you start with it unanchored,
(07:43):
and you know that in your heart right it's not
touching your sterm, what's to say it doesn't move there
during the stroke. A putting stroke is about a second
from the time you start the putter back to the
time you follow through. It's about a second. That's about
how long it takes to do a put in those
in those microseconds, you know, what's to say your thumb
(08:08):
doesn't move and touch your shirt? That a penalty? Then,
I mean, like it really is just too for a
game that has so many rules, and it's just too ambiguous.
That rule is so ambiguous. I mean, I think you
either let people anchor and just let them do it,
or you outlaw the putter, you know what I mean,
Like you can't be like, oh, well you can have
(08:29):
a long putter, but you can't anchor it, but it
can touch your shirt. But yeah, I mean, and I
know golf's a game of honor, but there's too much money,
you know, Like golf's a game of honor. But let
me tell you about how the local scramble works. When
you know, when when you're playing for a pickle dish,
everyone's like, wow, okay, we'll be honorable. When you start
playing for big money in a scramble, you got to
(08:51):
put another team out there with them, and you got
to play in and nates them or you got playing
six them's Because why when when the prize is too much,
people's ethics go down. I'm not accusing Okhay of cheating.
I'm not accusing Bernhan Longer of cheating. I'm just saying,
if you choose to putt with a long putter, you're
gonna you're gonna get that heat at some point because
it's just too you know, Amscott's dealt with it, but
(09:14):
he really makes a conscious effort to get it a
little further from his body, probably more so than those
two other guys that we mentioned. But I mean, it's
just it's a tough it's a tough it's a tough look.
But you know, Akha played exceptionally well. Gotta win at
bay Hill. Berger joins the Lowry fan Club.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Yeah, my goodness, two weeks in a row.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Two weeks in a row. We need maybe we need
to run back our music from last week. I think
he's cracking up, you know.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Actua. By the way, September twenty twenty three is when
he went to the long putter, so just a few
years ago, just three years ago. I mean, obviously, you
know he's a young man, right, so young in his career.
But it's not like he's been using a broomstick putter
since he was the height of a broomstick putter one
hundred and eighty third on the PGA Tour for strokes
gain putting at that point in time. He's now thirty
third in twenty twenty four, thirty fifth and twenty twenty five.
(10:05):
Putting a huge part of why he won at bay Hill.
So if you look at it, I mean, this is
a guy that made a huge jump, whether that's his focus,
that's a skill, whether he's illegally anchoring and he's cheating,
But the numbers don't lie in terms of him improving
as a player. A guy that's you know, one hundred
and eighty third to the mid to upper thirties in
(10:27):
terms of strokes gained putting, it obviously makes a difference
and and and for a lot of us, you go
back and Tiger Woods was vehemently against the long putter.
I mean, Tiger Woods for years, you know, said that,
you know, and you know, and I paraphrase, but hey,
I'm a traditionalist. It's about the pendulum of the putter,
like that's that's the way that the game should be played.
(10:48):
And now there's a lot of people that just take
what Tiger says as gospel. So there's probably a lot
of people that just Tiger didn't like it me too, well, yeah,
and he's like, I resemble.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
That, right, you know, the whole like long putter, midputter,
mid length putter, counterbalance putters. Now that the next thing
is kind of what Lab has done with you know,
the center of gravity stuff. I mean, and now everyone's
following suit with that. I you know, I would say,
you know, every other club in the bag has some
level of standardization to it, right, like length. D Chambeau
(11:24):
does the stay in length irons, but you know, a
driver can't be this long. You can shorten it up.
I don't know. The putter has the greatest variants, and
it's probably to keep people in the game that get
yips or get a physical ailment that has them shake
it hard to hold the traditional putter that way. I mean,
I you know, but there's probably there's probably a world
(11:45):
where for professional golf they need to tighten it up.
I agree, yeah, I mean I think we're going to
buy for Kate the ball here pretty soon. Oh yeah, yeah,
that's going to open the door. I think to tour
rules versus you know, common play rules, and this would
be one I think would be on the agenda after
the ball gets bifurcated. I don't know, Andrew thoughts no.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
I I just think, you know, if you're going to
have a game where there are so many rules and
we have cameras everywhere, thousands, millions of eyes on players
and we're all seeing the same thing, right, at some point,
I think the toy goes Okay, we got to get
rid of this, everybody. There's a there's a very select
(12:30):
few players who use those long petters, and but before
they did, they were using you know, the regular size,
right regular length petters that you know you or I use.
I mean look at VJ.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Singh.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
He was he was a long putter guy for a
long time. Now he's gone back, he's gone back and forth.
He tinkers with his stuff.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
But and I say, everyone questions that guything, right, and
what's it's not fair to auction either a little bit.
I mean, the guy played very well and one want
an event in a play off, and.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
Well he made one thousand feet worth of putts in Sunday.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
And you know, like with that putter, you know, and
and what you're saying, but the conversation isn't about him
when in the API, the conversation becomes about whether he
was cheating or not and on the whole. And then
you know, and then yeah, like Bower just said, you know,
the research of when did he go to the putter and.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
He's he's twelve this year this season in strokes gain putting,
so moving into the thirties the last couple of years
in the one eighties before that. Michael Kim, who had
a pretty good finish here in Phoenix tied for eighteenth.
Is is a very active social media guy. And Michael Kim,
you know, said about this specifically, he goes, uh, it's
(13:42):
funny to me that actually anchoring is a thing. He
puts us out on Twitter. Michael Kim, the PGA pro
in person it's not that close. This is not a
concern amongst the players. That's something that he said, is
he often, you know, during events, you know, puts out
his thoughts and observations something like that.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
This teammates okay from TG Yeah exactly. Yeah, Michael Kim
hol on one guy.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Yeah, it's Tom Kim. You're getting the Kims confused. That's
Tom Kim, Tom Kim. Hole in one. You had the
Justin Rose albatross. Somebody else had a hole in one
too at tg O this year.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
Yeah, yeah, first one. Yeah, the first one practice.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
But nonetheless, congratulations to a shave Battia forgetting the win
at Bay Hill. Daniel Berger collapsing again. Uh, not not
for him, but a couple of weeks in a row
now with Shane Lowry and now Daniel Berger and all
eyes are off to the fifth major right March is Major,
the Players Championship going on. Ludwig atop the leader board,
(14:40):
Xander looking like that Xander that won a couple of
majors just a couple of years ago. Cam Young is
solo third right now, Cordy Connors, Justin Thomas, Justin Thomas
goes seventy nine, seventy nine DFL misses the weekend at
Bay Hill and goes sixty eight to sixty eight. This week,
we'll talk about that with Rex Hagrid in about ten
(15:02):
minutes and more on Batsman The Golf Show this week.
Speaker 5 (15:06):
It vans golf shops by Worldwide Golf. It's the Tailor
Made Fitting and Goad.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
You sold that team.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
A mixed berry pie is my favorite pie. I love
a good mixed berry.
Speaker 3 (15:25):
Or pepperoni and sausage.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Oh okay, now now you're talking about Yeah I do,
I mean, I like, I mean, I'm a Chicago guy.
So essentially we have Castle roll as deep Dish and
uh yeah. So Happy Pie Day three fourteen. It was
three eleven day earlier. If you're a fan of the
band at three fourteen. Today, yesterday was Friday the thirteenth.
For the second month in a row, we had a
(15:48):
Friday the thirteenth, So but happy Pi Day to everybody. Nonetheless,
lots to talk about in the world of golf. And
you know, on top of the players, you also have
live going on, and you have you have Rice into
Shamba falling into bunkers. You have John Ram who won
last week as well. Congratulations to him winning as they're
they're wrapping up their their Pacific swing live Hong Kong
(16:12):
last week, John Rom getting to win and uh and
you know, and now you look at what what is
it ten o'clock tonight or whatever it is to watch
live again?
Speaker 3 (16:22):
Yeah, uh, I mean must watch TV tonight. You got joking.
Neman Lee Westwood tied for first, Richard Lee who's a
wild card in there, he's unattached to a team, and
then Bryson and John Rahm around out the leaderboard. So
and DJ Dustin Johnson, Terrell Hatten, Mark Leishman, you know,
big names on their board. And in a week where
(16:44):
the tour that the golf course is part of the
conversation is part of the star at the players with
the seventeenth hole and TPC Sagrass. This golf course in
Singapore looks awesome. It's it looks tough, awesome, it's immaculate
in conditions like if you're just like a fan of
(17:05):
like cool golf course architecture. Turn on Live tonight. Holy cow,
they're playing you know, I mean it is. It is.
I dare I say a gusta like conditions, I mean
they are. It is very very good and TBC. With
the rain this week and the long rough haven't been
able to mow the rough. Lud dig got a got
(17:27):
a relief drop yesterday for a ball that was embedded
in the face of a bunker with six inch rough.
I'm still not sure how that works, but exactly, you know,
good for him, use the rules to your advantage, and
that probably saved him at least one stroke because I
don't know how he's getting out of there. That looks
like it falls back in the bunker if you have
(17:48):
to play it as it lies. So uh but yeah, no,
Live is uh gonna be must watch TV to night
primetime television.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
Yeah it is.
Speaker 6 (17:57):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Let's see it is on Fox Sports one at about
six o'clock our time. About six o'clock our time on
Fox Sports one. The Live Golf Singapore is going underway.
As you mentioned, I mean joking. Nima is a guy
who won five times last year on Live, a guy
who is not as of yet because you know the
Masters does make their own rules, but not as of
(18:17):
right now playing in the Masters. But brace into shambou.
