Speaker 1 (00:03):
Ready.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
There's a famous quote that says, in order to get
something that you've never had, you got to do something
that you've never done.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
You will to prove you have to don't freak about.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
I've been in situations where I freeze when it's paying time.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
I'm toured out.

Speaker 4 (00:26):
I hope that this course will allow me to be
the old carry.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
You have to be hungry, you have to be tough,
and you must never give up.

Speaker 4 (00:36):
The devil on my shoulder is going, you can't do this.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
You're not meant to be here to go home.

Speaker 4 (00:41):
I'm just trying to believe in the angel that's telling
me you can do it.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
This is the almost famous podcast with iHeartRadio.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Almost famous the Ogs Bob and Trista with breaking news.
This is crazy, absolutely crazy. I just watched My Lions
whoop up and go to nine to one nine on one.
I'm getting ready for bed, and all of a sudden,
all of a sudden, my phone's blowing up about late
breaking news starring yours truly, Trista Sutter Nay Wren Trista.

(01:16):
This is insanity, honestly, Okay, So let's set the stage here. Trista,
obviously former professional Dancer, the fairy Godmother the Bachelor franchise.
Trista comes along shocking me all the time, constantly surprising me.
This one, I would say, is probably the biggest of
the surprises. May I just come out and say it?

(01:39):
You were Special Forces Fox? I mean, I don't know.
Is that is that the official name?

Speaker 3 (01:48):
What is it? What is the official name?

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Special Forces? World's Toughest Test is what it's called. And
it's season three. I am following in the footsteps of
Hannah Brown, who was on the first season. This is
Bachelor Nation people obviously who won, and.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Then she.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
Won the first season with another woman she's a soccer player.
And then Tyler and uh yeah, duh. I was like,
come to me, brain. Tyler and Nick were on the
second season from Bachelor they won. So I have very
big shoes to fill. But I am on the next

(02:29):
season of Special Forces, and I'm joined by fellow Bachelor
Nation alumni Ali Fedotowski or Ali Mono wo Ali Mano.
So yeah, I it was. We can get into it.
But I'm here in l A to do you press
for the show. With most of the contestants, I think

(02:51):
everybody but one person could be here at least from
what I understand. So I'm really excited to see everybody tomorrow.
It's a big day. But of course wanted to give
you the scoop first because you know it's our podcast.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
So well, man, I'll tell you what. The AFOG podcast
just keeps on hitting.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
We keep on bringing the hard hitting news. I love this.
I gotta be honest with you.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
When I saw the concept of this show, I was
always like, Wow, that is that is for some crazy people.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
I don't think I would ever do.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
And it was more along the lines of the fact
that it was just like, you know, having a dude
from a boot camp and my face barking up my tree,
carrying boats through swamps and all sorts of craziness. I'm
sure there's some things you can't tell me, like where
was it filmed and when and all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
But you know, I'm so excited to talk about that.
Oh yeah, good, let's talk about it, because I'm.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
Sure I can say that, yeah, we do this all
the way to the beginning and tell you yes, how
I go, Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 5 (03:53):
Okay.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
So so it's really funny. I actually posted this on
my store the other day and and it makes me
sad that I'm not talking to her right now, just
because she's part of this story. But Ashley, we were
at the Golden Wedding and I don't know if you
saw my story, but we were at the Golden Wedding
and Ryan and I and the kids were standing next

(04:14):
to Ashley and Jared and we were just chatting waiting
to go inside, and she said, have you been asked
to do Special Forces yet? And I said no, I mean,
what are you kidding? And I mean, I don't know

(04:34):
exactly what I said, but it was something on that
to that effect. And she was like, I think you're
going to be the next person from Bachelor Nation to
be asked.

Speaker 5 (04:44):
And I was like, you're crazy. There's no way.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
First of all, they're gonna want me, and second of
all that.

Speaker 5 (04:49):
I would do that. That was a crazy Town show.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
And just it's just it's so up Ryan's alley, right, yea,
oh my gosh, so up Bryan Sally, so not up
my alley at least, you know, I thought until I
got there, No, I'm just kidding. So I I just
kind of, you know, blew it off. I was like,

(05:15):
that's that's so silly. And then This was months before
I even got approached to be on the show. So
I work with Paul DeSisto, and they contacted him and
said they were interested in having me on the show.
And I was He goes, would you do Special Forces?

