Stan Norfleet of Next Up is joined in-studio by former Texans defensive tackle Amobi Okoye and Houston Chronicle writer Jonathan Alexander to create a Texans roundtable. Stan, Amobi and Jonathan breakdown the first week of NFL free agency and grade Texans general manager Nick Caserio's transactions and signings. Defensive end Danielle Hunter and running back Joe Mixon addressed the media Thursday as the duo was officially introduced as Texans. The Cincinnati Bengals traded Mixon to the Texans for a seventh-round draft pick. The Texans have now signed Mixon to a three-year, $27 million extension. The Texans signed Hunter to a two-year, $49 million contract. Hunter wore #99 during his career with the Vikings, but Hunter said he's "not going to mess with" J.J. Watt's #99 jersey. After the Texans traded defensive tackle Maliek Collins to the San Francisco 49ers and Arik Armstead signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Texans signed veteran Tim Settle Jr. to a two-year, $7 million deal. Stan, Amobi and Jonathan also react to the Texans trading their first-round and seventh-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for their second-round and sixth-round picks this year and their second-round pick in 2025. Houston's original first-round pick belongs to the Arizona Cardinals after the Texans traded it during last year's draft to get Will Anderson Jr.

(00:24):
feeling great on a Friday line fromthe Sports Talk seven ninety studios,
Stan Fleet in the saddle, tryingto lead this group of distinguished young men.
We're gonna hang out for a whiletoday. I wish we had something
to talk about. Connedy McGovern.Chris Gordy is out today. He will

(00:45):
You hear him on the show,Friend of the station, Friend of
the show, That is Jonathan mAlexander on the Texans beat for the Houston
Chronicle. Appreciate him hanging out.Someone else that you have heard on this
program several times. My Brody,I'm a tenth overall pick twenty seventeen for
that first round Bread must be greattwenty seeen that top team. Kate Houston,

(01:07):
Texas defensive end defensive lineman of MobileCoyer in the building were waiting on
Jay Wales j Wells, former Texansrunning back. He'll be in here as
well, So we got everything covered. Once Jay Wales joins U, we're
gonna have a running back on theoffensive side. We got a defensive lineman.
We got John d. M Alexander, credible media pundit on the beat,
knows the in and out. Hewas over at NRG yesterday. Can't

(01:27):
wait, dear mem And he gotme a loud mouth that kind of tried
to play ball. That might bea journalist sometime, pend on what you
ask me. So we hang outto have a good time. We're gonna
have a Texans roundtable. The majorityof this show today will be focused on
the team over there off Kirby, and if you had not heard the breaking
news, we'll start there. Thismorning. There has been a trade,

(01:49):
not involving persons at this point, but involving draft selections. Let me pull
this up. Appreciate your patient workingthrough the technology. Here we go.
The Texans and the Minnesota Vikings haveagreed to a trade. The Texans will
be inheriting a second round pick thisyear, pick number forty two, a

(02:12):
sixth round pick this year, picknumber one eighty eight, and a second
in twenty twenty five, the Texanssurrender the twenty third overall pick this year
and seventh round pick, pick twothirty two. So let's just start there,
right off the rip, and thenwe'll get into the events over there
yesterday. First of all, goodmorning, Jents, how you feeling and

(02:36):
where we at? Jmay I startwith you, sir when the trade is
announced? And I appreciate you joiningus on no breaking news. You got
obligations for the chronicle. Where didit land for you? What is Casarrio
doing here? And I can't waitto hear how Houston feels about it?
SEPHN one three, two and two, five seven ninety. Yeah, I
was a little bit surprised. Youknow, there are a lot of good
options at number twenty three that theTexans could get. Not a lot of

(02:59):
great options, but a lot ofgood options. But when I look at
it, you know, you lookat Nicko Sarreo's history in the draft,
and he's been with the Texans. This will be his fourth off seasons draft.
H Yeah, his history has shownhe likes to trade up. So
I do think. I don't thinkthat they're going to stay at forty two.
It would make sense if they dodo that. But he's had a

(03:19):
history of moving up, and Ithink that this could be the precursor for
a move for them to maneuver anotherplace in the draft. But you have
to think that they have a planin place. I won't to believe that.
Yeah, and but but yeah,to move back from It'd be different
if they had a higher draft selection, But twenty three, I think it
makes sense. There weren't a lotof great players you could get there,

(03:43):
So I think that there is theprecursor for a move to move up at
some point. Movie when you hearthe trade right the second round picks,
Texans do not have a first roundpick this year coming off of that season,
How did they land for you?I mean you could kind of expected
it, I mean expecting them tomove out of twenty three. I mean
just the from from our history ofall of what we've we've we've done with

(04:09):
our draft picks, and especially lastyear moving up to get moving up to
get Will Will Anderson, Like Ikind of expected it, Like I don't
expect us to have high draft picksthe next few years. So what it
did for me, I always thoughtthere was a chance that Nick could move

(04:29):
up or move back. I thinkwe all agree that's fair. It was
told to me and we actually saidit on the show Gordion, and we
were talking about somebody one of thescouts, some personnel big wig estimates that
there are only fifteen or sixteen selectionsin this year's class worthy of a first
round pick. So when you're sittingat twenty three, you have to make

(04:51):
a decision. Am I gonna moveup or am I gonna try and get
out? And as we see everyyear, there's a team this year happens
to be minnesot trying to creep backinto the first round move up because they
got their eyes on a particular quarterbackthat's typically the play. So it didn't
surprise me that Nick moved out.Am I disappointed? Yeah? I mean

(05:12):
the first round they wanted the draft, you know, you at the draft
party, we're doing wherever we're doing, wherever we're doing that, and it's
like, damn, it would havebeen cool to add another first round pick.
I had my eyes on some certainguys, Darius Robinson out of Missouri
defensive lineman, Johnny Newton, Illinoisdefensive lineman. I thought about maybe Nate
Wiggins out of Clemson that corner peoplethat were ballers had good combines and fit

(05:35):
what the Texans need to hold upon the roster. And I'll come back
to you with this, Jade.I can also understand when I was scouting
in Washington, excuse me, Iwas scouting in Washington and Vinnicie Arado said
to me. He says, stay'llnever forget ballers are in the top ten.
That's why Mubby went. But thevalue is in round two. So

(06:00):
when I see Casarrio accumulate these secondround picks in conjunction with the second rounders
they already have, it makes methink he and his scouting department they're like,
look, we got the cap, were trying to manage, and Memory
told us the cap for two seasons, not just one. So I think
he's saying, we're gonna do whatwe need to do this year. But
I really got my eyes on twentyfive and that's where I'm gonna need these

(06:24):
second rounders. Now, I gotanother thought, but go ahead, when
you hear me lay it out thatway. Values in the second round.
They wasn't in love with anybody,is you said? I don't hate to
move the trade back it doesn't botherme. It's just not sexy from a
draft party standpoint. Yeah, whenI mentioned that, you know, number
twenty three pick isn't great, Iagree with you. Form a GM used

(06:46):
to tell me after sixteen they're thesignificant drop off in talent in most classes.
Yet in most classes. Yeah, when you look at you know,
the Texans and what they could potentiallydo. I thought Darris Robinson would have
been a great pick at twenty three. Yeah, three. I thought also
Johnny Newton would have been a greatpick, just given the fact that they
don't have any defense. We're stillgonna talk about that too now. Yeah,

(07:06):
yeah, so they need I thinkthey need a starter still at defensive
tackle, maybe even too, youknow, depending on where de Nico Artrey
plays, maybe plays more outside, maybe plays some inside. But yeah,
you're right there. There's value. There's a lot of depth and value in
the second and third rounds, andthe Texans now have three Day two picks

(07:26):
and a lot of value works. You get wide receivers, cornerbacks, offensive
linemen, picks and players that theyneed for the future so that that could
be where they're heading. I thinkmy only gripe or or my only wonder
about the Texans is whether they couldhave gotten more from the Vikings considering how
desperate the Vikings are and getting thequarterback. Why you found up, Moby,

(07:47):
what's wrong with you? I'm justthinking that I don't I don't think
we we necessarily need to draft forneed. Don't draft for me. I
think I think we have we havewe have enough right now. The man
just say we don't have no defensivetackles, and we are talking about that
mot We got youth, we gotwe got we got some, we got

(08:09):
some, we got some youth. That that that that that we we need
to really let develop, you know, and and and and and bringing bringing
and that that that was big. That was good. Oh yeah, no
question, we'll get into that bigvevan veteran presents. But I think that
I think we should really look intointo into value in the draft. So

(08:31):
that's what I believe, Causearrio isthinking here, all right, my scouts
and I feel like we won't beable to get the guys we really like.
So then my next question to Nickwould have been, could you have
packaged what you already have and movedup to go get one of the guys
that you really like whoever that is. Now. I'm not talking about going

(08:52):
crazy and going to get Marvin HarrisonJr. That's not gonna happen, But
like, is there somebody else?Roma don gonna be a pick out of
Washington Wide receiver. If they lovedhim, I would have said, Nick,
why don't you package and go moveup yourself? Maybe they feel like
the difference in Rome and Dooonsay andKeon Coleman out of Florida State. Keon
might fall to the second round,so let me accumulate more second rounders.

