This week on The Big League Podcast, Newstalk ZB’s Nick Bewley and the NZ Herald’s Michael Burgess dissect another gritty Warriors performance, as they grind out a hard‑earned win over the Gold Coast Titans.

We head straight into the changing sheds after full-time to hear from try‑scorer Alofiana Khan‑Pereira and tireless forward Jackson Ford, breaking down the emotion of the win, the physical toll of the contest, and the growing belief inside this Warriors squad.

With momentum building, attention quickly turns to what’s next — a massive ANZAC Day showdown in Wellington against the Dolphins, and another opportunity for the Warriors to make a statement.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks be follow
this and our Wide Ranger podcast now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
This week on The Big League Podcast, Alfiana carn Pereira
and Jackson Ford on the pod. After the Warriors handled
business at home against the Gold Coast, we unpack that
twenty eight to twenty triumph debate, some more juicy selection headaches,
and a trip to Wellington for the Warriors to take
on the Dolphins on Anzac Day. My name is Nick Buley.

(00:39):
Let's go be healthy. Well If the win over Melbourne
was built out of desperation and desire, this one was
headlined by razor sharp execution. Training ground tries is how
Shawn Johnson described it in commentary. The crispness of passes,
players in motion, very slick to put away Alfiana carn

(01:00):
Pereira for a double in the left corner and Dallan
Martene's alesniak for one in the right corner. These tries
weren't born out of terrible Titans defensive reads. And yes
there will be some scrutiny over conceding those late tries,
but the clinical nature of that first forty shows to
me anyway, it has me excited if it is one thing,

(01:22):
but to be a genuine force in the NRL, you've
got to ice your attacking plays. Michael Burgers, senior sports
writer at the New Zealand Herald. You were there at
go Media Mount Smart Stadium. What stood out to you?

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Well, I thought I thought the first half was exceptional
for for some of the reasons you've outlined. I think
the the energy from the first few minutes, the sort
of attacking verve they showed, the threats. You know, Ali
Lauataoa makes that break in the third or fourth minute,
the whole crowd comes alive, They're on their feet, and
I thought, that's set the time for the night. You know,

(01:55):
They've got everyone excited, got the team excited, got the
fans excited, break into open territory, and then from there
it was just yeah, they were they were. They were
sharp and slick.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
You know.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
It wasn't just the amount of sets they completed, because
that can be deceiving, but they didn't even look like
making it fumble. They knew what they were doing, The
moves were running well. And the other thing was the
Goldkost actually defended really well. They conceded four tries and
they defended really well. They stopped Liquahellisima on the right
edge about three times when he was sort of in

(02:26):
really good spots. So there was just so much to
like about that first half, mainly because they had to
they had to send a message that they hadn't got
carried away by Melbourne. They were actually just it was
just it was business time and it was business time.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Well let's take a look. Listen, Ra they're to the
highlights courtesy of our friends over at Skysport. Warriors twenty
eight Titans twenty.

Speaker 5 (02:52):

Speaker 6 (03:11):
They got the pass on cut again? Has time pa?

Speaker 2 (03:14):

Speaker 7 (03:17):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (03:18):
Happy?

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Is he?

Speaker 6 (03:19):
Warriors again? Egan Boyd?

Speaker 5 (03:22):
I'm no a better pressure minutes getting the pass away.

Speaker 6 (03:24):

Speaker 8 (03:31):
This is a trial just.

Speaker 6 (03:32):
Sold you Warriors looking for Troy number four.

Speaker 6 (04:02):
Here a buy a money for the turner scores the
last foot the tod had they change direction.

Speaker 5 (04:11):
Campbell straight up in the air, not much distance at all.
The Titans have it bus or money? Are we thoze
it out the back door? Still on hair has how
how accelerating those that dummy scores a wonderful try.

Speaker 6 (04:25):
Now it goes again to all the your tight half
time got the other day away and Lauren gets one
and the Warriors.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
Have beaten the Gold Coast Titans twenty eight points to
twenty two's The Big League Podcast podcast.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Well birdcha, we haven't had a mount smart game for
a while since that lost to the Tigers, So treat
for the listeners here on The Big League Podcast this week.
Two interviews You were there in the Shed's postmatch first
up by Lofiana carn Perreira after two tries against his
former club.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
Luffy, What did you What did you think? Of tonight.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
You're smiling. It must have been a great experience.

Speaker 9 (05:05):
Oh the best man is it's awesome to go against
your old club and you know, definitely put put it
on there, put on and score score a couple of tries.

Speaker 10 (05:12):
Very I was just amazing, just proud of the boys
as well.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
So because you're talking about your old club, but your
new club you seem to have this. You haven't been
here long, but you seem to have this genuine kind
of love for the Warriors already.