(05:38):
I probably have the text would you do Special Forces?

Speaker 5 (05:40):
And I said, guess what?

Speaker 4 (05:43):
I said?

Speaker 3 (05:45):
No? But Ryan would?

Speaker 6 (05:48):
It wasn't just that, it was hell, no, God. I
was like, don't you don't you want my husband?

Speaker 3 (06:00):
The wrong ar.

Speaker 4 (06:04):
My next Trista.

Speaker 5 (06:05):
I'm a woman, I'm fifty to fifty one years old.
And anyway, so I told Ryan.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
About it and and Max and my family, and Ryan
was like, why wouldn't you like this would be an
incredible experience for you? And and I'm thinking to myself, oh.

Speaker 6 (06:30):
Oh god, really you think this would.

Speaker 5 (06:36):
Be a good thing?

Speaker 4 (06:37):
And then he did like flip my mind, like he
he just made me really think about it. And so
I wrote Paul back and I said, hold up, let
me think about this. Let me actually like watch a
couple shows really know what I'm getting into. Because I
had seen I think maybe one or two, but I

(06:58):
hadn't really thought.

Speaker 5 (07:00):
About me being on it. You know.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
From that perspective, I was just watching as like a viewer, right,
and do.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
They tell you at this point when they call you,
do they say, and we're also talking to Ali Mano,
and we think the two of you would be a
great team or is there none of that yet?

Speaker 5 (07:15):
Okay, No, that they don't.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
They don't share with you any other cast members until
you get there. Okay, you you're you're not supposed to
know about anybody else. Yeah, so no, I had no
idea who would be doing it and.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
Let's see.

Speaker 4 (07:36):
Uh so Ryan and I talked, talked more watch the shows,
and He's like, I really do think that you should
do this. I think that you you you know. At
this point in time, I was really struggling with what
I'm who I'm going to be when my kids go
off to college, like when we are.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
Empty nesters conversation.

Speaker 4 (07:59):
Yeah, it's crazy, Like I'm a stay at home mom,
stay at home and work mom, I say, but I
pour myself into our kids and that's my that's my
primary job is household manager, stay at home mom, you
know all of that stuff. And I'm like, who am
I going to be?

Speaker 5 (08:18):
Truly? Who am I going to be?

Speaker 4 (08:20):
Who do I want to be when my kids are gone,
and I really was like, you know what, I feel
like this will give me such good perspective on what
I want out of life. Who get back to the
real me, Like, not not that I'm not the real
me with my kids, but get back to who I

(08:41):
am at my core. You know, who trist is, not
just trist as the mom, trist as the wife, Trista
as the friend, whatever.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
Just well, I think there's something to this, like remember,
and obviously I know it's a different stage in life,
but when we talk with Joan from the Golden Bachelorette
and she was like, I feel invisible and I got
to see who I am again, and you know, I
realized this is a much different stage in life than,
of course where Joan is. But I think women, you know,
certainly go through those passages in life because, like you said,

(09:09):
you've been pouring yourself into your kids for the last
eighteen years, and you know, now all of a sudden,
it's going to be one of those things where you know,
who am I?

Speaker 3 (09:18):
Do I have the gumption I used to have? Do
I have the you know? I mean, wow, what a
great way to find out. I'm so excited.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
Well and It's also like a once in a lifetime opportunity.
You know, people, I actually wanted also to go on
the show because Ryan would have loved to be there.
I actually I'm going to talk to the Fox people
tomorrow and put his name in the ring, and I'm
gonna put his name over and over because he would
thrive in this environment. He wanted to be in the

(09:49):
military and just keep COLORLND like that's crazy, you know,
he just it never happened.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
Hey, you already got me secured for an invitation for
the Golden Bachelorette wedding, So just let him know. If
Ryan's in, I'll do it with him and we'll be
roommates again, just like just like when we were both
buying for your love and attention back in the day.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
Oh my gosh, I would love it. So I just
feel like, you know, I kind of wanted to do
it for him. I wanted to make him and my
kids proud of me. I want to show my kids
that you can do anything that you put your mind to,
that you can do hard things and things that aren't

(10:39):
necessarily in the path of who you think you're going
to be, but be open to all opportunities in your
life and don't just say hell no, hell yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
There is there. I mean, obviously it is a reality show.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
I know there's a lot of eyes on it, so
I would imagine it's also I mean, I'm not that
I can tell already that's not the motivator behind you
doing it, but I'm sure there was a decent payday
involved as well. So it's like there's got to be
some of that, you know, circulating like Okay, I could
do this.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
The kids are getting ready to go to college.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
You know, you never know if you're ready for all
that either, And you know, I mean, was that a
motivator at all?