(09:16):
The other thought that I had,and we're gonna go to break in just
second. I'll take the phone callson the other side of Alan's south side.
You'll be first up on the otherside. Seven one three, two
one two five seven ninety guys.Don't forget what you're about to say.
But let me wrap up this segmentwith this part. My second thought when
I look at what Caserio did thismorning, is this Casario saying staying,
I hear you, I am aboutto move up. I'm just gonna use

(09:39):
my future ones to do it.I'm gonna use my twenty five to one
and future stuff, some combination ofwhat I got in this and the future,
and these second round picks give mesomething to be able to fall back
on. It's just a thought outthat I had when you and me say
that real quick, jam, Mayyou liked that idea if he uses one's

(10:00):
future ones and his draft starts inround two? No, I don't know.
I don't. I don't like givingup a future first round pick unless
I have one, and I don'tthink Nick Siria has done that. I
think if you're a team desperate andyou need something, then potentially, but
I wouldn't. I wouldn't give upa future first round pick unless I already
had, like like they had multiplefirst rounds and they've used that to move

(10:22):
up to get places. But Ithink they should keep their first round pick,
their future first round pick. It'sjust a talk. I have no
idea what Nick is thinking, andI also had no idea what the hell
Nick was thinking off this damn EricArmstead scenario and Malie Collins. We got
to unpack that as well. JoeMixon gets a contract extension, We got
to get into that. Tom's morereal text is talking Listen Sports Talk seven

Cooye represent the University of Louisville.Acc up in here for one time,
All these sec is around here, including you. Connadie mcgovernor on the other
side of the glass doing some fancystuff with a computer and the scutter butt
to start to show. It'll bea heavy texting show today. Cassio on

(11:45):
the move again. What is thisfour straight days. Casario none something four
straight days has been news with theHouston Texas and the news if you have
not heard as of yet, isthat Cassarrio has traded the twenty twenty four
first round picked the Minnesota Vikings. The vik So Casarrio Sins picked twenty three
and a seventh round pick to Minnesota. Minnesota Sins Houston their second round pick

(12:11):
this year, pick forty two,a sixth round pick this year pick one
eighty eight, and Minnesota's second roundpick in twenty twenty five. So we
have kicked it around in here justso the people that didn't hear us open
the show. I'm okay with itbecause I think it's part of a bigger
move. Jamie, are you okaywith the move you felt like I'm sorry

(12:37):
you felt like that kind of Iwant to know the context behind it and
trying to I just I'm a littleify on that. I felt like they
could have gotten more, all right, that's a fair assessment. Now Here's
why I think Caserio does the dealnow, because I think, yes,
he could have played the game andas we got closer to the draft,
leveraged more. But Minnesota could havealso taken this deal to somebody else,

(13:01):
But I don't think they had todo it though Minnesota. But if you
don't like what your options are likelyto be at twenty three, I understand
the move, and I think theycould have traded with anybody and got this
type of deal. I mean, anybody looking to anybody looking to come back
into the bottom of the first round. Did you like it or no?

(13:22):
Mo Before the people that didn't hearyou open the show, I didn't.
I need to see the reason forit. But I mean Nick knows what
he's doing, so he has hehas, he has, he has,
he has some reasons for some reasonfor it. But I did. I
ain't see the the spark, thethe usage. It's not it's not as
it's not sexy. Look at thisas value right, Like we talked about

(13:46):
real estate, I try and usereal life applications when we talk about sport.
What was taught to me by myogs staying, you never want the
biggest house in the neighborhood. Getone of the smaller homes in one of
the better neighborhoods because it elevates yourproperty value. Put your ego aside.
Who cares that you got one ofthe smaller properties. Your property valuation is

(14:07):
up because you're in there with them. This is about value, not ego.
So I'm trying to use that asan analogy here. I think Nick
Caserio in this year's draft goes, you know what the difference in twenty three
and forty two. I can stillget a receiver, I can still get
a corner. I could still geta developmental offensive lineman that will learn behind

(14:28):
tongs on the tightest hour. There'svalue there. I understand it. I
do agree with what you said,Jay, Do we hold off a little
bit? Can we at least getout of free agency before we start doing
that? It's a fair assessment.Let me go to the phone lines and
hear from the people. If Icould all on the south side, he's
been holding for a little bit.Oh, if I can get my mouse

(14:48):
turned around the right way? Mybad color? Do me favor punch up
app please? Al. Good morningto you, sir. Yeah, what's
up staying? You got some boysin the room today. Yeah, and
I'm glad, as you know, you need to give him a little instro
on me. I'm sold back allthe I remember Koye when he got drafted
at nineteen. You understand me.But let me go break this up because

(15:09):
y'all tiptoeing around it. Let mesay this. Let me say this here.
I go back to the first runningback we ever had. That's done
to McDade. That just show y'all. Fort I go back to Texas.
Yeah, you already know. Listen, this is the thing. When you
had that front tackle, you hada first round pick. My opinion,

(15:31):
I'm gonna trade up because I wantthat guy from Texas or that Murphy Dood.
I needed d tackle. We seenwhat rookies come in the league and
do Tank Dale DJ Stroud. Thesekids nowadays were higher grade. Is plugg
get in play. The thing aboutus staying is this. We gave up
forty yards. We were the firstteam, the first team to give up

(15:52):
the long ball in defense and fortyyards and better we were number one of
that. We got gassed up themiddle. We got two one hundred yards
throwd on us with that boy fromCleveland and a running back ran over one
hundred and fifty up the middle inIndiapois. Coach etn with Jacksonville killed us.
We gonna have to see these peopleand the bottom line is this,

(16:14):
hello, y, go ahead, how did it be? And the bottom
line is the Miko Ryan, youbeat the drum on this for a week
straight. He said he was gonnahelp us our front seven got to get
this to Miko talking. This ain'tme talking. He's seen what them dudes
was getting torched. You don't haveno dudes on your defensive rosters in those

(16:34):
positions that really showed take the nextstep the next year of attend. These
guys have been lead two and threeyears with these positions. We suffer from
the nikel of safety. We needthat up front and he felled with Armstead.
You mean to tell me you gonnatrade your first round pick. You
needed to trade up to try toget a d tackle. You need a

(16:56):
coner. If you go into thisseason with that defense to edge russ Is,
they gonna overrun the quarterback because theycoming from the side. The quarterback
already got to do a step upin the middle of the D tackle.
This week, who's closer to thequarterback saying the d tacle, he is
closer to the ball. So I'mgonna slide up let hunting them overrun men,
and I'm gonna go up the millon you and then Coners this week

(17:18):
on one side and listens, takeon this NI on the south side.
Are we upset? Moby? You'replaying on the D line in this league?
Uh, pull your mic down justa little bit. All right,
good money and this we'll get tothis in the next segment about the Eric
Armstead and what happened and didn't haveTexans due sign Tim Settle Junru coming from

(17:41):
Buffalo, former Virginia tech Hoky.I'll forgive him for that, al,
says the Miko. In other words, cause Sario should have used stayed at
twenty three or really moved up,using the twenty third pick to move up
to get you. Make sure thatyou solified, he said. Byron Murphy,
the second or one of these otherguys, I think you can still
get a d tackle with one ofthese second round picks guys coming into the

(18:03):
league at that position. Is itmore difficult to come into the league and
play on the interior versus on theedge on the defensive line. I think
it's it's harder on the edge. It's harder on the edge. Yeah,
I think, I think. Ithink, Well, the highest paid positions

(18:26):
are, of course, the defensiveend of left tackles the corners, and
so you want that edge rusher togo get the quarterback because the timing and
getting that ball out there. Soit's that's why I think it's it's harder
for the edges. You know whatmakes me thinking, Jamie, I come
to you on this because I knowyou're talking to players and teams and gems
all over the league. I lookat what the Texans have done, look

(18:48):
at the success that Will Anderson Jr. Had coming off the edge, and
then look at who the Cowboys tookMonzie Smith out of Michigan in the first
round. He was d MP likethey just didn't even play. So to
your point, how difficult it canbe. Even Jaylen Carnter this year,
Jayleen Carnor from Georgia, he wasn'tgetting snaps on the interior like that.
He he started earning his kick towardsthe end, but he won't getting hell

(19:11):
of snaps like that. So Ithink you're saying, yeah, the solid
year though he ended up there. But I'm saying it ain't like from the
rip Will was out there first game, I'm blocking field goals. I'm getting
precious he an opportunity to sack LamarJackson in that first game at Baltimore.
So you you couldn't be onto somethingthen you had something you want to say,
James Jayalen did he start he startedout? He didn't start off the

(19:32):
rip. He was he was thefirst they were saying he was gonna be
defensive rook of the year early. He slowed down at the end of the
year. Yeah, that's all aboutto say. I don't think Jayleen Carter
started off the rip. He didgood. I thought it was Jordan Davis
and Fletcher Cox off the top.Hold on, hold on, hold on,
yeah, Jordan Davis about Jayleen Carterthis year, j Carter, Yeah,

(19:55):
Jalen Carter started out really good.I think Jordan Davis was hurt at
first and then he kind of slowedup. Go ahead with your point.
I'll look it up. Go ahead. But yeah, I the original one
thing I was gonna say was,you know, I still think I don't.
I don't think the Texans would havetraded up just because they already traded
up for will Anders last year.I mean, Byron Murphy would be the
only guy I would, you know, think about it because there's such a

(20:18):
need there. But they do haveto fix defensive tackle. I think I
think it's important that they get there. They've taken a step back to go
from Sheldon Rankings and Malie Collins. What they have now it it does have
to be a position they have todress and I don't think this is a
deep defensive tackle class, So Ithink I thought staying at twenty three probably
would have been better. So Ido I agree with some of our's point