Speaker 8 (05:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (05:26):
You know, coming to a new club, none of the
boys knew who I was or no my my work ethics.
So you know, I really wanted to display that, you know,
with the opportunity that I have, and you know, I
just really wanted to earn the boys respect, and.

Speaker 6 (05:41):
You know it's for me.

Speaker 9 (05:42):
I really want to be consistent on that and you know,
put that within my my playing game and well my
playing styles.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
Sorry every week.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
So yeah, how are you feeling when we'll be told
you that you'd be starting.

Speaker 9 (05:56):
I couldn't believe it, am, I was. I was star struck.
You I still pinch myself just being at training with
some of the boys like rogen Dale.

Speaker 8 (06:04):
So it was awesome.

Speaker 9 (06:06):
And you know, full credit to to him and him
and the stuff and the boys for putting, you know,
so much time and effort into me to become the
player that I am today.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
So and your combination early days, be a combination with
Roger looked look pretty tidy tonight.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
Yeah, yeah, something.

Speaker 8 (06:23):
You know, it's such a new combo.

Speaker 9 (06:25):
We wanted to, you know, really focus on how we
both work and what works for him and what works
for me.

Speaker 10 (06:30):
So I think, you know, for me personally, you know,
you don't.

Speaker 9 (06:34):
It's not every day you get the player outside of
Roger two us check and grow for me, and that's
that's a massive honor in itself. And to be an
outside of him, I just want to do the best
I can.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
Is he a bit of a sort of a hero
of yours from back in the day or something you
looked up to?

Speaker 8 (06:47):
Yeah, of course.

Speaker 5 (06:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (06:50):
He definitely speaks for himself.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Man.

Speaker 9 (06:52):
It's he was one of the idols growing up. And
you know, like I said before, I pinch myself just
just to turn up the training and get to play
on his outside.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Just tell us about that you were sick and try
in particular pretty spectacular.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Wait, score it. I can't actually sawing through the air.

Speaker 10 (07:13):
Oh yeah, yeah, sorry, I get it mixed up.

Speaker 8 (07:17):
Man, No, that was crazy.

Speaker 9 (07:18):
Yeah, I couldn't believe it actually high I got when
I when I looked at it, look back at it,
and it was it was pretty incredible, wasn't it. So
now that's something that we pride ourselves on, is as
our finishes, and you know, working with with Dow on
that and byre out like Dow does some crazy finishes
as well, so he helps me a lot as well.

Speaker 10 (07:37):
So no, it's something we're very pride ourselves on.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
Because you were about chest tie off the ground when
you were sort of soaring through the air.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
Did you actually I think you were gonna get it down?

Speaker 6 (07:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (07:48):
Of course, I definitely back to myself. You know, that's
something we really work on. And you know, it wasn't
really big when I was showing that Titans, but you
know here it's it's fundamental details and man like yeah,
like I said, like the boys do it every week,
so I get amongst it, and you know, it definitely
pays off.

Speaker 4 (08:08):
Final one. How you or how have you settled into
life in Auckland.

Speaker 8 (08:13):
I loving it and loving everything every day.

Speaker 9 (08:16):
And you know, I'm fitting in very well, and I've
been welcomed very well by the not only the stuff,
but the players as well. So they helped me out
with so much. You know, spit a shout out to
Cliff Man. He's he's been in our Guardian Angel, to
be honest. What moving over here has helped me so much.
And yeah, and my missus to in Paris. She's only

(08:36):
me this mout easier.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
He's not a bit colder compared to the gold.

Speaker 10 (08:39):
Cost it's actually freezing out.

Speaker 9 (08:42):
I'm not used to some black sands, and I'm used
in the Golden Golden Beach's name, so it is a
bit different.

Speaker 10 (08:47):
But man, I love every part of it.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Nice work birds of Lofiana, car and Perira.

Speaker 5 (08:52):
There.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
His stat line from Saturday twelve runs one hundred and
five meters, three line breaks, five tackle busts and a
couple of tries and as you touched on near the top,
it was his sort of lateral, enterprising run that actually
sit Arli Laatawa free, that initial line break that set
the crowd of lights. I'm loving, I must have. I'm

(09:14):
having to eat my words because it was sort of
three or four weeks ago we were saying, when are
we going to see Carmpereira. Could he help add another
layer to this Warrior's side, And I was sort of saying, oh,
you know, yes, we might get the finishes, but defensively,
I'm not convinced he is bored into the culture. And
I'm glad you asked him that question too. Burde near
the top, because if you see on the socials as

