Middlekauff REACTS to Colorado football star Shedeur Sanders going undrafted in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. John questions the bold move the New York Giants made when they traded back into the first round to select Jaxson Dart. John also reacts to the Rams-Falcons trade, believing it is a major win for Les Snead and Sean McVay. Finally, John discusses how the majority of first round picks drafted came from SEC or Big 12 programs, and how that will be the pipeline for mid-major stars to break into the NFL Draft landscape.

Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume. What is going on? Just spent feels like
ten hours, but I think it was two. With Coward,

(00:22):
we hopped on right after the Cowboys picked the guard
from Bama and went for the entire first round, so
you can go check that out. We just reacted pick
after pick after pick, a couple of trades in there,
and as we sit here right now, it's eight point
fifty three Pacific Standard time. Shador Sanders was not selected

(00:43):
in the first round obviously, Jackson Dart was, so we'll
kind of talk about that. I'll hit on a couple
other things. I just wanted to get a couple more
thoughts out. I put a lot out with Colin. It's
been it's been a long It's a long day because
you kind of wait for it like a like a
football game, and then it's like a slow bleed throughout
the draftft. But the first round is always really fun,
so was the second round. Third day's a little tough,

(01:04):
but tonight was really really fun. Had a couple whoa
didn't see that coming, which always adds to the draft
is when something happens that nobody saw coming. And I
will hit on that off the top, actually, because I
think we really learned a valuable lesson about how you
can't believe a damn thing. But before we dive in

(01:26):
to anything, NFL Draft twenty twenty five in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
You know I gotta tell you about my friends. My
partner is the official ticketing AAP of this podcast, Game

I might have dabbled a little bit on the Washington
Capitals to win the Stanley Cup, so I'm dialed into

(01:48):
the NHL. We got baseball in full throttle, you got
concert seas and comedy shows. Do something fun and do
it on us. Game Time best ticketing out. I've used

We really heard the last couple of days that the
New York Giants were not gonna take shad Or Sanders.
I saw Adam Scheffer say it this morning. Do not
expect the New York Giants at pick three to take
Shador Sanders. But if I told you that they traded

(02:31):
back into the twenties, I'd be like, I bet that's
when they pulled the trigger.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
And they did.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
They traded back into the twenties and they just took
Jackson Dart. Now I don't necessarily agree with this. I
think Shador Sanders is a better player than Jackson Dart,
but like the league disagrees, because we have been talking
about this player really for years. He obviously plays on
a team with the Heisman Trophy winner guy that you know,

(02:58):
Jacksonville just moved up three spot. They traded a future
first round pick to draft a guy. He does have
a position. He plays them both, but like we don't,
and they're probably given a press conference right now, they'll
probably try to play him at both. Whatever. Who's just
one of the most unique players we've ever seen in
the draft. Colorado Dion Sanderses' son does not get drafted,

(03:19):
And now you start looking at it like Titans aren't
gonna take him? Are the Browns gonna take him? Does
Jimmy HASLM get involved? I mean, they have the two
first round picks next year. It feels like that would
be their move to get a quarterback. But maybe they
pulled the trigger early in the second round. The Giants
now no longer need a quarterback. A lot of these
bad teams. What was a shitty situation for Shador in

(03:41):
terms of like trying to generate buzz We had heard
forever and I just believe it. You hear something enough times,
it shows you the power of like propaganda, because during
the draft season something can just get thrown out there.
Enough is like Mike Tomlin loves Shador the fiftieth time
you hear it, you're like, God, Mike to or Sanders,
that's his guy. And the Pittsburgh Steelers who don't have

(04:04):
a quarterback. Aaron Rodgers is swimming in the ocean. He's
got personal issues, he's got a new dog. Who knows
if he's even gonna play. They don't know. He's told
everybody like do not wait for me? And the Pittsburgh
Steelers like, yeah, we're gonna just take a position player.
Was gonna take a take alignment. It's like, so Mike
Townland liked him, but like not that much, you know,

(04:24):
didn't didn't didn't like love love them. And the Rams
is like, oh, could the Rams take a quarterback? They
got the Atlanta Falcons, who I'm sorry, have no clue
what they're doing. If the trust me, I've purchased some
poor stocks, there is one right now that it It
couldn't be any more in the red. I would love

(04:46):
to get out. I'm just so far in the red
I might as well just write it out a little bit.
If the Atlanta Falcons were a stock, I would short
to live and bleep out of them. And the Atlanta Falcons.
I think I told this to Colin. I think the
Rams plan on taking a player. Now. I don't necessarily
think they were gonna take quarterback, but I would imagine
they had some discussions and they got a call out
of the blue from the Atlanta Falcons that were like, hey,

