Los Angeles, Orange County, IE in the Valley. This is to
Wallace Sharp and you're listening to kfI AM six forty Soul Cal Saturday on
demand on the iHeartRadio app. EveryIt's so Cal Saturday. Now if I
(00:21):
to Wallace Sharp is on the showis so Cal Saturday. This this is
so calson It's so Cal Saturday,Saturday Saturday and Saturday Saturday Saturday Saturday.
(01:00):
Word is a word. This issoul Cal KFI AM six forty live everywhere
on the iHeartRadio app and Stevenson Ranchfor Dugo City, Hyland and Angelus Oakes.
This is soul Cal Saturday. I'myour host, Twala Sharp, welcoming
you to another Soul Cal Saturday,Small Business Saturday, Spotlight. And today
(01:23):
today is a very special day, especially if you have kids. I want
you to listen closely because if youhave kids, then you know all too
well how hard it is to entertainthem when you are having a party,
be it a birthday party or justa summer get together, because yeah,
summer's officially here. What better wayto entertain them than with a DJ.
(01:49):
Yes, kids party, DJ,in fact, is a DJ that will
bring a pro DJ sound system,Ken Fridley music, bubble machine and amazing
colorful lights to your special event foryour kids. They are available for school
events, birthdays, and anywhere whereyou need an interactive DJ for kids from
preschool, elementary, middle school agesand beyond. Kids Party DJ brings the
(02:14):
fun. They will have kids dancing, laughing, and enjoying every moment.
And Kids Party DJ can keep kidsof all ages moving with a variety of
music, games, fun, interactivedances and more. They have light shows
that will keep kids attention and loadsof bubbles to chase and pop. But
let me not waste all this timetelling you about it when I have the
(02:38):
owner, DJ pat D joining usto introduce us to Kids Party DJ.
DJ pat D. How are youdoing today? Good sir, I'm doing
great. I'm gearing up for agig actually today in Huntington Beach. So
I am happy to be on yourshow, Juala fantastic. I love it.
Okay. So when you are gearingup for a party, what is
(03:00):
the mindset that you go into,Because the first thing I think of is
you are competing with the likes ofa parent bringing say a clown or an
animal petting show or something else tothe party. Or you may say,
ah, no disrespect, but that'slame. I keep the party going.
(03:20):
What do you go through? Whatis your preparation that helps you get ready
to keep the kids going well toa while up prior to the gig,
I get an event planner form filledout by the host, so it could
be a parent, it could bean event planner. So I get all
the information, all the details onthe age range of the kids, if
there's gonna be an outdoor event, indoor event, and then I have a
(03:45):
music list, and then that willgive me prepped for what I'm facing.
You know, some of the kids, like the kids Bob, some more
sophisticated. They would rather have thetop forty versions. Of course, Queen
and we tried to just come outthere with a good attitude. I love
it now. I know how hardit is to entertain kids. I work
(04:08):
with kids, and it is reallyhard to keep kids attention. What has
prepared you to be a kids party? DJ? I mean, are you
a parent that just said, youknow what, I entertain my kids?
Why don't I take this on theroad, I mean, what got you
into being a kids party? DJ? Well, let me take you back
to Peoria, Illinois circa the eighties. I grew up in Peoria. I
(04:32):
would go to the teen clubs, you know, they have a teen night
at a nightclub and I love theDJ and I heard her mixing up there.
So I ended up picking up aradio shack mixer to pioneer belt drive
turntables and that got me going. And then circa nineteen eighty five that came
to California and actually I used tobe part of the actually the first ever
(04:56):
mixed show DJ on KGGI in ninetyninety one. So are wow, yeah
wow, Oh you go way back? Oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah ok
gg how yeah you're part of theradio family, Yes, sir, wow.
So this is something that you havebeen doing for the longest and have
(05:17):
now reinvented yourself to being a kidsDJ. What is the biggest thrill of
getting kids out on the dance floor? It is the excitement on their faces,
twala. It is the parents havinga time of their own, you
know, trying and enjoy the partyand not having to you know, play
(05:39):
the music, do the game.So I do everything I do, the
pool of Hoo contest, the freezedance, we do some interactive dances and
just get out there with the kidsand have a great time. Wow.
Okay, so this is when yousay interactive. You are merging your djaying
with all of the fun kid gamesthat we know and love. At a
(06:02):
party for you, I'd say, what is the hardest part about getting kids?