(20:41):
because they do have needs that theymust address. And when you go back
this far, you do, uh, you do run the risk of picking
up somebody who isn't as talented aswhat you could have gotten at number twenty
three. Hmm, let me takeone more lines are loaded, man,
I can clearly see people want toget in here and talk about this.
Let's grab one more call before wewrap up this segment. John and Htown

(21:03):
getting here on what Caserio's doing overthere. NRG trading this year is twenty
third overall. Pick Yes, sir, I think that that what we're forgetting
is, uh, there's a lotof value. There's a lot of good
receivers. It's a deep draft forreceivers, and there's some people that could
go on the second round. Theguy that I'm really high on is Lad
McConkey out of George Georgia. Yeah, I'm yeah, I'm really hoping we

(21:26):
get him because he looked fantastic inthe Senior Bowl. Granted they're not pros,
but a lot of those guys aregoing to be drafted high. You
know, those defensive backs. Imean he was getting like eight ten yard
separation. I mean, he reallycuts hard. I was very impressed with
him, and I guess as proday was outstanding. So yeah, but
I think I think that's where thevalue is, and I think Cassario's looking

(21:48):
at that for value, and I'mkind of thinking we are going to get
a receiver. So I mean,I'm hoping it's him, you know,
it's Lad, but there's a lotof other good receivers out there that we
can get in and we can gethim in the second or third rounds.
I think we get some really good, really good choices. Appreciate it,
John and Hetown. A couple thingswill wrap up this segment. I got
Troy, I got Wood, Igot west Side, Joe, I got

(22:11):
Anthony. I promise you we'll gostraight to the phones on the other side.
Lamb McConkie, by the way,and Jmay you may have seen this.
His comp coming out of the SeniorBowl and combine is Cooper Cup Gordon
gave me that nugget yesterday. Sothat's the mold of player that you could
be getting in the second round iswhere I've seen him, mock mostly Lamb

(22:33):
mcconki out of Georgia, the widereceiver. Second thing is, I was
right, and you guys are right. Jordan Davis, according to Pro Football
Reference, did not start until thefinal game of the season, but he
played a lot in his first fivegames. He had three and a half
sex. So you guys are right. I was right. All right,
let's take these phone calls. Stepaside, comeback, would you will be

(22:56):
for you? Willing? Next up? Excuse me, Troy west Side,
Joe Anthony, what the hell?Caseario cooking over here? And the defensive
tackle conundrum? Casarrio, what thehell you and Domico got going on with
this? The tackle man mortcm righthere, kbm me. This is next
up. Stuck with Stan Northfleet andChris Gordy during this next stage on Sports

(23:19):
Talk seven ninety. Good morning toyou Houston on a Friday. My favorite
city in America tea at each andevery weekday morning ten to noon. Right
here on Sports Talk seven ninety standNorthfleet would be me. I'm at Stan
sportsman Gordy taking some personal time todayin his stead. My man Jonathan m
Alexander here, you can catch him. You see his work at John m

(23:41):
Alexander. Oh no, it's Jonathanm Alexander on social. That's why I
was going with that Amobile Coyer kickofffor Kids Foundation, former tenth overall pick
for the Houston Texans defensive lineman,my Nigerian Brody and we hang it out
in the studio. I mentioned thatJonathan Wells would likely join us. Jay
Welles did tech. He said, hey man, I got something came up.
I'm not gonna be able to joinyou. He told me to tell

(24:03):
the good people in Age Town appreciateyour patience and he will be chiming in.
You can go to his social Heheavy with that ig and we'll get
that up. If you go toour page, I know that Connor has
put it up there as well,so you can go see what's going on
with my man Jay Wells. Allright, going to the phones. Any
thoughts before we do that real quick. This Detackle situation has me bugged out.

(24:25):
I still don't understand Malie Collins EricArmstead, who it was rumored there
was interest by both parties defensive linemanout of the Niners. He ends up
taking the deal. Where he's goingI ain't see where he was going,
Jacksonville. He's going to Jacksonville. So he comes to the AFC South three
years, fifty one million. Hegot his seventeen million per we'll unpack that.

(24:47):
But just right off the rip, anything from y'all two on either of
those where we go to the phoneson the trade, on the trade,
yeah, I mean, obviously theTexans attempted to trade Eliite Collins for Eric
Armstad straight up, and he felt, like Eric arm said, possibly fit
Demko Ryan's system a little bit betterthan than Malie Collins, who was one
of the most consistent players for manyyears. But I think it was a

(25:10):
matter of fit and how they seeDemiko Ryan's wanting his defense to go.
You see it in the different movesthat he makes. Disease signing a ease
over Blake cash Brow was a movegoing to get a big boy, a
bigger body than on a well, but it fell through when they signed the
Neil Hunter. Hunter signed forty eightguaranteed money. That's all two years forty
eight or two years up to fiftyone forty eight guarantee you. And when

(25:32):
they got him and they agreed tothat deal, I think that changed things
and changed their perspective on on onwhether they felt like they could actually Yeah,
they still did the deal. Ibrought it up on the show yesterday.
The one thing two things I wantto ask his ario. Number One,
I'm not letting two and a halfmillion dollars a year the difference between
Patrick mccrank, Patrick Queen, andazz al Shire. I'm not letting two

(25:53):
and a half million per year keepme from going to get Patrick Queen.
That's just me. The second thingI want to ask me is, okay,
what Eric Armstead fell through? Butyou still sent Malik Collins knowing that
Sheldon Rankins wasn't in the bag yet, So you you got a lock down
one of those two. Who thehell goes into the off season. You
got to replace both interior defensive linemen. So even if you stay at twenty

(26:17):
three and you draft one of theserookies, there's no guarantee that that dude's
gonna be able to step in immediatelyand get busy. A moment just told
us it's difficult in the interior moreso than on the edge. I just
think when they when they told theforty nine ers and they proposed to trade,
they couldn't like not send of courseI can. I mean you couldn't.
You got to remember they have agreat relationship, and you just not

(26:38):
send the milite Collins. Why didn'tyou give me armstead head? Well it
was the Texans who who because theyhad to get the money to as fair.
All right, let me go tothe phone line, Troy, but
I'm sorry that took a little whileto get to you. Go ahead,
Troy, stand the Fellas h mobile. We need a defensive chattle can become.
We need it on me. Yesterday, I was surprised that the Texans

(27:10):
did give up the Twitter third pickbecause I think they I like the Newton
kid out of Illinois, but youknow, he may go a little hargh.
But I thought the Texans might beable to get one of those guys
like that. And it was surprisingthat you know, you let all your
defensive tackles go like that. That. That was surprising. But I gotta
trust that Nico, Uh, NicoDomko and my mad Caserio got a plan

(27:33):
because even though Freggcy is Freecy, you're still gonna have cuts and release guys
get released before camp and stuff likethat. I just think it was was
be insane for them to go inwith we we know they're not gonna go
into the season with what they gotright now, so I'm sure they're working
other stuff. It's just frustrated becauseyou want to see it all right in
front of you, don't want towait and see how it happens. But
uh, and then you know youstill got the corner position. You still

(27:56):
don't know if you go sign StephenNelson next possibly he may be coming back,
because I hadn't heard anybody trying toNobody has trying to offer him what.
I don't know what's gonna be withhim. So I just have to
put up in Demico hands because he'sgonna be the coach. It's his defense.
He knows what kind of players hewants. Evidently he was saying,

(28:17):
okay, I can we can letSheldon go and we can let Malie Collins
go. That was surprising. Tome, but uh, that was surprising.
But all we can do is justwait and see and you can speculate
all day. But at this point, I don't want to hear about Texas
are interested in somebody or close tosomebody, because so far this season it's
been one or two million dollars andkept on from signing anybody. So we'll

(28:38):
see what happens. Man, Thanksfor checking a call, brother man,
Troy and Humble. Let's keep itmoving. Let's go to uh, who
is it all way on the westside of the city, West side,
Joe? What up? What abig helmany? Man? I just had
to get in on this man.First of all, we got a chill
that sentiment of saying that, oh, Dimico can get anybody come play with
us or him because obviously, man, they didn't whipped on a couple of

(29:00):
deals. But in locker rooms, man, I understand like they build a
commanderie between those two cackles. Initially, so they dealt Collins at first,
I'm assuming, and then Rankings wasstilled like in the if mode. But
then they had this other one,the other Armstead. He goes in the

(29:22):
division, man, and she's theteam opposer. Boy who he played for,
which makes you question, like,is it that the fact of the
money that's going around saying okay withthese high end players, Hey, Jackins
ain't gonna play you. They notgonna give you one. And it's proven.
Nick's gotta get better, man,he got to release some of that
money. I understand as a player. Or are they contingent on just going

(29:44):
through this season and making sure thatwith this scheme we can get away with
this and then come back later.I hang up in the list and man,
y'all have a good one, mymad I'm making a rick mistake.
Appreciate you, Westside Joe Jama.I don't think it's fair for somebody to
call Serio cheap. He traded forMixing. He just paid Mixing. He
gave the nail Hunter big boy money. Uh, he paid everybody on the

(30:07):
offensive line a year ago. Idon't think you can call him cheap now.
Steven Nelson was showing his ass lastoff season and Casario gave him a
two million dollar Let's feel good forthe people that say that Cacerio won't spend
the money. I'm not there. They spent a lot of money this year.
I mean they basically went all out. I mean, of course they
tried not to overpay for certain players, like they had a threshold of what

(30:29):
they were willing to pay, Butthey spent a lot of money. They
spent because I mean the Neil Hunter'sdeal was unprecedented. For him to get
that much guaranteed money. Forty eightmillion dollars guaranteed for two years, is
like, that's like all pro.You you his contract? Do you cover?