(09:36):
the Warriors do, they do their team song after every win,
or two team songs these days, and he is right
in amongst it. He gave the pukana salibration after one
of his tries. He is he might become a bit
of a cult hero here at the Warriors.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
You can see it happening, can't you. You really can.
He's a guy that's come here and as he said,
as Andrew Webster said after the match, he's fitted in
straight away and that doesn't always happen, even though players
want it to happen. The club wants to happen fitted
and straight away part of the team. And the other
thing that struck me in his first gaming to Melbourne
was you know he's coming here for with a flash

(10:10):
and dash and the guy that can sprint eighty meters.
But Melbourne was a different sort of game. He didn't
get much open space. But he was tough, he was gritty,
he was the way he was hitting the ball up.
I didn't realize he quite had that in him. He
hadn't seen much of him at the Gold Coast and
I pictured sort of a different guy. So he can.
If he can bring that those tough carries plus the

(10:30):
pace that everyone's been wanting to see as part of
this Warros back line, he's going to be hard to dislodge.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
We'll get to that when we look ahead at the
preview for the round eight clash in Wellington against the Dolphins.
But speaking of tough carries, mister daly m himself. Jackson
Ford was your next interview after another herculean eighty minute
performance in the middle twenty three runs, two hundred and

(10:59):
thirty nine meters forty nine tackles. Here is Jackson Ford with.

Speaker 4 (11:04):
Burge Jackson for First of all, what did you think
of tonight?

Speaker 7 (11:08):
Yeah? I thought we started fast. It was a good
effort by the boys there. That was a tough first forty.
I felt like we got into our ground good, you know,
we're running onto the ball fast, but then we got
a little bit sloppy at the back forty and it
was good by us to hold on. But yeah, a
bit quick in the middle of there, a bit too
much rug speed, and yeah, we'll have a few lessons

(11:30):
from that back end.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
What did you like though about tonight's performance, especially image
in the first five minutes.

Speaker 7 (11:38):
Yeah, Like, as I said, I felt like that first
half was a good effort.

Speaker 8 (11:41):
You know, they definitely come to play.

Speaker 7 (11:44):
We were running hard, just on the adline, finding our spots,
kicking in the corners.

Speaker 8 (11:51):
And I feel like we were front loading and defense.

Speaker 7 (11:53):
You know, they've got some good backs there and Kinney
and the two wingers, so we had to bring our
shoulders and they feel like we did that.

Speaker 8 (12:00):
We sort of worked.

Speaker 7 (12:01):
On our game plan there and but yeah, as I say,
we we went away from that in the back end.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
What was the mindset to night Jackson after last week?
You know, that historic performance and I guess a lot
of hype after that win.

Speaker 4 (12:14):
What was sort of the thinking going into tonight?

Speaker 7 (12:18):
Yeah, as you said, it was a good win last week.
I feel like a little bit of consistency sort of thing,
like you know, what I mean, that's it's all good
to say we've had that.

Speaker 8 (12:27):
Game, but it's all about backing it up this week.

Speaker 7 (12:29):
So you know, it doesn't really mean much if you
just go out there every week and sometimes play but
sometimes play bart So sort of finding that.

Speaker 8 (12:36):
Consistency and those script performance this week in week out.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
How are you feeling this season about your game?

Speaker 8 (12:42):
Yeah, I'm pretty good. I feel like I'm just vibing
off everyone, you know what I mean.

Speaker 7 (12:46):
Everyone's doing pretty good for him, So it makes my
job a lot easier when you know you've got Barney Fish, Dimitri,
you know, even the back rollers, you know, finding speed.

Speaker 8 (12:55):
So I just just get on the back of them and.

Speaker 3 (12:58):
Ye, the is this the best you've played in your career?
You feel like you're in career beast form.

Speaker 8 (13:06):
I don't know about that.

Speaker 7 (13:06):
I feel like, you know, it's a team effort, you know.
I feel like as a team where sort of finding
our straps. I'm sort of just trying to focus on
sort of bringing my game week in week out with
that so much the neatives.

Speaker 8 (13:22):
So like sort of that consistency.

Speaker 7 (13:23):
It's what I was like I was saying before, So
if I can minimize you know the bad things.

Speaker 8 (13:29):
I'm happy.

Speaker 4 (13:30):
How are you doing this?

Speaker 3 (13:31):
Eighty minutes after eighty minutes after eighty minutes, how are
you managing this?

Speaker 7 (13:35):
I feel like I've sort of been fitness is probably
my strength.

Speaker 8 (13:39):
So I've always sort of had it there.