John Rahm, you had you had Rom winning last week
his first win in a long time on Live. I
mean his teams won a whole bunch and great for
Legion and you know and all that, but it's the
first individual win for John Ram in a while. Nonetheless,
there is there's lots to talk about at the Players
(18:38):
as well. Look forward to heading out to pon Avidra,
heading out to the fifth Championship. If you want to
call it, we'll talk some Brian Rolap. We're definitely gonna
talk some Ludwig, some Xander and assuredly Scotty and Rory
with Rex Hoggard, he joins us next the best golf

You're wearing a burnt orange Southern Dunes hat.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
So yeah, thank you, Thank you, Brady. The best of
both worlds.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
Yeah, you know it's I I like to think that
Brady especially ordered these for me, but you know they
go with the desert vibes. So but I'm gonna stick
with you just ordered it for me.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
Yes, So.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
Maybe this is just me being add but I'm looking
at you. I'm looking at the Southern Dunes lid. I'm
looking at the general manager of auction Southern Dunes and
I will now hold up my phone. Great for radio.
I had a text from a buddy this morning who's playing,
and he sends me a picture of the range at
Auction Southern Dunes and says, and I'm going to get
an answer for him right now, live on the radio.
I already I'll tell you in a second how I answer.
(21:25):
But he goes ask Brady why there are field goal
posts on the range?
Speaker 3 (21:29):
Is like, what, Yeah, I can give you the answer.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Yeah yeah, if you want to know, I'll give you
my answer after we get the real answers.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
Multiple answers. Okay, okay, So.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Auction Southern Dunes, fantastic cours. You run it down there,
and so Copa. You guys have goalposts like actual ncuble
A goalposts in the middle of the driving room.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
The boys from the from the grounds crew at Arizona
State helped me order it. So it's legit. It's not
just you know, three pipes weld together. It's a legitimate
goal post. Had it shipped out in the same company
that supplies them for Sun Devil Stadium.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
Okay, wait, it is it the one that breaks away?
As soon as the.
Speaker 3 (22:07):
No, no, you cann't do the breakaway ones. It's good
because the ones that wrote rush the field no one's
rushing the driving range hopefully. Uh there's there's a couple
of reasons why we put it in number one. Option
Answer one, you know, answer number A A is well,
(22:27):
it's cool, it is. Yeah, it's super cool.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
Yeah. I don't actually need to hear any more options
after that. You're good. I'm approving that in your budget
right now, go for it.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
Option two is we've positioned it in the middle of
the fairway from the back of the practice t It's
about one hundred and eighty yards, so you know, six iron,
maybe a nine iron for Andrew. You know you're sitting
there and you know goal post. I don't know the
w borwer you'll look it up. I think it's like
fifteen feet wide. I don't know exactly how far it is,
(23:00):
but what a great target to hit balls at. Right.
You can aim at the left post, if you're really
trying to deal it in, you aim at the right post.
You can hit draws into it, you can hit cuts
into it, and who does and that works on your accuracy. Right,
So it's a great it's a great golf target. Uh.
So that's that's B and then C or Roman numeral
(23:23):
three three eyes the reason why we do it is
because on the floor of the practice facility of the
driving range at Southern Dudes is our short course hashtag
Mini Dudentes. We have six target greens out there and
we lit it last year so you can come out
and play at night. You know, we're we're the second
golf op night golf option in Phoenix behind to play
(23:45):
and actually put out and that's that. You know, Grass
Cuppings has has their facility and then us and those
target greens are target They're real putting greens that you
put on at night in on mini dunes, but their
target greens during the day. And obviously if those are
the only targets out there, they're going to get a
little bit beat up with ballmarks, and we do repair
(24:06):
them and top dress them and we give those dreams
regular maintenance. However, you know, giving you a target in
the middle of the floor of the range gives you
something else to aim at, and so that's less ballmarks.
And because mini dunes under the lights and it's becoming
more and more popular to play night golf, you know,
those six holes, it's better better for them that they
(24:29):
have less ballmarks on. So, but we didn't want to
take the flags out. We wanted to give you an
additional target.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
So the goalposts in American football are eighteen feet six inches.
High school a little bit wider and generally shaped like
an age.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
Actually nowadays good this is high school at.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
Our grounds. Crews had you asked installed it six feet
down with concrete and it's it's out there, and I
guess option like four B C D E F iv
I E IV is uh. You know our theme out
there everything's red. At Southern Dudes, our flags are red.
Everything's red. Our theme on Mini Dunes is yellow, and
(25:12):
so the goal post, the flags are yellow. Yeah, the
tea markers are yellow.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
Huh.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
And now the goal post is yellow. So there you go.
Everything's on brand. You know. It was so fun.
Speaker 4 (25:22):
You know, my brother and I went down there and
we were playing and it was so fun to not
only just hit balls through, but trying to hit the crossbar.
Yeah that's my That was like, I'm gonna nail it. Yeah,
never did, but you know they were just when if golf.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
Ball hits it, you can literally hear it through the
whole golf course because is really cool. So you'll be
out You'll be out playing the golf course. You'd be
out on seven and you'll hear thing and you're like, oh,
someone hit it. Someone just hit the golf post.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
Somebody just somebody just doinked. That's not good if you're
a kicker. It's a lot of fun if you're out
there at the course. But yeah, So my response to
my buddy who said, ask Brady why there are field
goal posts on the range? My response, and to quote myself,
I guess I don't have to say to quote, but
I said, because he bought them and had them installed
months ago. Because that's cool. Yes, that's pretty much it.
(26:09):
You're like, hey, let's get some goalposts up there. Nevertheless,
speaking of goalposts, I mean you talk about guys aiming
pretty well, Ludwig Oberg and Xander Schoffley. You know, I mean,
perfect on the fairways, you know, in regulation is pretty
good thing to aim for. Those are your leaders atop
the leader board at the players Ludwig twelve under. He
(26:30):
te's off at eleven thirty five our time along with Xander.
That's a tremendous pairing atop the leader board. Ludwig is
twelve under, Xander is ten under. If Cam Young all
by himself in third at nine under Cory Connors and
Justin Thomas. Guys, I want to talk a little bit
more about Team shrewan member Justin Thomas had eight under
with Cordy Connors. Apologies to Cordy Connors, but this is
a guy, Justin Thomas, who just I think it was
(26:52):
three months ago yesterday had I'm not a doctor, but
I believe it's a bacchiotomy, but he had. He had
back surge, a diskectomy just a few months ago, comes back.
His return to competitive play was at Arnie's Place last
week at Bay Hill. He goes seventy nine to seventy
nine DFL and now he's tied for fourth. And honestly, guys,
(27:14):
I don't want to say he's got some pep in
a step or swag or anything like that, but Justin
Thomas looks like he's not.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
He looks like Justin Thomas. Yeah he's back.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
Yeah, Yeah, I mean, I don't want to say he's back,
and this is the guy that won the beat, but
Justin Thomas looks like that Justin Thomas that that people
fall into love with over the years.
Speaker 4 (27:32):
Yeah, absolutely, you know, it's you know, it's got to
be refreshing for him mentally to come back and not
only to play at TPC sawgrass and playing at the
level that he's playing, but you know, just after the
week ago, you're, like you said, DFL, You're like, Okay,
what's going on here? And I'm I'm JT. I've I
(27:56):
know how to win? What's going on now? He's I
feel like he's Okay, I'm back, I'm playing good, I'm
back to my old self. I'm I'm gonna say he's
back to one hundred percent. But you know, it's got
to be kind of hard to think about, Okay, how
do I how do I uh, you know, catch the
leaders when these guys are hitting every fairway. You know,
(28:19):
Ludvig is, you know, gaining gained the most strokes from
tee to green. So he's got some work to do,
but it's awesome to see him.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
We're definitely gonna talk some JT with our next guest,
Rex Hoggard. Take a quick break, come on back on
the other side. We're going to head out to Pontavidra
the players and Rex Hogger joins us.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
Next watching subscribe on YouTube. More back spinning moments this week.

Have the Golf Writers Association of America. Golf Channel Senior
writer and host of the Golf Channel podcast, It's time
to go inside the Ropes Love with Rex Hoggart on
Backspin the Golf Show.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
Tremendous golf being played at the Players and it is
our pleasure to catch up with our good friend Rex
Hoggrid the best golf reporter on the planet. Rex, It's
the Batsman Boys vour. We got Andrew, we got Brady Wilson,
general manager of Auction Southern Dudes. And I want to
start things off Rex by thanking you. I just want
to thank you on behalf of us here at Backspin
on behalf of all of the golf fans listening on.
(29:36):
Behalf of human beings. Thank you for your discussion and
allowing Gary Woodland to open up about his PTSD diagnosis,
A tremendous piece that I'm sure you know was received
very well across all walks of life earlier this week,
so on behalf of all of us and everyone. Thank you, Rex.
Speaker 7 (29:59):
I appreci that's very kind of you to say. I
think anyone who has watched it, I mean, I think
carry was amazing and the courage that he showed. I
mean to give you a little bit of insight. I
didn't know what we were going to talk about when
we sat down. I had an indication that he was
struggling a little bit with his healthy ever since he
had brain surgery. I think off the record he would
tell you that he was still having some issues, that
(30:19):
everything wasn't going perfectly. But I had no idea that
the PHSD had been so profound and that it was
impacting him so much. And I have to be honest
with you. You do this professionally. I have nothing but respect
for you. I'm not a very emotional person. My wife
says I'm dead inside that I lack empathy and has
he got through the first answer, I could feel it
welling up inside of me, and I was thinking, I'm
(30:41):
gonna bomb. I can feel it like I'm not going
to make it through this interview. But I did, and
I'm glad I did because I think the message that
he sent out. I walked a couple of holes with
him earlier this week, and the reaction from the crowd
has been absolutely phenomenal, and I think that's kind of
what he was trying to get to. I think he
was trying to come to peace with what he called,
quote unquote living a line that everyone seemed to think
(31:02):
that everything was perfect and it really wasn't.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
I mean he was talking about, you know, going into
restrooms and crying through hours and hours of the day.
