Speaker 2 (00:23):
This week on The Big League Podcast, Warriors Fullback taine two,
Opeaky reveals why he feels responsible for that final try
and the loss to the Dolphins, gives insights into the
team's turbulent team naming process, and discusses his ever growing
relationship with Charles Nickel, Crook Star Michael Burgess, and I
will assess the damage of a fourth loss in six
(00:44):
games and with the Bulldogs looming on Saturday. Are the
Warriors still a top four side?
Speaker 3 (00:50):
My name is Nathan Limb. Let's go LB.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
The Warriors are in a hole. They are beginning to
truly feel the weight of an ever growing injury toll,
and they are struggling to foot it with the other
top eight sides. The Warriors had eight frontline players unavailable
for that heartbreaking loss to the Dolphins at Mount Smart.
That's seven hundred and fifty games worth of NRL experience.
(01:16):
And that's not an excuse, that's just a fact. I'm
not even mad about their seventh loss of the season. Frustrated, sure,
but given the circumstances they played well. Roger tu Ivasishek
and Aaron Clark again stood out, taining to Opeaky and
charlesk a Cookstar had solid outings after discovering their place
in the side late in the week. Dalan Wa Tenez
(01:38):
a Lesniak, who's been under huge pressure, was better, scoring
two tries. But with the Panthers, Broncos and Sharks all
breathing down the neck of the Warriors' top four spot
and the Bulldogs are waiting on Saturday, we need to
adjust our expectations and accept that this is no longer
a top four side. Michael Burgess, Senior New Zealand Herald Rider.
(02:02):
Do I need to give myself an uppercut or do
you feel as deflated as me?
Speaker 4 (02:07):
I'd like to see you give yourself an uppercut that
we're amusing, But look, I'm still stunning.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
To be honest, I'm still stunned.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
I tried to get away from then all over the weekend,
didn't watch hardly any of it after Friday night. I'll
never forget the silence across go Media Stadium after that
try happened.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
It was just something that no one expected.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
I've seen some heartbreaking finishes of my time covering the
Warriors Nath over fifteen years or whatever it is, but
that'd be up there with one of the cruelest ones
because as you say, they played well, they played quite
well in the first half. They've had really well in
the second half, and you were thinking, this is going
to be when those great Warriors wins against the odds,
they've been given no chance, they get all these players out,
this is going to be amazing, and then it wasn't.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
So it's mixed feelings, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
Because you can't be too hard on the Warriors in
terms of they played well and there's a lot to like.
But this is a massive turning point. Is you remember
being in Paris and you saw that big roundabout in Paris.
You know, I know in Paris most of the time
you were chasing girls and getting drunk. But you see that,
you see that, Hey, look anyway, you see that massive roundabout.
(03:19):
That is how big this turning point is because because
you get that when it's it's abstoutly huge momentum for
everything else. Now they've got to somehow mentally and emotionally
recover from this. I mean, I said the same thing
with my story that they're in a hole, and I
think you're right. I don't think they're They're not playing
(03:40):
like the top four team, and it's hard to see
how they will stay in the top four. Now that
that's the bit of reality. After what was it six
seven weeks ago, they were eight points clear of the
fifth place team, and now everything's changed.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
Okay, First of all, I was in Paris for the
culture and the art.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
I don't I don't mingle with that other stuff. Right.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Yeah, we were going into the last few rounds of
this season going, oh, they've only got to play three
top eights and the last and now you and now
you're saying, well, actually looking at the last few games
of the season, that there's no way they make the
top four.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
Well, that's right, because they're not a top four team anymore.
They're not playing like a top four team, and they
don't have the personnel they had when we were we
were having all those discussions and everything was rainbows and
milk and honey.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
You know, it's like.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
They've lost their their ford leader, they've lost their back leader,
Barnett Metcalf. But then you add an Fisher, Harris or
other captain who I'm here and could be out for
longer than we expected. You know, it's going to be
more than a couple of weeks. So that four weeks
is what Webster said. Yeah, yeah, but it could be
more than that, So that that's a big issue. You've
got injuries all over the place, and then you've got
(04:51):
the confidence in the mojo and all these other teams
are coming right, Like, we've got to play the Eels
in a few weeks. The Eels are coming right manly.
In the last game of the season for Daily Sherivan's
final game for the Seagulls, that's not going to be fun.