(30:51):
Ye cover two years? Forty eightmillion dollars guaranteed? Q? Yeah,
you don't see that. In thedefensive this wasn't the you know,
Nick Srea wasn't being cheap. Ithink earlier years he didn't spend as much
money so he could get them outof the cap cap hell, he cleaned
it up. Yes, I agreewith that. Let me go take this

(31:11):
last phone call if I could connorWood and Houston get in here. Man,
what the hell Caserio got going on? Between free agents and moving out
of the twenty third overall? Pick? What's going on in Kurby? Man?
What's going on? Nick Caserio islike a car salesman. I don't
like car salesman was at all.Damn I got to deal with people in
the city. That's car salesman. What you got, I got it.

(31:33):
I got to deal with the winand buying a new car. That's really
why I go to different dealership.I'm going to negotiate. I'm going to
find out which one I want to, uh shit my money with. That's
what's going on with the NFL.Nick Serrio's out here. He wants to
show he the smartest cat on theblock. But these agents and these players
know the game. They know he'sjust like a car salesman talking fast,

(31:56):
and that's the reason why he's losingout. On day one when all these
running backs coming out the board, you know, we were losing out because
he's trying to be slick, keeptrying to show I can be so smart.
I can say two million here, and you losing out. Then on
day two, were able to getback in there, make a few adjustments,
get a running back, you know, Nixon, and then we was

(32:20):
able to go get Hunter, youknow, which made a spash on day
two. Then day three you comearound. You was let your defense of
line a go with a supposedly weekweek of an eye. I'm gonna give
you my man, and then we'regonna wink eye, and I'm gonna get
unsaid, you know, after Ido a few things back over here at

(32:42):
home with Hunter on his contract. But then next thing ain't no Hunters Like
I'm not being to wait around andsee what Nicks said. You don't go
to the I'm gonna be a freeaction. I'm gonna hit the market and
get the best still I can.And before you know, we losing out
on ranking collars other defense aligner becausehe wants to try to be slick with
the dollars and show he Nick thestereo. I'm I'm walking around with my

(33:06):
bes on. I'm got to starta degree. I'm the sharpest man in
the box. Now, Jay sharpyou you you walking around here? You
saying and now you just training numberyes because you Hein's not no paying,
He's just like, well, hey, let me go ahead and do this.

(33:27):
Maybe something might come up tall theland of thing might come up.
But we know if we had thattwenty third pen, we can get a
corner back, a good corner back, a deep does a tackle, maybe
even move up a little bit toget a great deep as a tock in
a great corner. But we surelycan't do it. Now would Wood from
Ace down. Well, I imagineit's a lot of people in the city

(33:50):
like real talk, and we gottarap and will continue this conversation on the
other side. But like imagine thepeople yesterday, we wake up not only
Eric Gongstead going to Jacksonville, butShell the Ranks is going to Cincinnati.
I did Cincinnati Radio yesterday. Theyare very pleased to have Sheldon Ringers.
They are not tripping by the wayof losing Joe Mixon. They not tripping

(34:12):
at all. They feel like ZachMoss's an upgrade. I told him out
of their mind. If they believeZach Masson's better running back than Mixing,
we will get to Mixing. Hesigns an extension. He spoke yesterday from
NRG. I want to hear fromhim as well. But just think about
the Texan fans. We had thisgreat year, boom all right, salary
cap space, fourth most salary capspace in the league, We got all
our draft picks, bying large,we got this twenty third overall. And

(34:37):
then think about this week. Man, it has been a roller coaster for
Texans fans. God bless you.I will say this. I still choose
to trust in Nick and Domenico.I still trust him because of what they
did a year ago. Now yougotta go do it again. But I'm
willing. I don't quite understand themaliite Collins is weird to me. I

(34:58):
told you about the Patrick Queen stayingSaint Kwan Barkley. I understand letting that
go. I'm not tripping about that. I do have another thought about the
philosophy Cantaria. I want to runit by Johnthan Alexander, Mobile Koye in
studio. Let's wrap up our oneand we'll get into hour two. Find
an hour of the week, takingyour phone calls on Texans for the entire
show Real Texans Talking. Listen toSports Talk seven ninety to the next to

(35:22):
the dirt Road. But this isnext time you kind of hit on everything
I wanted to say with stan OrVleet and Chris Gordy on Sports Talk seven
ninety. Yeah, it could beone of those welcome back into the show
man. Listen my boys in here. Gordy's out today. My man Jonathan
Alexander from the Chronicle is in here. Got my man former textan defensive lineman.

(35:45):
That's Mobile Coyer over there, andthey ain't here laughing at me.
I had a situation in my personallife this morning. I'm gonna spare you
the details, but yo, no, I had good reason to be hog
man. What the hell? Yo, day didn't get in Houston dating in

(36:06):
Houston, real talk boy, thisthing, And I know the fella's out
there listen to me. We dohave ladies that listen as well. And
I'm sure as a lady you dealingwith knuckleheads like myself in the city.
It's crazy. But man, Ihad a situation this morning and I can't
stop thinking about it, be honestwith you, and it's distracted me from
my work, and so I hadto get it out. So I'm kind
of feeling the guys in a littlebit on what's happening. I won't get

(36:29):
into the details, but man, ladies, y'all need to stop. Man,
this is getting absurd out here.Colin's got a lady in his life,
Connor, I'm glad that you founda young woman and you ready to
settle down. And he's what,Connor, you've been out of college?
What this summer would be a year? Yeah? All right, So he's
newly out of undergrad so he's gotlady in his life. He's doing his

(36:49):
same moby. All right, Yeah, I'm forty two, bro, so
I'm on the scene, but I'mnot you know, I'm not a youngin
anymore. Obviously, let's go backto just yourself. But stories, right,
we both could go stories all daylong, these guys. So,
like, guys are getting fred whatelse he's just get? He just got
what you got? Three? Is? Was it fifty one? Three?

(37:13):
Whatever? It was? All right, so al shod here just got some
new money. So what twenty someyears old? You just get new money?
C J. Strott were talking aboutthe whole amber Rose thing. Guys
getting this money. It's the offseason, here we go. Is it
is dating while you're an NFL playermore challenging than most people would think it

(37:36):
would be? Or is it everythingthat we think it is or they think
it is. I know what itis, but go ahead, it differs.
Just you know, it's it's butit is harder. It's harder.
But unless you're with you're one ofthose who or was with somebody you've always
been with high school or something likethat, undergrad college, girls, college
sweetheart, whatever, and it's stillis still hard because you know, you.

(38:00):
You you have all this, Yeah, you got all this, what
you got this this, all thisattention is going to be coming to you
just off of of what you doand what it is and the don comes
with it and so and you haveall this money, and so you know,

(38:23):
girls are gonna want to gravitate toyou. And so if even those
that have the high school sweethearts,I mean, I command, I command
Lebron like you know, he's he'soh yeah, oh boy, that boy
got the best PR team, thebest crisis management staff money can buy.
That boys squeaky claim. God blessthem God. So it's hard. It's

(38:45):
hard when it's hard when you areeven if if if you're with your high
school sweetheart or not, or evenif you weren't, it is hard to
to you know, today, whenyou when you're, when you're when you're
a professional athlete. So let mesay this, and Jay Man, I
want to get you in on this, just because you know a ton of
guys around the league, and youknow you've been covering you know, you
and I've been together in different marketsworking and stuff, so we can compare

(39:07):
stories. I can tell you thisand I said this the other day I've
been single roaming the streets of Houstonoff and on for twenty years, and
Houston keeps reinventing herself like that.We was doing the outside before. We
were saying outside man. Now,Wes Shimer been looking like that for a
while. Rinsman been looking like thatfor a while. We've been moving.

(39:29):
Houston is one of them cities.Boy, if you're not careful, you
can get distracted. I said thislast week. I said that DeShawn that
left, the James Harden that leftwere very different than the guys that showed
up. Houston would put you throughthe ringer on the low. You expect
that from Miami. You expect thatfrom Vegas to some degree, at least

(39:52):
in black culture, right. Youexpect that from Atlanta. It can get
away from DC. Maybe Houston onthe low, Yo, it's something else.
So when you hear guys like currentplayers and former players, when you
hear guys in their social life inHouston, j m A clearly guys having
a good time. I see guysout all the time. Is it harder

(40:15):
do you do? They say,it's harder to focus? Is it harder
to find a real woman in theirlife? Are they just having a good
time letting it rip. I thinkeverybody's different, to be honest with you.
You know, yeah, I've talkedto a lot of you know,
different players, and of course youknow, just like you hear like,
they have a lot of different stories. But you know, it just depends
on the type of person, liketheir distractions of course, and you have

(40:36):
to figure out how to balance that. And I think age plays a part,
like the younger the you are,or sometimes the less experience, experience
you have to dealing with those typeof situations, right, But I don't
know. I think it's different fromperson to person. But you know,
Houston's a beautiful place, different,a lot of diversity, diversity here and

(40:58):
uh, you know, being aleet, I'm sure has it has its
challenges in figuring out what's real andwhat's not real. You know what I'm
saying. People tell me all thetime, just in conversations around the city.
Stand, if I were a professionalathlete, I would do this,
I wouldn't do that, And Ihave to stop people you don't know what
to hear you were doing you don'tknow what because I'm all until you and

(41:19):
that in that situation and that youcan't. You can never assess it like
you don't know what you would do. And I'm be honest with you,
there's another kind of credle I liveby. And then we'll get out of
here. We will talk smactual footballon the other side, because we got
it. I want to hear fromJoe Mixon and I want to hear from
the Neil Hunter. Money only makesyou more of what you were before you
got it. If you're a humbledude and you get hit with some cake,

(41:43):
somebody drop a bag on you, you're gonna find a way to be
wealthy humble, right if you Ifyou acting like an ass and your bravado
is through the roof and you justoverle swag ashes, it's gonna you're gonna
be hell out here. So that'sjust something that I've seen come to Fruition.
Now. I've also seen some guysthat got hit with the bag and
they just became a totally different person. I didn't even recognize. It wasn't

(42:06):
no more different effects. But movingaround the city, I'm just telling you,
non disclose. Your agreements are amazing. Have you get your driver,
get your security detail in order takeall the proper precautions to protect yourself.
Young geez. I can tell youall some stories, but I don't have
time too. All right, let'skick off albtude find out of the show.