Not to distract from Gary Woodland, but I also want
to ask you this Rex yourself personally. You just referenced
fans kind of embracing him in that moment, and he's
long been a fan favorite on the tour. We know
him well here as a member of Team Truon with
(31:24):
our relationship on Backspin and the trun family, and obviously
the moment here at sixteen with Amy bokerstat the I
got this moment, Gary will forever be tied to that
as well. But I mean this is a guy that
for many, many years people have said this is one
of the most likable, wonderful human beings on the PGA tour.
And now all of those people that thought that have
(31:48):
seen a new side of somebody that they already kind
of felt connected to. And I'm sure you've experienced that.
You've probably heard from people who said, wow, I even
have a deeper connection with Gary Woodland or learned something
about myself just by watching that cell reception at the
(32:13):
players not that great, I guess, or or maybe that's us.
We're having a great day here technically at at the
old radio Ranch. So we'll see if we can reconnect
with Rex. Well, while we're trying to reconnect with Rex,
I mean scared them away about feelings, I.
Speaker 3 (32:27):
Think there's another you know context there. Not going to
ask Rex about it too much, but you know, Rex
is a Rex, you know, thank you for your service.
Rex is a former marine. And you know, I think
when people think of PTS, they think of you know,
you know, military, right, and I think what part of it, I.
Speaker 2 (32:46):
Mean, it was shell shock, it was There's there's a
lot of different.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
Words for them, so there's there's a connection to that.
You know, I think we all have you know, appreciation
for our for our troops and our military personnel and
what they go through or first response. And I think
it was you know, Gary is is sponsored by the
Folds of Honor team, and he talked openly about reaching
(33:10):
out to you know, military personnel that have have worked
with PTS and and worked through it, and that's the commonality.
You know, those specific words I think are really profound
that Rex used is that you know, you know, the
commonality with people that are working through PTS is that
(33:32):
they do feel like they're living a lot they can't
really talk about it. And so Rex, I guess you're
back with us. I mean, and I was trying to
make a connection to them to military personnel dealing with
PTS and Gary and your connection with the military, it
was Is that part of what was emotional for.
Speaker 7 (33:48):
You a little bit?
Speaker 8 (33:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (33:51):
I mean we talked about it with rich Lerner that
night on live film. And in my time in the Marines,
I didn't experienced it, but I had friends that experience
combat that did come home and suffered with PTSD. So
I haint an idea of how it impacts you and
how The one part that I kept coming back to
is there's no way to cure it. You're always going
to have those memories. You can certainly treat it, and
I think that's what Gary was trying to do to
(34:12):
a certain degree by coming out and admitting that he
has an issue. But yeah, I think that was part
of it. And Gary, as you guys pointed out, he's
part of Team Truon. He's also very close with Folds
of Honor and I am as well, and Lieutenant Colonel
Dan Rooney, who founded the Folds of Honor It spent
a lot of time talking with Gerry about this. Lieutenant
Colonel Rooney was an F sixteen pilot. He's threw multiple
(34:32):
tours of duty and he has dealt with his share.
He's recommended to get a service to animal and the
dog's being trained right now as we speak. Gary told
me he can't wait to start traveling with it. So
there are ways to make this better, but it is difficult.
And to your point before I got cut off, I
wouldn't wish this on anyone. I mean, it's awful. Some
of the you know what we heard from Geary earlier
(34:53):
this week, but it's certainly not him. I mean, he
is one of the most genuine and likable and nicest
people on the PGA tour.
Speaker 2 (34:58):
I mean, he's definitely one of the fans favorites. Unfortunately
he did not make the weekend there in Pandovitre Beach.
As you are covering the players at the top of
the leaderboard, as we make a rough transition from the
incredible piece earlier this week, and again kudos and thank
you Rex for that in Golf Channel. It was incredibly
well received across you know, I saw so many different
writers and you know, in broadcasters complimenting that bit. But
(35:22):
let's also talk about the leaderboard there at the players,
and we'll start actually from the bottom a little bit
with the top players on the planet, Rory McElroy and
Scotti Scheffler. Not great showings for those guys, barely made
the cut. But Scotty's looking good today, four under already
on the day because you know, it's not Thursday, it's
not Thursday exactly.
Speaker 7 (35:42):
Somehow the Thursday blues caught up with him again. That
was the fifth consecutive Thursday PGA tour around. They shot
seventy are over and there is no easy explanation. I
don't think there's any explanation. It's just golf. Like. You
can't tell me that the world number one wakes up
on Thursday morning and just decide the violence. I mean,
I just don't by that. So I just think he's
still in some sort of transition, I will say. And
(36:02):
I'm not a sling person, I don't pretend to be
one on TV. I think Brandall Stambley did it brilliant
job of breaking down the difference is specifically the driver's
swing of Scotty what it is right now versus what
it was about this point last year. And according to Brandle, again,
I'm not a sling guy, but it's about a flich shorter.
You can see the club face is a little bit
more open. He seems to be a little bit more
across the line. It is pretty dramatically different for someone
(36:24):
who is so building seen as someone wants to make
sure that he does the exact same thing every single time.
Not all that being said, I actually get a speaking
engagement this morning, and my point was he could come
out this morning and shoot sixty three on this golf
course and I wouldn't be surprised because we've seen it
where he struggles on Thursday and then just turns back
into Scotti Scheffler the rest of the week. It seems
(36:46):
like that's the case today. He's certainly driving the ball better,
he's making a couple of more putts. We can't be
surprised by that, but it is a little surprising when
you look at Scotti Scheffler, what the expectations are, which
are not for him to open every single Thursday round
with a round over seventy, and what reality is sometimes.
Speaker 3 (37:04):
With golf Rex transitioning into that here for Saturday, you know,
this is one of those events where the courses is
part of the story because of the uniqueness of the
seventeenth toll, the finishing stretch sixteen seventeen eighteen, plus just
all the water and all the different shots, the big
tree that you have to hit it under. Is the
(37:26):
set up a little you know, tour releases whole locations
on the night before or so, you know, looking at
whole locations, but it seems like early on today here
on Saturday, is the golf course playing a little easier?
Is it? Set up? Is a set up a little
bit more for moving day on Saturday today, you think
because scores are low, golf course maybe firming up a
(37:48):
little bit out of out coming out of the rain.
What's your thoughts on course set up today?
Speaker 7 (37:53):
I mean they're overall of the They wanted to try
to set the golf course up harder, so we didn't
don't seem really be heading in that action, certainly when
you see a sixty three, Although I would argue with
anyone to go look at that round that Luvig Oldberg
shot yesterday and tell me that you've seen a better round,
at least from a ball striking point of view. I've
never seen someone where they were looking every single time
not named scottis Scheffler. So it was a wildly impressive
(38:16):
round out of Louvig. But yeah, they topped the rough
off I believe, on Tuesday at four inches and they
weren't going to touch it again. So you figure by
the time we get to Sunday, it's going to be
a juicy four and a half maybe five inches. I
think they did lose some fire in the greens because
of that storm that came to on Thursday. I think
a lot of players talked about how quickly the golf
course turned around. They haven't really seemed to take a
(38:38):
lot of water out. They have subair here. They probably
could have, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
The Greens still need to still seem to be receptive.
I will. It's more because the mo here is they
let you kind of have a little bit of fun
on Saturday. It's a lot like what they do at
the Masters, but then Sunday they're going to tighten it up.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
You know, right, you were just saying, you know you
and I kind of want to push a little bit
on this because I mean Xanderschoffle's sixty five's Lutwig had
a couple eagle chip INDs. I mean that was the
sixty six that ended up as sixty three, or maybe
a sixty five is sixty three. Xander goes perfect fourteen
for fourteen on fairways. This is that guy that won
a couple of majors a couple of years ago. It
(39:16):
looks like.
Speaker 7 (39:18):
It's always fascinating to me because I'm the guy that
goes to the range after a bad raunt, which means
I go to the range after every single one of
my rounds. Which is it to say, verg You see
it all the time on the PGA tour. Very rarely
do you see the turnaround that Xanderschoffle enjoyed. He hit
five or fourteen fairways on Thursday, retreated to the range,
was there until dark. With this wing coach Chris Como,
they found some sort of feel. It comes out and
(39:39):
goes fourteen for fourteen. As you pointed out, he lost
almost a stroke and a half to the field in
strokes stained off. The team gained almost three on Friday.
That is a dramatic, wholesale turnaround. And I think when
you ask him why, it's really the simple things. He
said that when you work with Chris Como, and he
kind of comes from the Sean Fully school, that it's
drinking out of a fire hose. Sometimes there's a lot
of information. Xanders said yesterday that they really just tried
(40:02):
to just give me bits and pieces. Don't give me
the whole picture yet, like just give me bits and pieces.
And clearly you mentioned it, he wants to get back
to whatever wherever he was in twenty twenty four. That
was pretty good when you're winning multiple major championships. So
that's the whole point of this exercise. They still feel
like they're kind of new together. But I love it
when you player sit into the dark on Thursday night
(40:22):
and whatever it is he finds he's able to apply
on Friday. That to me is magical.
Speaker 2 (40:27):
You know you mentioned the phrase dramatic turnaround if you
go week to week, that's Justin Thomas. He goes seventy
nine to seventy nine, DFL, misses the weekend at bay Hill,
and he comes out and he goes sixty eight sixty
eight to start things off. Apologies to Corey Connors, he's
tied with him at fourth and Cam Young who is
solo third. But what do you make of Justin Thomas
And you use the phrase explain xanders back to back days,
(40:49):
But a dramatic turnaround for Justin Thomas, who's finally back.