The Titans away, the Titans.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
The Dragons are coming here, they'll be good. And then
the Bulldogs.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
I was hoping you might be able to ambush the Bulldogs,
but coming off a loss and a big loss to
the Tigers, so things are stacking up.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
But the one thing that gives me hope is the
way they played.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
I really liked the way they played for big periods
of Friday's game, So that does give you some hope.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Yeah, well, you mentioned that those big periods. Warriors coach
Andrew Webster felt that his team were the better second
half side until the final moments probably.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Said major to that second half.
Speaker 5 (05:41):
We played with such spirit and we really started to
put them under pressure.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
With our defense.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
But yeah, it's pretty simple that we gave ourselves a
good opportunity in the game and we didn't find a
way then.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
And don't worry, we're going to go through that final
play and the entire game. Everything you need to know.
We're going to hear from Warriors full bank tain to
Opeak next. But first, here are the highlights Dolphins twenty,
Warriors eighteen, and we're underway.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Marshall King urging direction table, I feo.
Speaker 6 (06:10):
Here's Potlers, here's Adja Hey Scorts gives it to Boyd.
Here's a child for the Warriors too all took him.
Here's not Teddy Chelassie ac scars at the time, I
really got through Warriors under real pressure. Hair Marshall came

(06:32):
Still there don't cuts a score.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Chayley dots down, Oh Keley is the working really hearts
on and.
Speaker 6 (06:39):
This time he gets a dry heally Boyd again, here's
Martin help the beck of corteents again what Teddy's a
lathe Yes, boy kicks.
Speaker 7 (06:52):
The crossfield tressure.
Speaker 6 (06:54):
Hair borious heaven hey scars?
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Yes?
Speaker 6 (06:58):
Had I say?
Speaker 3 (06:59):
Was it a double over?
Speaker 8 (07:01):
No?
Speaker 6 (07:02):
Dolphins throwing everything at them?
Speaker 7 (07:05):
Don a you Avarilla being guy, He's got nowhere to go,
changing direction, keeping us alive the Dolphins. Good numbers in
space out here cart now they go wine charts here
for the Dolphins, for.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
The Tars, Are you serious?
Speaker 7 (07:27):
Twenty points to way too the full time score The Dolphins.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
Steal the wind? Are you serious? What are you?
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Gontesy of sky Sport The Big League Podcast, Worris fullback
Taine two opeak. He was kind enough to have a
quick chat to Michael Burgess in the tunnel after the
full time whistle at Mount Smart.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Let's take a listen, Taine. First of all, there must
be it must be pretty tough to take.
Speaker 9 (07:54):
Yeah, that was very anytime you lose on the hood
to pretty much suck say so, yeah, but god, it
felt like it was right there for us, But obviously
it wasn't very.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Words for it.
Speaker 9 (08:05):
Disappointed, but pretty keen and got with this week because
a group going a couple of days earlier and we're
taking a whole squat, so it should be good for
us a little bit of connection.
Speaker 4 (08:15):
PC, because you did so a well to fight back
from sixteen six and it felt like you had a
lot of momentum in the second half.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
How did it feel out there? Yep, Oh, they came
to play, they were mean, they bashed us.
Speaker 9 (08:29):
We bashed them back, I thought, And I thought that's
what got us back in the game, got back to
what we were good at, which was arm wrestled. Just
a little concentration laps. I think we might have rived
a little bit too hard sometimes and they were a
good side. Like to get beaten on the hurdle like
it sucks, but credit to them. They won that moment
and we lost it and just having to be the
(08:51):
game with it.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
How did you turn things around midway through the first half?
Sixteen six down must have been a bit of a shock,
but the team came back into it.
Speaker 9 (09:01):
Well, we're confident knowing that if we can get our
game on, we'll be able to fight back, like we
play the long game, and like I was pretty confident
in us to sort of overcome them in the second half.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
But yeah, that's all I really got through it.
Speaker 9 (09:14):
I was just confident now, like we always plan to
go hard on the second enough, like set up the
first half to go hard on the second enough, and
I thought we did do that, but they've done it
as well.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
What was your view of the final player or I
guess the final set from them.
Speaker 9 (09:28):
Just moments by like I should have been there fear
springing me. I should have been there in the corner
all good fullbacks are, and I thought that was definitely
my moments.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
I thought, I live boys.
Speaker 7 (09:40):
Done with that.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
Aside from that, which is you so tough to take
for everyone, you must have felt good about your return
to fullback, about your performance.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Yep, I was confident.
