Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Dirty Rush, The Truth about Sorority Life with
your hosts me.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Gia Judice, Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Kessler.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
Hey guys, and welcome back to another week of Dirty Rush.
I am currently here in Vegas, and I know a
lot of sororities and fraternities come here for fall break,
do formals out here in day parties. This is definitely
the place to have some fun. But sometimes fun comes
with trouble. So I'm excited to be here in Vegas.

(00:34):
The vibes are hi.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Vegas has me thinking about all of the scandals that
come with sorority life. So I'm going to tell you
of my little story. I think it's more risky than scandalous.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
I don't know. I didn't do anything that's scandalous in
my life.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
And here's some stories from some other people as well.

Speaker 5 (00:52):
Hi Jiung Hi, how are you good?

Speaker 4 (00:54):
How are you good?

Speaker 6 (00:55):
Excited to be in Vegas, but it has me thinking
of a crazy easy story. It's not my story, but
I have permission to tell it from my sister, so
we can just jump in. Let's go okay, So essentially,
my sister took a trip to Vegas with her sorority sisters.

(01:16):
They were all having a grand old time running around
the strip, but they weren't twenty one yet, which clearly
is an issue being down here. So they were definitely
testing their limits with the fake IDs. I'm shocked that
they were able to get in anywhere, or.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Do any I mean, honestly, I've heard recently they of
some people you know that are underage getting in with
the fake IDs.

Speaker 5 (01:41):
Yeah, I guess they have a good one.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
If you have a dupe.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
If you have a good one, like if you literally
have somebody else's old license and that person really looks
like you, it's a little more manageable than buying a
fake idea off the black market. But things have definitely,
I think gotten more lenient.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
For sure.

Speaker 6 (01:58):
I think so. And I think that ideas just have
gotten better and better. So anyways, they're running around, testing
their limits with the fake IDs, having a fun time,
and they find themselves at the blackjack tables.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
Oh my god.

Speaker 6 (02:12):
So they start playing and not thinking anything about it,
and my sister's sorority sisters were not doing too well.
They're kind of wanting to opt out, but they're having
fun at the table. They made friends with some people
around there, and all of a sudden, my sister starts
doing really, really well and she has no idea where

(02:33):
this burst of luck came from. But long story short,
she ends up getting up to four thousand dollars of money.
One at the stage hit she hit the jackpot somehow.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
And she was four thousand dollars randomly just getting that
on a random day, especially as a college student. Though
as a nineteen year old, that is like, that's that's iconic.

Speaker 4 (02:57):
Yeah, okay, this is helping me for the rest of
the semester.

Speaker 6 (03:02):
Absolutely, absolutely, So she is on top of the world.
But she gets to a point where she's kind of
scared and she's like, I need to take this money
and like not place my bets any long year. I'm done.
I need to cut it off. So they say goodbye
to everybody at the table. They take her chips to
go cash in, and although her ID worked at the
table to play, her ID was not working when she

(03:25):
was trying to cash out, So this woman behind the
counter is scanning her ID. Her sorority sisters are standing
behind her. They're freaking out. They're so scared, trying to
hold their composure. All of their faces are beat red,
I'm sure, and they are kind of going back and
forth with this woman. She's trying to make calls to

(03:45):
the table to verify that she was at that table,
and she's like, I'm going to get arrested.

Speaker 5 (03:51):
She's terrified.

Speaker 6 (03:52):
Yeah, And by the grace of God, somehow this man
who was at their table walks over and dap her up,
pots her on the back, is like, congratulations, was amazing
win and he saved the day because he was able
to like verify to this woman and he was at
the table.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (04:11):
And so this woman, without her idea even scanning, handed
over the four thousand dollars to my sister and she
was freaking Wow.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
She had a lucky night.

Speaker 5 (04:21):
She had a lucky night.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Sometimes, you know, Vegas can be trouble, but sometimes it
could also be a whole lot of fun.

Speaker 6 (04:28):
And absolutely it always I mean, I mean, it always brings.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
This place to gandle I mean gamble scanned, I said,
I said scandal and gamble at the same time. I
guess this is the place to gamble. So yeah, she
definitely hit the jackpot, and I she pulled it off.

Speaker 6 (04:46):
I know, I feel like it is one of the
more legendary sorority Vegas stories that I've ever heard, So
I wanted to jump into the chair.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Underage, I wouldn't recommend doing this, absolutely.