Maybe healthy, Maybe he looks like that JT again.
Speaker 7 (40:56):
Take healthy. He's definitely healthy. I don't think there's any
doubt about that one. I will be curious to see
how he finishes out the week. All that's sad is
I think that sixty eight sixty eight to start this
week was such a huge boost because for a player
that needs a lot of confidence, and we've seen it
throughout his career opening seventy nine. Seventy nine probably was
put him in a place, a bad place, because suddenly
(41:17):
you're coming off this very long injury and you have
a lot of doubt going into that to begin with,
and then you do this where his words, not mine.
It was embarrassing. He had to go home and figure
out what in the world was that? How can I
change that around. I don't think anybody needed a solid
start to this week, more so than justin Thomas, and
now he's in a position where he has a little
bit of confidence. I thought it was fascinating yesterday he
(41:39):
talked about I asked him specifically, is it more physical,
is it more taxing physically coming off an injury like
this or mentally? And he said mentally one hundred percent.
He said he has found himself over these last four rounds,
going back to Bayhill last quote unquote now and said
he was a little spacey, which I can relate to.
I feel a little spacey all the time in my life.
But he's got to get a taddy to lock them
(42:01):
back in, and I think that's fascinating to me. I
don't know what happens over the next two days with JT,
because I think there's still some russ there. You pointed
out that maybe there was a little smoke and mirrors
with Luvig and maybe the same thing with JT. But
I don't think you can discount the confidence that he
picked up through two days here at Sawgras.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
You know Rex earlier in the week, Brian Rolap and
you know and for years that you kind of get
the state of the game, the state of the union,
state of the tour. Brian Rolapp spoke, We'll we'll catch
up with you on those items here in the coming weeks.
But I want to ask you right off the that
we started our show talking about last week's winner in Akshay.
We saw another collapse, if you will, with Daniel Berger.
But the Internet would like to know, is Axha Badia cheating.
Speaker 7 (42:42):
Every time someone wins at Potter. I always love those
the bruder films that come out and everyone's trying to
take this deep dive and I don't know this kind
of that. I was talking with the rules official here
at CPC Sawgrass earlier in the week. It's whatever's in
the player's heart, to be honest with you, and that's
essentially what the rule is that the player knows if
they're anchoring or not. I don't know. I don't think
you can really, it's not definitive in my mind. I
(43:04):
think Hawkshake clearly if he does accidentally touch his body
with the putter, which would technically the anchoring, he's certainly
not doing it on purpose. And I don't even know
what the advantage would be. Honestly. I think they can
have a long equipment conversation at a later day, but
I think that was one of the rule changes that
probably was a little over there.
Speaker 2 (43:23):
Rex. Always good to catch up with you, and we
appreciate you taking some time for us. I know you've
been dealing with Laryn Jadis, you're hopped up on steroids.
You're sounding great. I know you powered through your podcast,
the Non Emergency Emergency podcast Golf Channel podcast with Rex
and Laugh earlier this week, and we appreciate it and
we're glad to hear that you're sounding better. Hopefully you're
feeling as much better as you sound.
Speaker 7 (43:46):
Digital allergy I was this week years old when I
even learned that was a thing.
Speaker 2 (43:52):
Yeah, so allergies takes your voice away, which not great
for a brother, and you know, not great for an
Emmy Award winning broadcast, but we're glad that you were
feeling well when you put out that tremendous maybe future
Emmy Award winning piece with Gary Woodland early this week.
For any of our listeners, don't listen to us at
turn off our radio show right now and go find
that on YouTube. Watch Gary Woodland with Rex Hogrid. Rex,
(44:14):
thanks so much, always good to catch up with you.
Speaker 7 (44:17):
That's terrible promotion.
Speaker 2 (44:18):
Right it is. I'm literally telling our listeners to not
listen to us, but I think it's for a good cause.
Speaker 7 (44:23):
Rex appreciate you. See you guys too.
Speaker 2 (44:26):
There you go, that's Rex Hoggrid. Yeah, right now, you
can go ahead watch the watch the interview with Rex
and Gary Woodland. Rail me back. They off Gaming One
on one is next Proceeding has been a paid program.
Speaker 9 (44:36):
This is the story of the one as a maintenance
tech at a university, he knows ordering from multiple suppliers
takes time away from keeping their arena up and running.
That's why he counts on Granger to get everything.
Speaker 2 (44:49):
Thanks again to Rex Hoggard, senior writer for Golf Channel
dot com and obviously Rex does tremendous work on air.
At golf Channel dot com. It's a lot easier to
a story when you're dealing with laryngitis. As he was
just telling us. I don't know if you guys heard,
but earlier this week was he didn't do some TV
and then he tried his damnedest to do the podcast,
(45:11):
the Golf Channel Podcast with Rex and Lav after the
Thursday first round at the Players, and he was rough
in it. Man, he was a poor guy, had lost
his voice and trying to do some broadcasting, searching for
a lozenge dealing with that, and we appreciate him taking
some time, but we do highly encourage anybody go out there.
In addition to Rex is great, we're covering the live
event that piece that he did with Gary Woodland, who
(45:34):
is already a fan favorite here in Phoenix, will forever
be connected with him and Amy Bokerstett in that moment
when she says I got this on sixteen drains a
putt and Gary Woodland one of the most likable guys.
Rex Hawkin is one of the most likable guys that
covers golf out there as well well respected. There's a
reason why he wins Emmy's the reason why he's the
Golf Rights Association of America President and we're lucky to
(45:57):
have him join us every week here on Basin the
Golf Show. Make sure to check out the Golf Channel
podcast with Rex and Laugh. Usually it's just like Sunday
and Wednesday, but when they're at big tournaments, I won't
say majors, but when they're at the Majors and the
players and the Ryder Cup, they do extra podcasts after
every round, so they'll have one up out there tonight.
(46:18):
So after listening to Backsmith the Golf Shows Podcast, then
you can listen to the Golf Channel Podcast with Rex
and Laugh coming up a little bit later this hour.
Next segment, Georgia McNeil PGA Tour Champions rookie. He just
turned fifty in October and he's already off to a
great start on the PGA Tour Champions making his debut
just a few weeks ago, and he already has a
T five and a T two in his back pocket.
(46:41):
He's getting ready for the Colli Guard Classic coming up
next week at La Paloma down in Tucson. We're gonna
take you out to another course, not just Southern Dunes.
There's another course that you can play under the lights.
We're gonna take you out to that for our Truan
spotlight and beat the Pro. Is a huge potential pot
for the Vaals Bar could be up to four one
hundred dollars. That's late this hour, but first.
Speaker 1 (47:03):
It's time for Gold Gaming presented by Golf Club with
Backspin's very own Wizard of Os coach Brady Wilson.
Speaker 2 (47:15):
All Right, Brady, I'm gonna start things off. We got
to look back at We got to look back at
last week. We had another collapse. When we were talking
about this on the show. Last week, we were looking
at Daniel Berger with a huge lead and there was
probably a lot of people out there thinking, well, I
don't have a chance, this guy's gonna win. And we
(47:35):
had back to back weeks we had a collapse.
Speaker 3 (47:38):
We gave out Burger to come back. We thought Burger
we was gonna hold it on. We gave him out
on best bets to win. That's red.
Speaker 2 (47:46):
Well, sorry to start there, but I mean, but that
doesn't happen too often where a guy goes and blows
that kind of a lead.
Speaker 3 (47:51):
I didn't think we'd see it back to back week,
So I was kind of betting, you know, like you
know law of averages, right, Like, okay, this is going
to happen back to back weeks, so let's let's bet
Burger to hold on and win. And he did not.
Back to best bets last week, you know, best bets
have been hitting at sixty percent. That's what the bets
given out here on this show Live and and and
(48:15):
then you know on Saturdays more Kala did beat Ober's
last round three matchup, and uh we we had Zander
to finish in the top ten. He didn't. We maybe
we just bet on him a little early because he's
playing well today. See what Kim missed the top twenty
by just a little bit. Danny Berger didn't win, so
we get we had some losses. Last week, John Ram
(48:38):
to win on Live. We did give out that we
did hit that winner, and you know USA to cover
against Great Britain and the WBC that was a that
was a nice win as well. So we had some
winners on best bets given out last week on the show.
But again those are hitting for the year at sixty percent,
So feel pretty good about the best bets that were
(48:58):
given out here on the show.
Speaker 2 (49:00):
I would be taking notes in a few moments for
co out.
Speaker 3 (49:03):
That's right now. On Wednesdays, we give out our Instagram picks.
Those are the pre tournament picks that kind of get
you started for the weekend and then you know, hopefully
you're tuning in for best bets to get a little
bit further dialed in.
Speaker 2 (49:15):
Yeah, make sure to follow us at Backspin Golf Show.
We usually we usually you know, toss it out there ourselves.
We you know, post it out there too, but follow
the station account at Backspin Golf Show for those picks
every usually Wednesdays. Sometimes you get you're feeling frisking, you
throw it out on Tuesday.
Speaker 3 (49:29):
Yeah, and we did pretty good last with the Bay Hill,
you know, going back almost ten days. You know, we
did pretty good with the Instagram picks that we gave
out that week. You know, again, the tournament matchups, we've
done pretty well with that. Cameron Young versus Calamarak Kawer
for the whole tournament was a winner. Russell Henley versus
Patrick Cantley was a winner. The winner of the tournament
(49:50):
to par the seventy second hole. So because they were
in a playoff, I had to go back and see
what Aukuha did on eighteen at Bay Hill, and of
course he did make par there, so that was a winner.
