Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, what's going on? It is hip Man with you
and you know it's happening on Tuesday at Bruce Street
Ice Sounds. We got Saliva Earshot the Founder featuring Austin
John Winkler from Hinder and I've got on the phone
with me right now, Oscar and Elise from Lila, like, Hey,
what's going on, guys, what's going on now? To be here?

(00:20):
I was listening to some of your songs and this
is this and I always compare. I always compare music
to everybody else. So when I was watching, especially when
I just finished watching Barely Human and I watched the
video with a single, I'm comparing you guys. It's a combination.
It's a mash up to meet and hopefully you take
this as a compliment of Corn with Evanescence.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Oh in my pockets for later. Thank you.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
That's a great compliment. That's super amazing. We're big fans
of Corn and Evanescence. I mean, they're amazing bands.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
So you guys are from Raleigh, North Carolina, and you
guys have been out on a lot of great tours
and then you recently just did a sold out international
tour with Biohazard and life of Agony across the UK
and Europe. How was that?

Speaker 2 (01:05):
That was absolutely incredible one of the most amazing experiences
we've had touring, and you're absolutely right. Sold out crowds
across ten countries over six weeks, fifteen hundred to two
thousand cap rooms playing warehouses. It was absolutely incredible.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
It was insane, like the we sold out the rich
in London and Brussels was sold out, we As was
sold out, and it could be able to experience the
crowds in Germany and Switzerland and Poland and Netherlands. I
mean it's just everywhere, Like was just absolutely insane.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
No, I hear crowds overseas are completely insane at shows,
you know, compared to not putting down the United States.
But I mean it's like chaotic from what I've heard
from bands that perform overseas. So tell me how's this
tour going so far with it with Saliva.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
Yeah, So the tour with Saliva and Earshot and the
Founder is a six week tour and it's basically, if
you could take us map, it's mainly the external perimeter
of the whole United States, just minus some of the
East Coast. But we had like it's we've basically gone
everywhere already and we only have four more shows left.

(02:15):
We have one in Albuquerque, New Mexico tomorrow, and then
we have three Texas states left and that's it. That
will be the end of this tour. And it's the
whole tour has been absolutely insane. I mean our band
is already very high energy, so like if you think
about it, Oscar and I we're like, we're like, I mean,
headbanging and we're climbing on stuff. There was one one

(02:38):
of our shows where we saw these like rafters inside
the crowd and he climbed up the rafter on the
right and I climbed up the rafter on the left
while we were in the middle of our into Nothing song.
So I mean we're very very high energy, just like
throwing down like our entire band. And yeah, it's been
a killer show so far.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
The crowds have been absolutely incredible. I mean every single night,
Clouds are come a good time how early to experience
all the bands and just bring in great energy every night.
So it's been an absolute pleasure to play a lot
of new areas for us and played them in Montana's
for the first time the Dakotas, so many new players,
so many new crowds. It's been amazing to see the reception.

(03:16):
It's been incredible, and.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
People have actually been coming to us saying that they've
been hearing us. Like we did a show at a
radio station for I think in Wisconsin, and people came
to that show saying, oh my god, we're so I'm
glad to play in Corpus Christy, you know, because we're
you know, we're talking with you and I've I've we've
already played in Corpus Christy back with but that with
a tray you. Yeah, so I'm really excited to come

(03:39):
back and just like you know, you know, yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
So Okay, So let's talk about the name Lilac. Okay,
it says you called it, you call it pronounced lilac.
But the way it's spelled it almost looks like it's
a Greek fraternity, the way you put it on a
sign or something like that. Where did you guys come
up with this?

Speaker 3 (03:57):
This?

Speaker 1 (03:57):
How to spell this lilac? The version of lilac.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
No, I think a lot of bands are actually jumping
on this train where they're using v's instead of a's.
Now like terraces and v's instead of a's, you know,
landmarks and d's instead of as. So I think we
just hopped on that train around the same time.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
It's like, to me, it reminds me of there's another
band that's out right now. When I first saw how
they spelled it, it was b I L L M
U R R I, and I was like, what what
is this? And they said it's Bill Murray.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Bill Murray, but they spelled it differently, spell it differently,
and I was like, oh, wow, that's actually kind of interesting.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
So yeah, so Lilac, I think it's it's really really cool.
So you have been to Texas before, so of course
I'm going to ask the obvious question, especially if you've
been around this area. What's your waterburger order?

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Oh my gosh, I didn't get a big night after
a long day. Whatever they'll put in front of you.
Pickles on everything he told us about a double quarter
pounder was written a quarter pounds.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
That's an obnoxious amount of pickles. I'm good. I don't
know why, but that's just how I Where.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
You guys are.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Where you guys are, pl at Brusters Street, their main
their main thing, that everybody loves there is their chicken
fried steak, so yeah, you might want to look into that.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
So okay, good to know. Absolutely. I lived in Dallas
for like a year, and I just I remember the
barbecue was insane, Like I just remember how amazing the
barbecue in Texas is, Like there's a Cadillac barbecue out
there in Dallas. That it was just it blew my mind,
the brisket. But yeah, big big fan of the barbecue
in Texas.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
So let's talk about Barely Human. The video. Holy crap,
it's it's oh my god, it's out of this world.
I mean, and it's and and I've seen some of
your other videos too. Whoever does your video production is
a genius.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
Thank you so much. Yeah, our past music videos like
Perfect Drug and Undertow and Into Nothing were actually done
by Scott Hansen out of Digital Thunderdome. He's out of Atlanta, Georgia.
But this past one, Barely Human, was with Jensen Noan
and Jensen. He's like renowned for his lit effects work
like some of the like his most recent work with