Speaker 4 (04:58):
Wouldn't do this.

Speaker 5 (05:00):
It was like one in a million.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
When I didn't go anywhere until I was twenty one,
Like I didn't first time I was in Vegas, I
was actually twenty four, So yeah, I didn't, or.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
No, I was twenty three.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
I was twenty three, but didn't go out into the
bars like until I was twenty one. I was just
always so nervous, especially being in the being a public figure.
I did go to clubs in New York though underage
that was always easy, but like you knew to never
go to like Hoboken or down the shore bars in
Jersey with a fake ID, because it was always risky Vegas,

(05:34):
I would never ever have.

Speaker 6 (05:35):
I can't believe she tried. I don't think I would either.

Speaker 4 (05:40):
But I mean, good luck to your sister. That's awesome.

Speaker 6 (05:45):
I know it was a good one.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
Well, thank you so much for telling that story.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
Absolutely, and now I have a little, I guess scandalous story.
Maybe I was just like breaking the rules at a
date party. But we had a date party in New York.
Rutgers didn't really do date parties where we traveled or.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Did anything like that.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
I know some schools would go to Nashville or New
Orleans or even Vegas and go to really cool places.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
We didn't really do that.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
We stayed in the New Jersey or New York area
was the furthest we went. But we had a date
party in New York City and I wanted to go
out after so a couple of my friends and I
decided to ditch the party bus on the way home
back to Rutgers, and that wasn't allowed. But no one
ever snitched on me, so I never got in trouble.

(06:32):
We partied at the club till like four am and
went back to Rutgers, but I never got in trouble
for it.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
But usually you are.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
Not allowed to do that because they obviously are accountable
for you and it's a liability issue and stuff like that.
But I ended up finessing. No one snitched, Thank you
Zada sisters, And yeah, that was my scandalous story. Though
I guess I was just being a little risky that night.
I just I never really did anything that bad. It
was never really liked bad kid.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
You had Vegas energy that night. Yeah, I had Vegas
energy that night. I had Vegas energy for sure. So
just wanted to be out all night. And yeah that
was fun. And now we're on with Stacy. She has

(07:32):
a scandalous story from sorority college life.

Speaker 7 (07:37):
Hi Jia, Hi.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
Stacy, how are you good? How are you good?

Speaker 8 (07:42):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (07:42):
I'm in Vegas right now, so I think your story
pertains to Vegas.

Speaker 7 (07:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (07:47):
I could see a lot of people in Vegas acting
the way this fraternity boy did in my incident.

Speaker 4 (07:54):
Oh wow, okay, I'm excited to hear it. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (07:58):
It's been like, oh gosh, how many years is like
seven years or so since I graduated college and I
was really involved in my sorority.

Speaker 7 (08:06):
I was social chair. And I don't know about where you.

Speaker 8 (08:09):
Went to school, but social chair usually like plans all
the formals and date dashes.

Speaker 4 (08:13):
Yeah I did. I was special chair of events.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
So oh yeah, so some of like certain things, yeah exactly.

Speaker 7 (08:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (08:20):
So we had a formal like in December before we
went on a winter break, and I'm checking people in
and if people were too drunk their date or themselves,
like my sorority sisters the security guard would tell me,
and I was supposed to be the one to say, like, sorry.

Speaker 7 (08:35):
You can't come to the form right. Was that the
same for you.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Too, basically, like if you were like blacked out, like
you couldn't write right.

Speaker 7 (08:45):
So I was checking everyone in and one of my.

Speaker 8 (08:48):
Sorority sisters, who I was actually really friendly with, had
her crazy boyfriend who was in another fraternity on campus,
and the security guard and I fully look at each
other because.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
He was very drunk.

Speaker 8 (09:01):
So it was very clear that it would be a
liability if he went to the formal, so I had
to be the one to tell him, I'm sorry, you
guys can't come, and they obviously freaked out but walked away.

Speaker 7 (09:11):
So I thought that's the end of it. So we
go on the party bus.

Speaker 8 (09:17):
Everything was perfect, and then I get back to the
sorority and get off.

Speaker 7 (09:22):
The party bus and the house.

Speaker 8 (09:25):
Mom of my sorority and the president were like, Hi, Stacy,
we need to show you something, and I was like,
oh gosh, what happened? And I walk over to my
car in the parking lot because I drove to the sorority.

Speaker 7 (09:36):
I didn't live in a sorty, but I had to
like unload things for.