Speaker 9 (09:52):
We had a lot of boys play different positions, debut time,
young boys, a lot of different puzzles, but I was
confident in the boys. We all know who even puts
a jersey on in whatever position.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
It's the same mentality. Next man, when did you find
out that you would be at fullback for this game?
Speaker 9 (10:10):
I'm not sure exactly. Was maybe towards the end of
the week, but obviously were we had the boys going
down and we don't know what was happening. We went
to seam and maybe just said, everyone be ready and as.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Well, how have you been coping this season coming into
first grade then then dropping back?
Speaker 3 (10:25):
You know, how have you been finding that that situation?
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Yeah good.
Speaker 9 (10:29):
I love playing first grade and I want to be
in it as much as I can.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
We just got it.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
I really wanted to get the.
Speaker 9 (10:34):
Wind for the boys today and because I'm playing first
grade is mean, but not of you.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
I'm not gonna get the wind for the boys.
Speaker 9 (10:42):
But right, yeah, I love it and I just hope
to teach pits anymore.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
You're looking, though, really comfortable, really at home at full
back in first grade.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Now it is that how you're feeling?
Speaker 9 (10:55):
Yes, I like I wouldn't say I'm at home, like
it's mine and Knut's position. We share it. And like
today I thought Nuck played mean in the senses, and
he's really good for me. Chances they're sorry Y's snuck.
He's really good for me, Like he still helps me
out throughout the week, tell me what I need to know.
He tell me what I need to get good at,
(11:16):
and he makes it easy for me. Bro like me
and IM have that good relationship like that. I think
anyone that placeful but would feel at home.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
It's quite an amazing relationship be to a god, doesn't it. Yeah,
it's genuine, Bro, He's a genuine guy.
Speaker 9 (11:28):
I don't think anyone in this club would have badly soon.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
And how are things going off the field for you,
you know, away from footy, Like, how do you sort
of get away from footy?
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Take your mind off things? Just family, Bro, spend.
Speaker 9 (11:42):
Time with my partner, my wife and my baby other
baby on the way, and especially my grandparents, aunties and
uncle as much as I can, Bro.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Just it's all family or feel good luck going on. Yeah,
but I enjoy it, Bro. I it's my life and
I wouldn't change it. Thank you so much for talking
to us, especially in the circumstances.
Speaker 8 (12:02):
This is yeah, the Big League podcast on the Worries
band Wagons since day one, and.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
This is the Big League podcast, Bry.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
Listening to that interview, Burge, I really feel for Taine.
He clearly blames himself for that last try and therefore
the result. But I thought that aside from that, he
played really well and there was a moment, you know
in that second half where he made a try saving
tackle was a guaranteed try and in the bottom right
hand corner from a Warrior's perspective, right before the line
(12:35):
saved a sure fire try. I thought he was really
good from full back, as he has been all year.
Just that mistackle at the very end he.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
Was he was really hurting you to feel from The
last thing you probably want to do was talking to
a reporter after that game. But he's a good guy, Tan,
so he agreed to have a chat. You could sort
of see the frustration, the despondency on his face with
the way that last sequence had played.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Out and he got caught in the wrong position. But
you're right.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
Apart from that, he had a really good game. The
tackle to save a try, but also I feel like
the way he injected himself into the line that was
key on a couple of the Warriors tries. I think
both the tries to Dallen, he just comes to the
line at the right time, holds himself back, then the
pace and then there's a gap on the outside. So
(13:21):
I really like him at fullback, I have to say,
especially with the way the team is now. I'm not
saying anything gets chance is great too, but for what
they need now, he's really good there.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Right, let's go through this game in a little bit
more detail. First of all, Warriors coach Andrew Webster, he
admitted after the game that they had their chances to
seal the match.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
The game is in our hands. Are then we turn
the ball over in two really good spots laid we
let him out. So that's the frustrating bit.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Now that last Playburge I did feel for the Warriors
because Liqua Hallasima had gone down with what looked to
be a hamstring injury. I wasn't quite sure. Maybe you
can provide a little bit more detail on that, but
he was on the ground, so there were a man short.
The Dolphins were just throwing the ball left and right
looking for an opening, and yes, they made it out
to that sort of right edge to the Warriors left
(14:06):
edge defense and tame to a picky comes across and
he misses the tackle and tackle and Jermaine is Sakor
goes over. Could they have done better in that playman?
Obviously they could have made the tackle. But will they
be kicking themselves there?
Speaker 3 (14:19):
They will?
