Speaker 3 (00:54):
Let me tell you what, I got a little intimidated
when the guy walked in. He's like, comes in, he's strapping,
he's yoked, he's working out, the whole thing. I kind
of puffed my chest right away.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
I didn't like it.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
And look, he'd look nicely. He's dressed. Tell me, I thought,
this is gonna know, well, we want he's gonna tell
me down a little bit.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
We want everyone to feel comfortable. So you know, guy
and I are dressed handsomely, and you know it's all right.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
But welcome guy, Thank you, thank I'm happy to be here,
and I won't make you feel bad that you know that.

fifty years I still am.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yeah, still your baby, and Andrew, Andrew, what you're almost forty.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
I'm in my forties.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
Yeah, I'm in my forties.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Six months.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
Yeah, for the tail end of them, tail end of them.
But thank you so much for joining us.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
You know it's a big weekend.

Speaker 4 (01:40):

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Fourth annual uh inaugural, I'm sorry, not in augirl.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
They'd be the first annual.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Consecutive consecutive golf outing here at Pebble Beach where we
do a big Bachelor reunion and we do a whole
bunch of podcasts, So glad to have you be a
part of it.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
It's a it's a family tradition, you know.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
We like to keep lovelling.

Speaker 5 (01:58):
I love it.

Speaker 4 (01:59):
And we're not.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Sure if this is either one of ours third or fourth.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
No, no, no, were I get invited every year.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
He's been here seventeen years consecutively. Mine didn't know they
were doing.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
The show, not as much.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
But this we were talking earlier, like this is such
a great like it opens up the Bachelor world a
little bit to have this other era be part of
it and offer other perspectives. And when you walked in
what you said to me, You're like, oh, two of
the guys that know my experience and know one perspective.
But that's why we're here. We want to we want
to hear it from you and what you know not

(02:30):
only you know on the on the show, in your experience,
but like like kind of life after and all of
these other opportunities here playing golf for the first time,
yeah a long.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
Time I am.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Yeah. Well, let's start at the top, like how did
the whole opportunity even come to play for you?

Speaker 4 (02:43):
Like, how did you end up on the show? In
the first place.

Speaker 5 (02:46):
You know.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
I had a a woman reach out to me and
we were talking and she said, you know, I I
think you'd be a really good on a reality TV
show called a Golden Bachelorette.

Speaker 5 (02:58):
And I said, I have no idea what you're talking about.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
So you've never seen the show?

Speaker 1 (03:02):
You never even heard of I've never seen. I knew
there was The Bachelor and the Bachelorette. You know, you
see some of the commercials, but I knew nothing more
than you get a rose that's good, you don't get
a rose that's bad. And then at the end the
young kids hook up.

Speaker 5 (03:15):
Yeah, and you know that's all I knew about the show.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Yeah, so somebody. So I knew nothing about it. And
so I then reached out to my to my sisters.
I say, have you guys ever heard of a show
called Golden Bachelor Bachelorette? And they go, oh my god, yes,
you know, And I said, well, somebody wants me to
be on this thing, or I should apply for it.
They go, you got to do it. And my nephew

(03:37):
is about forty, said, uncle guy. He goes, go for it,
he goes, he.

Speaker 5 (03:40):
Goes, he goes. Even if you don't do it. He goes,
you can always put in your back pocket.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
So, you know, I send in the you know, the
ask five five quessure, you know, told me send five
pictures and five other things, and then I got the questionnaire.
I don't even remember a single question. I remember one
question on the questionnaire.

Speaker 5 (03:58):
The rest of it. I just filled that as fast
as I could, because I was it the std question. No,
it wasn't that one. It was.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
Oh my god, they did ask me about that.

Speaker 5 (04:11):
No.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
The only I remember was like they said, do you
have a Hollywood crush?

Speaker 5 (04:15):
And that's the only one I remember.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Oh, and do you Yeah, what'd you put Diane Lane?

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Diane Lane?

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Choice?

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Good pull on that one. You're listening to this.

Speaker 5 (04:27):
I'm still out here.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
This is good, you know, because this was going to
be one of my questions to you is who and
you know, who's your Hollywood crush?