(42:27):
Jonathan Alexander got my mana moob Koye, Stan Fleet, Gordy's out.
We come back. Let's go hereto NRG. Johathan Alexander was there.
Let me hear what about this Joemixing? Do we feel better about having
mixing instead of Barkley and or DereckHenry? Kick that off on the other
side, Sports Talk seven ninety. Now, what's next? Next stop?

(42:49):
It's the next stop, the nextstep, Take the next step, next
stop, stop, next next stop. This team wants to be next is
next? Up with Tad Norfleeten,Chris Gordy. Let's see what's next next
sax. All right, let's goto World Clock in final hour of this

(43:10):
week's edition. This week's editions pluralup next up here on Sports Soalk seven
ninety you're home for Houston sports appreciateeverybody hanging out with us. If you
missed the first hour, you cango to Sports seven ninety dot com.
You can also go utilize the freeiHeartRadio app to my left, Jonathan m
Alexander Houston Chronicle appreciate JMA hanging outwith us, friend of the station,

(43:34):
friend of the show. Tenth overallpick from the twenty seventeen NFL Draft,
the Houston Texans select out of theUniversity of Louisville defensive end. My brother
Mobile Koye appreciate him hanging out aswell. I know I promoted that Jonathan
Wells, former Texans running back, was going to join us. Unfortunately,
Jay Wells had something come up inthe very last minute. He does in

(43:54):
his greetings, he says he'll joinus again at some point soon in the
future. We're talking exclusively Texans today. I understand that the Rockets have a
four game win streak cracking. Theyknocked the Wizards over the head last night.
Shout out to U of H.They mocked the floor with TCU,
So we want to make sure wementioned that year. There are some other

(44:15):
baseball nuggets. I don't really feellike talking about that right now, but
we'll get into it at some pointnext week. What I do want to
talk about is what has happened throughfree agency thus far. I we'll go
to the phone lines seven, one, three, two, one, two,
five seven ninety Michael lin heights,I got you give me one second
brother, All right, guys,we'll and if you didn't see the breaking
news. As of about an hourand a half ago, the Texans have

(44:37):
traded their first round pick. Thetwenty third overall pick has been traded to
the Minnesota Vikings. What did theTexans get back? Actually, the Texans
sen picked twenty three and a seventhround selection. They get back Minnesota's second
round pick this year, pick fortytwo. They get a sixth round pick,

(44:57):
pick one eighty eight this year, and they get a second round pick
next year. So that was thebreaking news on that front. The Texans
no longer as of right now havea first round selection. I would say,
guys, is a fair to saythat the mixed reviews on that deal?
Is that how you would categorizing Jay? Yeah, I think we're just

(45:17):
waiting to see. Is this thefinal? Is this how they're gonna operate?
Are they gonna settle with this number? Was it forty two pick?
I think correct? Or are theygonna use this to make another move in
the future. I think we'll haveto wait and see before we can fully
judge. But if they stay here, I wouldn't be necessarily in favor of
it, because I think they couldhave gotten more, could have got more

(45:39):
by holding on to that pick.Another quarterback needy team, which is what
Minnesota is who they signed. Theysigned Sam Donald to a one year deal,
so they got to have somebody forthe future. Mother, I think
you mixed reviews. You didn't necessarilysee a reason for Casiri to do this,
but you're willing to wait and see. Yeah, I mean, here's
a rhyming reason, so I alwaysshall see. But I don't think it's

(46:04):
gonna really help or hurt. Ithink it can help, and I use
the real estate example in the teno'clock hour with like just value. Every
GM that I've ever worked for orspoken with, they all say the same
thing. The value is in roundtwo, and especially in this year's class,
where you deep it wide receiver, corner and offensive linemen. All right,

(46:27):
the Texans can use some of allof that. So if I got
more second rounders, it helps tomanage the cap. And then I also
threw out the idea that maybe Nickis accumulating second round picks because he's about
to do something crazy with future firstdon't know, just the thought that I
had. Don't know. We'll seeanything else before we go to the phones,
guys, because I want to getover here to NRG get my man

(46:50):
Michael in the heights. Over here. Let's say, Mike, you still
my brother. I know you've beentrying to get with me this week.
We've been off. We got toget back and sync, brother, But
I haven't forgot about you, dog. It's all good. Ay. You
remember those Uncle Greg stories? Yeah, what happened to you this morning?
Was it any similar to any ofthose stories? Uh? Not not quite,
but it's in the neighborhood and it'snot quite the way unc Gray is

(47:14):
going on. But yeah, itwas quite interesting nonetheless, all right,
I mean, how are you feelingabout Casario wheeling and dealing? Man?
I really wish he would have heldon to that, and I, like
you guys just mentioned, I feltlike he could have got more because now
you know the Viking, what's theiroriginal first? You know, the original
pick? I mean top fifteen orsomething. So they're trying to move up.
I think they'll trade with like Patriotsor or something like that, you

(47:37):
know, because they need a quarterback. But I don't know, man,
I have a feeling now they're gonnathey're gonna look at some of those ut
players in the second round, likethat that receiver or maybe one of those
d tackles fall in the second round. We'll see, But I don't know,
man. When I got the alertfor the trade, my heart dropped
because I thought they traded for JustinJefferson because it was like, oh yeah.

(47:59):
I was like, oh. Iwas like, man, I'm about
to go buy some season tickets babynow, but that would be Yeah,
Justin Jefferson's so sick. Man.I don't know. I don't know honestly
how I'm feeling. Just I can'twait for the draft now. But it
sucks because now I have to waittill day two because you know, the
whole first rounds in the whole oneday. So anyways, hey, In,
then if I was a pro athletein the city, you know what

(48:21):
I'd be doing. I'd be ina lot of trouble. Michael, A
lot to be concerned about you, brother. Yeah, I've been a lot
of trouble. I feel like Joename is just all over the place.
Oh my god, Michael, andI heights appreciate your brother on a Friday.
Enjoy your weekend, all right? So, uh, you know what,
I throw that out and I haven'theard from y'all. Gordy knows how
I feel about that, and Iknow how he feels about that. I'm

(48:42):
willing to trust Demiko and Nick Casariountil they give me reason not to.
I don't love everything they did lastyear, but coming out of free agency
in the draft, I gave hima A up until the Elite Collins trade.
I gave Casserio a letting Sheldon Rankinsleave the Milie Collins trade and not

(49:04):
getting Eric Armstead, who signed threeyears fifty one million to go to Jacksonville.
I'm probably down to I'm probably ata B. Where's your grade for
a Casirio and de Miko right now? Yeah? I would say the same
like I would have been an Aafter before the milieue Collins trade. I
think the fact that you don't geta replacement defensive tackle, a guy who

(49:28):
is a bona fide starter, aguy who's a bona fide you know,
go get her to replace him.I think that drops the grade down to
a B as well. I thinkthat they still need a starter at defensive
tackle. Maybe two again depending onhow they played de Nico Artry, who's
played primarily at edge last year.So yeah, for that reason I give
him as well. Our one hundredpercent agree with you. You got a

(49:51):
grade for those guys over there sofar. Oh yeah, B plus B
plus as well. The little theI think they did. They're saving some
stuff for us the way they surpriseus in the draft last year. I

(50:13):
have a feeling gonna do something likethat again this year. That might get
an opportunity to trade back up andall that's them on the table too.
I said that to somebody else.Depending on how this thing falls, they
could trade back up into like thevery bottom of the first round of Kansas,
City of San Francisco. Maybe SanFrancisco does the masalad at the bottom
of the first round and they tradeback in and they grab somebody, depending

(50:34):
on how the board falls. That'sa good point by you, Q that
sounder there, if you would.Connor. We have breaking news in the
NFL, this time not involving theHouston Texans, but it does involve an
interior defensive lineman. Aaron Donald isretiring from the Los Angeles Rams. He

(50:57):
put a very worthy post on hissoul social media and what do he say?
Cheers to what's next? Extending abig thank you to the RAMS and
all of your fans for support overthe yet last ten years. Much love,
champagne, pop, prayer, hands, strong flex emoji, Aaron Donald

(51:19):
hanging it up as we wrap upthis segment. Guys, I think I
don't know that we've seen an AaronDonald before. We've seen undersized defensive linemen
all ten with the Rams. We'veseen guys undersized. We've certainly seen guys
explosive and powerful, but from theinterior as disrupt Like Warren Sapp was a

(51:45):
disruptor on the interior, but hewon't Aaron Donald. I mean Aaron Donald
was. That's different, different man, one of the best to ever played
the game, like on both sides. Like I think he's like top five
all time defensive lineman, defensive tacklesor defensive lineman. No, no,
defensive lineman. I think he's likewanted like two, like two top two.