Speaker 4 (14:20):
They will, they really will. The review will not be
good to watch. On the fifth tackle, Capell made a
great tackle. I think it was on the full back
on the on the right hand corner slammed them down.
You're like, right, they've only got one more tackle to
hold out here. They're playing against twelve and men as well.
Remember Lekas on the ground as you say that, to
play around him. I think it was cramp, which is good.
(14:41):
It's only cramp. I saw him after the match. He's
walking fine. So but they were a bit passive. As
Webster said in the presser, he didn't really like the
body language. They were standing back, okay, because you don't
want to shoot out of the line, because you should
out of the line then there's a gap.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
I get that.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
But the other thing is you've got to all move
up as a line and pressure the dolphins. But instead
they stood back. So the Dolphins went from the right
hand side of the field where Capele made the tackle,
all the way across to the left. And you heard
in the commentary, I think Bev and Jewis said in
the commentary something like so and so he's got nowhere
to go here, and they just had to push up
and close on him, but they sort of held held.
(15:17):
Then the Dolphins go back the other way and suddenly
they've got a two man overlap. So The other thing
that went wrong is they got their numbers all wrong.
They all came across to the right and they were
left with man short on the left. So in the
circumstances to concede a try like that with the guy
scoring in the corner with acres of space for me,
it should not happen. And I think that'll become obvious
(15:40):
when they did their review on what they'll be doing
it this Monday morning. Actually, well, you mentioned when they
went over to their left hand side from a Dolphins perspective,
they had that player of the ball nowhere to go.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
He was standing there.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
He wasn't even moving, he was just standing there. He
had two seconds where he did not move and just
waited for his teammates on his right hand side to
get into the position. And the Warriors defense, as you said,
they didn't come up. Someone should have come up, I
mean come up as a line as you were talking about.
But aside from that finish, throughout game, the second half
was a lot better than the first half. I don't
(16:12):
think they played that badly, and going into those final minutes,
I felt that the Warriors had it under control. It
was never a sure thing, but it felt like they
were going to pull off one of those wins. As
you mentioned before, Herbie Fineworth was outstanding in that first half.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
Obviously got himself aroset of eighteen minutes.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
I think, yeah, yeah, Well, he got himself across the line, obviously,
and he made a break from within the dolphins own half,
made it all the way up the field and then
just did his hammy. It was like he'd been shot
at the Elsnope, and he fell to the ground and
that was that. And I think the Warriors were actually
really lucky because he was tearing up that edge.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
He was doing so so well.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
He was the Dolphins' best player up until that point,
and they really benefited from not having to contain him
on that edge. I mean, how big of a turning
point was that, because for me, that led the Warriors
back into the game.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
It was a big part.
Speaker 4 (17:03):
There was a big bonus and another reason why there's
this residual frustration about this result because he was looking hot.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
He was he was looking dangerous every time he got
the ball.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
When we say the Warriors played well, we do have
to have a caveat that. They did concede some soft
tries like they won't. If they look back at the
tries the Dolphins scored in the first half, they won't
like much about them. The way they conceded those tries
as well, and that that's another factor because you concede
soft tries and the score board looks a certain way.
(17:33):
Then they save some amazing tries in the second half.
As as we're talking about, Dallan saved to try with
an intercept the meter out from his line. Tane saved
to try. Cody bounces the ball, Cape we had an
intercept as well, capele An intercept. It was actually a
crazy game, It's sort of It was amazingly entertaining game,
thrilling to watch. It had everything, just not the final
(17:53):
final flourish. Let's talk about the halves Tannaboid and Tomighty
Martin together. Obviously, Chanell Harris Tavita ruled out for one week,
so he should be back this week in theory with
a calf injuryto Martin. I thought both of them played well,
but there was just no X factor for me. They're
quite similar halves in the way that they've got a
(18:14):
very good kicking game. They're both distributors, but neither of
them are running halves. They were forcing repeat sets. They
were giving the Warriors in good territory, keeping their hands
on the ball, but they're quite saming. It sort of
felt like that sort of try scoring killer instinct that
someone like Luke metcalf Brings was missing.
Speaker 3 (18:34):
And I'm not suggesting.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
That they should have selected someone else, because there is
no one else, but it felt like that was missing
from the Warrior's attack.
Speaker 4 (18:42):
Demada did well. He actually ran a lot. He was
trying to run, he was trying to take on the line,
he was testing out defenders.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
That was good.
Speaker 4 (18:50):
Tanner Boyd went okay, kicked well and they didn't make
space for some good tries, but they still need more.