Speaker 7 (13:41):
But yeah, I don't know, like it's just there's some
times there where it gets quick and there's some six agains,
but after, you know, there was a stay during the
second half, I feel like we've had our best de
set and then sort of unlucky enough, but he's let
one go there and then we've you know, it was
a fairtey six agains, So I feel like you just

(14:02):
got to connect with all of our middles and we
got quick there.

Speaker 3 (14:05):
So yeah, what's the secret to this fitness base of yours?

Speaker 8 (14:10):
I got no secrets. Yeah, I've got no secrets.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
But you must be absolutely shattered at times during a match,
you know, when you're just out there constantly, the amount
of tackling you're doing, the amount of carriage you're doing.

Speaker 7 (14:23):
Yeah, I think maybe probably one thing I try and
do is sort of just feel like, how are they feeling?

Speaker 8 (14:28):
You know what I mean? So if I'm sort of
feeling like I'm tired.

Speaker 7 (14:31):
I sort of go back in my head and say
they're doing worse of it. So that's what I sort
of try and do mentally to try and keep myself
moving forward. Is how are they feeling in a way,
So it's a bit of a mental way there.

Speaker 8 (14:43):
Just keep moving So, yeah, because.

Speaker 4 (14:45):
It as a mental battle, right, Yeah, it is.

Speaker 7 (14:48):
So there's definitely physical and there's a mental part of it.
So you know, you've got to be physically fit, but
then there's also a little bit of a mental side
of it as well, where you can't let it get
to you.

Speaker 3 (14:58):
And how are you feeling about the fact that you've
been talked about as a state of origin contender?

Speaker 8 (15:05):
Yeah, that means a lot.

Speaker 7 (15:06):
I would love to put the bl jersey on being
in this stuff while I was seeing Proud, so I
like it's a bit of positive, but I'm in the
conversation there. But yeah, I'm just going to keep paying
for these boys back here, this is mom, this is
my home now, So I'll just keep focusing on putting
week in, week out, and then hopefully accolades come off

(15:28):
the back because.

Speaker 3 (15:29):
There must be quite inspiring to see your name in
that in that frame, but also that you're on the
daily in letter and stuff things like that.

Speaker 8 (15:36):
Yeah, I don't try and look at that too much.

Speaker 7 (15:38):
Even though it keeps getting popped up my mates, you know,
family and all that keeps sending me.

Speaker 8 (15:43):
I try not to look at that too much. You know,
we're only early in the season. But yeah, that's what
I mean.

Speaker 7 (15:49):
I'm just going to keep trying to put a good
performance in here for the Warriors and yeah.

Speaker 4 (15:54):
In the final one Jackson, thank you for your time.
What do you do on What do you do.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
The day after a match to recover after this these
eighty minute efforts? You know, what is your typical postmatch day?

Speaker 4 (16:05):
Look like?

Speaker 7 (16:07):
I'd like to be a little bit active, you know,
not just lay on the couch so you know, if
it's gone for the coffee. Even sometimes if I'm feeling
not too bad, player bit of golf with the boys laughing.
He wants to game a golf this week hopefully, but yeah,
I don't know, try not to say, just on the
couch and.

Speaker 8 (16:26):
Try and you know, get the body moving a little bit.
Maybe come in here, have an extra sauna or a
nice bath and just just try.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
And get moving a little bit great and for you
there Birds, great insights from Jackson Ford, who is just
showing no signs of slowing down. I have to ask you, Birds,
because I think in the last couple of weeks you've
said you wonder whether there's enough that there's going to
stay in the tank for Jackson forward. Have you come
around like it just feels like he can replicate this

(16:54):
week and week out as crazy as it is.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
Yeah, and I love the line about what you do
after the match, Oh, I might go and play it
ten holes of golf. I mean, I mean the rest
of us, you know, mines of that you just want
to incredible. I've partly come I still think that that
he needs to be managed. Like Andrew Webs has always
made the point, he's the sort of guy that gets
better as the game goes on. But for example, against
the Titans, I'm not sure why he couldn't have come

(17:19):
off with ten minutes to go, you know, for example.
So I hope whenever there's a chance, if they do
have some decent margins, occasionally he does get a rest
because he can keep doing it. But you just you
just never know. You don't want to, you don't want to,
You know, it's like a turtle Corolla. You can drive it,

(17:40):
you know, NonStop, every day, all day, but occasionally might
need a little rest.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
Yeah, it's fair enough. It's actually interesting watching the game back.
He shuffled out to left edge, and I think it's
the first time this season I'd seen Ford, Clark, Barnett
and for Shaharas all on the field at the same time.
I think that was more due to I don't want
to play Kirk Capele eighty minutes on his first game
back from a calf injury. They had an hia situation
with Ali Latawa later as well, just before we closed

(18:08):
loop on this match, burge and look ahead to this weekend.
Those three tries in ten minutes. Obviously, that score line
now or for me anyway, certainly flatters gold Coaster. The
game was done. But what was Andrew webs to like
in the press conference was he asked about those those
three tries and will that annoy him in the review

(18:29):
this week?

