Saturday, Saturday to Saturday. Theword, he's the word. This is

(01:04):
sol JFI AM six forty live everywhereon the Ihearted Radio app and locking y
out of Valencia, Riverside, andright here in Burbank, this is soul
Cal Saturday. I'm your host,Twala Sharp. And as you know,
I am a super hardcore, diehard nerd. And so when I tell

(01:26):
you how excited I am that SanDiego Comic Con is returning next week,
trust and believe I have goosebumps justthinking about it, even though even though
I cannot go, but if youare going, you absolutely positively have to
check out the twenty seventh annual SuperheroKung Fu Extravaganza panel because they are honoring

(01:53):
a martial arts action legend, anindividual who I promise you you may not
know his name, but you haveseen his face in countless films over the
past three decades. This man isa action hero legend, winner of over
thirty international awards, and he isgoing to be there to answer all of

(02:16):
your questions at this meet and greet. I am talking about the one,
the only, the Kung Fu brotherhimself, mister Ron Hall, who joins
us today on soul cal Saturday totake us inside his career and this panel
at San Diego Comic Con. BrotherRon Hall, how are you doing today?
Good sir? Talala Shop? Thatwas some introduction? How much do

(02:39):
I owe you? Man? Look, all I need you to do for
me is to continue doing what you'vebeen doing. Good sir, I'm telling
you. Look your career across filmand television, being a choreographer, being
an actor. Just you're that guythat if you watch anything having to do

(03:00):
with Marshal Arts, you're like, hey, man, that's that dude,
that's that guy. You're just yourdemand. How did you get into martial
arts in the first place? Iguess I can say that my life has
kind of two pathways, meaning thatI have a martial arts pathway and then
I have a filmmaking pathway. I'ma martial art beginning. I'm from Washington,
DC, and I lived in aplace called Eastland Gardens, which was

(03:24):
set between two major project centers inWashington, DC. If you looked at
nightline on the news in the seventiesand the eighties, you probably saw that
neighborhood all the time. Well, every day that I went to school,
kids would harass me. You wouldn'tbelieve how bad they've harassed me. I'll
give an example. Kids used todo things like set my desk on fire,

(03:46):
set my books on fire, hangme out the window, chase me
after school, run into my houseafter they've chased me home. So that
got me into being curious about martialarts. But my very first exposure to
marsh for Wards was my mother usedto send me and my brother to bed
around six o'clock and we talked toabout nine or ten o'clock. And one
night I heard something in the livingroom and I heard some screaming and some

(04:10):
crashing, and me and my brotherwe crawled into the living room and we
was under the table and we lookedat TV and we saw this guy in
a suit and he was destroying thisroom, and it was something I had
never even thought about ever. Ijust it just looked amazing and I just
was captivated by And that person happenedto be Bruce Lee. And the movie

(04:30):
was Marlowe with James Garner. SoI saw that movie and I was really
just captivated by it, and itstayed in my mind. But I didn't
know anything about martial arts, didn'tknow anything about movies anything like that.
So maybe about a year or twolater, I had a friend his father
took all of us to see adouble feature of Fist Fury and Lady Kung
Fu, and my mind was blown. You know what's fascinating is today is

(04:55):
the fifty first day of Bruce Lee'spassing, and his influence in the world
is as strong as ever. AndI said I would mention the two guys
who made me be sure to saythat is Malcolm Balkwell and seton chain leave
today. He died fifty one yearsago. Wow, you know, so
since vers Le has died, youknow, we have Jackie Chan, we
have Jet Lee, we got ScottAtkins, we have Tony Jab you know,

(05:19):
a host of martial art fighters thathave graced the screen and influenced pop
culture, and you know, inHollywood so much so that almost anytime you
see anyone fighting movies, they're doingmartial arts, absolutely, and that is
what brings you to not only gettinginto martial arts. But how did you

(05:41):
make that transition into getting into film. Well, I always wanted to be
in movies, but like I said, I really didn't have any avenue to
you know, approach it. Ididn't know anybody in movies. I didn't
know how to get movies. Youknow, there was nothing telling me how
to get movies. It just wasa remote dream. I went to the
military at a very young age.I was in the military for five years,