Because kids are relatively shy me,you know, it's hard getting kids,
you know, to interact as itis nowadays because every kid's got some
piece of technology in their hands. How do you break the ice? How
do you get kids out on theactual dance floor and just having fun?
(06:24):
Well, I guess it would dependon the age, Troup. I'll give
you an example. I do amonthly party for ABC Childcare out in Temecula,
and they booked me out once amonth. And they're two different centers,
and I'm driving up there loading myequipment and they have like a fence
facing you know, the area whereI need to go into. And I
have these kids yelling DJ Patt backyou know who I am. I feel
(06:50):
like, what the heck is goingon here? Do I need? I
get more of a fan club withthe little kids. I absolutely love it.
I hear the joy in your voice. I can tell how much you
love it. How hard is itkeeping current with making sure you've got the
(07:13):
absolute super cleanest music out there? How hard is it finding this music?
Well, it would take like asuper scrubber to clean up a lot of
these songs, right, So Itry to be mindful of the artists and
the message they have, and ofcourse, you know, if the parents
request stuff, I have to adhereto their recommendations. But I have like
(07:40):
Baby Shark dance remixes, and Iactually create my own little remixes of songs.
So I kind of like, wow, Like, let me think of
we're going on a bear hunt andI'll drop it behind a house track.
I'll take a blippy song and youknow, extract the vocal and then drop
it on some kind of instrumental track. But it's what makes it fun absolutely.
(08:03):
I mean, that is a talentonto its own to have that type
of musical background and that type ofknowledge base to say, you know what,
I can take Baby Shark and flipit over this new Kendrick Lamar track
and the kids will just be outthere doing it. I love it.
(08:24):
Now. If a parent wants toget a hold of you and book you
for their very next party. Howdo they go about doing that? How
do they find you? Well,it could just go to our website.
Kids PARTYDJ dot us. Just goto there and that actually will link you
to my main hub. I actuallyhave a mobile DJ service that handles the
(08:46):
parties for all ages. So it'llgo to Jackfactory dot com, which has
been in business since eighty nine, and once they go there, they can
find out all the social media, they can check out videos, they can
check out previous events, and we'lltake it from there and contact them.
I absolutely love it. I lovewhat you do. I think that when
(09:07):
you find your calling, it's notwork anymore. It is literally just you
doing something where you can hardly believeyou're getting paid to do it. I
salute you, DJ pat D.I know you've got a gig to get
to today and I hope you absolutelyturn it out and wear those kids out,
because I know the parents got tolove you when you're tiring their kids
(09:28):
out after a day of dancing.WELLWORA will get you out there one day
and maybe we can have you asthe guests them. See. I love
it. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. DJ pat D the owner DJ of
Kids Party DJ, where they bringa pro DJ setup to your event.
(09:50):
I don't care if it's a birthdayparty, a school party, just a
party party for kids from kindergarten allthe way up through middle school and beyond.
His Party DJ is who you needto have on your roller decks to
keep your next kid party going.DJ, Pat D thank you for joining
us today and introducing us to kidParty DJ. You're listening to soul Cal
(10:16):
Saturday with Tawala Sharp on demand fromkf I Am six forty KF five Am
(10:45):
six forty live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app in the West Hills, part
of Ranch, Twin Peaks and FortIrwin. Yes, this is soul col
Saturday. I'm your host, TwilerSharp. Taking a look at some other
business related news, you know, after our salute to small business, makes
(11:09):
sense to look at some other thingshappening in the realm of business, or
at least well, Okay, thereis a new program or a new initiative
in Ontario where they are offering brickand mortar retail space. Forget this a
(11:30):
dollar a month. Yes, entrepreneursin Ontario are taking advantage of this pop
up retail program. Charging a dollara month rent for brick and mortar retail
space. This is a program thatwas launched by the City of Ontario as
a compliment to its Downtown Ontario Activationstrategy, which first start taking applications.
(11:54):
I believe it is the beginning ofthe month, like the beginning of this
month, and so far there areat least two businesses that have already taken
up residents in Ontario. One isa craft shop, the Craft's Collective,
and the other is something else.I'm sorry there's another business. Two businesses,
(12:20):
Okay, but the point of isto me that is very interesting and
this is something that they're doing totry to help increase foo foot traffic and
of course increase the business opportunities forentrepreneurs out there. Is by making this
space or having this space within thecity where individuals can open up anything from
(12:46):
a home goods and furniture store toyou know, a boutique, to a
clothing source. I mean just justall types of things where for just one
dollar you are able to to getthis brick and mortar like an actual physical
location. They also add things likeWi Fi and utilities into this program.