I mean Tanner, at least this week he was digging
into the line. That was our complaint. Last week he
was running to the line, committing defenders. So that's good.
But when you look at the last ten minutes, you
look at the game management, you always look at the halves.
(19:13):
A couple of moments in the last five or six
minutes where they died with the ball on the fifth tackle,
which is fine because the theory is die with the
ball five to ten meters out. You don't run the
rescue repeats of a seven tackle set. But sometimes your
two points up, you've got to go for it. You've
got to kill the game, grub her into the end goal,
go for a try, and then we're not We're having
(19:34):
a different discussion this morning. So there's still a few
questions over tannerboard. He still needs to find his best
in this number seven. Jersey Webs is not going to
change his mind. They will stick with him. I'm sure
that he's only had what's he had four games, but
from the high of the Tigers match, he still needs
to get back to that. Tomati though, I thought, well,
(19:54):
it'd be interesting call what they do with herm or
Chanelle for Saturday.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
Roger ti Vasishchek was again I thought one of the
standout players. A couple more eye catching runs. He had
over three hundred running meters. Aaron Clark again was He's
just a solid eight out of ten every week. He's
a sort of Simon Mannering consistent performer that just every
week will be there and make a few runs. That
gets the Warriors on the front foot in terms of
(20:21):
when they needing yardage and they deepen their own half.
Aaron Clarkson man you give the ball to and he
makes meters. Another player Eddie, I Amir Toyaba. I thought
he had a solid debut, couple of good runs post
contact meters. What did you make of him then? And
is there anyone else that stood out to you?
Speaker 4 (20:38):
He was good, the kid on debut, did well in
the pressure game. Good signs for the future. Jacob Laban
I thought was really good when he came on, smashing
impact literally just coming on and post content metas straight away,
which is.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
Why I was a bit mystified why he was brought
on so late.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
He was brought on with about twenty minutes to go,
maybe from memory, that felt a bit strange leaving him
on the bench when you've got to deplete the team already.
So that compared to having someone like Tennis Ellis Smith
having quite a bit of minute, or even Eddie had
had a few more. So I would have like to
see Jacob come on earlier. But can only echo what
(21:15):
you're saying about Aaron. He's been amazing and Roger he's
really found himself on the wing. He has said to
me last week he said something like what you say,
you're feeling really comfortable. He's worked out today's NRL, but
far out. If they all had the application and desire
of Roger, they'd been a very good place to Worrows.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
You know.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
Yeah, and we had two of us a check on
the podcast last week, so if you would like to
hear that interview, you can go back and listen to that.
And speaking of Jacob, Laban unfortunately suffered a knee injury
from opposite Felice Calfussi, who was sinbind for the incident.
Webster's offered this update on Laban post match. Yeah, felt
something pop in his way. I don't know what that means.
(21:58):
Another injury? Are you taking the mac? Are you taking
the mac? Jacob Black?
Speaker 3 (22:04):
Quite?
Speaker 7 (22:04):
Wow?
Speaker 3 (22:05):
What well?
Speaker 4 (22:06):
This one was preventable. I hate this kind of injury
because this was a this is a f How was
it preventable? Calfusie just goes in at his knees when
he's already held that.
Speaker 3 (22:16):
What I mean prevented? I mean he needs eight weeks
out of the NRL for that.
Speaker 4 (22:22):
Yeah, Nathan needs to have a glass of water, but
or something stronger, but exactly is what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
Though.
Speaker 4 (22:28):
I hate those kind of tackles, I really do, because
CALFUSI gets three weeks, but how many weeks will Laban get?
Who knows. Let's hope it's not too serious. The last
I sort of Laban he was. I was just about
to speak to Taine and he was coming past me
on crutches and pointing down at the ground and asking
his girlfriend, can you grab that for me? And I
was like, Jesus, I hope he's okay, because he's a
(22:49):
big loss and it's just such a cynical, horrible tackle.
I don't know the answer getting them out of the game.
Getting those kind of tackles out of the game but
far out pisses me off. Should they have kicked for
goal after that penalty up by two a few minutes
to go? I was quite comfortable with their decision to
continue pressing for a try because they kicked the two points.
(23:10):
If the Dolphins scored their level anyway, what was your
take on I'm sure a few people commenting on social
media they should have been going for a penalty. Chew
up a bit of time.