(06:02):
and when I got out, therewere two actors, a guy named
George Chung who runs Black Belt magazine, and another stuntman named Chuck Jeffries,
and he's an excellent martial artist, and they had a seminar about how to
get into movies. So I wentto the seminar and they basically gave me
a basic road map that I followed. About a year later, I moved

(06:25):
to Los Angeles and I happened toget signed by the same man who started
Van Dam's career. He was aproducer by the name of Marc Desal.
He started the movies Blood Sport andKickboxer, and he signed me up to
do movies. And that is howyou got into films like Triple Impact,
Bloodspoar, Two Vampire Assassins and othersthat put you in front of the camera.

(06:47):
What got you behind the camera doingfight choreography, directing and producing martial
arts films on your own? Well, when I practiced martial arts, I
always practiced it as if I wasin a martial arts movie, and I
was always criticized by you know,I would take kung throu from people,
karate from people, and they wouldgo, hey, this is not a

(07:08):
martial arts movie. And when Istarted doing films that same criticism. Back
then, the fighting was very different. It was we used to call it
the John Wayne style where people wouldmake these big punches and you know,
slow movements, and I wanted todo like a backslip over your hand if
you threw it at me too slow. So what happened was people recognized that

(07:30):
I was able to create action sequencesthat looked pretty good on my own and
every movie that I did. Infact, if you see any movie that
I'm in, I probably has donethe choreography on it, Because I think
when you're doing action in film, your main priority is is that you want
to entertain people and you want tomake people believe that you are actually fighting

(07:53):
right. You know, it's notabout realism. It's kind of like a
hyper realism. So excitement has tobe built in there, story has to
be built in there, a wildfactor has to be built in there that
people should be surprised when they seeyou doing this type of match. Absolutely,
and with all of that packed intosome thirty years now of being in

(08:16):
martial arts being in films, tellus about your involvement. At the twenty
seventh Annual Superhero Kung Fu Extravaganza, pannal I did a film called Shadow three.
Another gentleman whose name is Robert Samuelsand his co director of the film
Shadow fitsis Robert Jefferson Bosley. I'veknown each other for about thirty years.

(08:39):
I was making movies in the Philippines. He was living in Hong Kong.
Actually, if you know who SamuHung is, Samo Hung was his mentor.
You know, he's worked with YinWu Ping, and I always joked
that his photo album was the kungFu Facebook before Facebook ever started. That
Bobby knew everybody you've ever seen inany kung fu movie ever. So we

(09:00):
built a friendship thirty years ago andwe've tried since then to work on a
project. And he just happened tohave a project that he thought I was
right for and he brought me out. And since that time that we shot
it, we've won over thirty internationalawards for this film. And now on
Thursday, July twenty fifth, atSan Diego Comic Con in Room six A,

(09:24):
you will be hosting a meet andgreet where individuals can come meet you
and really just learn from you becauseyou have an encyclopedic knowledge of just martial
arts and action films. What allbeyond that can attendees expect from this meet
and greet, Well, you willsee some exclusive footage from the film.
You'll also be able to see otheractors that you might recognize. I think

(09:48):
Cynthia roth Rock is one of thepeople that will probably be there, so
you'll see other Marshal Art performers aspart of the panel. I absolutely love
it. And I know have someother projects in the works that you have
coming up. What all is onthe roster for the rest of this year
and beyond. Well, right nowI'm putting together project with Fred Williamson from

(10:11):
three to hard Way. I've alwayswanted to I've always wanted to work with
Fred Williamson and the film is calledChinatown Gladiators and it can be described as
the terminator after the Warriors. Ilove it. I love it. So,
you know, like I said,Fred Williamson is just one of my
heroes. And you know, Ihad an opportunity to work with Dolomite.