Speaker 4 (11:16):
No, I feel like I just I really wanted to
be part of this opportunity. And you know what, like
I have a very very strong respect for our military. Yeah,
my dad was in the Army, he was in Vietnam.
My grandfather fought in World War Two, he was a pilot.

(11:37):
My father in law was in the Navy. Like I
have people in my life that I have Navy seals
as friends. You know, I know a lot of people
who are in the military and respect them. And all
the people that I don't know who have been in
the military, and I really wanted to learn, just get

(11:57):
a little teeny tiny piece of information, knowledge, wisdom of
what they go through, you know, like I being part
of the show is like, you know, squeezed, like basic
training I think is months and months and months.

Speaker 5 (12:15):
Right, this was ten days, So.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
Yeah, you can ask you this.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
Though, was it the ten physically and mentally hardest days
of your last couple of decades of your life? I mean,
because it looks like, oh, it tests you to your core.
Like when I watch that show, I'm just like I
am a nervous ball of energy watching it because I
feel like I'm going to throw up. I feel like
I'm so stressed out where you feeling that way? Like
I would think it's even getting outfitted for the close

(12:42):
before the whole thing, it would have me ready to
break down in tears.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
I'd be a mess, you know what, Like.

Speaker 5 (12:48):
I before, Yes, I was a mess.

Speaker 4 (12:51):
I listened to podcasts, I read books like I. I
tried to get myself mentally prepared. I talked to my
friend who is a Navy seal. He is like a
not a he's like in charge. I don't know, I
don't know how what his title is or whatever. But
he's he's very well respected in the Navy Navy Seal community,

(13:14):
and I just wanted to say, like, what, what advice
would you give? I did also talk to gosh, you
do like you go through all of these medical like testing,
psychological testing, whatever. And before we started, I talked to

(13:36):
the doctor on staff.

Speaker 5 (13:37):
And he said, he gave me this quote.

Speaker 4 (13:40):
That you want to be Oh gosh, what was it?
Uh naive enough to start and stubborn enough to finish.

Speaker 1 (13:52):
Oh wow, that's awesome, right, And I was.

Speaker 4 (13:57):
Like, I am really stubborn, so I'm really hopeful, but no,
I you know. I I ended up telling Paul obviously
that I wanted to do it, and I did have
to get through some medical some medical drama because I
have had I've had back surgery, I had a fusion,

(14:21):
a lumbar fusion, and at first they weren't going to
clear me after hearing about that because of some of
the activities that you saw in the promo that I
got pushed off of a boat, yeah, into like open water,
and they were I think they were worried that that
would cause issues with my back. But like I talked

(14:44):
to doctors who were you know who had worked with
worked with me on my pain management after my surgery.
I've been great after my fusion. I've been awesome.

Speaker 5 (14:56):
Like I feel.

Speaker 4 (14:59):
I've always said, like I wish I would have done
my surgery sooner, so it been like ten years ago
or whenever, you know, before my surgery, then yeah, I
would have been like, there's no way I can do
this show. But I was like, please just give me
the chance to, like, you know, try it, and if
I feel at any point that the risk is not
worth it, then I will VW, which is voluntarily withdrawal.

(15:23):
And that's the beauty of this show. It's not a
competition show where you are competing against other people. I
mean kind of you are in a way just because
I wanted to be like, you know, as good as
other people and I didn't want to be a burden
and that kind of thing. But it really is truly
an individually challenging show. You're just it's you against you.

Speaker 1 (15:48):
Yeah, that's it, how you come from day one to
day ten. Right, It's like I would imagine that's a
big part of it.

Speaker 5 (15:55):
Yeah, that's it.