Speaker 3 (18:30):
He wasn't happy. He wasn't happy, which is good. That's
a good sign, you know, that's that's not what they want.
I think he realized that probably, you know, there was
a bit of my theory anyway, there's certainly a bit
of mental, emotional and physical fatigue from Melbourne. You know,
they to play like they did, to do what they did,
Everything went into that performance. It probably got them in

(18:50):
the last fifteen minutes plus they were so far ahead
they sort of knew they were home. But he didn't
like it. He didn't, He certainly didn't like it. He
also they made the point that the positives far outweighed
the negatives, and I think he was happy with the
first with the first fifty minutes. But just the other
thing I wanted to say about Jackson quickly was, you know,
it's quite arble. When he came to the club into

(19:10):
twenty twenty two, no one knew who was you know.
Then he had a couple of good seasons, but even
last year he'd wander through off the games and not
really be noticed. But on on Saturday night, you know,
I'm waiting to talk to him. There's kids everywhere Jackson, Jackson, Jackson.
I had to get the media manager, Richard Beck, to
sort of, you know, bring him over to me. They
wanted photos of them, they wanted autograph. So it just

(19:32):
shows that you used the word before cold hero. He's
become a bit of a cult hero and just also
extremely popular. So very happy for him because he seems
a genuine nice guy and he's just so popular with
his teammates.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
Big League Podcast, Well, let's move ahead to this weekend
and it's the Wellington Wars on Antac Day, Saturday, making
the trip down to the Capitol. Hopefully that weather is improving.
Thoughts to all our Big League Podcast listeners in the
southern part of the North Islands, all the crazy weather
happening at the moment, But bird Joam, can you get

(20:10):
your thoughts just topline thoughts? Firstly, what does it say
about rugby league in this country and the Warriors movement
basically since the twenty twenty three year Henry Stadium as
it's now known these days formerly Westpac or the Cake Tin.
I think they can fit thirty five thousand in there
and it is a sellout. And this is on the

(20:32):
same weekend we're down in my neck of the woods
in christ Church. We've got the new stadium coming online
and Super around ten of the eleven Super Rugby teams.
But twenty five thousand is capacity. Still is a sellout
for Friday night. But what does it say about rugby league.
What does it say about the Warriors that they can
fill a thirty five thousand seat stadium out of town,

(20:54):
or at least out of Auckland.

Speaker 3 (20:57):
It's remarkable. You know. What it says is they are
currently they're the people's team. You know, they are the
people's team. I mean, as you say, it started with
the twenty three out the wires. It was a massive
high been the start of twenty four season to the
middle and then it did actually die away a bit
because of the results. It came back last year and
now it's really back because they're playing so well, because

(21:18):
there's so much excitement about some of the players they've got,
and they've just they've just captured the moment. I mean,
I was talking with our sports center through at the Herald,
Cameron Millan. He made the point, you know, the last
couple of years, no one really goes to sport in
Wellington at the moment. It's been a real struggle.

Speaker 6 (21:34):
It has.

Speaker 3 (21:35):
I'm not criticizing anyone. It's been a struggle for the Phoenix.
It's been a struggle for the Hurricanes, who are having
a great season but they can't really get the crowds.
The stadium design doesn't help for oval, sorry for rugby
or league or football, cittlingers and help and even the
All Blacks, remember they played Argentina. There are a couple of
years ago was in a sellout, and even last year

(21:57):
when they played the spring Box, I'm pretty sure that
much didn't sell out. So the Warriors, it's a novelty.
They don't come that often, but it still speaks volumes
because Wellington back in the day in the eighties was
big being in rugby league, but it certainly lessened a
bit since then. You know, I don't know, I mean,
it's just it's quite incredible, isn't it. There's going to
be their fourth highest crowd in Warriors' history, apart from

(22:23):
they played three games at Edon Park where they played
more than that, but there were three games at Eton
Park and Seat of Talking twenty eleven, twenty thirteen, maybe
twenty twelve where they got you know, thirty five thirty seven.
This will be the fourth highest.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
That's some stat chat. That is why you are here
on the Big League Podcast. Michael Burgess. Let's get into selections.
We're recording this Tuesday morning, so six pm TLT. Teamless
Tuesday that first list comes out. As we know with
Andrew Webster, he'll probably make some adjustment adjustments, as he
did last weekend with Mitch Barnett, and we didn't get
it to it Burge during our Titans review. But Charles

(23:01):
nickel Kluk stars straight back at fullback. Poor old taintopicky
doesn't do much wrong and slides to the interchange went unused.
What did you make it that call?