Those are kind of I try to find something fun
to give out on the Instagram picks always love it.
So this week, you know, we gave out our Instagram
picks on Wednesday when it was a little bit of
(50:10):
a smaller a smaller uh you know, bet slip, but
uh we took Scotti Scheffler top ten minus one sixty.
That didn't that's you know, he's four under today, five under.
I mean he's got a shot to get there, but
it would take an immaculate couple of rounds here. At
least he's on his way. You know. We did give
(50:32):
out Colin Marikawa and a couple of different bets and
then he withdrew.
Speaker 2 (50:35):
Out so practice swing on on eleven, which he started
on ten. So he played one hole, he takes one
practice swings. Yeah, I'm done, I'm out. Yeah, And uh
so how does that play because he actually started he
didn't withdraw before the Richard back okay, good.
Speaker 3 (50:50):
Yeah, so so those are those are just pushes, but
she just get back. We did give out seaw Kim
top twenty. He's right around that number right now, and
then we give out Cam Young top twenty and he's
I think third, right yeah, yeah, so feel pretty good
about and that was plus money. Cam Young just feels
like he's hitting it well and he's he's playing consistently,
(51:14):
so you'll, uh that might be a tip for best bets,
like kind of like where Cam Young's at. And then
with uh with Eric Cohen from CBS Sports Line and
the early Wedge Boys, we have our head to head
bets going for the for the year for and one
against Eric anyway, but.
Speaker 2 (51:31):
This week, no big deal.
Speaker 3 (51:33):
He gave out he wanted Fleetwood. I was like, oh, okay,
so we're getting into the favorite. Yeah, we're going yeah, okay,
let's go. Okay. So I took call Americawa and then
he Withdrew and he immediately he immediately messaged me on
on Twitter and said, hey, we can just we can
just nullify this bet and take it off this week,
or you can have you can take someone who hasn't
(51:54):
teed off yet. Okay, yeah, you can follow this threat
on social if you really want to get into X.
But so I took Cam Young, So I got Cam
Young versus Fleetlid Cam Young hadn't teed off yet, so
uh we are. We are battling the the CBS Sports
Line guys and backspin.
Speaker 2 (52:11):
He's ten right now.
Speaker 3 (52:12):
If we can't, if we keep dominating those guys, we
may have to have him on just as a guest.
Speaker 2 (52:17):
Just just to eat crow.
Speaker 3 (52:19):
Yeah, just just come on, come on the show. But anyway,
we did you know tournament matchups for the for the
whole week, Fitzpatrick and Hovelin they're tied. So that's a
really matchup that we're gonna watch closely.
Speaker 7 (52:33):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (52:33):
I gave out Coody over Mitchell. That is a loser.
Uh Coody missed to cut. Mitchell's playing well, so that
one's already in the books as a loss. And then
Speed versus Lowry, Just Lowry seems to be in a
funk and and Jordan's playing pretty good, so that one is,
uh for now looking looking pretty good. Now we'll get
into some of the fun bets that you can find.
And again with with with the course at at TBC
(52:57):
Sawgrass and seventeenth Pole, the Island Green. They're gonna have
the whole location today. That's the better, the most whole location.
Speaker 2 (53:04):
You see, they actually have the Cup. There's a special
cup in.
Speaker 3 (53:06):
The liner in the Cup that commemorates that is better
than most. Yeah, how many what's over under on that
replay being played on your broadcast?
Speaker 4 (53:15):
Oh my gosh, I don't even want to set that line.
Speaker 3 (53:17):
Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm on the other side of
that one set in the line. I'm gonna take the
over whatever line you set, though, but total tournament birdies
are better. That means any aces or two's on whole
seventeen over sixty six and a half. I don't know
where they're at, but that seems like, you know, it
is a It is a fairly short shot for these guys.
It's usually a wedge or a nine iron in their hands.
(53:39):
So that I did give that out as an over.
And then total tournament balls in the water on whole seventeen,
I gave that out as an over at forty and
a half. And I went back and did some research
the last ten years, Nine of the ten years have
been forty one or higher, So that's why I kind
of went with that.
Speaker 4 (53:59):
Over at twenty two right now.
Speaker 3 (54:01):
Yeah, there, and then the pressure of the weekend, oh yeah,
and with the wind and the rain coming in knowing
that that was going to be a factor. On Thursday,
I took all overs on round one scores Scotti Scheffler,
who's known for not playing well on Thursdays.
Speaker 2 (54:19):
As of late.
Speaker 3 (54:20):
Yeah, took him over sixty nine and a half. That one, Uh,
that one covered. I did take Colin Marikawa over seventy
and a half, but you know he withdrew and then
I fading, oh okha with all the uh drama from
the week, I took him over seventy and a half
and that one hit, so you know he shot seventy one.
(54:41):
I believe so right there, and then down in Live Golf,
we gave out some picks there that looked pretty good.
Carlos Ortiz top twenty, Thomas Detree top twenty, Sergio needs
to play better, but and then Joaquin Neeman top ten.
Poogi did not play well, So I don't know if
that one's going to hit on top ten, but John
top five. All picks that we give out there and
(55:03):
then had some fun with. Is the Italy World Baseball
team the most Italian team of all time?
Speaker 2 (55:12):
Well, they're all Americans, all American Italian hair, a couple.
Speaker 3 (55:17):
Of Italian like native Italians right on the team, and.
Speaker 2 (55:21):
Those are the guys that don't fit in with their teammate.
Speaker 3 (55:24):
They don't play, one of which is just ripping heaters
in the bullpen. By the way, did you see that. Yeah,
he's just smoking in between innings. I'm like, that's the
most Italian thing ever, you know, and everything is like,
you know, pascatino, right, but pascuatine, you know, and they're
drinking the cappuccino in the when they have express machine. Yeah,
(55:45):
it's you know, someone someone told me, you just gotta
not say the last vowel, you know, in the word
a little early, right, mazzarell pepperone pepperone pascuatine. So anyway,
he went three dongs, uh, and they we needed them
to beat Mexico, which he did, so we gave that
one out and give out some Premier League picks and
(56:06):
old Richie behind the glass he likes f one, so
we gave out Leclaire to finish in the podium there speaking,
that was a Richie love pick.
Speaker 2 (56:15):
You usually we talk about people, you know, ripping heaters.
It's it's a reference to Charlie Hall, who's not smoking anymore.
Did you guys see though that Seawou Kim just yesterday
is there's there's a backum in the tea box and
who he's waiting to tee off at seven and he
just like sneaks into the bushes and lights up a cigarettes.
Speaker 4 (56:33):
Just hanging out in the wood smoking a cig. Come on,
closet smoker.
Speaker 3 (56:41):
Maybe it's not too closet he's doing it. Maybe not
closet anyway, let's get into some best bets. I want
to go out right here this week's picks right uh,
and maybe maybe a little shot at Eric Cohen. But
I like Cam Young top five here. I think he's
gonna if you look at the way he's playing, just
hitting the ball super solid. He's he's very long too,
(57:02):
and so I I like his his chances top five
right now. You can give him minus one thirty. The
Canadian Corey Connors. I mean, the Canadians gonna do something.
They've lost in hockey, they've lost in baseball, they lost
them both hockey and men's and women's hockey. I mean
like they got to do something. So I like Corey
Connors from up norefware top ten minus one forty four
(57:25):
today Round three matchups just for this round just today,
they haven't teed off yet again. Cam Young versus OBErs Oberg.
I like, I just think him coming off of sixty
three yesterday, you're not you know, my kind of tendency
to want to face someone when they go deep.
Speaker 2 (57:43):
I mean, and you're you're not gonna be chipping in
two eagles right every round.
Speaker 3 (57:48):
Cam Young, just like lud Big, looks like he's due
for coming back to the field. That's been the trend anyway.
He's got a two stroke lead, but I think he
comes back a little bit today. So I like Cam
Young minus one twenty lud Dick, and I like Xander
minus one fifteen versus Fleetwood. That's the Eric Cohen fate.
So then and Xander also just striking well when you're
(58:10):
probably talking about three two of the best ball strikers,
and Cam Young and Xander there, So I feel like
that's important. You know, when we when I was looking
at the analytics for the players, one of the you know,
I do strokes skined off the tee and stroke shaaning
around the green. But one of the one of the
the analytics I plugged in this week was distance from
the edge of fairway because you got to hit the
(58:32):
ball straight right, you know, there's trouble on both sides,
Like they talk about it in the broadcast. You gotta
be able to work the ball both ways. Gotta hit draws,
gotta hit cuts. But down the middle is always good,
right Andrew right, like, never belittle a ball in the middle.
So I like those two guys just with their ball striking.
And then on the live I think I think Joaquin
(58:53):
Neman gets it done. I've been watching him for the
last two weeks. I picked him last week. He had
a little bit of a struggle on on Sunday last week.
Maybe you can insert joke here about playing seventy two
holes versus fifty four. But I think Nieman to win.
I think he wins down there in Singapore just like that.
Also ball striking right, uh. And then Thomas Deetree had
(59:15):
a bad Round three, but really also a guy hitting
the ball well, and I think he'll top ten. That's
minus one twenty. Now some bonus picks this week. We
have the TGL semi finals coming up, but and and
so there'll be some some picks coming out on that.
But right now there's four teams in the playoffs. I
like the LA Golf Club to win it all. You
can get them right now to be to raise the cup,
(59:37):
to raise the trophy at plus two forty, I think
that's uh. I think that's a good a good pick
right there. It's I think it's gonna come down to
LA Golf Club in Boston Common. We've given that out
before as the matchup for the finals.