Speaker 4 (04:33):
You could find her today?

Speaker 5 (04:34):
That that was it.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
I just always she's a terrific act actor, actress, and
she just has this this quality of class to her
that you know, I've always admired. And so she's about
my age, she's like fifty nine sixty or.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
Something like that.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
I know, she got divorce from you know, one of.

Speaker 5 (04:55):
The Brolin brothers or something like that.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
Josh anyway, Josh Brown, Yes, because yeah, yeah, so anyway,
So that's how so I I you know, I went
through the application, to be honest with you, I didn't
think i'd be chosen. I just but I just kept
going through and one zoom interview after another after another,
and and you know, I still wouldn't even sure I
wanted to, like really go through with it, but I

(05:19):
was just going through the process. And a lot of
things happened in my life over the last the six
months leading up to the show that were pretty significant
milestones for me in my life to be able to
move forward after my my divorce. And I finally said,
you know what, I'm going to do this. And then
right after that, Jackie called and said, hey, You've been selected,

(05:40):
and I said, yay me.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
But so you but you were your career working at
the time that you that that this whole thing interrupted
your life, but you felt like you were in the
right place to do something like.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Yeah, interesting enough, this is one of the milestones I
was talking about. So one of them was is in
April I did this two and a half week. Unexpect
the road trip, my oldest daughter was running the Boston Marathon.
I flew back to Boston from the West Coast, spent
four days with you know, my daughter McKenzie and my
grandson he Don, and then she ran the marathon. And
from there I have another daughter that had gone to

(06:13):
Oxford University together NBA and was living in London. So
I just said, you know what, I'm going to get
on the plane. I flew to London, spent four days
with her, did some great stuff. I went out to Liverpool,
home of the Fab four, and I'm a beatlemaniac and
self professor Beetle make. I had one of the best
days I've ever had by myself, you know. And then
from there I went to Atlanta and visited my grandson
some more, went to Dallas Fort Worth, visited you know,

(06:34):
family and friends where I grew up, and then went
to San Diego when my sons lives. I got back
and I just you know, it's like two and a
half weeks on expended. I said, you know what, I'm
about to turn sixty six. I've got thirty five years
working in the same er said.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Right, the same the same hospital.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
The same hospital, same ar was like, you know, I
mean I had done everything I wanted to do in
my career. I was the medical director, chairman, I was
the chief of staff of the hospital. So I did
it straight of work. But then I was also mostly
I was just as we called the pit doc, you
know we you know, the years working in the pit.
And I had done that, and I just said, you know,
it's it's time. I wanted to do what I want
when I want. And so in April, long before I

(07:14):
heard from the show, I decided to retire.

Speaker 5 (07:17):
And I things, it's just I knew.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
People said you're going to know when you know, and
that's what happened. I just said, this feels right. I
wanted to go out on top. I didn't want to
be a doc that just stays.

Speaker 5 (07:29):
Around a little too long. It's a little bit, you know,
just to ask leave it like.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
I didn't want them to have that uncomfortable conversation.

Speaker 5 (07:37):
And I even told him I So I went and
I and I and I decided to do that.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Interestingly enough, and you know, the show calls and so
and I had even asked, you know, you know, the
people I work, I said, hey, is there any way
I can get like, you know, June and July off
And they said, uh in the ear, no, I said,
I said, even for a guy like me, I've been
doing this for thirty high started the group for Christ's sake,
you know.

Speaker 5 (07:58):
Anyway, So it was.

Speaker 1 (07:59):
Almost like it was it was wonderful timing for me
to do it. So when I won the show, it
was very easy. I didn't have to worry about coming
back to work or doing anything like that. I worked
my last shift about a week before I went on
the show.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
Oh no, kidding, Yeah, Wow, perfect timing.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
It seems like the people that we talked to that
I've talked to over the years that have had a
good experience kind of life, had had kind of shuffled
the deck in such a way that they were ready
for something like this that the show wasn't interruptive to
their life, but rather it was additive to it, you know.
And so now like so afterwards, like in hindsight, do

(08:33):
you think it was additive to your life?