Speaker 8 (09:38):
The party and whatnot, and the fraternity boy basically took
a soroc bottle to my entire windshield and glass from
the front of my car and stomped on my car
and just completely keyed the side of it, just totally
ruined it.

Speaker 7 (09:57):
Because I didn't let him in, yes, and.

Speaker 8 (10:00):
I didn't know who it was right away, so I
was like bowing crying.

Speaker 7 (10:03):
I'm like, are you kidding me? That they knew? It
was like someone on campus?

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Okay, that's just like so od And it wasn't even
his date party, like it was your sororities Like I
would get it. I understand if he was maybe so
mad that he couldn't get into his own date party,
but the fact that he did it to you and it.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
Was like it was your sorority date party, like they.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
Could have gone out afterwards to like a bar at
school or like done something else, and especially if they
were dating, like just enjoy your night with your girlfriend
then at that point, or just like go to bed.
The fact that he did that afterwards is insane. Like
I think like mental asylum, Like I don't even think
that that's normal, right, Like you have issues.

Speaker 8 (10:45):
And she ended up getting dropped from a sorority and
he got a dropped from his fraternity because Panaltik found out.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
And it was just like that worth No, I mean,
you completely vandalized and ruined someone's car, like definitely, like.

Speaker 4 (10:59):
Meant institute vibes exactly. He's admitted. I wonder where he's
at now.

Speaker 7 (11:06):
I don't know. He had to pay me back. I'm like,
are you kidding me?

Speaker 4 (11:09):
Like, oh my god, he had to pay you back. Yeah,
I mean I.

Speaker 7 (11:12):
Had to get my car fixed. I wasn't even drivable.

Speaker 4 (11:15):
Oh my god.

Speaker 9 (11:16):
Wow.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
So I'm sure that was a pretty penny too.

Speaker 8 (11:20):
Yeah, And you know, I was starred after that. I
didn't want to be social show anymore. I didn't think
people would act like that.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
I mean, of course, I mean that's just not that's
just not a normal way to act.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
But it's you.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
Know, it's I feel like, especially with guys, they get
a little carried away sometimes when they're drinking and they
get that like macho masculine vibe and just want to
you know, dominate and show their dominance.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
And that was his way of doing it.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
I mean, I thought you were going to go with
this story telling me that they ended up ubering to
the venue of the day party and tried to like
sneak in, but then it really.

Speaker 7 (11:54):
Took a turn that would be better.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
Yeah, I mean I thought they were just going to
like really try to make their way into the state party.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
Wow, that's crazy. I'm so sorry about that.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
But I'm happy, Like I'm happier okay now, And I'm
happy he paid for your car and got kicked out
of his fraternity well deserved.

Speaker 8 (12:15):
Yeah, well deserved. And everyone just completely blacklisted them. So
they did it for themselves. But I will never forget that.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
I would not either.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
That is crazy. Oh, Stacy, Well, I'm so sorry. That
would definitely scar me too. But that is a crazy story.
I wish I had a story like that that I
could tell, but I I don't. But I'm so sorry
that happened to you, Sdacy.

Speaker 8 (12:43):
I'm sure you experienced crazy fraternity boys.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
Yeah, definitely experienced crazy fraternity boys. I mean yeah, I
mean this one guy was dating my best friend and
he was definitely aggressive with her, not the best boyfriend,
And it happened at the frat house.

Speaker 4 (13:08):
And I literally saw red because.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
I kind of went through something similar through one instinct,
like in one time of my life.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
So I literally saw red.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
And I ran up to my friend's ex boyfriend and
literally like punched him in the face.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
And like all of my all of my friends, like all.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
My guy friends in the fraternity were like she had
Like they were like hold.

Speaker 4 (13:34):
And I was like, guys, I'm fine.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
I feel good now, like I did that, like he
can leave, like and then we obviously had to like
call the cops and my friend never spoke to this
man again because I'm like, dude, I literally punched someone.

Speaker 4 (13:48):
For you, Like, You're never speaking to this guy again.

Speaker 7 (13:51):
Your friend wasn't mad at you.

Speaker 4 (13:53):
No, oh my god, no, like she no, she knew
that I did. And they were like on the like
on the cusp of like breaking up, like it was right.

