Texans fans watching Sunday Night Football held their breath when running back Joe Mixon left the game in the third quarter of a 19-13 win over the Chicago Bears with an ankle injury. Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards used the now-banned hip-drop tackle to bring down Mixon, who went into the locker room to receive treatment but returned later in the third quarter, only getting seven snaps the rest of the game. KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson joins Next Up to recap the Texans becoming the only 2-0 team atop the AFC South and to preview the Week 3 road matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Mixon "really is day-to-day," but even if he can't go against the Vikings, "the good news is that you're not losing him for the majority of the season," Wilson said. Wilson also discusses the possible repercussions for Azeez Al-Shaair punching Bears running back Roschon Johnson and Jarrett Patterson filling in for center Juice Scruggs.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Week two, when the NFL has come and gone. Sunday
Night football Texas beat Bears nineteen thirteen. Aaron Wilson heard
from Demico Ryans over at NRG yesterday. Saw Aaron in
the press box on Sunday night. We're gonna have to
speed through this one, Wilson. Thank you for joining us
this morning. Forgive me for asking you to modify your schedule.
I thank you for doing so. Oh no, all right,

(00:23):
hip drop tackle. A Z's gonna get fined. Let's start there.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Hip drop tackle. I think the league will review it.
And even though they didn't make the call, I think
there's a good chance for TJ. Edwards linebackers made the
tackle gets a fine. It looks like a classic hip
drop tackle, which they've been really trying to make a
point of emphasis, but obviously didn't make that call. A

(00:50):
Z's clearly threw a punch and I had this pulled
up on my computer, so I think the fine it's
over thirty thousand dollars and you can appeal it. But
you know, sometimes they let these things go when they
miss the call, but they do tend to support their referees,

(01:11):
and that's one of the things that sometimes leads to no,
no fine, so it can be unpredictable. It's not a
hard and fast. Oh that's a punch. There's the fine.
It doesn't always work that way. It can go more
than one way. But yeah, it's actually thirty nine, five
hundred and one for first offense and second is seventy nine

(01:33):
thou and four dollars, So we'll see how that goes. So, yeah,
a couple of things going on there with the league office.
We'll be heard from at some point this week.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
Aaron, what about what's the latest on Joe Mixon. We're
just talking about life. If they have to go without
in this week. I know the MRI said they avoided
long term injury, but is this still kind of up
in the air if he could be.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Back this week. Yeah, he really is day to day.
I talked to multiple people about this throughout the day
yesterday and a few this morning, and my understanding of
the field of to see how he feels tomorrow if
he can practice, but there's a chance that he could
play this week. Here, this isn't looking like a real
long term injury. One person said, yeah, he's gonna be good.

(02:18):
We'll see. I mean, you know, it's a little unpredictable.
How does the swelling all those things feel is okay
when he takes it up, and then just the recovery process.
But it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't practice Wednesday
and they try it on Thursday. So if he's not out
there or if he can't play this week, the good

(02:39):
news is that you're not losing him for the majority
of the season or a long term part of the
season or anything like that. Maybe it's a one week
deal or less, and that really is still to be determined.
On a good news front, they should get Damian Pierce back.
He was close to being ready for the last and

(03:02):
thought he played well against the Colts. And then you
have Cam Akers still healthy. I actually watched that play
on the fumble, you get a hold of the ball,
but it was a helmet helmet hit. So they missed
a lot of calls and then they made a lot
of calls. See, I mean the Texans are kind of
slopping again. Twelve penalties. An interesting night for the officials.

(03:24):
I got to think that they're not getting high grades
from New York on this one. M J. Stewart will
be back. Unclear if you Scruggs, we'll make it back
for this week still, but he's going to groin injury.
And there was a difference without him in the rum
blocking having Jerry Patterson in there, just not as much
push for Joe Mixon.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
All Right, we got to wrap up here in just
a little bit. Let's try and get a rapid fire
if we could. And I'm thinking about what are the
players saying, I feel like what it looked like, what
we thought it would look like going into week two.
I'ming out of week one they get the win. What
are the guys saying.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Oh, I mean, they feel like they're barely scratching the
service of their potential. On offense, They're very encouragement what
happened on defense, especially taking the football away and the
pass rush that they generated by dialing up the blitz,
and it looked like a totally different defense, aggressive attacking,
you know, not allowing the deep throws that they did,
the explosives to the Colts. Nanty Richardson encouraged by the defense. Offense,

(04:30):
I don't think they're worried about it. I think they
just feel like they left a lot of players out there.
I mean, uncharacteristic things like Tank Bell dropping a couple
of passes globe one I thought could have been a touchdown.
He had one catch for minus three yards or four targets.
So you'll change that around, getting more involved, get him
going the way he can play. And all of a sudden,
you're complimenting Nico Collins right now. The only people that

(04:53):
I could say, well, yeah, they had a big game.
You know, CJ. Strout played well, played within the offense,
and Nico Collins he was a out there. But I
thought other guys didn't do enough. And the run blocking
simply wasn't there. When you rewatch it, you see that
they don't get to the second level. They didn't block
the way they did against the Colts. And Joe Mixon

(05:16):
had a choice get tackled for the losses or just
salvage the plays and get what you can, and I
think that's what he did. And it just really you know,
he didn't have those opportunities and it shows the difference.
And you know that's why they talk about the offensive
line and this wasn't the best game for them that's said.
He got credit to the Bears. Andrew Billings he dominated. Yeah,

(05:44):
he's a football player. That that's how you play. That's
how you two gap and clog it up in the
middle there. And really people should take notes young because
of alignment. That's how you should play the run. Uh yeah.
Really a lot of respect for him. And they're a
big linebacker. I mean, how many six fives or fifty
pounds line runs to me that one are out there?

(06:06):
If you're good players on the other side of the ball,
I'd be remiss. And I mentioned him Jalen Teacher was
sticking people out there, and that's actually want to see
you your nickel. Those are good, clean, hard hits, no
doubt about Aaron.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
We got a rap, brother, But I thank you so
much for your time. We'll get you back this week.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
Brother.