Speaker 5 (08:35):
Absolutely?

Speaker 3 (08:35):
And even though it didn't maybe turn out the no.

Speaker 5 (08:38):
It really was.

Speaker 1 (08:39):
And I you know, I talk about you know this
quote transformational journey that I went through, and it was
all these things that kind of led up to that
this show was a culmination of all these significant milestones
in my life that allowed me to move forward. I
went on it, and then it just allowed me to
open up. It gave me time to be very introspective.

(08:59):
My daughter sent me a Mulskin journal and said that
maybe you should journal your your your.

Speaker 5 (09:05):
Time on there. I did.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
I started on the plane on the way down to
LA and I journaled every day for forty five days.
I went through an entire book, went to a second
one days they would like the one on one dates
and the hometowns. I would write twenty pages.

Speaker 5 (09:21):
Yeah, yeah, just I mean it's.

Speaker 6 (09:22):
Like chronically everything that happened, then chronically what was happening,
but also spending time how is feeling describing you know,
my relationships with some of the other you know, you
know guys on the show, you know friendships I had developed,
and I just used it as a way to kind of,
you know, go back and and think about my life
and think about things and where I wanted to go.

Speaker 5 (09:41):
And so that was very therapeutic for me.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
So when you ask that the it enhanced it, and
I will say that, you know, people say you know, Gosha,
it was really hard for you.

Speaker 5 (09:52):
At the end, I said, you.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Know, I didn't win, but I really won, Yeah, because
I got what I needed out of the show.

Speaker 5 (09:59):
And I I think, you know.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
I thank the show Vaccination for allowing being part of that.
I think Joan for allowing me to get to this
point and be able to feel like I can you know,
that could truly love again, you know, and like you
and be I opened up and I didn't. I didn't
think that was really Before I went down there, I said,
this isn't possible. And even when I was down there,

(10:23):
most of the time I put up barriers. I was
very guard I said, this is silliness, as I we
tell it. I said, I said, this is fantasy land,
this is not reality. But you know, it allowed me
to think and I eventually just let myself. I said,
you know what, just go with it, you know, and
don't try to manipulate anything. Just go with your feelings
and emotions. And you guys have been there. It's it's

(10:45):
it's an interesting phenomenon that you go through. And and
it doesn't matter because I had watched some of you know,
I went back and watched some of these shows.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
I was like, oh my god, this is crazy. You know,
I can't possibly do this.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
I don't think you could have gone back far enough to.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
Nom x Machine because then yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
Black and white or like you know, a protector you
can twist.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
You're you're you got you guys. I liked this real Okay,
I'll just say this real quick. Was was I didn't
even know the show was on ABC. I got home,
somebody said on September fifteenth, when they mailed announcement, they said.

Speaker 5 (11:20):
I just saw you on the ABC. I said why.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
They said, well, you're on Going Best and I said,
that's on ABC. Because when I watched it, I just
rented Hulu, right and I didn't associate it with anything.

Speaker 5 (11:31):
And so I was like, they go, I go, oh
my god.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
And that's why I realized, Okay, this thing's on prime
time on ABC at eight o'clock. I said, Okay, this
is going to be an interesting weeks or whatever.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
Yeah, Andrew and I were talking earlier. You know.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
One of the things that's sort of been referenced a
lot is that the Golden Bat brought the whole franchise
back to a little bit more of a I don't
want to say kinder, gentler, because that just seems ridiculous,
but just kind of like what it was supposed to
be intended for, right, which was hopefully these people find love.

Speaker 4 (12:11):
But hey, the guys don't have to hate each other.
They can get along.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
And so I was on the Bachelrette before I was
on the Bachelor, much like you were on the Bachelorette.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
I loved the.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Friendships I made from that experience. And then you know,
and then you get opened up to all these other people.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
And Andrew and I.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Andrew was the first Bachelor that I met, you know,
before I even became the Bachelor, and I was like, oh.