(52:07):
So we're talking Reggie yeh. JJWatt is in that conversation. I
think Aaron Donald just I'm not gonnadisrespect it. I think JJ Whit is
one of the best ever, butAaron Donald was, Oh he's different different,
Yeah, and JJ White was too, But I'm just saying Aaron Donald,
he kind of changed the game.He kind of changed our perspective league

(52:28):
wide on how defensive players have viewedlike he could have like literally been MVP
like and this is not the compareto Jji. I just want to know
I throughout J White. That wasjust me going down my list of like
linemen that were impacted for Aaron Donaldlike to have like twenty sacks at the
defensive tackle possession exclusively to tackle. This is not a guy that did like
JJ. I'm on the edge inthe three four, but I'm into he

(52:51):
is every down. I'm in theshade the three or the zero tech and
he's getting after it. I usedto love to watch him play just like
he like he really perspective, likehe made it. He made it fun.
Defensive Rookie of the Year in twentyfourteen, eight times first Team All
Pro, ten Pro Bowls, madethe NFL's twenty tens All decadeeen good Lord,

(53:16):
three times Defensive Player of the Year, and of course a Super Bowl
champion with first Battle Hall of Fame. I mean that's easy he might as
well start getting fitted for his jacketnow, like we're done there. I
love seeing greatness and there were moments. There are moments I watch certain guys
and I'm like, that's one ofthe best to ever do that in the

(53:38):
history of humanity. Aaron Donald cansay, and everybody knows it, nobody
disputes it. Damn he was abad man, all right, twenty four
forst Fumblestart his career like he wasa game record unbelievable, Aaron d all
Right, we believe a guy thatcan be impactful in four some formals,

(54:00):
get some strip sacks. Perhaps let'scome back on the other side. Let
me hear from danil Hunna. Iwant to also hear from Joe Mixon.
I want to also get your thoughts, gentlemen on philosophy, Nick Cassio and
Demico, they painted themselves into acorner. How they gonna get out of
this? More to come about fortyfive minutes Fromain on a Friday. Next
Up, the legendary KB and Medo it again on Too Done, Next

(54:27):
to What's Next? As more ofNext Up continues now on Sports Talk seven
ninety Home of Your World Champion,Houston astros. All right, we're getting
some stuff done here in the SportsTalk seven ninety studios. Appreciate you rocking
with us. On about forty minutes. You'll hear Matt Thomas and Rossville yal
To Matt Thomas show a lot ofTexans talk today. I had a round

(54:50):
table. I still do have around table. Were missing one, but
we go keep things pushing. Myman Gordy is out today. We will
see how he wants to handle nextweek in his stead again holding things down.
Got Connadie mc governor on the otherside for usual in his production and
program a chair. Jonathan m AlexanderHouston Chronicle on the Texans Beat. JM.
This is your third year, thiswill be your third season, or

(55:13):
this will be your fourth season.Your third season coming up? All right,
Moby, how many years over thereat Reliance Lash NRG, was you
roam in the field? The fouryears Texans? Four year Texas sor ry
former tenth overall pick twenty seventeen. All right, we got some guys that
are gonna be playing in NRG forthe first time. Yesterday, JMA,
you were over there at NRG asuh Danil Hunter, Katie Native was introduced

(55:37):
to us as well as Joe Mixon. So let's go ahead and get this
first question out the way, DanilHunter, what jersey number you gonna with?
Bro? That's JJ's number. Youknow, he's done a lot with
that number, and I'm not evennamess with it. So to be able
to do what he's done with thatnumber for the community and the Texans,
you know, I'm just leaving thatunder him. So I decided to possibly
go with the number fifty five. All right, I wouldn't have a problem

(56:00):
if he'd worren ninety nine. He'salways worn ninety nine. He wore in
high school. I believe he worethat in college. I'm not sure.
I know he has won ninety ninesince he's been in the National Football League.
Would y'all have been tripping if heJM you No, I mean,
of course, you know, forfans and for JJ White out of respect,
he probably would have warned that askor yeah. But I don't think

(56:24):
JJ would have had a problem withit, based on what he put on
social media. No, I don'tthink jj W would have had a problem
with it either. All right, what else did I want to hear?
Let me look at let me hear, let me hear Hunter seven Hunter,
how do you feel about to Meko, I like that he understands the players,
you know, he understands players andhaving them being able to go out

(56:45):
there and play for each other asone unit. He brings in the family
as the family aspect of playing football, and it's not an individual sport.
You gotta go out there and playfor each other. So that's one of
the biggest part about it. Andhe understands the players as well, what
we can, what we wanted inorder to be successful, all right.
So one of the things that hascome up fellas as Nick Cassario and Domico

(57:07):
has navigated this free agency period. When I thought y'all said that everybody's gonna
want to come play for Domiko? Why why what happened with Saquan? Who
else did they They miss on?Uh? Eric Armstead obviously, and then
we were just to hole the runningback thing. So Danil Hunter appears to

(57:30):
be one of the first players tosay yeah, like Demiko, what he
represents and the fact that Daniel Huntertook less money to come here to Houston.
Jam a you over in the building. You got sources. Danil Hunter
the signing, the story is itis everything as it seems? Or you
want to add something to it?Wait? Wait, wait? Can you

(57:50):
repeat the question? Just saying likeDanil Hunter willing to take less appreciating what
Dimiko represents the culture? Is thatreal? Is what I'm saying? Yeah,
I mean he wanted the most guaranteedmoney, and he got the most
guaranteed money. So no one elsewould have been willing to offer forty eight
million guaranteed for the Neil Hunter basedon what you've heard, Well, he
said it out loud at the pressconference that he was trying to get the

(58:13):
most guaranteed money and Houston gave himthe most guaranteed money. So damn the
hometown team and play that. Connor, Well, go ahead, say to
Jama what do you say about fellin love with the team? What did
he say? Hunter? Oh,he went to the hundred number three?
What did he say? Connor?I remember last year during the playoffs,
I actually came to the game againstthe Bounce, and I liked what I

(58:34):
saw there so and just the homefeeling and how the guys were on the
field playing together for each other andwhere they swarmed the ball on defense that
was a big part of it.So I'm excited about that. He was
here for the game. Yeah,so he was here for the Browns playoff.
She lacking and so he was talkingabout the atmosphere and all that.
So what you staying j in ManAnd I don't want to put words him
out, but essentially this came downto guaranteed dollars. Yeah, I mean

(58:57):
I think what interested him him washim coming to the playoff game and hearing
what the Texans were building with theMiko Ryans. I think he liked what
they were doing. But ultimately itdid come down to who's gonna give him
the most guaranteed money. And Houstonwas also an attractive fit. It was
hometown. You know, he comeback home the k He can make an
impact in the community. He couldplay for a state no state tax,

(59:22):
he could he could play for ateam that was up and coming, you
could shine. So I think Ithink it was a little bit all of
that. But he said the guaranteedmoney was was was what you know very
much intrigued him. You forgetting thathe's just from here. Yeah, he
Katie high school. What is it? I can never say? Is it
rant something? What's Connor. What'sthe high school Morton Rance? Thank you?

(59:45):
I can never say that he withthe Morton Ring Street from me.
Yeah. Okay, So I getinto this with fans all the time,
and I know every player is alittle bit different. Jam May you've heard
this too. Mob. You've beena free agent twice, three times twice
twice? Did you take the mostmoney every time? Or was it more

(01:00:06):
situation fit? Walk me through thatprocess you been in. You you evaluate
everything, but the money factor isquite a bit. So you took the
most money every time? Yes?So I tell a story. I was
actually in New York with my man, Chris Canny. He's on you see
him on ESPN doing his thing, played eleven years in the league, started

(01:00:28):
all eleven things. Yeah, myman can't be doing his thing when he
was deciding between the Giants and thePackers and we're sitting in this restaurant with
the GM of the Giants, theagents there, but the Packers are calling,
like yo, we wanted Warner.Chris ends up turning down two million

(01:00:50):
dollar difference per year to stay inNew York and his mindset was the family's
originally from the well. He wasborn in New York in the city,
in the Bronx. But he's thinkingabout I'm playing for a blue blood franchise
am in Gotham City, the socialaspect, the business aspect. I'll make

(01:01:10):
that money up on a straight hand, like I'll make that money up.
And it worked, he hit. He's been in ESPN for a long time
now, so I've seen some guysnot do the money. It differs,
Yeah, but let's let's be clear. It's not like he was choosing between
the Carolina Panthers and and staying withthe Vikings like he was choosing. Who

(01:01:32):
was he choosing? There you go? Who was it? Who did it
come down to the Texans and whoelse? For Daniel Well, I don't
I don't know exactly who is theother teams were, but I'm just I
say that to say that the Texansare a team that's in the position to
win for a long time. Therewere going to be one of the top
if they if they stay healthy, they should be one of the top four
AFC teams next year, you know, just like they were last year.