Speaker 3 (14:02):
It was very bad, but but yeah, this was like
the icing on the cake. And that was the worst
encounter I've ever had with a FRAP brother. But like
all of my guy friends in the fraternity were.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
Like, gee, yah, are you are you crazy?

Speaker 3 (14:17):
And I was like, no, I'm not crazy, Like he
just like put his hands on my friend.

Speaker 4 (14:22):
I'm not crazy at all.

Speaker 7 (14:24):
But I'm glad you did that. You have to stand
up for your friends.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
No, yeah, but they were you know, I think no
frap boy would ever mess with me again, No, or
my friends for that matter.

Speaker 7 (14:35):
But whoever listens to this no is not the mess
with you. Oh my gosh. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (14:41):
Well, anyone out there who's a social chair, just be
careful because you never know.

Speaker 4 (14:45):
Yeah, definitely be careful.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
That's crazy, you crazy, You deal with some crazy people, exactly.

Speaker 7 (14:52):
Yeah, drinking doesn't help.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
No, drinking doesn't help. And for some odd reason, I
think it just really esque. It's men's testosterones to another level.

Speaker 8 (15:03):
So right, they have to just act cool in front
of their fraternity brothers and then now.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
And for whatever reason, like violence is always the answer,
whether it's like getting into a fight outside the bar
or like doing something completely out of line and inappropriate.

Speaker 4 (15:22):
Like boys always result.

Speaker 3 (15:24):
To violence when they're drinking. Yeah, most most boys, I
should not say all boys, but most right.

Speaker 8 (15:33):
Right, Yeah, No, people would always head butt in my college,
like like get in fights, like things were just weird.
Not my not my cup, no, not my cup a.

Speaker 4 (15:41):
D No, definitely not.

Speaker 3 (15:43):
Well, Stacey, I'm glad you're okay now, thank you for
sharing your story. And yeah, social chairs. Definitely be careful.
Maybe you have maybe you have security on backup.

Speaker 7 (15:53):
Yeah, yeah, for sure. Well, thank you, Gia, thank you.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
Hi guys, it's Daisy and I have one of my
producers here with me.

Speaker 5 (16:16):
Hi, guys.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
We're so excited and being in Vegas. It kind of
got me thinking back to my first time I came
to Vegas. It was actually for a frat formal with Pike,
and that was the first time I had been there.

Speaker 6 (16:31):
That is crazy.

Speaker 5 (16:32):
How old were you?

Speaker 2 (16:33):
I was nineteen. It was my freshman year, so I
feel like you're still figuring out college. I mean, you
can't even age.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
Yeah, but we were like doing the college thing, so yeah,
we were finding ways to everyone have fake IDs. But
my first time in Vegas, so one of my best
friend Christy, who I talk about pretty often, but we
were freshman roommates. We weren't best friends until moved in,
but anyway, we had a really good friend Joseph, and

(17:05):
like a week before they did their formal, his date
like ditched him, so he didn't have a date and
he was like venting to us about it. Me and
Chrissy were like, well, we'll go with you, but you
have to bring both of us. He was like, I
don't know if I can do that, and so he
reached out to his like fraternity whatever. He was also
a freshman, and they were like, sure, you can bring

(17:25):
them both. So we both went to Vegas and that
was my first time coming here, and we did like
all the things. Where was that movie filmed? What's that casino?
Or not the casino? It's like a hotel they filmed
a movie in. Is it The Hangover?

Speaker 9 (17:42):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (17:42):
Is it The Hangover? Caesar's Palace?

Speaker 2 (17:45):
Yes, okay palace?

Speaker 5 (17:47):
Yeah? And stay the Break That is a crazy place.

Speaker 2 (17:52):
And so Pike like rented out that like area or whatever,
and so we were all in there like hanging out
a lot of people like weren't twenty one, and if
you're twenty one, using in fake in Vegas like it
doesn't really work. So we were just kind of doing
what we could, you know. Yeah. But then one night
we were walking back on the strip and I mean,
you see all this like craziness on the strip, and

(18:15):
this guy comes up to us and he's like, do
you guys want to get in a limo? He's like
a promoter, He says, do you want to get in
this limo to go to this club. Everything is free,
and we were like nineteen, We're like, okay, yeah, let's
do it.

Speaker 5 (18:28):
It's terrifying. You were just no hesitation gone in the car.