(05:09):
how about a twenty twenty six first round pick. Wait
to trade up in the top couple of picks next year. No, no, no, Like,
we're gonna trade in the mid twenties right now and
take a defensive lignment. Like, okay, I mean the Jacksonville
trades crazy, but at least they get an awesome prospect. Like,
I think that moves nuts. I think anytime you're a

(05:30):
new GM and a new head coach, you do not
know your team. So to make crazy moves without knowing
your team. Andy Reid, John harbaughd Dan Campbell, Sean McVeigh, like,
these guys know their team, so if they want to
get aggressive and move up. Years ago, when Dimitrov traded
up for Julio Jones and Belichick told him not to
do it, he knew his team. He had been the

(05:52):
GM of the team for a while. Newest strengths, newest
weaknesses just understood like what he had to work with.
When you're brand new on the job and you haven't
coached one day in OTA's let alone a real game,
you can't know your team. It's it's literally impossible. So
to make a big move and you know me, I'm
all for being aggressive is borderline malpractice. I think it's insane.

(06:18):
Now you would say the Atlanta Falcons, you know, know
their team, but to trade up to the mid twenties
and give a first round pick the following year for
like the six or seventh linemen on the board is insanity,
Like I thought the Jacksonville trade was crazy. My jaw dropped.
I think it's insanity what the Atlanta Falcons did. Like
it's not that Shador Sanders didn't get picked, Like that's

(06:39):
not that crazy, like we've been hearing for a while. Like, guys,
he might not get selected if the Saints don't take him,
if the Giants don't take them, we all assumed the
Steelers would. Well, clearly we had been lied to that
wasn't true. He might like the guy not enough to
take him at pick twenty one, and he's gonna go
in the second round where historically, like I've been watching
the I'm old enough to remember when guys used to

(07:02):
get drafted in the second round And Derek Carr became
an immediate starter for the Raiders and within a couple
of years they were a playoff team. Andy Dalton drafted
in the second round, immediate starter for the Cincinnati Bengals,
I think, went to the playoffs like five or six
straight years. Jimmy Garoppolo into the second round a couple
of years in, became a starter, highest paid player the league,
forty nine ers let him to Super Bowl. Like I

(07:22):
said this the other day, Listen, it is it's cool
to get drafted really high. From a financial standpoint, you
make way more money. That's that's undisputable. So if you're
Abdull Carter, you would rather get drafted to pick three
than be Jalen Walker at pick fifteen because you're gonna
make way more in your media contract. But that does
not guarantee your success, like Abdull Carter. Like I'm pro

(07:45):
Abdual Carter. I think he's an elite prospect, but like
if he's gonna become a star player, like he has
to do it. Like in the NFL, you got to produce.
This is in the NBA where once you're drafted highs
like love this guy's name even though he's always injured,
give him his max. That's not the way the NFL works.
Half this first round will not have their fifty year
option picked up. Like the meritocracy kicks in pretty quickly.

(08:06):
You get a little bit of a scholarship when you're
a really high pick, but eventually, like within the first
year or two, like you got to produce to stay
on the field. And it does not determine your success
or failure. We see, guys, I've been going to training
camps in the NFL for almost fifteen years now, and
I can't tell you how many times like I can't
wait to watch the second round pick and you get

(08:27):
there at practice and the sixth rounder looks better. Or
I can't wait to watch the first round pick and
you get there in the third round, or it looks
like the star. So no one knows, no one, We're
all taking educated guesses. It makes this fun and I
enjoy it, You enjoy it. We all enjoy it. But
nobody knows. So shador I would imagine they had a

(08:47):
decent gauge of like this was a possibility. But this
does not determine his success or failure, just like for
all these guys. I mean, think how lucky some of
the guys that went in the twenties. Malik Starks, who
is obviously or Malachi Starks, excuse me, it is from Georgia.
All he knows is winning and he just gets to
go to the Baltimore Ravens. John Campbell. They had a

(09:10):
down year at Alabama. When they win ten games, you
know all that guys used to is going to the playoffs,
competing for Natty's he gets to go to the Eagles.
Like the teams that draft in the twenties in a
draft like this get guys and we saw it last year,
like these are the people that are gonna play in
the playoffs. Like I like Travis Hunner a lot, and
I would have taken him the top couple picks as well.