(10:33):
You know, me and Dolomite workedtogether for eight years, so a lot
of those black heroes, they reallymade an impression on me. And actually
one of my focuses is to,you know, highlight the African American presence
in martial arts films, because theAfrican American audience was the audience that these
films first took a foothold in theUnited States. And unfortunately, you know,

(10:56):
since I've been in films, youknow the presence of Africans Americans in
films is very little. You know, we have an actor, right now
Michael joh White, who's excellent, you know, does great work. He's
basically the only person who's doing martialart action films. You know, where's
the one female that we need doingmartial art action films. So that's what
I'm committed to to bringing a visionof just more African Americans to participate in

(11:20):
marshal art films because I think, you know, that would just give it
a different flavor. Because you know, if you look at culture, you
look at things like the Wu Tangclan, you look at things like you
know, come through Kenny. Youknow, black people really have adapted martial
arts into the African American culture whereit's just kind of like in the DNA

(11:41):
of American Black American culture. AndI want an opportunity to express that on
screen. And you are good, sir. Where can our listeners follow your
journey and keep up with you?You can sign me on any social media.
I'm on Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram. You can look for
Wrong Haul or come from Bro RonHall, come through Bro and you'll find

(12:03):
me on the web. He isRon Hall, actor, writer, fight
choreographer, director and producer of martialarts action films. I am telling you
he is a Bona five legend andhe is hosting a meet and greet this
coming Thursday, July twenty fifth atSan Diego Comic Con, Room six A

(12:24):
B there or B Square. BrotherRon Hall, thank you for joining us
today and taking us through a littlebit of your journey. Good sir walda
shop you know. Thank you verymuch for the interview, and I hope
to see you guys in the movies. Thank you very much. This is

Cal Saturday with Tawala Sharp on demandfrom KFI AM six forty kf I AM
six forty Live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app in Maywood, Mint Canyon,

(13:09):
Win That Cu and Big Bear City. This is soul Gal Saturday. I'm
your host Twalla Sharp, and Iam so mad I'm not going to be
able to attend Ron Hall's seminar orpanel at San Diego Comic Con. I
love San Diego Comic Con. Imean, for how many how many years

(13:31):
did Moe and I get to broadcastlive at comic cons and several times,
you know, but I was goingto comic Con since I think my first
comic con was maybe eighty seven. It was the first time I went down
to maybe eighty seven, maybe eightyeight, But going down to San Diego
Comic Con for the longest time andit is just again it is nerd Mecca.

(13:54):
Just a gathering of some of thegreatest nerd minds, comic creators,
authors, pencilless, actors for backin the day, and just some of
the panels that they have on creatingcomics and teasing some of the projects that
are coming out. It is justit's a spectacle. It is something to

(14:16):
see all the booths that they have, they're previewing things that are coming out.
Vendors, they're selling some of themost hard to find collectibles. It's
the greatest event for all of nerdkind. And we haven't been down there
in a minute. I'm with youin solidarity on this. I am in
here geeking out myself because I amalso a huge comic con like fan and

(14:39):
nerd and I am also very sadto be missing it this year. It's
so heartbreaking. Up. I'm withyou in solidarity, my friend. It
is it is thank you. Wegot to stand together because man it is.
Look, I love it. Iwant to broadcast live down there again.
I know it's been such a hardtime just organizing a broadcast again,

(15:00):
but we will be back down andI think now more than ever. One
of the great things about Comic Conis you really don't even have to have
a badge anymore. It's gone beyondjust what's going on in the convention center
right now, the Comic Con Plaza, it's just it is full of activations
that pretty much anyone can go downand take part in it. I mean

(15:22):
right now. They have coming upthe fifteenth, so it's happening now through
the twenty eighth. They have Julian'sAuctions spotlight series Harry Potter and Other Heroes,
where if you are a collector, you can register for Julian's Auctions Harry
Potter and Other Heroes auction to getyour hands on some one of a kind

(15:43):
swag. This is happening at twoto one three one Pan American Plaza in
San Diego and admission to the auctionis twenty five dollars. They have the
Herd Universe Fashion Show on July twentyfifth. That is that the Manchester Grand
Hyatt one Marketplace, San Diego, where Mattel is going to be back at

(16:07):
Comic Con with their Geek Chic HerUniverse fashion show hosted by founder Ashley Eckstein
and actor Michael James Scott, withthe line of some twenty five pre selective
designer showing off their work. Thisis going to be a fantastic event because
because Mattel's also giving away products likeUno and hot wheels, and this show