(13:11):
And again, this pilot program isoffering these retail spaces for a dollar a
month. And now, yes itis an Ontario but why not? Why
not Ontario? And as a matterof fact, let's see super Producer Kla,
if you could put this up onour website, so if we have
any entrepreneurs listening who would like totake advantage of this, this to me
(13:35):
is perfect, This is perfect forwhat we do. And this program is
what is the name of the program? Okay, Super Producer Kayla's going to
look up the name of the program. Also something that is coming to well,
it's going to affect small businesses orit will be if it gets on
(13:58):
the ballot. They're looking to adda half sent sales tax onto every cell
in southern California to tackle homelessness. And yeah, you know, on the
surface, I'm I'm all about differentways and different means at at raising funds
(14:18):
to tackle homelessness. It can't alwaysbe on the city or the state.
Sometimes, especially for those of uswho are like not in my backyard,
or we say well what can Ido? Well, this is what we're
going to do. We are goingto be hit with a half sent sales
tax, which isn't a lot overallthat goes towards this measure to help fight
(14:43):
homelessness. This measure would focus onmaking housing more affordable, increasing mental health
services, substance abuse treatment, substanceabuse treatment centers, everything like that.
I mean all types of ways wherethe littlest, the littlest of out of
money, he can go a longway. So I it's not it's not
(15:05):
up and on the valley yet,but it is in the in the running.
They're looking at getting it on aboutthis would be uh the measure h
tax. So if you see that, just know that that's what it is
about. It is about adding ahalf cent sales tax to all sales in
southern California to benefit or go towardsfunding for homeless programs. And in Pasadena,
(15:31):
Uh, you know my hometown dataRascos Roscos is clothing. I just
found this out. I think wejust got to talk back super producer,
Kayla, thank you for bringing usto my attention. The Roscos on Lake
Street near it. It's in betweenI believe Orange Grove and what is that
(15:54):
villa? Maybe? Yeah, theRoscos is closing town. I love that
Roscos. Believe it or not,Okay, and someone can correct me if
you want, But this is theRoscos where Leslie Jones from Saturday Night Live
fame. While she was getting herstarting and coming up as a comedian performing
at the ice House, right whereour very own Heather Brooker has performed.
(16:17):
Leslie Jones used to be a waitressat this Roscals, I mean this Roscos.
Look, if you don't know anythingabout Roscos, I don't know what
rock you've been living under. ButRosco's House of Chicken and Waffles is a
staple in the community, and reallytrue, the lines for this place would
still be around the corner. SoI don't know how this is shutting down,
but man, it's supposed to beshutting down tomorrow. This makes me
(16:41):
very very sad. Thirty years thirtyyears I remember going when this Roscos first
opened up, Me and a bunchof my friends. We held a business
meeting. We're like twenty something yearsold. We were trying to start a
T shirt business. We called itinto the one ten. We had a
line of clothing that was a Pasadenaclothing line, into the one ten Clothing,
(17:04):
and we had our first business meetingat Roscos. But man, so
many memories at this at this Roscosand and I am shocked to know that
it's closing down. I mean, maybe on the way home, I'm gonna
have to stop by and get aSkull Special, maybe a Natalie Special.
(17:26):
Choices, Choices, Choices, butthis is the last time I'm gonna be
able to make these choices. Wow, Rosco's. Look, I thirty years
that this has been a staple inthe city. And you know, I
guess all good things must come toan end. But to the to the
family of Roscoe's, Pasadena, look, I want to just send all my
(17:51):
love and wish you all well andwhatever it is you do next, because
your restaurant has meant so much tous in the city of Pasadena. This
is shocky. I'm kind of takingaback by this costcos Come on, all
right, Kit, We're gonna haveto put in some orders when we go
to break. Coming up on theother side, though, we are going
(18:11):
to take a look at some thingsto do in so Cow. So don't
you go nowhere, keep it righthere. You're listening to Soul col Saturday
with Tawalla Sharp on demand from KFIAM six forty I've Everwhere on the iHeartRadio
(18:32):
app in New Hall Mount Washington,Sugarloaf in Rightwood. This is soul cal
Saturday. I'm your host, WallerShark taking a look at a few things
to do here in the south Land. Santa Monica Pride is in full effect
right now. Thurstreet Promenade will beilluminated with rainbow lights during this citywide celebration
(18:53):
of the LGBTQ plus community parties kickingoff. Kicked off today and it's going
till eight o'clock. More information canbe found at Simpride dot com. Oh
over at the Hollywood Bowl. Lovethe Hollywood Bowl. I'm going to the
Hollywood Bowl on the twenty night,so next Saturday, after the show,
(19:17):
going to see the Roots and friends, the Roots and Friends, So it's
the Roots. Common Queen Latifa BlackSheep is going to be there. Who
else, Diggable Planets, I mean, it is a who's who of old
school hip hop going and celebration ofmy son's eighteenth birthday. Yes, my
(19:38):
son will be turning eighteen on Tuesday. So we're going to the Hollywood Bowl.
