KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson joins Next Up to break down the Cincinnati Bengals trading running back Joe Mixon to the Houston Texans. The Bengals were expected to release Mixon after they reached a deal with free agent running back Zack Moss on Monday. The trade follows news that Texans former starting running back Devin Singletary agreed to a three-year, $16.5 million deal with the New York Giants. The Texans "underestimated the market for Devin Singletary" because "if they don't have Motor, they don't make the playoffs," Wilson said. However, Wilson is excited about Mixon joining the roster. Mixon "fits this offense really well" and "it's a strong move by the Texans" who "had the leverage" in this deal. Mixon had 1,034 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in 2023, and Wilson predicts the veteran running back will nicely compliment offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik's offense lead by quarterback C.J. Stroud. "You can do so much with play-action now." Wilson also comments on other Texans free agent signings, most notably cornerback Jeff Okudah, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and edge rusher Denico Autry.

(00:00):
We go down to the guest lineto get more details on the breaking news
as of what maybe thirty minutes ago. Our Texans insider NFL aficionado Aaron Wilson,
we call him a doub around here. Brother. Hope you got some
rest, but it's time to clockin. Tell me about this Joe Mixon
deal. Yes, they're acquiring JoeMixon. A little bit of a surprise

(00:22):
move in the sense that he wassupposed to be released, so he's toiling
in that. We'd heard that theywould have some interest in once he was
released. Instead, as many teamslike to do, they're acquiring something.
I don't think it's going to bemajor draft pick compensation, and they acquire
his contract. He has a threemillion dollars roster bonus coming up and about

(00:43):
about five million in salary, hasa ton of incentive clauses that could net
him a lot more. Be agood problem to have to have to pay
him with some of these incentives ifhe was to hit a lot of these
numbers. So it's a good situationfor them because really they were scrambling.
They need a running back. Theyunderestimated the market for Devin Singletary. They'd

(01:04):
offered him about four million. Instead, he gets three year nineteen and a
half million from the New York Giants. They were in a bidding war,
made an earnest, good faith effortto try to get sakuon Barkley. They
were willing to spend big for thatback, and they were at about three
years north of thirty three million.Of course he got a lot more to

(01:25):
go to the Eagles. So yeah, you get a little bit of a
bidding more. You don't do that, but then you you know, pivot
here and pivot I think in agood way where you've got a back that's
proven he's in the problem of hiscareer, has had four one thousand yard
seasons in seven years for the Bengals, and you know, yes, he
had a you know, serious incidentin college where he you know, with

(01:49):
the punching thing, has paid hisdebt and you know, did a suspension
there and all those things, andthat's a long you know, he's a
much younger then, So yeah, they acquire a back that I think fits
this offense very well. About sixone twenties round, a four four five
downhill guy with some vision, goodhands. Really the total package is a

(02:14):
running back very respected, very solid, and really what they needed was just
a guy that can be that bellcow and that they can run behind.
I think it's a strong move bythe Texans and in some ways fortunate before
the music stops and all the charitybills to be able to get this running
back. You know, Derrick Henry'sout there, Derek Henry has very high

(02:36):
financial expectations. The Ravens are interested. Texans looked into a little bit.
Dallas is looking into it, butinstead they were able to be sort of
selective with the player that the Bengalshad moved on from. You know,
makes you wonder a little bit otherthan financial. You know they wanted him
to restructure. Is there anything elseon why they wanted to move on?

(02:57):
But you know, in every building, you know kind of know everything that
they're doing and why they might doit. Bengal's not known from being the
most i would say free spending clubs, so it could have just been the
financial situation. But they didn't paythat much and they save a little bit
of money by having Zach Moss.Zach Moss had a little bit of interest

(03:17):
from the Texans, didn't really develop, so he pivots the Bengals, and
now that has a trigger reaction withthe Texans getting Joe Mixon. Yeah,
I love your comparison on the musicalchairs and all the seats are starting to
fill up because okay, we knowthey went competitively after sa kuon Barkley.
You don't get them, Okay, fine. I think a lot of fans

(03:38):
are like, all right, well, look, we've got plenty of other
options, like Austin Eckler and JoshJacobs and you know, Zach Moss's name.
But then by the end of theday, all those names are off.
And then we wake up this morningwe say Aaron Jones is gone,
and really you're looking at it,going, okay, we're down to Derrick
Henry and Joe Mixon has like, you know, starting caliber running backs and
you know, not to say aguy like Cordero Patterson or somebody like that

(03:59):
you can have gotten, but like, these are the last two sexy names.
So you gotta be happy if you'rea Texans fan that you got this
kid. And yeah, the treadon the tire, like Joe Mixon still
only twenty seven, still a veryproductive back, really good to catching the
ball out of the backfield. Imean, this is this is an awesome
weapon to add to this offense.Yeah, it really is, because you
know, when you have a quarterback, a triggerman like a CJ. Stroud,

(04:23):
you can do so much with playaction. Now, you know,
they have to respect that fake andthe real threat of any kind of play
that you can do with him, whether you're doing RPO, whether you're running
classic zone and you can throw itto him out of the backfield. He's
a pretty versatile weapon for the Texans. And Bobby Slowick got to be very

(04:43):
excited. I would love to comebe a fly on the wall to see
how Slowick is right now. Iwould imagine he's you know, maybe some
LFG type of energy, you knowright now, because he can build cool
game plans with a Joe Mixon, you know, running was there, you
know, really the sore point forthis team because Damian Pierce had this sophomore

(05:06):
slump. Maybe he doesn't fit theoffense as well. And then they were
really I mean a lot of peoplehave said this motors saved their butt.
If they don't have motor they probablydon't make the playoffs. And I think
Demito's has said that a few times, Like the motor was vital, but
you know, it's okay to havea difference, a disagreement of value.