(09:31):
I wouldn't have traded up for him like they did,
but big time prospect. He's I think Jacksonville's not gonna
be any good and he's gonna play in games that
are not gonna matter, you know, Ashton Genty, Like, I'm
pretty sure they're gonna be the fourth best team in
that division. So even if he's an awesome player, one,
if you're down a lot in games, your defense not

(09:52):
that good. Do they have an explosive offense, everyone can
kind of focus on you. We saw it was Sakwon Barkley,
who is a much better prospect. It's difficult you get
to go to these good teams. I mean, Colin and
I were like, of course, Jim Harbaugh gets one of
the best running backs in a draft loaded with running
backs for the Chargers. So now the Chargers have a

(10:13):
good offensive line, they got multiple running backs, they got
a good young quarterback. They have a really good defense,
an excellent defensive coordinator. They're gonna be good. Like the
teams in the twenties, it feels like always draft so
much better than teams in the single digits and the
high teens, because it's like some teams don't know what
they're doing. It's why they always draft high and the

(10:35):
same teams. Like how long have the Ravens been been
drafting between picked twenty four and thirty the entire internet age, right,
the Chiefs like one thing Andy will do is he
will take swings on players because they're drafted the end
of the first round. Like I thought, I expected them

(10:55):
to go with the running back, and they went with
the tackle from Ohio State, who I think had some
question marks, you know, on off the field injuries and
off the field. I don't know if exactly like he's
a you know, perfect right up in terms of the
intangible stuff, but from a talent standpoint, there's no disputing
the ability. And last year their offensive line wasn't good enough,

(11:18):
so it was worth the risk. And sometimes you've got
to take some risks. Right, But I think there's a
balance of like taking a risk at the end of
the first round and drafting a guy like that and
making a trade like the Atlanta Falcons made. I just think,
under no circumstances can you go from trading a future
first round pick for a guy that's I would say,

(11:41):
universally not viewed upon as a top five player at
his position in the draft. Literally, there were four or
five guys at his position. They were drafted ahead of
him in the round. I said this to Colin, and
I'm sure we'll find out over the next twenty four hours.
But I would be stunned if a team is ever
in the Internet age, maybe this happened in the seventies

(12:02):
and the eighties, a team has gone from the middle
of the second round traded up to the middle or
I mean the middle of the twenties. So not like
in the top ten, going to like pick twenty four
to twenty five given a future first round pick for
a non quarterback, and I don't even know if it's
ever happened with a quarterback. I think that's insanity. I
felt good about this last year when now I picked

(12:23):
the Saints. I was wrong, but I said, the Atlanta
Falcons are not gonna win that division. I feel like
that again is don't think they know what they're doing,
especially if you're the Rams. Can you imagine getting that
phone call? I thought about this when Cleveland got the
phone call. So wait, you want to go from five
to two and you're gonna give us a second round
pick and next year's first round pick? Like, are you sure?

(12:46):
Did Kevin Stefanski and Andrew Berry look at each other like,
pretend we need to talk about this so we actually
think this is a tough discussion or did Jimmy Haslam
just go say yes, say yes. I can't imagine, and
I get Raheem Morris and Sean McVeigh are close buddies,
they're good friends, close pals. The phone call when what's

(13:11):
his name? The general manager from Atlanta, Terry Fono, calls
less Need and Sean McVay, and they got them. Who knows,
they're probably like the who even knows where they're having
the draft this year, probably out in the middle of
the ocean in the Pacific. That's some island. And they
get that call, that on that phone and they're on
speakerphone and they're looking at each other like, is this

(13:31):
guy serious? Are are we speaking the same language? Are
these guys on drugs? This guy's take an edible? Are
are they taking edibles? In Atlanta? The Arts are blank
pass away. Is no one watching what's going on in
the Atlanta draft room? And then you look and because
even the Giants like what they had to trade for

(13:53):
Jackson Dart, which I think is pretty bold because more
than likely, if I was a betting man, you'd go, well,
that Joe Shane and Brian day Ball are not gonna
be there in twenty twenty six. So whoever the new
coach and GM come in, they're gonna have to like
Jackson Dart's gonna be on their team. Now. They drafted
him in the twenties, not picked three or four, so

(14:15):
there's a little less pressure, but still like that, if
you're coming into a job, there is some pressure to
pretend to like the guy. Typically that happens in those
in those interviews. Once I fired day Ball and Shane,
it's like the owner's gonna want you to be at
least pro Jackson Dart and Jackson Dart well, you know
he's a transfer guy from USC to all miss been

(14:38):
around Lane seeing some shit kind of a weird room.
I mean Russell Wilson, Like, if I'm Shador, I'm kind
of glad that I don't have to go into a
room with Jamison and Russell. Jameis is cool, but the
Russell Wilson experience, like I just would want no part
of that. And the thing if I'm Jackson Dart or
if I was Shador and I had gone into that room,

(15:01):
I'm gonna think I'm better than Russell Wilson pretty quickly.
Now Jamis is kind of a roller coaster ride, but
pretty clear, like Jamis will just be the backup, whether
that's Russell starting or the rookie starting. But are they
gonna win a lot of games? Russell Wilson. The Pittsburgh Steelers,
who are a much better run organization, have a much
better team. Once it got cold outside that they couldn't

(15:21):
win with the guy, and now you take Russell to
a much worse team. I love them the league neighbors,
who doesn't. I mean, he's a freak talent. He's probably
one of the more talented wide receivers to come out
of the draft in recent memory. Doesn't mean it's gonna
be the best player, but just pure talent. Got some
concussion issues last year. You know, I think their defense.
People keep talking about their defensive line. Yeah, Dexter Lawrence's sweet.