Speaker 2 (59:48):
We've got the swag for both teams on our on
our YouTube live stream right now.
Speaker 3 (59:53):
Yeah, and it is selection. It is you know, conference
tournament week and selection Saturday Sunday tomorrow. So some bast
capol for today. If you're looking to get in some
college hoops and start watching before the big tournament, we're
going to do a bracket challenge Andrew right, we've got
that coming out. But uh, Wichita State.
Speaker 1 (01:00:12):
I believe it's witch which Wichita State.
Speaker 3 (01:00:16):
Okay, Wichita State.
Speaker 2 (01:00:18):
A cheetah, That's what That's what people in Boston have
been saying about ox Chase since since Bahill.
Speaker 3 (01:00:22):
Wichita plus one oh two versus Tulsa. I think they're
the better team and they're Tulsa's favored, but I like
I like Wichita there and then down down in the Pueblo.
We got the Champions Tour coming down there to the Tucson.
I like the Wildcats. I don't like the Wildcats, but
I like the Wildcats to win this week minus one
(01:00:42):
twenty two. Versus Houston on a.
Speaker 2 (01:00:44):
Wood court on a got rid of the glass court
with the screens and the LEDs on a wood court,
you're taking the u of a.
Speaker 3 (01:00:50):
We are American. We like the Americans. I think they
got their wake up call, uh for from with Italy
in the in the pool play. I think if you
want them to go ahead, didn't finish out the WBC,
you can get them to win it all right now
the champion to be the champions come Monday or Tuesday
night plus one thirty. And then tennis, And this is
(01:01:11):
a random You're like, why tennis, Brady Well, we were
at Indian Wells last Yeah. Yeah, in December Indian Wells
Golf Resort and.
Speaker 2 (01:01:18):
The beautiful course reopened. That always tremendous.
Speaker 3 (01:01:21):
Yeah. Member of the team Truan family. Right. Well, the
city of Indian Wells also has a tennis turn over there.
That is their fifth major. That's that is it's the
it's uh you know, one of the greatest fields you.
They bring in everybody. They were one of the first
tournaments even over the US Open, and wimpledon to have
Hawkeye on every court back in the day. I was
(01:01:43):
a member when I lived over there at the Tennis Gardens,
it's it's a phenomenal place. So the B and P
pair about Indian Wells Carlos alcaraz to win it all
minus one seventy right now, that's good odds. He's by
far the best player left in there. So there's some
best bets for you. Donic Center's still in there, but
spanning the globe, spanning the globe, spanning the wide world
(01:02:04):
of sports.
Speaker 2 (01:02:05):
Well, we just spanned the globe with a whole bunch
of picks in golf gaming one oh one. We are
gonna turn our attention to the Old Pueblo as your
reference here with the Color Guard Classic presented by Exact
Sciences coming up next week, and we are excited to
be joined by PGA Tour Champions Rookie he just turned
fifty last year last October, George McNeil joins batsmanth the
(01:02:26):
Golf Show next.
Speaker 3 (01:02:28):
Since nineteen forty five, foot Joy has been the shoe
of choice on tour. That's over eighty consecutive years that
the players at the highest level in golf have chosen
foot Joy as their shoe of choice. Foot Joy has
shoes for every player, whether you prefer style, performance, traction, stability,
or comfort, from the modern Classic Premier Series worn by
many tour players like Adam Scott to the new Athletic.
Speaker 2 (01:02:47):
Then things wrap up ever the charleswab Cup Championship at
Phoenix Country Club this year. But man, we get things
going next week at the Color Guard Classic by Exact Sciences,
and we are excited to be joined here on Baxsmith
of the Golf Show by George McNeil PGA Tour champions
Rookie means he just turned fifty in October. George, it's Mike,
it's Brady, it's Andrew. Thanks so much for taking some
(01:03:09):
time to jump on with us today. We appreciate it absolutely.
Speaker 8 (01:03:13):
Thank you guys, Thanks for having me. I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:03:15):
All right, We're going to talk some golf here in
a sec, but I want to go back. You went
to Florida State. You're Florida State guy. What was your
nil deal? Because Charlie has just got three million.
Speaker 8 (01:03:26):
Didn't get that much. I haven't heard. I don't know
if I would ever finish college or finish college golf
if I had got three million dollars in college, especially
back in the mid nineties, and at Florida State it
was I think we were ranked the number one party
school in the country at that time, and they may
be still I don't know, but yeah, I don't know
(01:03:47):
if I'd ever really attended class or anything with three
million dollars. So my my deal was zero, so I
had I had to earn my way out and to
figure it out. But that's that's the heck of a
deal for some of these kids coming into college.
Speaker 2 (01:04:01):
I mean, the Seminoles not too shabby. They got Miles
Russell coming in at number five in terms of biggest
NIL deals as well as they have they have two
in the top five in terms of n I L deals.
But Uh, as a Seminole, I'm sure you got to
be excited about about Tiger's young man joining your your
your beloved uh Seminoles there in Tallahassee.
Speaker 7 (01:04:20):
Absolutely.
Speaker 8 (01:04:21):
I mean Trey Trey Jones, the head coach there, He's
he's done a great job recruiting and keeping the kids there,
and you know you have uh Luke Clanton who obviously
just turned pro last year, and a few others, but
I mean it Goes Brooks kept and Daniel Berger and
Jonas Blix and going on down the line, Hank Levoda.
(01:04:45):
Those guys are just incredible tour players. But they all
started at Florida State and uh, and Trey was recruiting
those guys. So, uh, he's doing a heck of a job.
And to get Miles who I believe he's from Jacksonville,
I think jack Valaria and he was always a big
Florida State fan from what I hear. I met him once, nice,
(01:05:06):
super nice kid. And then Charlie of course with Tigers
his dad, and I'm known Tiger. He and I have
the same age. Obviously, Tiger just turned fifty. I've known Tiger.
I don't know him like super personal, but we were
friendly when we see each other. But he's always to
have him obviously best golf forever and his son and
(01:05:27):
then be affiliated with FSU is I think going to
do wonders for that program.
Speaker 2 (01:05:31):
All right, So his son is joining your alma mater
at Florida State, and it's only a matter of time
before Tiger joins you on the PGA Tour champions We
were all hoping for that to happen here. As you mentioned,
you're the same age he He just turned fifty in December.
You turned fifty in October. And what a great start
to the season. I know you don't you haven't held
up a trophy yet, but you have to be pleased
with T five at the Chub Classic, your debut on
(01:05:53):
the PGA Tour champions and then at the last week
at the James Hardy Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational,
a T two for you. A pretty good start to
your your senior circuit.
Speaker 7 (01:06:04):
For sure.
Speaker 1 (01:06:05):
I was.
Speaker 8 (01:06:05):
People asked me that same question after after the Chubb.
I was. I said I couldn't other than maybe winning,
or I said, I really couldn't script this any better.
Uh I was born in Naples. Uh I live in
Southwest Florida in Fort Myers, so hometown. Event first one,
everything just came together and I played well. I don't
think I played my best, but I played well, and
(01:06:28):
obviously to finish as high as I did, I didn't.
I didn't expect that. I had really had no expectations
for that week. I was nervous, I was excited, I
was anxious. I was all of the above when I started,
because again it was I'm I'm the new guy. I
was the rookie that uh you know, this year, I'm
a rookie and I'm that was my very first event.
So to get a T five there at Chubb and
(01:06:49):
then go on to James Hardy the following a couple
of weeks later and ty for second, I'm going, wow, Okay,
you know, I've been working hard on my game for
the last couple of years. I went out, I played
the corn Ferry Tour. They had a category out there,
the forty eight forty nine category, so allowing guys to
come out and play to basically prepare for the Champions Tour,
(01:07:12):
and uh so that's what I did. And then so
I played thirteen events in twenty twenty five, between the
corn Ferry and the PGA Tour. I played seven Corn
Ferry and six PGA Tour so to get my mind
and my body back in shape, get ready for the
Champions Tour, to prep obviously for this opportunity. And I
feel like it's it's for sure working, but you know,
(01:07:34):
I work hard. I work hard. On my game, and
I know I have an opportunity to play and play well,
and I want to take every advantage I can.
Speaker 1 (01:07:43):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:07:43):
Last week you were paired with a big bald guy
from New Mexico. Spend some time in Chicago. He's a
friend of the program here. Do you have any good
ear Lacker stories?
Speaker 8 (01:07:57):
We you know Brian.
Speaker 3 (01:07:58):
He he's a golf nut.
Speaker 8 (01:08:00):
Tremendous guy. He is a golf nut. I could tell
just from the start. And and he's very uh his
knowledge is golf knowledge is very high. He's got a
high golf IQ. I think he's real good friends with
Kevin Streelman as well, uh, living there in the Phoenix area.
And but we we talked a little bit. We didn't
talk a bunch obviously, I was trying to do my
(01:08:22):
job while I was playing. Uh, but we were chatting.
And but mostly when we did start chatting a little bit,
we were talking about fishing, because he's a he's a
huge fisherman. He actually says that he has a boat
in Naples that he goes, uh, you know, once or
twice a month or every other month or so. He'll
fly in and they'll go off shore fishing, which is
something I've I've always done growing up in that area.
(01:08:43):
So we were we didn't really talk much about golf.
We were talking about fishing. So but he is, uh
what a what a great guy and uh obviously a
fantastic Hall of Fame football player, and but he's he's
got some games. He's got some golf game too, So
I could I could tell that right away. And uh
so we had a really good time on that Saturday.