Speaker 7 (23:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (23:19):
I asked Angel Ribs about this in the press conference,
and I didn't want to be a smart ass or
because in hindsight, you look at it and you think, gee,
they had that extra two points, then it goes to
golden point. A sarka mistic conversion that it could be different.
I did wonder just because you kick, the goal goes there,
you get the ball back. Webster made the point, which
is fair enough that these days teams are good at
(23:39):
the restarts from kickoff. If the Dolphins get the ball
back and then they're on attack, you never forgive yourself.
His point was, no, you stay down there, keep them
on the line, Just keep them there for the last
six minutes.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
Just pin them in there. So it's probably fair enough.
I always like to.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
Take the points next to the post, but on this
occasion I was like you, I wasn't completely like I.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Thought they would take the points, but when they did,
and I was like, oh okay, it was more.
Speaker 4 (24:05):
I was more disappointed with the way they couldn't create
much in those sets on the line. They couldn't create
much in terms of a triscreen opportunity or forcing a
repeat set. That was probably more of a disappointment for me.
Speaker 3 (24:17):
Big League Podcast right.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
The Warriors faced the Bulldogs in Sydney on Saturday, and
they are under massive pressure now. The Bulldogs sit third
on the ladder and are one of the surprise form
teams of the competition this year. I think it's fair
to say they've got fourteen wins and five losses.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
Now I say that.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
They're coming off a shock twenty eight to fourteen loss
to the Tigers, which actually flatters the Bulldogs because they
scored a dry Josh Curran and his hundred right at
the end of the game, and that was at Kombank Stadium.
Why were they playing at Combak Stadium.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
I don't know. They are led by.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
Three time Premiership winner Stephen Crichton at center, but worth
noting he is currently on report for a high shot
on tailor mate in that game. Benji Marshall was livid
afterwards that Crichton wasn't sent off and they Tigers had
a player sent off earlier in the game for the
same thing they had at Burton and Lachland Galvin in
the halves plus William Kickout in the second row. They
(25:14):
are missing former Warrior Marcelo Montour and Connor Tracy though
in the NRL Casualty ward. At the moment, Burge, how
do you feel about this game? Because I don't have
a lot of confidence.
Speaker 4 (25:29):
I would have been feeling better if the Bulldogs weren't
coming off a loss, and not just a loss, but
a loss that really hurts, like they really wanted to
beat the Tigers. There was all that drama about the
lucky Galvin stuff. So you never want to play a
team who have just lost, especially in those circumstances, because
they are doubly motivated to win. Before that, I was
feeling alright. I was thinking, you know, remember that Penrith
(25:51):
game last year. Remember that Penwrith game Magic Round. We
gave the Warriors no chance, they had all these players missing,
and they went and beat the Panthers.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
I thought maybe we could see that. But it will
be hard.
Speaker 4 (26:02):
The Bulldogs are one of the toughest teams to play
in the NROL. There won't be a massive contingent of Warriors.
I don't think there is another Sydney games. It's sort
of a bit further out of town. So mate, it's
going to be It's going to be tough, but they
just got.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
To they'll believe. They'll believe they can do it. It's
whether we believe they can do it.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
I don't know what are the main threats that the
Bulldogs pose because, as we said, they've really come and
to form this year and they were the top of
the table for a number of weeks. Pretty much the
whole first half of the season, they were top of
the ladder. So what are the main threats that they posed?
What is this makeshift Warriors side going to have to
be very wary of coming up against a Bulldog side
(26:42):
which has plenty of confidence and as you said, we'll
be hurting after that.
Speaker 4 (26:46):
Well, they've been great this year. I mean, I mean defensively,
they're really strong, really good light speed. But the thing
that stood out for me about them is what they
do with their forwards. Not the biggest pack of forwards,
but so mobile and so clever with all that passing
in close to the ruck just on the edge. So
they're really effective pack of forwards on attack and then
(27:08):
everything flows from there with the backs from there.
Speaker 3 (27:11):
So they're a good team.
Speaker 4 (27:13):
I don't think they're as good as as the Storm
or the Raiders, but they're a very good team. The
Warriors will be looking forward to playing the Bulldogs though,
because there's a bit of bad blood from last year's
game in Sydney when Tamata got taken out with about
five minutes to go, and then they lost in Golden Point.
That was a truly horrible, horrible loss. I think I was,
in fact, I was there for that one. But the
(27:34):
one good thing about this mate, is that there's a foundation,
and that foundation is what they did on Friday night.