(05:28):
He is a smaller back. Ithink this is more what they want,
more of a bell cow type.I mean, guy, it's like six
to twenty. I think he's veryfast. He's a bit of a home
run thread at times, a fourpoint winning career average. He's running for
forty nine touchdowns. I mean,he's a very proven guy. What'sever been
in question with him? You know, people have talked about, you know,

(05:51):
a few character things. They neverquestioned his football character, which everyone
has said on time, hard working, good teammates. You know, sometimes
you do. It's not like they'reunder some sort of zero tolerance policy where
you could never have a guy that'shad an all field issue. This is
a little different for them, wheremost of the guys they do acquire have

(06:13):
no off field issues that are known. Obviously someone could have had something.
But I mean, I think they'remaking a good bet here, and we'll
see if they decide to extend.Wouldn't surprise me if if they're feeling good
about it, if they want todo that, or you rent them for
the year and see how it goes. I mentioned these incentives. I mean,

(06:34):
guys, he can get two hundredand fifty or eleven hundred yards,
another three und fifty thousand, hegets thirteen hundred yards, five hundred thousand,
and fifteen hundred yards, they wouldbe happy to pay it. And
it goes on down the line. There's a Pro Bowl incident for a half
a million dollars. If he makesthe Pro Bowl, they'd be glad to
pay that. But yeah, Ithink they've done something here that there's risk

(06:57):
in everything. I think they're takinga good risk here with mixing. And
I bet he's motivated. No,No, I mean, you know been
jettison for the Bengals, a teamthat all right, let me everything.
Yeah, let me jump in here, Aaron real quick as we get rid
of wrap up. Aaron Wilson insidefor US here. Sports Talk seven ninety
on the Joe Mixon being traded fromCincinnati to Houston, Texans to play and

(07:18):
started running back behind CJ. Stridein that backfield. Just a quick snapshot
if we could the other signees andhow you think this lays out. The
Denico Autrie, is ziz l Shire, Mike Ford, Lonnie Johnson was the
first actual signing announced yesterday, JeffOkuda. So if you could just how
you think, you know, whatare we doing there, Who's starting,

(07:41):
Who's playing a lot in that rapidfire? Yeah, I mean Aziz I'll
share text with you know, playcash a little bit. That's the replacement
for him now with Azz one hundredand sixty three tackles, good speed,
maybe not as good in past coverageas Cashman, but definitely a very very

(08:01):
you know, tough guy, hardhitter, home setter. Then with Lonnie
Johnson, I suppose to Lonnie,he's matured a lot from his first time
here. He's gonna be a corespecial teamer big at six two, two
thirteen, you know, with Okudah, that's your number two corner, you
know. Since so they've moved onin that way from a Stephen Nelson where

(08:24):
you have Jeff Okuda and you havean inexpensive number two corner. That was
a very affordable deal. They've beenlooking at special teams. Mike Ford,
that's for special teams. Del Seanphillips A reported this morning one year deal
good special teamer from the Ravens backuplinebacker. So they've been filling some holes

(08:45):
and then the biggest signing to meother than them acquiring makes them be a
traded in Eco Autrey. I'm sorry, it's actually pronounced very similar to Miko.
It's Nico and Ico Autrey. He'shad ten f sacs. Very heavy
handed power player, can brush insideand also play on the edge as a

(09:07):
stand up. Uh. He isa tough, tough dude, pretty nasty.
If you watch some of the highlightsand some of the games we've been
covering him, he's you're in fora long day's work against him. I
think that the fans are going toreally like Autrey, and he plays the
style Demiko Ryans and yet Jonathan Gernarda great pass rusher, but occasionally,

(09:30):
you know, it took some spinningand things like that. He likes guys
to hold the gap a little moreanchor and then disengage and kind of bust
through the block straight on. Sothey get a bigger defensive end with Kenicle
Autrey. So I think it's anice fit for really for Dimico Ryan's scheme,
and I'm probably forgetting someone that youwant to do that talk about now,

(09:54):
I think we got one more gordif you want to get here on
your question before we wrap up asecond just real quick, and we didn't
touch on any word on the compensationon what they gave up for mixing.
No, as soon as I haveit, i'll report it. I don't
know. I'm gonna imagine that it'snot going to be anything from I'll be
surprised if it's a third rounder. They didn't they were gonna cut him,

(10:16):
so right, I'm guessing here withthose fourth round picks, fifth round or
six round pick or something. Okay, year, and that's the thing.
They don't have a fifth or sixround this year, so that would be
maybe twenty to maybe future. ButI'm just saying, like what he's worth,
you know, in a case wherebasically he's about to be cut and

(10:37):
they have to cut him because they'vegot Moss. The Texans had the leverage
on this one, so I'd besurprised if they lose this trade in terms
of value, even though he's agood player. It's a weird situation because
you've they'd already moved on him.The time to trade him was before that,
but they didn't get that done.So they did. The Texans had

(10:58):
the leverage, So we'll see howdid the Caserio come out on that,
but yeah, that is not outthere yet. All right. We gotta
let you slide a, Doug.We appreciate it. We will continue monitoring
your social media and refreshing ac quarterlyas we do. He is at Aaron
Wilson underscore NFL our Texans and NFLinside of him on Sports Talk seven ninety.

(11:18):
We appreciate it, brother, We'lllet you get back to work.
Thanks, talk all right, man, Always take care