(01:01:53):
Would think so that is also attractive. And even though you know where did
Burns end up going again? Hewent to Burns what to the Giants.
And by the way, talking aboutswinging missus, because that seems to be
a recurrent theme from some of theTexas fans. Is like Casio can't get
any of the guys he wants.Well, I don't know how true that

(01:02:13):
is. Apparently they tried to doa deal to get Burns coming into last
season, is what I was told, and they couldn't get it done.
And I don't know what the helptake two takes both sided tangles, so
you know, Carolina might not bewanting to do what. You know,
Carolina's a mess. They just are. They're a mess, all right.
So then we get the Neil Hunter. All right, so we get the

(01:02:35):
edge take care of. I madethis statement. I'm looking at my notes
now. If signing the Neil Huntercost us Eric Armstead, I'm okay with
that giving it. Armstead is hisage. He's coming off injury. He's
been nicked up here the last littlebit. And if you look at the

(01:02:57):
guys that Casario really signed, realtalk looking at how many games, how
many starts in the last two threeseasons for Aziz al Shia, the same
thing for Danil Hunter, the samething for Daniel Autry, danikah Artr.
Excuse me, like he's signing guysthat have played a lot of ball.
I mean, you bring up agreat point because Demiko Ryan's was very purposeful

(01:03:20):
in his words this offseason that heneeded guys to stay healthy, he needed
guys who were durable. And You'reright. These guys who they've signed have
all played sixteen seventeen games, havebeen durable throughout their careers. So I
think that was very an important piecefor him because Texans had so many injuries
this past year and they had torely on backup guys of the filling the
pace, and I think that's wherethey struggle sometimes. So the Texans do

(01:03:45):
make a signing yesterday. We knowthat Tim Settle Junior out of Virginia Tech,
he was in Buffalo last year,is a rotational guy. What are
we gonna do with this defensive tacklespot? Like if they had to play
a game today, I'm guessing itwould be fully how I'm trying to pronounce

(01:04:05):
it. How I say? Isaid, go get the kids from all
from Texas U T. You're gonnaput a rook rook in the How you
say the Brian Murphy Murphy. Yeah, but they got to trade up.
Yeah, you gave up twenty three. So he's not gonna fall now.
Unless you're saying to and Andre sweatthe other tackle, he'll be around in
the second round, we believe. Why can I not say Folk Foakassi?

(01:04:28):
So Foley would probably start, andthen who's it at the other tackle?
Kurt Heinish, Khalil Davis. Yeah, I don't see them. Settle Jr.
Those guys are all of those guys. I think they still have to
get one more. I think they'reprobably gonna end up waiting until and you
know, after free agency plays out, maybe there's some surprise cuts. That's
what usually happens around the draft.Good point by you on the cuts.

(01:04:49):
And I also heard two names rumored. How y'all feel about these two names
at the d tackle spot? UhTierre Tart was one. The Texans had
him for a little bit this lastyear. Kalais Campbell Kalais Is thirty eight
movie. I think Khalais Campbell isdefinitely a potential now they should look at.
I don't think Tart is going toreturn just to Texans got him midseason

(01:05:14):
and couldn't find a role for him. And I think he's he has interest
other where in other teams. Idon't see that coming back. The Texans
never made an official offer to EricArmstead. I just when I'm trying to
protect Casario and like stuff like thatcomes out. It's kind of like dumbass
Dallas. I'm watching the press conferenceyesterday for Derrick Henry. He says Dallas

(01:05:41):
never even called him. He liveseighteen minutes from the facility from the Star.
They never even called him. Sometimesthese teams, I can't explain it.
I don't know what's going on,but they be doing a lot.
All right. Let me hear fromthe running back Joe Mixon not only was
he in Houston, brother got anextension, Jonathan Alexander was in the building.
Will react to that. About thirtyminutes from now, we get you

(01:06:01):
to met Thomas Rossbery reality. Thisis next up Sports Talk seven ninety from
next stop that's set and back upnow down Door Places and Chris Gordy On's
next up on Sports Talk seven ninety. What's going on to the good people
of h Town, favorite city inAmerica for those that are visiting talking about

(01:06:24):
destinations, that's where Houston is.It's so funny, guys. I'll be
moving around city. Maybe all I'veseen it too. I'll be at some
places, especially on a Sunday, and I see people moving around the city.
It can be dinner time. Peoplegot their luggage. People going from
out Sunday Funday in Houston. Theygoing straight to the airport on those red
eyes. God bless Houston. It'sa beautiful place, all right. That's

(01:06:46):
why I believe eventually we'll get ourman, Joe Mixon, new running back
for the Texans. We know thatfor a seventh round selection. Joe Mixon
was traded from Cincinnati. He landswith us here. Everybody get relax,
kumba, y'all. But now wewanted to hear from the man himself.
Joe Mixon took to the podium yesterdaysaid a couple different things. Uh,

(01:07:10):
let's see here what we want totalk about, Joe Mixon. And now
I want to get you in onthis, JMA and you over there,
what do he promised Texans fans,Connor, I'm here to make sure we
all jael together. I'm at ahigh level. We all competing, and
we're gonna do that each and everyday, whether it's on the field,
off the field, I think thatyou know, like I said, what
we got in the in the inthe making here is gonna everybody. I

(01:07:32):
think Houston got nothing, but youknow, great things coming their way,
and you know to be proud witheverything that we're building here. All right,
Uh bruh, you got a contractextension. I'll get to those numbers
here in just a second, butI asked. We were joined by Moe
Egger of ESP and affiliate in Cleveland, member of the iHeart family of networks.

(01:07:57):
Mo Egger said, from a footballcharacter standpoint, Joe Mixon, solid
as they come. Joe Mixon, number eight, How you gonna help this
locker room? Joe one is aleader. I mean I've been a captain
of the last three years in Cincinnati. You know when I speak, I
lead, and you know, speakit with command. Guys. You know
they listen and they feed off ofme. And you know, I'm gonna

(01:08:18):
just continue to still be the sameperson that I've been since I walked in
out there when I was twenty yearsold. All right, JMA, you
were in the building. You heardall of that live. Joe Mixon gets
a three year deal thirteen million dollarsguaranteed. I think that number topsile base
value of twenty five and a half, so I think you can get to

(01:08:40):
what so I'm like twenty seven ish, give or take. But the thirteen
million guaranteed is what it is infull guarantees, which is quite reasonable.
I'll come back to that here injust a second. So just to be
clear, it's Joe Mixing. Wehave his rights for the next four seasons,
so we trade for him this yearin these three additional years, so

(01:09:00):
four years Joe Mixon, JMA.Did the contract extension surprise you? I
don't know how I feel about.I'm okay with the extension. I just
wasn't expecting the extension. I thinkI was just kind of a little bit
surprised, like they have to do. I mean, that's normal that when
you trade for a player who's onthe end of their contract, and you'll

(01:09:20):
usually extend a player. I can'twait to see what he does in this
system with us. Yeah, however, I was a little bit surprised that
he signed through twenty twenty seven.I'm sure that they'll have some out potential
outs. You know, he'll beI think thirty one by the time.
By the end of his contract, correct, and for running backs, you've
seen them kind of tell all.I'm not saying that's what's going to happen
to Joe Mixing, but historically that'swhat happened. So I was a little

(01:09:44):
bit surprised for that part. Butthat just shows us belief that they have
in him and the potential that theythink he can do with in Bobby Saw's
offense, we know he's a threatin the running game and the passing,
no question, so he could catchit and that's ideal with what Bobby says
needs. They also need somebody topunch the ball in the end zone.
He has twenty nine touchdowns in thelast three seasonsdown Texans haven't really been able
to score many rushing touchdowns or asmany as that they would like in recent

(01:10:06):
years, so I think he definitelyhelps elevate this offense. I'd be interested
to see what he could do towardswhen he gets to year thirty and thirty
one, but we're a little bitaway from that. Clearly, Joe Mixing
is an upgrade over Devin Singletary, all due respect, I'm okay moving on
from Devin Singletary mobi defending a backlike Joe Mixon, who does he remind

(01:10:30):
you of? And like so rightnow? For example, his average annual
value for Joe Mixing from a runningback standpoint is seventh in the NFL.
He's averaging around nine million dollars ayear. I would rather have Joe Mixing
at nine million dollars a year thansay Kwan Barkley at twelve million dollars a

(01:10:51):
year or Josh Jacobs at twelve milliondollars a year. Now, that's me
when you're trying to defend a backthat can total rock inside, he can
hit the perimeter. Somebody questioned hislong speed. My Man mo Eggar from
ESPN in Cincinnati says Stan, Idon't He's not breaking away from anybody.