Speaker 4 (12:29):
My god, he's so nice.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
And you know, it's like you start to like connect
all the dots and realize that I mean, the cast
thing is really the biggest part of this show from
the standpoint of who they picked to be the lead
as well as who they picked to be the people
that are, you know, there to meet this individual and
meet each other. But good for you, Good for you
finding that positive that silver lining.

Speaker 4 (12:49):
Turning it table was good.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
I cannot thank them enough. It's just it's it was
life changing for me. That sounds kind of crazy, but
it just wasn't the show, but that was a culmination.
They didn't allow me to take it to that whole
another level of where I you know, where I was
in my life, you know, and uh, yeah, I can't.

Speaker 5 (13:06):
I can't be more happy. I had heard it on
the way down.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
Uh, you know you all there's a bunch of you
on the same plane.

Speaker 5 (13:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (13:12):
You get off the plane and everybody kind of surrounds you.

Speaker 3 (13:14):
Oh are you guys?

Speaker 4 (13:15):
Guys?

Speaker 3 (13:16):
I mean, how's that feel?

Speaker 2 (13:17):
Is that something? I mean, you don't you don't get
that probably a lot in the e r as much
as you would have wanted to.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
Yeah, you know you mean you mean the the attention from.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
The Yeah, a lot of attention from this, you know.

Speaker 5 (13:25):
I it really hit me.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
I went down to Las Vegas, uh and joined my
I got my son the flying from San Diego and
we went to the Sphere to see the Eagles.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
Wow.

Speaker 5 (13:37):
And I'm in this.

Speaker 1 (13:39):
We're in the you know, the cause Cosm, Cosmopolitan, and
there's you know, there's hordes of people.

Speaker 5 (13:44):
Right.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
I couldn't go. I was just blown away. I couldn't
go twenty five feet without somebody stopping me.

Speaker 5 (13:50):
And they were going guy guy, your guy, You're like,
oh my god, you know, you.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
Know, I said, holy Schwalley. I said, there's a lot
of people who like this stuff and watch it, but
I didn't. I didn't sense it because I, you know,
I don't Reno. And so it's you know, it's a
very small community. Everybody in Reno. It's like on fire
because you know, I'm you know, I'm representing you know,
you know, my hometown, you know which I you know,
I love. And it was great, you know, and and
very very complimentary that every said, oh my god, you

(14:15):
you you you projected yourself so well and you've represented
Reno so well.

Speaker 5 (14:21):
And yeah, and I I you know, that's that's great.
I feel that right. It makes you feel very good.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
Kids proud.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
The kids, Yeah, you know, I still wonder they I
think they were a little hesitant because they you know,
mostly they just didn't want to see me get hurt, right,
you know. And they also, you know, we're afraid of
you know, social media. And I said, I said, listen,
I said, I got, I got through a divorce of
thirty four years.

Speaker 5 (14:43):
I can handle anything.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Yeah, you know, it is tough, but they were My
kids have been so supportive.

Speaker 5 (14:48):
They were. They've been so good about the whole thing.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
Because you know, me know, they're they're kind of thrust
into thet I'm like a little bit that they didn't
expect yer exactly, you know, and they're on the hometown
visit and they're they're on TV and all their people
all over the country. I mean, you know, are you
know reaching out to them and they're like, I don't
know if I really signed up for this, but they've
been so good and they've been so gracious I And
that's one of the other things that happened in my

(15:13):
transformational journey is was there's like five things, but the
third one is is I developed an even better relationship
with my children.

Speaker 5 (15:21):
That's awesome.

Speaker 4 (15:23):
Yeah, never too late to do that either, That's right.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
I got a five year old, six year old and
the three year old.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
Yeah. Savor the moments.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Yeah, well I'm savoring this moment right now that I'm
not having to, you know.

Speaker 4 (15:33):
Break up a fight.

Speaker 5 (15:34):
I feel pretty good about it.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
Let me ask you this, So, have you been around
Joan much or Joan and Chalk much since the show's
finale and and you will be this weekend.

Speaker 4 (15:46):
I mean, have you have you thought about that? And
how how do you feel about all that?

Speaker 1 (15:49):
Yeah, to answer your question, Uh, I've spoken with Chalk
several times. It's almost like it seemed like we talked
like once a week, not for a lot, and you know,
and it's more of just like, hey, how are you doing?