Speaker 3 (01:09:02):
It looks like he could go out and play on
Sunday still too, doesn't he. Hey, switching gears to this
coming week col of Guard, big event for us here
in Arizona. You know, kind of a staple on the
Champions Tour schedule. Have you have you been to La
Paloma before? Have you played the golf course? What are
you looking forward to down there? I mean it's they
(01:09:23):
have twenty seven holes and they kind of you playing
nine of nine holes of in their traditional format and
then they kind of mix up the the other two
nines with a few holes from both. Have you have
you been out there? What do you what's your take
so far?
Speaker 8 (01:09:38):
Honestly, I have not. I've not been there all these
courses this year on the Champions Tour. I'd say probably
ninety percent of them are all going to be new
to me. And really, I've never even been to Tucson.
I've only been to Phoenix area, played the waste management
multiple times over the years, but never been to Tucson.
(01:09:58):
So I'm looking forward to that and the golf course.
I've heard a lot of great things about it. There's
some elevation change change on the on the course because
I know it backs up to the mountains there and stuff,
and so I'm looking forward to it. I know the
forecast is going to be a little warm, which is
nothing that's born to me but coming from Florida. But
the but I know the uh, it's a dry heat,
(01:10:21):
as everybody says, But I don't know. So it's it's hot.
It's still hot. It don't matter if it's drier or humid.
It's just it's part of it.
Speaker 3 (01:10:30):
Yeah, that's the that's the March one degree swing that
we get every year. That kind of sends the snowbirds home.
Speaker 8 (01:10:37):
Sure, So, George, we look for that down here in
Florida as well.
Speaker 4 (01:10:43):
Hey, George, you know, as a as a guy that
spent all my spring breaks and summer breaks and Christmas breaks.
As a kid growing up down in Naples, Florida, my
parents had a place down there. What is your favorite
restaurant down there?
Speaker 8 (01:10:59):
Oh and pour Myers or in Naples, I should say, Man,
there's so many. Uh, honestly, I I go to, Uh,
there's a there's a steakhouse. It's called Jimmy Pea's. And
but he's also a butcher, so you can go in
there and buy uh steaks and stuff like that.
Speaker 7 (01:11:17):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (01:11:17):
But Jimmy Pea's is just uh, it's it's known around
a lot of the country clubs buy their meat from
him and from from the butcher shops. So when when
you have a lot of the high end country clubs
doing that, you know it's a good spot. But you
go in there, it's almost like it's almost like a
local uh you only see there aren't too many tourists
(01:11:38):
hanging around in there. So to me, that's probably my favorite.
Another one would be Tommy Bahamas down on uh down
on third Street South and in Old Naples. So that's
another good spot. Uh, just casual and easy going. So
it's it's terrest season obviously, as you guys get it.
In Arizona, we get it. In southwest Florida, there's a
(01:11:58):
lot of a lot of people well, but they hit
most of the tourist spots. So I try and find
all the local, out of the way spots and that
I don't want to say it's not crowded, but if
not as crowded, you.
Speaker 4 (01:12:11):
Know, I do miss going with my my my brothers
to Cheaberger.
Speaker 3 (01:12:15):
Cheaberger.
Speaker 4 (01:12:16):
That was one of my favorite places I looked forward
to every every time.
Speaker 3 (01:12:22):
Down in Florida.
Speaker 4 (01:12:25):
But you know, I want to get back to golf
with you, Georgia. You know you've you've won not just once,
but you won a couple of times on tour, and
you know the the preparation that you have put in
to be a quote unquote rookie. Now you know what's
one thing about your game that you're really focusing on
(01:12:47):
and getting ready when you come out here to Arizona.
Speaker 8 (01:12:52):
Well, for the past, probably again in two years, I've
been really focusing on my wedge play. I was never
agree eight short iron player when I played the PGA Tour.
I was always a pretty good mid and long iron player.
I drive it, okay, I don't say I don't drive
it great but I drive it okay, but my wedge
(01:13:13):
play was never I would say it was below average,
especially for for the PGA Tour. Uh So that's what
I've really focused on the last couple of years, trying
to get my wedge play a lot better, get my
yardages dialed in, being able to hit you know, hit
my numbers, which he with, you know, all my clubs,
so from about an eight iron down because most of
(01:13:34):
these courses they're not obviously they're not as long as
the PGA Tour, so I know I'm gonna have a
lot of eight nine wedges in the holes our fours
and stuff. So I got to take advantage of those holes.
And so that's been my focus. My putting is getting better.
It's not great. My first two weeks the Chubb and
then James Hardy. I put it okay, but I feel
(01:13:56):
like if I'd have put it well, I would I've
not not that I would have won, but I had
a better chance. I know T five and T two
are still pretty good finishes, but I felt like I
could have played a lot better had I made some putts.
So there's always golf is there's it's continuous, it never ends.
Working on your game, looking at your areas that you
(01:14:17):
can improve. And that's what I've been trying to look
at in my game. And I knew my wedge game
and my short irons weren't great, So that's what I've
been working on in my putting too.
Speaker 2 (01:14:28):
Well. George, it's been a pleasure catching up with you.
We really appreciate the time. Thanks for joining Batsman the
Golf Show. It's a great to have George McNeil PGA
Tour Champions rookie and you know, to be quite honest
and and and you know, stealing the headlines or Ernie
Els and Fred Couples and John Daly are committed to
playing the Color Guard Classic by exact sciences. You know,
you've got the mechanic. And Miguel Hana Hell Jimenez a
(01:14:50):
former winner, Bernard Longer, Tom Lahman are all in the field.
Stewart Sink your fellow rookie, you played with him, he
won last week, Zach Johnson. But I think here in
Phoenix we look at a guy like Steven Alker who
joined the PGA Tour or Champions Tour, turned fifty, really
turned it on and he's the defending champion down there
in two Sione, and I think that there's there's a
(01:15:12):
there's a common thread in terms of him and you
when I look at your start so far on the
PGA Tour Champions as a guy that that just became
eligible for the tour and is already off to a
hot start. So great start to your PGA Tour Champions
so far.
Speaker 8 (01:15:26):
Great, Yeah, yeah, I appreciate it. And I look at
Steven Alker and go, wow, I mean he was almost
a I never you know, nobody ever really heard him. Hell,
I didn't even really hear of him until he got
on the Champions Tour. So I look at that as well,
and go, he is killing it and he just kind
of plays with himself. So that's all I'm trying to do.
But yeah, those big names obviously got Couples and and
(01:15:49):
Ernie Els and Bernhard and all those guys. Miguel, they're
they're the names, and those those are guys who players
want or the expectators want to come out and see.
So hell, I'll sit there and watch them on the
range just because they're they're legends. So I would I would,
uh put some of the younger guys. Zac Johnson obviously,
(01:16:09):
uh is a is a tremendous player, So I look
forward to it and look forward to playing.
Speaker 3 (01:16:14):
And we'll get this cut and sent to you somehow
so that you can hit up Jimmy P's and Tommy
mohamma for some bag space or shoulders.
Speaker 4 (01:16:24):
I love it than free me.
Speaker 2 (01:16:26):
All right, Uh there you go. Always good to have
have a PGA Tour Champions rookie, like George McNeil, you know,
and I feel like it was just a couple of
years ago we had Steven Alker on the show and
just like George McNeil said, like you know, our listeners
had people test me, going, I've never heard of this guy.
We've heard of Steven Alker now and off to a
great start so far in his PGA Tour Champions career.
(01:16:46):
Two tournaments in at the Chub Classic and the James
Hardy Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational last week T
five and T two not too shabby.
Speaker 3 (01:16:53):
Yeah, we're gonna get a backspin bump, so yeah, I
have to put some odds there on old Georgie, some.
Speaker 2 (01:16:58):
Backsman karma for George mcnie on Simonole. Next week.
Speaker 3 (01:17:01):
Look for that to be in the Wednesday picks.
Speaker 4 (01:17:03):
It's just so funny to hear that these guys like
like George, who has won twice on the PGA Tour,
we're calling him a rookie.
Speaker 7 (01:17:10):
You know, yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:17:12):
He is is Yeah, definitely not rookies. There're some of
those other names that we mentioned Ernie L's, Fred Couple's
World Golf Hall of Famers are Tief Goosen, Patty Harrington
going to be out there. Rookies like George McNeil and
Zach Johnson will be out there as well. The color
Guard Classic by Exac Sciences field is nearly set. They've
announced their five sponsor exemptions. Local favorite Ted Perdy Arizona Wildcat,
(01:17:36):
big fan favorite a sponsor exemption, so making it into
the color Guard Classic as well. Really good field shaping
up for next week at to Sound encourage anybody, go online,
get your tickets color Guard Classic dot com and you
can get down there and check out, check out George
and more next week down at La Paloma. Speaking of
La Poloma, that's a that's a that's a truon course
(01:17:57):
over there, you know, part of the Trun family. Gonna
give you a spotlight at maybe maybe maybe a golf course.
You aren't gonna play during the day. Maybe you're gonna
play at night. Maybe maybe you book a t time
and they ask you is at nine am or nine pm?
Speaker 3 (01:18:10):
Spot they're spotlighted.
Speaker 10 (01:18:12):
I like it.
Speaker 2 (01:18:12):
That's next.

In our true spotlight, world class courses, championship conditions, unforgettable experiences.
Welcome to the Truon Spotlight, presented by Truon goolf az
dot com, your gateway to the very best of Arizona golf.
Speaker 3 (01:18:56):
Fan.
Speaker 2 (01:18:58):
So, you know, we talked a little that you could
play under the lights, and there's you know, there's some
other driving ranges that have lights and stuff like that,
but man grass clippings, rolling hills. If you want to
get out. The first fully lit eighteen hole golf course
in Arizona, located in the beautiful Popecobutes I like the
fact that they're like the zoo is right there, so
you could tee off and there's like a tiger right
(01:19:19):
over there. Like that's kind of cool. And Andrew, I
know that's one of your favorites over there, grass clippings
rolling cause you've actually you've caddied in the in the
Grass League before and the grass clippings open before.