(01:11:12):
I haven't done the homework on that, but just defending backs that especially being
a defensive end dudes trying to chipyour pass pro all the things. Just
when you evaluate Joe Mixing and whatvalue you think he brings to the Texans,
I think it brings quite a bit. You don't look like you like
him, nah, I've not alwaysbeen a big fan of his, but

(01:11:36):
he's grown to me in the lastcouple of years. Like you know,
from fantasy football. You're not theonly one. A lot of people listening
gonna play fantasy for I think ChrisGordon said that he had Joe Mixing as
a fantasy back. So it remindsme of a kind of a little bit
of a mixture of like a Shadyand Aaron Foster, kind of like together

(01:11:59):
Aaron Fall with a little bit ofShady McCourt Philadelphia, Shady McCarty right right
in the sense that with a littlebit of Bell in there, so you
got some power from Bell, yougot a little shifted from Shady, little
bit be able to catch the footballlike Shady, and then the patience like
Foster, which I think goes underrated. I remind you Zach Taylor, the

(01:12:23):
head coach of Cincinnati, got hiscoaching prioress from Sean McVay for the l
A Rams. Sean McVay got hisrunning game from the Shanahans. So the
system is going to sound quite similar. And one thing I do think that
a lot of people don't notice thathe does. He's good at picking up
the past protection. I brought thatup yesterday on Cincinnati Radio, like we

(01:12:44):
still gotta understand protecting. CJ.Stroud has to be no matter what.
CJ should not be missing games gettingconcussed. He is looking at you,
Juice scrugs allowing Quinn Williams not myquarterback to the ground like that exactly.
I want to hit this other cutbecause there was something I wanted to ask
you about, jam May. JoeMixon spoke to his emotional departure. Let

(01:13:09):
me just mixing number seven leaving Cincinnati. It was definitely shocking. You know,
I took that twenty four to fortyeight hours to hurt. You know,
you know it was it was,it took. It took a while,
and I'm still you know, havingyou know, emotional feelings about it.
But we bought the city of Cincinnati. We got it lit back again,

(01:13:30):
and oh you know, I planedon bringing that same thing here.
You know, these fans, I'msure you know they got a taste of
it last year, but I feellike, well, what we got in
the making, man, I thinkthat it's going to be a great thing.
You were there, Jonathan, Ihave heard it said that it got
a little awkward right there because youkind of saw Joe reflecting on I mean,

(01:13:57):
think about it. Two things canbe true, true, he can
be appreciative and really liked the Mikoand respect what the Texans have done.
Clearly, we played Cincinnati his pastyear and beat him. We know that
Cincinnati. I think we got tosee him again in twenty twenty four.
So I think it's you got thatpart that I do think he's appreciative of
a contract extension, especially given howhe came into the league with some controversy

(01:14:18):
right right, but clearly his headand heart is still in Cincinnati. How
did it feel being in the buildingwith him? Yeah, I didn't get
that, since I guess maybe moreI'm a little bit understanding. He spent
the first seven years of his careerin Cincinnati. That's where his home was.
He probably didn't think he was leaving. He probably thought he had a
chance to sun an extension. Sowhen he trade him all of a sudden,

(01:14:38):
it's like like dang, Like youknow, I thought he still has
love for him. So I guessI understood it, and maybe I didn't
sense the awkwardness. But at thesame time, he's also, like you
said, he's excited with this opportunitywith Houston, and Houston has an up
and coming team as well, justlike Cincinnati does with a young quarterback over
there. So I think he's excited, but he's definitely hurt because that was

(01:14:59):
a team that he spent the whodrafted him, who invests a lot,
who he thought he probably going tobe there for a long and all of
the controversial I say all of that. You know, there's stuff that has
been dismissed. We know what happenedin ou and all of that. But
they took a chance, they tooka chance on him, and then he
was Let's be clear, this isa former The man was in the Pro
Bowl in twenty twenty one. Thisis a guy that has been what he's
rushed over one thousand yards four times. Like, this is a guy they

(01:15:23):
went to a Super Bowl week. They went to Super Bowl with Joe Mix
and running the football. He's styleof running is good. Let's close out
this segment by I'm gonna ask youa mobile to volunteer a little bit of
yourself. When the Texans decided theywere moving on from a mobile coyer,
how did it feel like? Didyou need a week a month? I

(01:15:45):
think every player ultomatically assumes that theteam that drafted is where they're going to
spend the rest of all their alltheir career. Is that assumption? Is
that that fake illusion? And thenthe business the business side, Yeah,
you have to under standard and andin my situation, we we have switched
from four to three through three threefour defense and so obviously my position gets

(01:16:10):
extracted out. J J. Heexcels and he's he's he's a three four.
That's right, because you they moveon from you, and then they
draft that next year because you're runningthe three four j J is perfect for
the three four. Yere clearly fourthree they they uh uh the defensive coordinator.

(01:16:32):
Wait, Phillips, he got thejob three three four guys, so
it all made sense. I was, he got the job he does.
Switching to a three four defense,my position gets distracted out. JJ's uh
gets drafted. Yeahs. It's howlong is part of the part of the
get part of the game. Andthen it was during the lockout year two,

(01:16:57):
Oh, I didn't think about theehow long did it take you before
it really set in? Because youleft here and went to Chicago or Chicago,
so like how long did it takefor you? It was weird because
like I said, we were wewas a lot out yes, we weren't.
We weren't in the we weren't.We weren't in the building and nothing,
so all of the just happened likeit's almost like on paper on paper.

(01:17:17):
Yeah, so you're not really inthe facility doing the thing. That's
a weird. It was a weird, weird, weird, yeah, because
because the whole all season was different. It was weird. It was like
we were we were not in thein the in the in the in the
facility right where everything. Everybody wasdoing their own thing. And so then
almost like the Kobe. Then youcome back and it's like, hey,
so we're gonna go different way.And I was like, okay, so

(01:17:39):
it is what it is. It'slike getting ready for teams and then Chicago
and one of one of our servicesand I was like, let's go.
It's uh And I got to getout on way over. They're gonna be
mad at me. But I justsay this as someone that has been in
the conference room with the general managerswhen they are making these decisions. Business
is it's hard, man, becauseyou spend your life as a scout,

(01:18:04):
like and you try not to getto attached, but you do cheer for
certain dudes, and it's like I'veseen gms go hey, great practice today,
a great game, Love you, bro, And then we get in
the meeting literally two minutes later.I'm not paying that m effort. He's
got to get out of his lockerroom. Yeah, but that's just like
that's the biz. So it's allall right, let's come back, let's

(01:18:25):
close out. We'll wrap up aFriday before we get you over to Matt
Thomas and ROSSVILLEA. Next up continueson your fault. Listen to Sports Talk

tenth o'raw twenty seventeen man as anNFL veteran residing out on it and going

Closing remarks, Jma, I'll startwith you. It could be anything,
any position player thoughts. Obviously wehad to trade this morning. Caserio
gives up the twenty third selection fora second rounder and a sixth rounder this

(01:19:32):
year and a future second rounder fromMinnesota. Caserio also gives up a seventh
rounder. What's up with Caserio inseventh rounders? He's got three different exchange
with three different deals this year involvingseven rounders. Yours just closing remarks,
Jama, Yeah, I just thinkwhen I look at what the Texans have
done in free agency, I thinkthey've done a great job in building that

(01:19:54):
edge. They're going to have afeared edge with will Anderson, Artree and
Danil Hunter. I just think theygot figure out the inside, getting pressure
on the quarterback up up the middle. Your number one concern right now,
that's my number one concern. Theygot to figure out a way. I
don't I think what they have nowis not going to help out enough.
It is not enough for them tobe what Demko wants them to be.

(01:20:16):
Same same here. I think let'sgo get the to get out said for
U t to the tackle, Sweator Murphy, either one of those Murphy
Murphy. You want to specifically goup to get Murphy. How does Caserio
do it? It's not impossible, but how do you do it when you
just gave up your twenty third pick? So don't I don't know how he
climbs back high enough to go geta buyer Murphy the second defensive tackle you,

(01:20:41):
I guess you hoping Braid. Nobodyelse thinks about it. I just
hope that he falls. I mean, somebody's gonna fall. It happens every
year. I will say this.I understand clearly, like that's probably number
one at this point. I understandthat. But if you're telling me I
could plug in Kalais Campbell on aone year deal at starter level money and

(01:21:04):
I can lean through, I can'tget out of my head. When Casserio
told us going into what's that goinginto the combine salary cap in two year
increments, he is being very cautiouswith the cap because I think they got
power moves. They really want tomake next year, So he's trying to
mi mindful. He knows that theNico contract is coming, Like he knows

(01:21:28):
here pretty soon, what we're gonnado with Petrie, what you're gonna do
with Stingley? What do we do? So I think he's being mindful of
two years, I still say,and I'm gonna down this hill. I'm
not like all the money's been ondefense, guys, who is he paid
on offense? They just gave reasonablemoney to Joe Mixon and an extension and

(01:21:50):
Dalton Schultz. Ain't nobody else's offensegetting money outside of the offensive line.
I would love to see them goget another receiver, if that's a Mike
william on a reasonable deal or somethinglike that. Maybe they're gonna draft the
receiver. We all know that. But I still think there's a top end
guy. They're gonna need plays. They still need playmakers. See me and

(01:22:11):
you disagree on that. I thinkas long not health does play a part,
I think I think as long asthey have Tank Dell and Nico Collins
along with nor Brown, As longas those guys and if you add in
a guy in the draft, Ithink they're solid. I don't think they
need to spend more on a ridereceiver. Mike Williams hadn't been healthy throughout
his charge's career, so that's whatthat would be a risk you, Ruyn,

(01:22:31):
So I think the draft wide receiver, but I don't think they need
to spend That's why I disagree withyou. All right, last one real
quick thumbs up thumbs down Justin Simmonsat safety, former Bronco, former All
Pro as a textan, I'm saying, I'm kind of in the middle.
I don't know. I don't haveeither thumbs up. Go get Justin Simmons.

(01:22:54):
I think the safety market is sorobust that you could find not that
level of play, but you youcan find somebody to back up Jimmy five
six years in the league, maybeeven longer than that. Not sure,
Ben Roie, all right, wegot a rap Fellers mobile. Cooyer Jonathan
m Alexander of the Houston Chronicles standNorthfleet. Appreciate Connedy mcgovernor's efforts as well

(01:23:15):