Speaker 5 (16:01):
Is everything going okay?

Speaker 1 (16:02):
Because Chuck and I were roommates, so it was it
was Chalk, it was it was Gary, it was Charles
l and Michael and and so we spent a lot
of time together, you know.

Speaker 5 (16:14):
And so I spoke with Chuck.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
I saw Joan obviously at the finale, but that's you know,
on the stage, and you ever long don't have a
lot of time to really talk. I saw her at
the the after party, but probably only got to talk
to her for like, you know, a minute, you know,
so not much so, but I'm very comfortable seeing her.

(16:36):
I you know, I thank her, you know, because she
she allowed me to move forward, and you know, and
I mean, how can I be upset about that? And
obviously at the end of the show, I mean the
emotions you saw at the end, those are really emotions.
I tell people, I said, I say, I can't I
can't fake this stuff, I said, But I said, I said,
you know, they said, well, did you really fall in love?

(16:58):
I said, I say, at the moment, yes, I said,
but mostly as I look back on it, I fell
in love with the idea falling in love.

Speaker 5 (17:07):
And that's you know, that's a win too. It is
absolutely a win.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
And that again that's allowed me to like know that
I can feel this way again because I didn't think
I could. I thought, this is you know, I'm just
going to you know, get a old shrivel up and
you know, and you know be watching, you know, with
a little fortune every night, you know, sparked.

Speaker 3 (17:27):
Or like a like an interest or a spark and
like a reinvigoration, which I think there's so many good outcomes.
It can happen, yes in the show, whether it's a
happily ever happily ever after, or it's an inspiration or
it's like a confidence.

Speaker 5 (17:40):
So interesting I still remember.

Speaker 1 (17:42):
And so when we first won on the show, we'd
gotten like a little opening packet and there was a
letter from Claire and Bennett and you know, I read
through this thing and I read through it. At the
end too, I was like, oh my gosh, you know,
this is this is so insightful. And I remember they
wrote you will get out of this experience which you

(18:03):
put into the experience, And it was when I've read
at the beginning didn't really.

Speaker 5 (18:10):
Have any impact on me at the time.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
At the end I read it and I said, I said,
oh my gosh, I'm so glad because I did. I
got out of it because I put everything I had
into it. By the end, I just opened myself up
and I just let my emotions just run. And so
I just found that, you know, very insightful. As I
went back and reread it a second time, and I

(18:34):
even went up to him, I said, you, guys, I said,
this is this is beautifully written in their life and
don't give us too much credit.

Speaker 5 (18:41):
Card.

Speaker 4 (18:43):
Well, thank you for joining us.

Speaker 5 (18:44):
Man.

Speaker 2 (18:44):
It's really great to get to meet you and great
to have you on the show. And I liked, you know,
at the top of the show, a lot of people,
well no one would have seen this obviously, but Gary,
you and Gary hanging out. Gary's like, is this where
we go? You know, he's like looking out for you.
And you know, I love the friendships that come from
so like.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
That to incredible friendships for life and I know you
guys probably had the same thing. And you know, and
you get closer to closer some individus more than the others,
just you know, because there's a bond. And like Gary
and I, it was quite interesting. We met waiting to go,
you know, waiting in the outside the limousines, waiting to
meet Joan and I met him there and we bonded immediately.

Speaker 5 (19:24):
Yeah, and have just it's.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
It's you know, he's my brother from another mother.

Speaker 5 (19:31):
You know.

Speaker 4 (19:31):
So it sounds like you want on so many levels.

Speaker 5 (19:34):
Thanks you so much. Welcome, we'll see if you can.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
Welcome the weekend. Welcome to the week I'm so ready,
I am so ready.

Speaker 4 (19:41):
Well, thank you man, thanks for joining us.

Speaker 3 (19:43):
We appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
Thanks for being almost famous to O G's and good
luck tomorrow with your new clubs.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
I'm looking forward to it.

Speaker 5 (19:49):
We'll see what happens. I guarantee you'll still beat me.