Speaker 8 (23:14):
Firstly?

Speaker 2 (23:14):
And what are you expecting this weekend? What do you
make of how chance went at the back?

Speaker 3 (23:20):
I was surprised. I really didn't think he would change
a winning team. I guess when you got Mitch Baynett available,
I was surprised. Again. Andrew Webster said he could have
been seven eight weeks after surgery and he's come back
with him two and he wants to sort of tough
it out. So that's great. I hope it's not. I
hope they're not taking a chance. But fantastic that he's back.
So maybe someone like him the co captain. But Taine,

(23:43):
you know, he's played, he's played really well and I
thought he deserved one more week at least. The problem
that Webster has got is he doesn't want to have
the conversation with a Chance and say Chance, you've got
to play reserve grade, you know that, because that would
have been the conversation and it would have been a
hard conversation to have. But I'm not sure, you know,

(24:04):
I think there's a real balance here. He's lucky Andrew
Webster that Tane is such He's such a great bloke.
He is such a club man. He won't be kicking stones.
Him and Chance get them really well. They actually get
him really well, which doesn't always happen, but it's amazing.
They want to get the best out of each other.
It's not completely conclusive yet, is it. I'm not sure

(24:24):
what you think, but is my read on it is
Tayane is pushing chants harder and harder.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
Yep. And as I said last week, I don't think
you can move Alia from right center. So there's just
a straight shootout between Charms and Tayne, and I do
wonder two, which gets me onto my next talking point
from a selection standpoint in the backs is can you
afford to have a Lofiana Carnpererra and Tayne to a

(24:53):
Picky in the same back three? In terms of you know,
you might you have that sort of zippy pace, excitement
around the ball, but then you lose a little bit
of yardage carry, you lose a little bit. Perhaps those
more games we think you might be tested on the
edges defensively. Because of course, Adam Pompey, who from if

(25:18):
memory serves, played every game last year, is now back.
He served his two week suspension. But Roger to Vasischeck
has been a revelation at left center and that partnership
with a cart Perira on that left edge is humming.
So what do you do there?

Speaker 3 (25:39):
If you're Andrew Webster, I'm not sure he I think
this is a massive conundrum for Andrew Webster. Pompey was
brilliant last year. He is in my mind, the best
specialist center at the club. He's defensively so solid normally,
and then's attacking games underrated. He's got the left footstep.

(25:59):
He can be a bit you know, in and out,
but but he was much more consistent last year, so
you'd think he's got to be in the team. But
also Andrew Webster not going to drop Roger two of
us a sheck two of us. Heck's got to be
in the certain in the in the in the seventeenth,
well in the thirteen, So then you know, maybe maybe
Lofi does does miss out if Roger goes back to Wing,

(26:22):
you know, can you drop Eli Laotao? I don't think so.
I think he is. He is a point of difference.
He's a point of difference. He's something they need. Look,
the good side of all this is whoever they pick,
it's going to be a good team and it's going
to drive standards. I haven't really answered your question that
I'm aware, but I think it's incredibly hard to leave

(26:45):
out Pompey. But I know he won't leave out Roger,
and I know they like the pace. I think the
point you made is a good one. Though. Against certain
teams you could afford to have Satanane and Loffi there,
and against other teams you look at how it matches
up and you're like, Okay, we can't have that scenario
this week, which is fine. You know, it's it's fine.
I think you don't see it much in then err

(27:06):
but I don't mind if they change here and there
every now and again rather than trying to run with
the same guys. But I think the selection decisions that
Andrew Ribbs has got to make this season both in
the backs and the forwards, is the most complicated of
his tenure.

Speaker 2 (27:27):
I'd agree with that, and I think not that it
matters totally, but in the background, I think this could
split the fan base a little bit, perhaps the same
degrees that the haves. But tonight, if we see a
scenario where can Pereira, as an example, isn't in that
starting thirteen and Pompey's back, I can just see the

(27:50):
comments already on Facebook and Instagram. So why are you
changing again? What do you know? But at the end
of the day, they are five and two and looking
very good at this point of the season.

Speaker 1 (28:05):
The Big League pod the Warrior is bad wagon sense
d one.