They've got something to build on, even though they've got
all these players missing. Maybe maybe Wade Egan to be back,
maybe Chanelle. I personally, i'd give I'd give Egan another
week to completely get over the concussion and say to Healy, mate,
you played great, We're going to give you another week.
Speaker 3 (27:55):
Go for it. That's what I would do with Egan.
That's what I do as well.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
I don't think they will because Webster just sticks. Webster
sticks to the concussion protocols. And I actually raised this
with him earlier in the season when Egan had a
KNOCKOS had given his history of head knocks. Do you
just give him an extra week to recover? Just give
him the track record and the dangers that that poses
to him as a person, not only as a player.
And we've just said he's passed the concussion protocols, he's
(28:20):
gone through what they've deemed is necessary to recover from
a head knock, so he will play, and because that
sort of period will be up, I expect Egan to
be named in the side. Do we expect the same
in terms of we had that late reshuffle, So Chance
will be at center, Taine to Opeaky will be.
Speaker 3 (28:38):
At the back.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
You'd imagine Chanelle Harris Tavita comes into five, eight to
mighty back to that interchange role. What about Vymonga.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
Oh, he's not good.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
He won't be I'm not sure how long, how long
he's out for, but he won't be back, not not,
just not this soon. Tomati is an interesting one. He played,
played well, and it depends on Shanelle's calf muscle. If
it's not completely right, maybe Chanelle has another week on
the sidelines. But the core structure of the team will
be the same, and it has to be because there's
(29:06):
no one else there actually is. The shorter centers, the
shorter wingers, the shorter forwards. They're short. They're short everywhere.
I mean, bring it back to what you said at
the start. Eight front line players missing the spine on
Friday night was the reserve grade spine for the first
five or six matches of this year, so Appial Appeal Battle,
(29:29):
The Big.
Speaker 8 (29:30):
League Podcast for the biggest league fans, The Big League
Podcast on the Warriors Wagons since day one.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
Just quickly, Bursts touched on the Warriors women, who had a.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
Twelve six win over the Cowboys, the second of the
nrl W The Cowboys fourth on the ladder with three wins.
They're no mugs and Ivani on debut with a try
and some massive hits and defense, Burge, what did you
make of her and the Warriors performance?
Speaker 3 (30:02):
That was great.
Speaker 4 (30:03):
I mean to win across the Tasman the first time
this season in terrible conditions and the first woman's Magic Round,
which would have been a different thing to deal with
the other teams there. This team's on a learning curve,
but they're learning fast. They bounce back from that pretty
bad performance against the Titans, so it's good science.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
Patricia Maley Ipple is going to be a Warrior is great.
That's what I'm saying right now. People are going to
her playing for the Black Ferns and winning a Super
Rugby title. It's going to be a footnote in the
rugby league career of Patricia Malay Apple. She got a
forty thirty in that game as well. Her kicking game
is amazing.
Speaker 4 (30:36):
And I don't know if I was having this conversation
with you on the podcast or with someone else in
the press box at the.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
Warriors watching the Warriors woman, but I remember.
Speaker 4 (30:44):
Saying that after the say I think during the second
game of the season that wow, this player she's quite special.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
And we've since talked about her.
Speaker 4 (30:53):
She's the kind of player that the Australian media, Australian
commentators in about four or five weeks are going to
be going g go over because just a skill set
and once she learns the game far out, I mean,
to your point, she's going to be good.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
Right quick. Five predictions Burge.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
As we get into crunch time in terms of the
nrral regular season, we're going to start off with what
is going to be a pretty big game Storm Broncos
in Melbourne.
Speaker 3 (31:21):
How are we feeling?
Speaker 4 (31:23):
This is massive for the Storm, for the Broncos and
for the Warriors, because the Broncos of course are on
the tails.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
Of the Warriors. Go the Storm, Go Storm here, We're
cheering for the Storm. The Storm.
Speaker 4 (31:37):
They did well, they had their first win without Jeromees
Hughes and it'll probably continue, although the Broncos are amazing
against against the Rabbits. But yeah, I tend to back
the Storm in Melbourne. I'm not going to deviate here. Well,
I want the Storm to win, don't get me wrong.
But the Broncos, as we said last week and we
said previous weeks, they've turned a corner. They put sixty
on the Bunnies sixty. I think they've got so much
(32:00):
confidence at the moment. And don't get me wrong, the
Storm will be monumental at home, as they always are.