(15:43):
Kevon Thibodeau. That's good. Brian Burns good player, but given
what they're paying him, what they gave up like a
little overrated. The NBA eighty two game grind is done
and now the real fun begins. The NBA Playoffs are

Speaker 1 (17:46):
And then you just see like the Eagles, just how
it's really not a fair fight. I think right now,
if you're an Eagle fan, I don't want to say
like Kevin Durant Warriors, because that was truly it wasn't fair.
Like as long as they were healthy, they were a
lock to win the championship, and they won two straight
and then it took like an Achilles' injury and a

(18:07):
clay acl for them not to beat the Rafters. So
football is not that. But I do think as we
sit here right now, they bring back Bond. You know,
Jalen Carter could really take a next step another year
with Fangio. Their DB's are really good. You add John Campbell,
the linebacker from Alabama. The only guys they draft are

(18:28):
big school guys. And Colin and I we rattled off like,
look at this first round. There's a Boise State and
there's you know, a Colorado in there. Now, Colorado got
it because of Dion if it wasn't like he would
have been at Florida State. That's where Travis Hunter was
supposed to go. The entire first round is basically Ohio State, Michigan, Bama, Georgia.
I mean, this isn't this isn't rocket science and when

(18:52):
all else fails, I would just draft one of the
guys from the top four or five programs, especially with
nil Like the best players are all going to be
consolidated at the top twelve ish programs because they have
all the money and they have all the resources to
get these guys, and even if you are a good player,
I'm just gonna steal you away, like what we've seen

(19:14):
these last couple of years with Jent staying at Boise
State and Mitchell two years ago at Toledo, and I
would put Drake May as well at North Carolina. Those
guys are going to be outlier situations. Typically. I think
those type players are not going to turn down these offers,
and they're gonna end up at Oregon, at Texas, at

(19:34):
Ohio State, at Michigan. So it wouldn't shock me if
in the next couple of years we have a draft
that is literally like five schools. It's just like Michigan,
Ohio State, Texas, Georgia, Bama. You know, if USC ever
were to get good with their money, Oregon, you know, Miami,
like the schools with all the money, and it's just

(19:55):
you just consolidate all the top talent and forever. Like
college basketball was like that for a long time because
why they were paying guys under the table and they
were like eight nine guys that really mattered in Kentucky,
Duke North Carolina kind of had the market fucking cornered.
And that's what it kind of feels like in college
football right now. And it's gonna continue to be like that. Now.
Maybe with the revenue sharing there's a little more equality

(20:17):
spread across the board in terms of finances, but even
if that's the case, nil will still exist and that'll
just be to supplement the revenue sharing. So it's like, yeah,
I'll pay you a million dollars with the revenue sharing,
and my collective will get you another million dollars, so
we'll pay you too. So it's still gonna be competitive
in Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas like they're Michigan. They're

(20:40):
gonna be dead set on getting the best guys like
they always have my entire life. And I think we saw,
I mean the amount of guys from the best schools
to night it was crazy, I mean awesome. For Boise State.
I mean I would imagine that's the highest guy they've
ever had drafted. Especially as a running back. It's gotta
be cool. And he's right down the street from them.

(21:00):
Maybe not the street, but it's a it's not that
far of a plane flight. And I don't know what
the drive is, but it's definitely drivable Vegas to to
Boise State. So uh, we will be back uh tomorrow.
I think I'm gonna do like a live thing on
YouTube before the second round starts. I think three Pacific
Standard time, and then I will have Uh, I'll do

(21:22):
a podcast for Saturday, basically just a reaction to the
second in the third round, Uh, and I'll do two
for YouTube, We'll do a couple. We'll just split those
up into videos. And I would imagine tomorrow, Uh, we
get some players traded. I mean, we know guys that
are on the block like Mark Andrews, Dallas Goddard, you

(21:42):
know cousins. Could he could he be dealt? Uh? You
know Jalen Ramsey, Tyreek Hill. So and I'm sure there
are countless other names of veteran guys that are in
the NFL that could be dealt. So we will have
you cover tomorrow and Uh, what a night, What a night.
So we will talk soon and get some rest and
see us soon. The volume yeah,