Speaker 4 (15:56):
So I really wanted to challenge myself and to get
out of kind of the rut and not that I'm
in a rut, like I'm really happy, we have a
happy life, the kids are great, Ryan's great, like, we're great,
all of that. It wasn't like a rut in terms
of my relationships. It was more of a rut of
like who am I and who am I going to

(16:16):
be when my kids leave? And what do I want
to teach them at this point in my life and
through this opportunity, hopefully go for it about straight.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
Well, let's let's talk a little about that too, Like, so,
you know, you we had some drama earlier in the
year that was kind of stirred up, you know, social
media style, and it was it was really you know,
and I'm starting to connect the dots in my head
right now timeline wise, right, So it was really right
around that time that I'm sure you were either already

(16:47):
out the door or whatever you might have been doing.
Let us know, Like, I mean, I obviously know you
you and and Ryan are fine, but I remember some
people were like speculating like, oh my god, it's the
end of you know, it's the end of Tristan Ryan.
This must be what's going on. And it was based
off of a very heartfelt, very emotionally you know, charged.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
Post from Ryan.

Speaker 1 (17:09):
He was like, I love you so much and I
just I don't know what to do without you here
right now. It's like, you know, and so people were like,
what the hell's going on?

Speaker 3 (17:16):
You know? Yeah, so tell us a little bit about that.

Speaker 4 (17:19):
So he posted I went back to it on May seventeenth,
and I was filming. I was filming then, so I
can't see this post when it came through. I was like,
they take your phones away. You know, you're you're invested
in the show. You know you're you're there to filmah
and to you know, do what they need you to do.

Speaker 5 (17:38):
You're not on your phone, so.

Speaker 4 (17:41):
You know, part of it was he started with I
really wish I could talk to you, ask you how
you're doing, how was your day.

Speaker 5 (17:47):
I'd really like to hear your voice just for a minute.

Speaker 4 (17:50):
So many times I've called without much to say, not
realizing how lucky I was or how much I'd missed
the opportunity if you were gone. I want you to
I want to know how you're doing. I want to
support and encourage and cheer you want, and I want
to be there for you. But I can't, and that's
okay because I know you need this time time to
discover yourself again. So I'll be here for you instead.
I'll be here for you when you get back. I'll
be here to listen to you, to smile with you,

(18:10):
maybe cry with you. I'll be here to love you.
I'll be here forever.

Speaker 1 (18:14):
Even the dude's Instagram poster, it's just like when we're
on the show together. It's like Edgar Allan Poe wrote that, like,
I mean, what the hell is It's like poetry, you
know what I mean?

Speaker 3 (18:23):
This guy, I mean, he blows my mind all the time.
But yeah, that is a gorgeous test and I you know.

Speaker 4 (18:31):
He's a great writer, but you know that gives so
much perspective, right, Like you know now that you know
why he was writing it, it makes total sense. And

(18:52):
he wasn't trying to be dramatic. He was literally just
like I've always said this, screaming it from the rooftops.

Speaker 5 (18:58):
Like we have this.

Speaker 4 (19:00):
Opportunity to like share with people while we're sharing it
with the world, you know, share with each other, while
we're sharing it with the world, what we're feeling with
social media, and that's all he was doing, and it
caused this humongous uproar. I just posted again and said.

Speaker 3 (19:19):
Holy crap.

Speaker 4 (19:20):
Like everyone thought I was either having a nervous breakdown
that we were getting a divorce or trial separation.

Speaker 5 (19:26):
I was dead. What were the other things? I don't know,
but everyone was lost.

Speaker 3 (19:31):
It was a lot. I remember going, oh my god.

Speaker 1 (19:33):
And then I remember you and I talking when you
first got back, kind of touching on it, and we
even talked about it on the podcast, and I remember,
you know, I don't know what it was, but I
even felt like.

Speaker 3 (19:45):
I needed to.

Speaker 1 (19:46):
Say something, so I think I said something like, well,
I knew you were going to be you know, I'm
meant unavailable for a podcast for one week or something.
I forget what I said, and even then I was like, oh,
oh no, I just get her in trouble by saying
that I knew that she was going to be gone.
You know, I remember feeling like there was I knew
there was something going on, you know, just from what.

Speaker 4 (20:04):
Else I couldn't do anything. Yeah, yeah, So and I
think I know we talked about it on a podcast,
so I don't know if you guys can pull it up,
but or like see what we said. But essentially I
remember saying, yeah, we're good, everything's good.

Speaker 5 (20:20):
I just I just was out of pocket, you know.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
Yeah, you were really good. See I'm really bad at that.
I'd be like I was out of pocket for a
special thing that was forcefully my decisions.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
Of course, the worst.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
I can't keep anything to myself and I you know,
let's just say, I feel like Chuck Norris.