(06:03):
Falling in Reverse and eisnein Kills like has an Architect
even has like these giant tornadoes and huge like the
tsunamis of waves, so taking over ships, like the visual
effects work. He's just really well known for that. He's
just like unparalleled. And we needed to create this new
post apocalyptic world where, like you know, where all of

(06:26):
us are barely human, all of us are half human
half robot, you know, at just fighting and having this
war at the end of the world, and we needed
somebody to be able to really put our brains, you know,
in a video, and Jensen was was just the best.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
He was great.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
So tell me a little bit about because I got
told that your side project, I guess or your main
you do this, but you're also a hacker.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Yeah, yeah, that's actually my day job. So I'm a
I've been a computer hacker legally for companies since twenty fifteen.
Now I actually I run an entire Averasario Red team,
so I'm in charge of all malware and stealth operations,
and then I also run the Deidos attack operations. I'm

(07:09):
in charge of the security Penetration testing team, which is
basically a hacking team, but they don't they do less
stealth like so they're more noisy. I guess they don't
have to be stealthy about it. And then I'm also
in charge of all third party pen tests for a
major financial clearing firm for like the stock stock market,
like stocks options in futures. So yeah, I run all

(07:30):
hacking operations for that company. That's my day job, and
then I sing at nights. I'm a hacker by day
and a singer by night.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
And Oscar, I mean, what do you like to do
when you're not performing? What do you love to do?

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Oh my god, I am. I have a little bit
of watchou in every single thing I can think of.
But my main passion is my social media management. I
handle everything for the band, and I work with other
artists musicians to really just build an entire platform around
their vision. So that's really been my thing, is working

(08:02):
with other artists to help them see their visions through
on social media.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
Which reminds me, I saw some of your tiktoks. Oh well,
at least.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
You know that his tiktoks are you know good?

Speaker 3 (08:14):
You know, because all my formata, he definitely looks up
all the trends. You can't see what did you come across?

Speaker 2 (08:23):
What was it?

Speaker 1 (08:24):
You guys are Oh, it's like we're in the band
and and she started talking about death and destruction and
you're like, no, no, no, that's not what we talk about.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
No, no, no, no no.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
I thought that video so much.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
I love that video.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
I'm glad that you watched that one. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
So it's been such a creative endeavor finding new ways
to be creative, not just with our music, but getting
to like be part of the social media experience, create
new videos. I come up with new ideas all the time.
So that's been a huge creative outlet for me with
with the band as well.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
Yeah, I was just about to ask you, TikTok has
probably been a great marketing tool a lot of bands recently,
So yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Yeah, absolutely connecting with a whole new audience, collaborating with
other social media you know people. It's been incredible to
just find new avenues that are just like evolving. Right.
We're in a very different digital age that can be
seen that we discussed and fairly human, right. We are
just in a completely new world when it comes to

(09:19):
marketing and outreach and finding your audience, and TikTok has
been absolutely crucial, and that honestly all social media has. Wow.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
So I'm really looking forward to seeing you guys come
into town on Tuesday. If let's say somebody who's never
heard of you guys before, Let's say somebody is brand
new that's going to the show. What can we expect
when you guys jump on the stage.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Absolute madness, absolute craziness. We do come out as the
band opening the show for the night, but one hundred
percent we make that stage hours for thirty minutes.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
Yeah, there's a lot of like AI visuals. There's a
lot of like really great production that our keyboardist is
actually put together. He's not with us this tour, but
he's he's technology driven like I am. So we've added
a lot of technology visuals like to our set for
every single song. And like our entire band is just

(10:11):
very very high energy. So Oscar and I we have
like this push and pool just like the Katana fight
scene that you see in the Barely Human video. You'll
see him and I like we fight like we fight
on stage, We headbang on stage. We like get really
like really involved and emotional with the crowd. Yeah, everybody's
just very high energy. Sketty is like spinning around like

(10:32):
a crazy person, and yeah, everybody's everybody's gone Ham.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Okay, So I got one last question for you, and
I asked this to every single artist I have ever interviewed.
A lot of rock bands are from here, you know,
that are trying to make it in this business. My
question is to you, is what advice can you give
to local guys who want to take it to that
next step to become as popular as you guys?

Speaker 3 (10:56):
I mean, work your ass off, really own your craft, like,
write a lot of songs, and I think definitely you
network with people, you know, ask questions with the producers
that you're talking to. I think that booking agencies really
make a big difference with helping you get on really
good tours. So ask questions from your booking agents, your

(11:17):
PR representatives, your radio promo people, because all of them
have been in the business longer than you, right, And
so like the biggest thing is knowledge, and I think
just really you know, staying humble and learning from everyone
and networking with everyone, make friends, and just show your
art to as many people as you can.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Really treat it as a business, right. I think that
is the biggest focus for us has been like this
is an organization we're building that we want to grow,
that we each put in hard work during the day,
after hours, weekends, NonStop grind to like legitimately see our
vision through. So create a clear vision for where you
want to go and then treat it as a business

(11:57):
and grind out.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
Exactly like that the hell out on stage, you know.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Like performances, Yeah, live important.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Live shows are so important, not only just to connect
to the crowd, but just really like making that live
show something that is unforgettable for everyone. It should play
every show like it's your last, you know, don't don't
just go up there and stand in a corner. You know.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Well, well, Oscar atleast, I really appreciate you guys taking
the time to talk with me today. Looking forward to
seeing you guys on Tuesday. It's happening at Bruces Street
Ice House. To buy tickets, go to Brewsterstreet dot net
and make sure you go find Lilac all over your
social media outlets, including YouTube TikTok. They're everywhere you really,

(12:42):
I would really highly recommend you go check out their tiktoks.
They're hilarious. Uh, thanks a lot, guys for taking the time,
and I'm looking forward to seeing you guys on Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (12:51):
Hell yeah, I can't wait to meet you.