Speaker 4 (01:19:29):
I love that course. It's it's so much fun, the
like you were talking about. It's next to the zoo,
so there are times where you can hear the animals.
You're like, what in the world is that?
Speaker 2 (01:19:38):
In no wise, that's a cheetah watching me hit my approach.
Speaker 4 (01:19:41):
Okay, yeah, it's awesome. So you know, during the daytime
it's a par sixty six, par fours, twelve part threes,
and then at night it completely turns into a lit
up par three course.
Speaker 3 (01:19:53):
Is awesome.
Speaker 4 (01:19:54):
You you know, it's one of the, like you were saying,
one of the only places where you call them like, hey,
I need a nine am, right, I mean at nine
o'clock T times right am or pm? Yeah, you know
how cool? How cool is that times until ten pm? Yeah,
exactly so. And one of my favorite things though, is
they have the four seater party carts.
Speaker 3 (01:20:11):
Yeah, it's fun. Did you make sure you have the
right driver, I'm just telling you sober, Yeah, well just sober.
But also like driving the four balls is different than
driving the two balls.
Speaker 2 (01:20:23):
Right, Yeah, you kind of have to plan out your
approach a little bit different.
Speaker 3 (01:20:27):
But it's a great experience. I mean, it's really a
lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (01:20:30):
We and they always have it's great events a couple
times a year. You have the Grass League, you have
the grass Clippings Open coming up. The Qualifier Draft is
coming up on on the twenty second and twenty third.
Their event on the twenty fourth and twenty fifth. They
just announced, you know, some of the music act. They
always have great music acts stuff like that. I mean,
you guys have been out there a bunch, you know
for these events over the years. It's a party. It's
(01:20:51):
kind of like a mini w and Phoenix Open for
these events that they have at Grass Clippings, Rollings Hills,
you know, great Part three golf under the lights, but
also then there's a concert going on. Man, it's a party.
Speaker 3 (01:21:02):
Yeah, it's a great and they have a lot of
different amenities as well, just besides the nuance of the
of the lit course so you can play. They got
top tracer range experience out there, this twenty five bay structure.
It's really new. They just opened it this past year,
you know, covered hitting bays.
Speaker 2 (01:21:22):
They got the misters out there since starting to get
hot too. That's always helpful.
Speaker 3 (01:21:25):
Top tracer technology. There's a bar bus out there. I mean,
you can get your your cocktails from the bar bus.
It's just it's a really cool experience to just go
out and practice there.
Speaker 4 (01:21:36):
Oh it is great, great practice facilities. One of my
favorite things, not just playing golf, but I love Glenn
Rosa the restaurant. Yeah that they have the best tacos.
We're actually going to go meet some friends here in
just a little bit. Oh nice for that that are
in town. That I forgot that they were coming into town.
So they we're gonna go meet at there. There's some
(01:21:57):
cha's awesome. Yeah, yeah, it's it's so good. And then
what's cool too is their farmers market every other Sunday
through April twelfth. You get a farmer's market. And who
doesn't love a farmer's market. My wife absolutely loves a
farmer's market.
Speaker 3 (01:22:13):
Yeah, yeah, it's and then they have this Sauce Classic
coming up on the thirteenth through fourteenth saus but pronounced sauce.
Speaker 2 (01:22:21):
Yeah, that's a that's wrapping up today. And if anybody's
looking to get out there for a home course to practice,
they have they have a range passes well, the Grassy
Range Pass available just sixty five dollars a month, unlimited
range balls before four pm, fifty percent off on range
balls after four pm. Is you know, as you mentioned Brady,
the wonderful structure. They built shaded structure so you're hitting,
you're not baking in the sun. They've got you know,
(01:22:43):
the top trace or they've got TV's out there. F
and B discounts are part of that Grassy Range Pass
as well. And you guys mentioned Glen Ross. I took
my wife there for our an our first anniversary last year.
Thoroughly loved it. We've broadcasted. We were out there last
year for the Ryder Cup watch party. We were right
there in the Glen Rosa restaurant. It was tremendous. But
for everybody out there, but you're going Farmers Market, you're
(01:23:05):
going to hit balls, you're going to play under the.
Speaker 3 (01:23:07):
Lights, brunch on Saturday and Sunday.
Speaker 2 (01:23:10):
I mean brunches just breakfast and lunch, but with drinks, right,
isn't that what brunches? Just just food.
Speaker 3 (01:23:19):
Sunrise? Oh yeah, and you know a lot of times.
They do live music there every Friday and Saturday night.
So it's it's a cool spot. It's it's you get
out of it what you want. You want, you want
a restaurant. They having a nice little bar there, hues.
Speaker 2 (01:23:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:23:34):
The last time I was out there, I met up
with a buddy and we were just putting and having
a couple of drinks and they had yoga on the lawn,
so that was awesome, good scenery.
Speaker 3 (01:23:46):
Yeah, it was great.
Speaker 2 (01:23:47):
And you have the Grass Grass Clippings open coming up
at next month. Tickets are on sale now. If you
want to go online and get your get your tickets,
you can go on uh to to to their website
and get that. And they just announced the acts fur
their Live at the Clubhouse concert, the biggest party coming
to Tempe, Arizona. You got Fanogram and Ian Asher are
(01:24:08):
going to be performing on Friday, April twenty fourth, and
uh I'm a big fan of Saturday April twenty fifth
headliner Mike Mike Yeah, it's Mike Arden Jones going to
be there, but Mike with a period. It's like Mike
as in like it's the end of the sentence. But
I'm a big fan. Tickets are on sale now if
you want to get him. Head to the Grass Clippings
website for more grass clippings Rolling Hills, Brady, you mentioned
(01:24:32):
auction Southern Dunes. You can play under the lights. You
can do that here as well at Grass Clippings Rolling
Hills again live at the clubhouse coming up. They got concerts.
But you know, I mean, go ahead and go ahead
and hit some balls and or play eighteen starting at
ten o'clock at night. You know that's right, It's unbelievable.
And of course you know you could play out during
the day too. I mean it's not just under the lights.
(01:24:52):
You could technically play during the day.
Speaker 3 (01:24:54):
Yeah you can.
Speaker 4 (01:24:55):
Yeah, but it's I like playing under the lights.
Speaker 2 (01:24:57):
And with the temperatures going up, it's it's a good
time to do that. That's our true spotlight for this week.

pick going up against Patton Kazaire. Pete most of the
regional manager, by the way, when he's said in the pick,
he goes, you know, I may be. He kind of
kind of warmed me a little bit. He goes, I
might be coming out a left field on this one,
but I think he's playing okay. That's the Pete said, Uh,
he's playing okay. So Patton Kazaire is Pete's pick. I'm
(01:26:46):
not saying he's not gonna win. I'm just saying that
means that anybody else out there for the Valspar Championship
coming up at Copperhead next week could be yours eight five, five,
two six zero ninety one ninety one. For anybody who
doesn't know how it works, the money in the pod
goes up fifty dollars each week. We don't have a winner.
Vans Golf Shop gift cards this week could be three
(01:27:07):
hundred and fifty dollars if Chris got up, Scotti, Shuffler,
Rody McElroy or see what kim Win Brady. Is that
likely that any of those guys win at the Players?
Speaker 3 (01:27:15):
No, the Players? Right, Well, Scotty finished at five hunder.
He's in the clubhouse already, it would be he's in
he twenty two. But I don't think. I don't think.
I think it's safe. But now we're so we're headed.
We're turning our focus to the snake pit. Oh yeah,
that's right, that's right. You know, you get a bear
trap earlier this month. Now you get the snake pit.
Speaker 2 (01:27:33):

with twenty two. Who has the most birdies on the
iconic seventeenth hole at the players in their career in
their career?
Speaker 3 (01:28:30):
Yeah, oh.
Speaker 8 (01:28:36):
Oh, well, I'd have to say, go go Scotty Scheffler.
Speaker 7 (01:28:45):
It is.
Speaker 2 (01:28:46):
It is not Scotty Scheffler. Scotty Scheffler is barely old
enough to have actually played in this tournament as many
times as the guy who holds the record. Right, So
this this guy has the guy who has the right.
You know, you look at Adam Scott, He's he's played
in this thing, you know, almost as many times as
Scottie Scheffler has been you know, during the guy who's
in his twenties has been alive. So we're we're looking
(01:29:08):
for somebody who's who's played a lot of the player
Championships you got to think about. And again, he might
be on the Champions Tour. He might be playing at
the Color Guard Classic eight five five two six zero

Speaker 2 (01:29:31):
Uh Bill, let's see if you're breaking out your broomstick
putter right now to drop this for a win?
Speaker 7 (01:29:38):
And Adam Scott's got the second.
Speaker 2 (01:29:41):
Adam Scott has the second. Who has the most? He's
got He's got twenty two on seventeen. Who's got the
most with twenty six? As a matter of fact, I
have no I'm gonna say George mcdale because he was
on the show and he's going recency buys. Oh Bill
in Peoria.

Speaker 2 (01:30:21):
Somebody got to the Google machine. All right, Bernard Longer,
who would you like next week in the Valspar Championship
to go up against Paton.
Speaker 8 (01:30:28):
Kazaire Islin Victor Hoblin playing.
Speaker 2 (01:30:35):
Victor Hoblin, the defending champions is in the field. Yes, sir,
you can have Victor.
Speaker 8 (01:30:42):