Speaker 2 (20:45):
You know.

Speaker 1 (20:47):
Yeah, I don't even know what I would have said,
but I'm sure I'm sure the whole world would have
figured it out about thirty seconds.

Speaker 3 (20:51):
If I would have done the damn thing. I'm so
proud of you. What a what a huge undertaking.

Speaker 1 (20:58):
And I mean, and to a certain degree, I guess
what a what a daring and and very you know,
knowing how much you respect the military as do. I mean,
my father was a marine and I and I would
I would love.

Speaker 3 (21:11):
To go through something like that.

Speaker 1 (21:12):
But part of me is like almost afraid now because
of the fact that all the Bachelor Nation folks keep
winning it. I'd probably be the one that would show
up and yeah, just like when they asked me to
be the Bachelor, make I probably shouldn't because it shows
going to get canceled.

Speaker 3 (21:23):
Well you know that, I know.

Speaker 4 (21:25):
But yeah, pressure, the pressure, a lot of pressure. Yeah, yeah,
there was a lot there was, although there wasn't really pressure,
you know what. I feel like it's similar to when
people talk about the pressure of staying together if you're
from the Bachelor.

Speaker 5 (21:41):
And you've been successful.

Speaker 4 (21:42):
I'm like, really, no, there's no pressure, Like, yeah, these
people were on the show prior to me and Ali
doing it, but it was my it was my pass
my you know, it was me against me.

Speaker 1 (21:57):
So so with you being partnered up, and sure we'll
we'll talk with her eventually as well about her experience,
but with them, with the two you partnering up, did
you find that you had more in common?

Speaker 3 (22:08):
Cause, I mean we've we've kind of you know. I
remember when we did our shoot many.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
Years ago together and it was like, you know, the
Bachelor and Bestrette Favorites or whatever it was Andrew Firestone,
myself and you and Ali and I can't remember Emily,
And it was awesome. Yeah and Andrew Firestone of course,
and and we had such a great day that day.
But I but I don't really see Ali ever, you know,
And so I was I was curious did you did

(22:34):
you guys have like this opportunity to reconnect and like,
is it?

Speaker 2 (22:38):
You know it?

Speaker 1 (22:39):
Was it one of those experiences where you found out
you have way more in common than just having on
a TV show together.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
You have the same grit and the same paint life.
I mean, I'm just so curious right now.

Speaker 4 (22:48):
I mean honestly, like, you think that you're gonna be
with these people like all the time, right you are,
But you're really like when you're in doing a like
a challenge or a task or you know, a drill,
whatever you want to call it, you're not really like bonding.

Speaker 5 (23:11):
You're not like.

Speaker 4 (23:13):
Chatting about like life, right you're talking about you're looking
up at this bridge and saying, holy shit, right, like
you're like what like and all you're talking about is
how to survive that you know, or what are the

(23:35):
tips from the people who have gone before you or whatever.

Speaker 5 (23:38):
So you're not really.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
Talking like in depth unless so you do ride. So
you ride from like task to task, like the first
day we were on that boat where I got pitched
off of the boat and everyone you know was on
the boat, and you do the task that you do

(24:02):
once you get off the boat, you swim and you,
you know whatever. Once you're done with that, you run
to the like jeeps or.

Speaker 5 (24:11):
The transportation vehicles.

Speaker 4 (24:13):
And four of you were in a car, okay, so
or a jeep or whatever, and it's just all random, really,
So who gets to the jeep first, second, third, whatever,
you get in one whatever, It's completely random.

Speaker 5 (24:26):
And those were the moments where.

Speaker 4 (24:29):
You would bond with people because there would be like
you'd be in the car for an hour two hours
with someone and you're in a little tiny, you know,
the back of a jeep and it is like you're
facing each other, you know.

Speaker 5 (24:44):

Ali and I were never in a car together, in
a jeep together, okay, so.

Yeah, the people that I ended up being in the
jeeps with, I there were there are some of my
favorite moments that I'll never forget. Like, I mean, I
was like talking to Golden Tate about like gold and
Jim Newton about pickleball, Like it was.

Speaker 1 (25:15):
The fact that they are both on this show and
they are guys that I actually know personally as well.
I am so oh yeah, I know, Golden, Golden and
I played golf together a bunch.

Cam Newton and I have known each other for a
very long time. Yeah, it's crazy, you love it.