But I have an inkling that the Broncos are gains
to upset them nights versus the Panthers. Did you see
the Panthers went over the Titans bird for twenty four
mil a halftime. The Titans come back and take the
lead twenty six to twenty four. Unheard of Nathan Cleary
(32:20):
slots of forty meter drop goal and to tie it up,
send the match to golden point, and then the Panthers
score try and win it. It was one of the
great NRL finishers again, just like Friday night, just like
so many I felt for the Titans are quite unlucky.
But it didn't make me feel better that Okay, the
Titans are a good team. They played amazing against the
(32:41):
Warriors and they played that turn this season around and
so good against Bendis it makes you feel a bit better,
makes you feel scared about going to play the Titans
in two weeks.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
But yeah, amazing, incredible game. And the Panthers they're back.
Speaker 4 (32:54):
We said they're back after they beat the Warriors, and
they're definitely back now, so they'll win this one.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
Raiders Seagulls only mainly got humped by the Roosters.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
Yeah, I told you a few weeks ago. I don't
know he saw the.
Speaker 4 (33:07):
Raiders lost as well to the Dragons eighteen twelve. They did,
and that's another reason to be worried. Because the Warriors
play the Dragons the week go after this week, so
it's all adding up.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
Yeah, the Raiders will bounce back. The Raiders. You should
be fine. Dragons Sharks.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
This is the classic local Derby and Sydney sort of
the Southern Sydney Shire. These two teams hate each other.
I actually like the Dragons in this one. It'll be close,
much closer than people think. So I'm going for the
Dragons to to do the Warriors a favor. Because the
Dragons are the team that they're run home just quickly.
(33:43):
They're run home as they're on twenty eight points, two
points off the Warriors. They're run home as Dragons Titans
by Knights, Bulldogs, so not too bad. They're the ones
I fear in terms of overtaking the Warriors. So yeah,
Dragons to do the Warriors of favor.
Speaker 3 (33:58):
I'm going to beg the Sharks here.
Speaker 2 (33:59):
Put thirty two points on the Cowboys, but go the Dragons, Dolphins, Roosters.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
Dolphins. Dolphins are really good and they'll be on such
a high. The way they won that game.
Speaker 4 (34:11):
Good signs for Dolphins and honestly, they're a team I
would love to see make the top eight. I've just
got a soft spot for that team. I think it's
because there's so many Kiwis in the team. So your
Dolphins to prevail over the Roosters, especially with it being
in Queensland. All right, here we go Bulldogs versus the
Warriors in Sydney. Burge your prediction, Yes, are we going
(34:36):
to see a miracle? Is that what we're calling it?
If the Warriors when it's a miracle, well it wouldn't
be a miracle, but it would be against considerable odds.
You'd be thinking there'll be three dollars, three dollars fifty outsiders.
It's a lot to ask. It really depends how they've
recovered physically, mentally, emotionally from Friday night. And I've got
a bit of a turnaround, so that's good. But I
(34:58):
just know that Bulldog's crowd that's worth six points as
it is, the Bulldog's going to want to bunch bounce back.
I think it'd be a bridge too far. I can
see the Bulldogs winning this one close, but the Bulldogs
will be too good.
Speaker 3 (35:13):
I really hate this, really hate it, Burge, but.
Speaker 2 (35:17):
We're honest on this podcast, and I don't see the
Warriors beating the Bulldogs. Please prove me wrong, make me
eat these words for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But I
am backing the Bulldogs to win that one. And the
Warriors have a wee bit of work to do to
finish in the top four. Titans Bunnies who cares, well,
(35:42):
just skip it.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
No, we do care.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
But I wonder if the Rabbit is going to win
another game this season. That's the sad, sad part of
what's going on. Wayne Bennett incredible career. Rabbit is a
proud club, but just everything unraveled with injuries compounded on
losses and more losses. So yeah, the Titans definitely for
(36:04):
mine here and another one that we I couldn't care
less about Eels. Visit the Cowboys Eels Eels. I love
to back Paramatta you know, excuse me, And they're coming
right which is also quite scary because they're coming to
play the Warriors in a few weeks. But the Eels
Eels to beat the Cowboys, I'll.
Speaker 3 (36:24):
Back you there. Please follow and rate the podcast. That'll
do us for this week.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
Another loss for the Warriors, but they do have the Bulldogs,
I say, but they do have the Bulldogs on Saturday.
We look forward to that contest. We will be back
next Monday to go through all of the action. Thank you,
Michael Burgess for your time, your wisdom, your insight. My
name is Nathan Limb. Hey you have a fantastic week,
all right.