That's that's next Saturday. But I'mreally jealous of that Twilight. Oh
Heather, you and I are.It must be an amazing venue. It's
always so much traffic around the HollywoodBall I try to avoid it at all
costs, and people walking, andyes, yeah, I gotta I gotta
(19:59):
get to one of those shows there. It's always something going on, and
there must be another pride event goingon in Hollywood today too. I think
because Kowango was closed, Hollywood Boulevardwas closed, I had to do so
many detours and in traffic going on. So there's a lot of pride events
going on around so cold, Iknow, and I only have the one,
so now I feel bad. Checkout Hollywood just drive through a let
(20:19):
us drive through. Let us knowhow to talk about what's going on there.
The road closed? Oh yeah,no ya, Hollywood Bowl got to
go there. I think they're doinga Henry Mancini performance kind of thing right
now. But anytime something's going onwith the Bowl, you gotta go and
check out stuff. I love MichaelBubla, He's going to be there too,
he's performing. Yes, I lovehim. Find out more Hollywood Bowl
(20:42):
dot com. Huntington Beach, Imean, why not. Anytime you can
go to Hunting Beach for any reasonwhatever. It's a beautiful, beautiful trip.
But right now at the post.Yeah, they renovated the Laria restaurant
at the Pace Hotel and Spots. So now you can go to the newly
(21:02):
renovated restaurant and it's like the landto see driving menu. It's going to
be sounds like going around with goodtime, sexy, real sexy, sounds
like a date night. Uh.I'm gonna make an admission right now.
Please do not hate me, butI do not watch baseball. I don't
watch baseball, but I know rightnow it's going down. Dodgers Angels they're
(21:25):
playing this weekend, and that's anotherreason why the freeways are shacked. That
is another reason. I mean, this is major right here. Dodgers Angels,
crosstown rivalry. They're both from here, Dodgers and like the LA Dodgers
and the LA Angels or is itanother I know you don't know baseball,
it's the it's the Angels also lA and LA. It's what is it
(21:45):
the Freeway Series? Yeah, sothe Freeway Series is going down and that
is major. So that's also shuttingthings down. And then if you're into
it, there's a watermelon festival.I'm not really into it like that,
but the twenty second edition of theCalifornia Watermelon Festival kicked off this weekend at
(22:06):
Hanson Damn Soccer Field in Silmar. This year's festival will feature all you can
eat watermelon for all attendees and yeah, okay, if you're into it,
find out more Watermelonfest dot com.And heading back over to Pasadena real quick.
The Chalkfest. Oh, the PasadenaChalkfest and art Walk. It is
(22:26):
absolutely beautiful. It's held right overby in front of the Pasadena Convention Center.
That's where they do like American Idoland an America's Got Talent and a
lot of things filmed there. Butright out there at the Pasale which is
like the outdoor mall right in frontof there and right around the convention Center
(22:48):
entrance and the walkway there, theChalkfest. It is going down. I
mean, this is beautiful, thisart that they create using chalk, and
it's just something to go see.Take in the sites. Do it for
the GRAM. I saw some clipson the news while we were while we
were on commercial break and the artthat they made out of chalk. I
can't believe that that's chalk that they'reusing. Like the talent is unreal.
It's definitely worth checking it out. It's not what it's not. It's not
(23:11):
watercolor pain, it's chalk and themost beautiful thing about it is it just
washed its way so they can justcool swoosh it down. So, if
you get an opportunity, head toPasadena check out the chalk Walk, and
then head on up to Roscoe's Houseof Chicken Waffles and get yourself Ato gold
meal. Maybe see if you cansit down there and support them as they're
closing their doors. Oh man, they're still breaking my art. Rosco save
(23:37):
is and so but it is.Uh. I'm gonna give you some news
to feel better. All right?Okay, Well, since I won't be
here next weekend'n tell you what areyou doing? I have another show coming
up. Okay, save it,save it. I can't tell us about
it. Oh we come back?Okay. I just got really excited.