Speaker 2 (18:32):
I don't know, that's what I'm saying, Like nineteen year
old me, she was crazy. But so we were with
me and Chrissy, were with Joseph and a couple other
of like the guys, and so we got in this
limo and we're like, okay, this is awesome. There's alcohol
in the limo. The driver's like in a suit. Never
been to Vegas before, thought we were going to this club.

(18:53):
We pull up to the said club and we walk
inside and first of all, all they said we didn't
have to pay anything. Me and Christy could go in,
but the guys had to pay. We walk in and
there's like a wrestling match of people in like a
boxing ring.

Speaker 5 (19:09):
All these men like boxing ring in the middle of
the club.

Speaker 2 (19:12):
Yes, like in these crazy outfits. And then it was
like looking a little strange in their like wasn't giving
club vibes. And then all of a sudden, all these
strippers walk out and we were at a strip club.

Speaker 5 (19:24):
And you had no idea walking in there?

Speaker 2 (19:27):
What did I want?

Speaker 5 (19:28):
You had no idea, no idea.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
When we walked in, it was like the wrestling match going,
so I don't know why that was there. And then
it was strippers. I had never been to a strip
club before. This is unreal bedroom and then we were
like at there and of course it's like a bunch
of nineteen year old guys with us, like they're they're
having the time of their life. Okay, first time in Vegas.

(19:51):
They're at a strip club, like that's that's the high
of their year. And then me and Christy are like, okay,
let's find the bar and get it drink and we
go and it's a no alcohol place, like they don't
have alcohol, and we were like this is something like what,
I don't know. It was just it was like the
craziest thing, though, that.

Speaker 6 (20:11):
Is insanely counterintuitive to not have alcohol. Out of places,
we have a wrestling match, we're on the strip, right,
no alcohol.

Speaker 2 (20:20):
I was like, honestly, it was a great first time
in Vegas because I was like, I was such a
good story and I'm like, okay, that's like that's what
happens in Vegas, you know what. I mean I remember
getting back when we like left and I was like, Okay,
I feel like so gross, I feel so dirty. I
need to go to church.

Speaker 6 (20:39):
It's also like, how do you explain that to someone else?

Speaker 5 (20:43):
Like I feel like they.

Speaker 2 (20:44):
Woult you can't.

Speaker 6 (20:46):
I know, it's nuts. And the fact that that was
your sorority or your first fraternity for that, that was what
woever Yeah too traveled for.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
Yeah, it was my first. So I've been to other
fraternity foremost before that, but that was my first, like
ain one. Yeah, and it was in Vegas. Tons we
were all nineteen.

Speaker 4 (21:07):
What a story. I love it.

Speaker 6 (21:09):
So you're nineteen years old, you're gearing up for Vegas.
How are you getting to Vegas? Did everyone road trip?
Were there are buses? Because I've heard of fraternity formals
that take kids on buses and it's a whole organized thing.

Speaker 5 (21:24):
But was it structured like that?

Speaker 2 (21:26):
So sometimes we had ones like that, but this one wasn't.
It was kind of like everybody like get in a
car and bring your day because it was it was
some like weird break in school or no, it was
Easter weekend, so it was like a weird break. So people, Yeah,
we were at the strip club Saturday night on Sunday
the next day.

Speaker 5 (21:45):
Awesome, awesome.

Speaker 6 (21:46):
That is so wild.

Speaker 5 (21:48):
And so when people go on.

Speaker 6 (21:50):
These trips, yeah, like I know, if you're in the
sorority house, you have like how small like where how small?

Speaker 5 (21:56):
Is there any supervisious?

Speaker 2 (21:58):
So I think sororities, like am I experience, they're a
lot more like I don't know what the word is,
like careful or like they have like you have like risk,
like management or whatever. So it's like some people are
like sober the whole time and making sure everyone's like okay.
But I feel like frats from my experience, are more
of like a free for all and it's just like

(22:19):
like we were just like you're just having the timing
of your life and you're nineteen years old. Yeah, I
mean there's upperclassmen, but like how old are they? Like
twenty two?

Speaker 9 (22:28):
Yeah, I mean.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
Like you're an adult, but like you're not, you know
what I mean?

Speaker 4 (22:33):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (22:34):
That is so wild. Yeah, And how many people do
you think went on this trip?

Speaker 2 (22:38):
I think there's probably like one twenty And then they
all bring a date. Yeah, and then they all bring
a date that's in our days case, he brought two dates.

Speaker 6 (22:45):
Yeah, so who knows how many people snuck onto this trip?