(16:30):
starts at six o'clock, first come, first serve, so this is just
free, first come, first serve. Again, you don't have to have
a Comic Con badge. There's anart show happening at the Manchester Grand Hyatt
the twenty fifth through the twenty eighth. The show is from eleven am to
eight pm on Thursday, nine amto eight pm on Friday, and nine

(16:52):
am to six pm on Saturday andSunday, one Marketplace in San Diego.
Just all types of original sculptures, painting, jewelry and more from your favorite
favorite comic properties. There is acostplay repair station, so if you are
down there, okay you're a costplayer and your costume rips, tears,

(17:14):
or you have a prop that breaks. The twenty fifth through the twenty seventh,
at three to three to zero ParkBoulevard and San Diego, the Costplay
Repair Station will be open. Theyare going to be helping you with sewing
supplies, adhesives, three D printers, and more to make your Costplay pop
even more. And that's gonna beopen from ten am to four pm Thursday

(17:37):
through Saturday and one to four onSunday. So so much happening down at
San Diego Comic Con where you again, you don't even need a badge.
I'm going to have super producer Kaylapost some of these things on the website,
because look, it is it issomething to see. It is something
to see in Heather, You areabsolutely right, it is ugh it is

(17:59):
painful not going. Let me askyou this. Are you a wait outside
of haul H guy? Are youthe one of the ones that gets up
early and waits in line? Oh? Hell no, hell no. You
know what And every time we've broadcasteddown there, we broadcast right at the
restaurant right across from Hall eight's likeright in front, and so we see
the people lining up and all wethink is you funky sob You're out there

(18:21):
all day just full of nerd funkand that is a nasty, stinky funk.
Ah nerd funk is so nasty,it's it's dirtier than this soul Cow
beach water. Oh, nerds,we are also a filthy, filthy bunch
because days on end, no bathing, cosplay, costumes on costumes in the
heat, walking around. Then theytake it into the floor and there's less.

(18:47):
You're just shoulder to shoulder with likeall the nerds. But honestly,
there's nothing like it. There's nothinglike it, nothing better. Coming up
after this break, we are goingto be talking to our soul Cow Sad
Today Small Business Saturday Spotlight guests. We are going to be speaking with aria
Elon and find out what Ariya Elonproducts are and more so, don't you

(19:10):
go nowhere. You're listening to soulCal Saturday with Taula Sharp on demand from
KFI AM six forty, KFI AMsix forty live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app

(19:32):
in Malibu, Lakeview, Terrorists,Westmont, and Baker. This is soul
Cal Saturday. I'm your host,Twalla Sharp, welcoming you to another soul
Cal Saturday, Small Business Saturday SpotlightToday. I want to introduce you to
Ariya Elon. Ariya Elon offers beautifulartwork created by her daughter Gramming Scholarship recipient

(19:55):
Eden Edwards on various merchandise like babyonesies, children and adult T shirts,
phone cases, and everything else youcan imagine. And ten percent of all
sales of aria Alan product goes tothe Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and Katrina's Club
to promote peace and feed children.Welcoming now to the program, the owner,

(20:19):
the creator, the founder, evenMiss Ariya Elon herself. How are
you doing today? I'm doing fantastic. That's the that's true I've ever had
in my life. Thank you, well, I am glad to do it.
It is my absolute pleasure. Andtell me what got you into creating

(20:40):
these specially crafted pieces of work inthe first place, Like what drew you
to doing this? Well, allpraises due to the creator forgifting me with
my very talented, special daughter Eden. And she is the artist who has
done the illustrations. She's done myalbum cover. I am a singer,

(21:07):
songwriter and award winning poet for mypoem A World without Borders, And a
lot of people believe erroneously that autisticchildren and autistic people are somehow slow,

(21:29):
or they even use vile words likestupid. But I'm here to tell you
I have lived experienced that it's theexact opposite. You just have to find
out what they have a passion for, encourage that, and the sky is
the limit. So yeah, sheis what got me involved with the artwork

(21:52):
because I wanted to give her aplatform. And you know all too well
that when it comes to autism awareness, that holds a very special place in
my heart. As while I amnot here, I do work with children
with autism at the Autism Academy, and I know for a fact that children
with autism are just children who processthe world differently. They process the world

(22:17):
at a pace that is unlike youand I. That some children may process
information at hyper speeds and some mayhave to maul over information at a slower
pace. But it is literally justa process of learning and expressing themselves differently.
And I love that you have founda way to bring your daughter Eden's

(22:38):
work to life through these products. How long does it take from the point
when you receive an order? Withall of that said about how children with
autism process the world, how longis it from the point when you may
receive a custom order for something tothe point where you are able to manufacturer.