Speaker 2 (28:10):
All right, let's get into predictions and Michael Burgess again,
really tough around last week, wasn't it classic NRL? This
is about as NRL as it gets, I thought last week.
So we have Paramatter they have fifty foot on them
at home by the Gold Coast of the week prior
going up against the Bulldogs who had just beaten the

(28:31):
red the Reddest of hot Kenrith Panthers, and then of
course Paramatta beat the Canterbury Bulldogs. Yeah, anyway, let's kill things.
I'd have to go back and have a listen. I'm sorry, I've.

Speaker 3 (28:45):
Got a feeling I did. But anyway, I'm not surprised
you forgot that. That's a right. Let's get into this week.

Speaker 2 (28:51):
If I'm back next week, I'll confirm for our us
we actually need to tally them up properly. But Thursday
another one. I know I didn't pick the Broncos against
the Tigers. Tigers finally had a loss and Tigers kicked
things off Thursday night against the Camera Raiders. I know
for a fact, Birge, I picked the Raiders and you

(29:12):
picked the Storm last week.

Speaker 3 (29:13):
Yes, you did, and that was turned out to be
a great pick because the Raiders were Raiders were excellent,
and the Storm came back. But the Raiders showed glimpses
of last season. I thought, I hope that's a turnaround,
turnaround point for them, and I'm going to go with
the Raiders for this one. I just think the boost
I'll get from that Storm one will be enough to
get them past the Tigers.

Speaker 2 (29:34):
I'm going to stay with the Tigers. I think, Benji,
will you know, perhaps a nice point in the season
to get away loss and just go back and have
another lift and no Hudson Young due to suspension for camera.
So I'll go with the Tigers, Cowboys Sharks Friday night
up in Townsville.

Speaker 3 (29:54):
And just quickly, how good does it see Bingo on
the sideline? I just love that and just the crowd
going nuts around him. I just think that that adds
so much to the tribal atmosphere Sharks for me here,
I still like what the Cowboys been doing sometimes, but
I just don't think they have the quality across there,
across their roster compared to the Sharks.

Speaker 2 (30:14):
Yeah, I like teams off the buy, so I will
go with Cronuller. But it is a tough place to
go and win. Up in North Queensland Broncos Bulldogs. Credit
to the Broncos. They lost pay Hess during that game
against the Tigers. They are already without Reese wilsh Patrick
Harrigan suspended, so you're looking at a fair chunk of
their salary cap and they still find a way under

(30:37):
Michael maguire. They host the Bulldogs Friday at Uncle.

Speaker 3 (30:42):
Yeah, this is just so many massive matches at the moment.
I don't know what's happening with the straw, but it
is remarkable. I like the home team here. I think
they would have got a lot out of what they
did against the Tigers. As you say, I mean there
was one point in the match where they had had
four or five tackles. I think it was in the
albotion twenty two the Tigers had thirty one. You know,
just just crazy stuff. So the resilience they showed, even

(31:05):
without the players that they're missing, I think will be
enough to get them get them home in this one.

Speaker 2 (31:12):
Yeah, disappointing. I thought the Bulldogs, as mentioned off, that
very impressive when over Penrith to then lose to the Els.
I know there was a lot of excitement around Paramatta.
They celebrated their nineteen eighty six premiership winning team during
that when on Sunday, a lot of emotion, a lot
of feeling backs against the wall and the like. But Yeah,
didn't like what I saw from the Bulldogs. And I

(31:35):
think the Broncos very tricky to be at home in particular,
so I think they'll get the job done on to
Super Saturday. And we all saw at coming Birge the
Dragons have made that coaching change oh and seven start
for them. As of time of recording, I haven't actually
seen who is taking charge of Saint George this weekend,
but this is a traditional Anzac Day fixture. They host

(31:58):
the Roosters.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
And for that reason it should be closer than you
expect the Antic Day games normally are. Plus there'd be
a bit of a new coach bounce, you'd think, but
the Roosters have got far too many guns for this
Dragons team. I just can't see the Dragons getting that close.

Speaker 2 (32:19):
Yeah, I agree, I think the Roosters are starting to
look pretty ominous. I think the Warriors got them at
a very good time. Yes, and was it round one
or round two? Speaking of eight o five kickoff at
Henry Stadium in Wellington, the Warrior is hosting the Dolphins,
who must say Burge pushed Penrith all the way to

(32:42):
Oh sorry, they drew with the Penrith Panthers. They should
know that by now. Unfortunate not to bank any points
for that draw, but difficult for them to go from
Darwin to Wellington in the space of a week. The Dolphins.
But where are you leaning this one?

Speaker 8 (33:02):
For me?

Speaker 2 (33:02):
I feel like the Warriors should get the job done.
But it feels like another one of those ones. Aron
when too comfortable saying that, And as we know in
the NRL, if you're a couple of percent of you
can be found out.