Speaker 5 (22:49):
Yeah, I love it.

Speaker 6 (22:50):
So post all of this happening. Yes, but did we
ever see this promoter again? How did we get home?

Speaker 2 (22:56):
Like, so I believe we just took we took uber home, okay,
and then but no, we never saw the promoter again.

Speaker 6 (23:04):
Sad, I feel like you deserved to thank you know.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
For something literally. And then it was funny though, because
so all of like the upper classmen, they're like twenty one,
so they were all like at the actual like club,
but we can get into the actual club. So we
were at a strip club, I guess, but I remember
the next day they were like all like jerried about

(23:28):
their nights, like, well we ended up at the strip club,
and all the upper classmen were like wait.

Speaker 6 (23:33):
What I bet because they probably thought they had the
craziest night. Yeah, able to get into all the places. Yeah,
you're like a story for you.

Speaker 2 (23:43):
Yeah, we were like, no, the freshmen had the craziest night.

Speaker 6 (23:45):
Yeah. So while you're at the strip club, yeah, people
taking out singles, Like what was going on? How was
everybody reacting to being in this environment?

Speaker 2 (23:55):
I mean yeah, all the guys were like throwing money
for sure.

Speaker 4 (23:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (23:59):
I was kind of like and I was like, what
is happening? It was like almost like like you don't
like you're like, is this real life?

Speaker 5 (24:05):
Yeah, it actually happening.

Speaker 2 (24:09):
It's also like I'm nineteen years old from the middle
of nowhere, Minnesota, like a town of like under two
thousand people, Like this is absurd to me, Like this
is nothing I've ever seen before.

Speaker 6 (24:21):
Yeah, and how was that drive back to San Diego?

Speaker 5 (24:24):
Brutal?

Speaker 2 (24:25):
I'm sure brutal and kind of like questioning, like what
I just everything I just experienced. Okay, guys, we have

(24:48):
a caller that just called in. Her name is Lauren Hi.
Lauren Hi, Hi, How are you good? How are you
doing great?

Speaker 9 (24:56):
Thanks?

Speaker 2 (24:57):
Thanks for coming on Dirty Rush. So I heard that
you have a crazy story about Vegas.

Speaker 9 (25:04):
Yeah. So when I was in college, we had something
called an airport party, which I had never heard of
before getting to college. And I don't know how many
hurders stay there around for So this is probably nineteen
ninety three, and I went to cal in Berkeley.

Speaker 2 (25:24):
Oh, fun.

Speaker 9 (25:25):
So what it consisted of? You went to a fraternity
Actually it started with I went with my best friend's
brother who was a good friend of mine, and he
showed up at my sorority. He brought me a chia pet,
which was a unique gift, I guess, instead of flowers,
and picked me up and then we went back to

(25:48):
his fraternity, had a bunch of cocktails for an hour
or so, and then we went hopped on a bus
and drove to the Oakland Airport and everyone got off
the bus and it was you know, pre nine eleven,
so very little security. We went straight into the terminal

(26:11):
and they drew a name out of a hat and
that person was going to win a trip to Vegas.
And I did not pack a bag. I had no
intention of going going to I had my formal the
next night, and I had a boyfriend that I was going,

(26:34):
you know with to my formal, So wasn't planning on going. Yeah,
I guess all of the cocktails and a lot of coaxing,
we decided we were going to go. So someone gave
me like their hair brush, and I don't know what
else they had in their bag.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
You're like, who has something I can take with me
to Vegas? Because I'm like.

Speaker 9 (26:55):
Okay, so I'm gonna have a hair brush and that's it.
I have no clothes, nothing, and so we left everyone.
I don't know where the rest of the party went,
but we boarded the flight. It was a Southwest flight
and in those days they had the phones on the
back of the airplane seats. And my Day and I

(27:19):
our parents grew up together. They went to cal together,
really good friends in each other's weddings, and so we
decided to call our parents. I think it was probably
like eleven thirty, I'm sure we woke them both up
and said, you know, we're going to Vegas. We won
this trip, and they didn't quite grasp what we were doing,
but they just you two, just the two of us.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
Yeah, what did your boyfriend think of that?