(23:00):
Well that's why I tell people upfront, you have to exercise patience because
this is not Amazon, you know, or something where it's over in China
and they have a factory mass producing. Every piece is hand work, hand

(23:22):
drawn, hand painted with love. And whether it is a T shirt,
whether they're sneakers, you know, vans, and you want something, it's
definitely worth the weight. So it'sa ten. Sometimes she can create something

(23:44):
and it's a couple of days.Sometimes, you know, I tell her,
I'm like, honey, you area perfectionist, because it might take
two weeks, three weeks, youknow. So I really am upfront with
people when it comes to that becauseit's not only supporting the business, but

(24:07):
the underlying causes. Because I amdefinitely a woman of faith. My late
father was a pastor for fifty yearsand he taught us to tithe. He
taught us to help people. Andthat's why I catched that on to her
that everything that we do. Wehave these nonprofits, these charities, for

(24:33):
example, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, A lot of people have never heard
of them. They're right here whereI live Santa Barbara County, Okay,
and their thing is waging peace, but it's very diplomatic, so they don't
care about you know, all thefan care of people knowing who they are

(24:57):
and which conference they've been to,which leader they've spoken to is the results.
Because we are living in an agewhere anything, you know, could
happen at any time. So that'sone of the reasons that I don't even
have to tell you about Katerina's Clubor any of these other types of wonderful

(25:22):
programs that help feed people, becausethat is just basic. You know,
if you say that you have anylove in your heart, then that agathi
love will definitely want you, youknow, to help others. And that's
basic, you know, housing andfood. You can't get any more basic

(25:47):
than that. And so it is, and so it will be. I
absolutely love your mission. I lovewhat you are doing with your daughter,
and I love the fact that eachand every piece is as original as your
daughter herself. This is something thatis coming from her. These are not

(26:07):
products where you all have printing pressor something like that, like you said,
these are handmade works of art thatcan be worn, that can be
carried, and as you said,go to very very worthy causes. And
for my understanding, you have acouple of events coming up where you will

(26:30):
be sharing not only some of yourdaughter's artwork and have some original pieces,
but you will also be performing aswell. Tell me about some of those.
Oh yes. On August the sixth, I will be performing one of
my spoken words pieces, one ofmy points from my forthcoming book at the

(26:53):
Nuclear Age Peace Foundation's Peace State events. So that's on August the sixth in
Mantcito and then on September the twentyfirst, I am like an organic gartner,
a health advocate, and I willbe speaking giving a presentation in terms

(27:15):
of uplifting and motivating people. Youknow wherever you are, wherever you are
that you definitely can achieve your goals. It's not these instant things you know
with just take it a pill andthen boom, you know, everything is

(27:36):
fine. It's a journey, it'sa process, and definitely this is going
to be just wonderfulst than Scottsdale,Arizona. And the links to these events
will be on my website aria Elondot com and at a R I A
E L A n dot com.I absolutely love it. I love you.

(28:00):
I love your daughter and I lovewhat you are doing for us here
in southern California to not only helpprovide us with something that is increasing the
awareness of autism ability, but toalso benefit such worthy organizations like the Nuclear
Age Peace Foundation, Katerina's Clubs, and other And I just thank you for

(28:22):
joining us today to take us onthis journey and letting us know what you
do with Ariya elon Oh. Ireally appreciate it. Well, I'm a
big fan you Mo. I'm tellingyou, you guys are just so wonderful
and I just wanted you to knowthat. I mean, I thank you

(28:42):
for this opportunity and I'm going toleave you with teeth and one love.