Speaker 3 (33:13):
Yeah, if you're feeling too comfortable, can we just say,
first of all, mate, how good is it to have
ansit games in New Zealand? You know, after those years
and years of punishing games in Melbourne didn't finish till midnight.
I'd be sitting up to one o'clock trying to write stories,
wake up the next morning in a bad moodle day
with my wife and just think why did I sit
through that?

Speaker 8 (33:33):
You know?

Speaker 3 (33:33):
And it just it was every year the same thing.
Isn't it so nice that the games are here now
to be a fantastic occasion? Wellington hasn't been a great
place to go for the Warriors. They do not have
a good record there. It won't be easy for that reason.
It's a it's a tricky ground that wind swells around.
But with that crowd, with that occasion, you'd back them

(33:54):
to do well. And you make a great point actually
about the Dolphins. They would have had what to get
from there? Where there were to where they've got to
come to Wellington three flights or something. It's a big ask,
but they'll be up for it too.

Speaker 4 (34:04):
Jeez.

Speaker 3 (34:04):
It's a players love these occasions.

Speaker 2 (34:08):
They definitely do. I'm very much looking forward to what
hopefully sneak a bit of Warriors viewing in amongst all
the Super Round festivities here in christ Church, and then
it's into This is a cracking game actually for another reason.
The Storm five losses in a row, birch back in
Melbourne and hosting the South Sydney rabbit O's fresh off

(34:32):
Latrell Mitchell just running a muck with four tries for
the first time in his NRL career in a match.

Speaker 3 (34:38):
Yeah. I don't know. I really don't know what some
of these tips. But what I do know is this
is Bennett Bellamy and Bellamy has got the best record
against Wayne Bennett than any other coach, certainly an the
coach still coaching, and I think in history he really has,
so I expect him to continue that. I think the

(35:00):
Storm will finally break this crazy streak. But I said
that last week and I was very wrong. So let's see.
The rabbit Os will have a lot to prove and
Bennett would love to get one over Bellamy and just
continue this misery. But I will. I'll stick with the
Storm and I know you won't. The two by the way, No,
I won't.

Speaker 2 (35:21):
No, I'm just I'm just going off recent evidence. I
can't back the Storm with any confidence, even at home,
which is just a wild thing to say out loud.
But Bunnies for me, I just think the way that
they attack on that left edge. Yeah, who's going to
be trying to stop Latrell, Mitch, Nick Meaney or someone random?
Good luck? Okay, let's get into Sunday, Newcastle hosting the

(35:46):
Penrith Panthers.

Speaker 3 (35:48):
Yeah, this is where hopefully it gets a bit easy
to pick someone. I mean, Newcastle are never easy at home,
no matter what kind of team they've got in the field.
They'll bring a lot, especially on a ensic weekend on weekend.
But the Panthers your Panthers for me. I mean they
got a jail and Darwin did well and they're the
kind of team that move on from there.

Speaker 2 (36:08):
Agreed, yeap Panther's four mine and the last game of
the round Golcos Titans on a buy for the first
time in the Kieran Foreign era. Manly back at Brookvale
or Four Pines or whatever it's called these days, and
they're hosting Paramatta, who had their best winner of the
season last week against the Bulldogs.

Speaker 3 (36:27):
And this is a brilliant old rivalry. Another one. They
played three Grand finals in a row from memory and
something like eighty one three something like that, So yeah,
this means a lot this match. Everyone's probably thinking, oh wins,
the foreign effect going to wear off a bit, and

(36:48):
the Eels of rebounder spectaculary. So I'm not sure where
this is going. It's at Brookvale. You'd think Manly it
would be hard to beat at Brookie. So I'm just
going to go with Manly because they're at home and
because the Eels do have some players out, but man
the Eels were good.

Speaker 2 (37:05):
Yeah, I'm going to go this is my upset of
the round. I'm going to go. Paramount of beats Manly
at Brookvale, and I think in the last three or
four years when Tom Travoivich hasn't played, he's out with
a hamstring injury, their record just goes through the floor.
So I'm going to say Paramata get up. But it
wouldn't truck me if on emotion alone of manly being

(37:26):
at home under Karen for and who they adore. They
get the job done, but I will. My official tip
is paramatter That'll do it. Michael Burgess for another week,
looking forward to Saturday night see if the Warriors can
go three wins on the bounce in Wellington, looking forward
to that one eight point five kickoff against the Dolphins.

(37:47):
But my thanks to you great to get those interviews
as always as well, and my thanks to our producer
Mark Kelly for putting this all together. My name is
Nick Purely. Enjoy the rest of your week.