Speaker 9 (27:44):
Well, he was not that happy. I mean, I don't
think he was like threatened that I was going with
my friend, but I think he was like, you're going
to be super hungover for your formal that I'm coming
out for. He was out of college and older, so yeah,
I mean, he wasn't thrilled, but whatever, it was fine

(28:05):
and we you know, fly there, get off the plane.
By this point it was like seemed like maybe a
good idea. And then by the time we got there,
we were both like super tired and wondering why we
agreed to this. But we go to the fancy Luxor Hotel,

(28:26):
which I'm not sure if that's even still there anymore,
but it was like that weird pyramid hotel in Vegas.

Speaker 2 (28:31):
Oh okay, I know what you're talking about.

Speaker 5 (28:33):
Yeah, And.

Speaker 9 (28:35):
He went up to the check in and said that
it was our honeymoon and that we needed to be
upgraded to the honeymoon's suite, and he just kept going
back and forth with them. They're like, no, no, no,
that's not what it was booked for. And he just
kept saying, well, we're going to have a baby tonight.
We're going to conceive a baby, and it needs to

(28:56):
be in the honeymoon suite. And I'm like, oh my god,
I just want to go to bed. So anyway, they
gave us the honeymoons we which at the Luxor is
nothing fancy, and it reeked of smoke, and we just
went to bed. Like by that point, I don't even
think we gambled. If we did, I don't remember us

(29:16):
to sleep, Yeah, just like fly all the way there
and go to sleep. We woke up super early. We
reeked of smoke. I was in my clothes from the
night before, and we just decided that we were ready
to go home. So we literally probably got there at
one in the morning, and I think we were on

(29:39):
like a seven am flight, right, And so that's hilarious.
I think all that came out of it was a
good story.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
Yeah, how are you for your formal?

Speaker 9 (29:49):
Then I was hungover, but my boyfriend did come and
he didn't get me a chia pet, so that was
kind of a bummer. I was really hoping for two
in one weekend, and yeah, that was kind of it.
Like it was super you know, fun story. I don't
know that if like I felt great when I was
doing it, but it was fun.

Speaker 2 (30:11):
It's like one of those things where you're like, oh,
this is so awesome. I'm like this is great, and
then you get there and you're like, wait.

Speaker 9 (30:17):
Yeah, why am I here? Why am I here? But yeah,
I mean I guess if thirty years later I can
tell the story and it's a little fits my daughter
hearing it, then I guess it was worth it.

Speaker 2 (30:28):
It's crazy to think about like airports, like back then
you could just like walk in yeah, and like you
fully just had like a full like fraternity party in
the airport.

Speaker 9 (30:39):
Yeah, and I think you could just go up to
the ticket counter and just buy a ticket right then
and there, or I don't know if they had already
bought tickets and then they just put our names on them.
Oh okay, because they didn't know until they drew the
name who was going.

Speaker 2 (30:56):
That is crazy.

Speaker 9 (30:57):
Oh, we were the lucky winners.

Speaker 2 (30:59):
I wonder they still do that.

Speaker 9 (31:01):
I don't think so. I don't think so. I've never
heard of anyone, and actually i've had I asked a
couple of people today who went to cal who are
a little bit older. I'm like, did you guys ever
go to an airport party? And they're like, I have
no idea what you're talking about.

Speaker 2 (31:15):
Honestly, someone should bring that back. But you just draw
the name at the fraternity and then that person in
their date. I have to send it to Vegas like
twenty four hours.

Speaker 9 (31:25):
I think it'd be great. So do you even do
you know what a chia pet is? Have you heard
of them? No?

Speaker 2 (31:30):
I don't even train like a stuffed animal, like a
weird stuffed animal.

Speaker 9 (31:34):
No, it's actually I think it was like made of
clay and they came in different shapes. I think this
was like I don't know, maybe a cow or a pig,
and then you watered it.

Speaker 2 (31:48):
Oh my gosh, green grass or grows out of it. Okay,
now I know what you're talking about.

Speaker 5 (31:55):
That, sir.

Speaker 9 (31:57):
I bet you they still sell them. I don't think
think it was a common thing that they gave people for,
you know, us date gifts. But I do think you
could probably find one. It's like a mister potato head
kind of you know, like, yeah, it's timeless.

Speaker 2 (32:11):
Well did your chia pet? Did it grow? It's grass hair?

Speaker 9 (32:15):
I think it grew. I don't know how long I
kept it. I feel like my room was really small
and it was going to take up some much needed space.

Speaker 2 (32:23):
I love that. Well, that is a great Vegus story.

Speaker 9 (32:27):
Thank you, You're welcome.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
