Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast
with iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
It's the Almost Famous podcast and it's producer Heather jumping
in with the number three most shocking moment in Bachelor
Nation for twenty twenty five. This moment was a viral sensation,
It was all over the Internet and was a situation
about secrets and betrayal. The number three most shocking moment
(00:27):
this year was The Danish Deception. Anyika was on Colton
season of The Bachelor back in twenty nineteen and that's
where we first met her, But this year she went
viral in November twenty twenty five when she started to
share her story in what she titled The Danish Deception
(00:47):
on TikTok. It was very much in the same vein
as Resa Tisa's viral TikTok story Who the F Did
I Marry? That came out a year earlier. Through her
twenty five part saga Onnyeka details how she fell in
love with a Danish man while vacationing in Croatia. It
becomes kind of a whirlwind romance. Everything is very fast
(01:11):
and kind of early on, there are some signs that
maybe she should have looked into but this man tells
her he's from royal lineage, and she hears him tell
someone he's a former Olympic athlete in handball. Now, she
never really looks into any of these things and kind
(01:32):
of just takes them for face value. I think she
ends up regretting that, But yeah, I think most people
would do a quick Google search and kind of look
into those things, but alas she did not. There were
so many shocking twists in this story, but one early
on is a dinner date that they have on Yaika
(01:53):
ends up falling, hitting her head and having seizures. And
this is all within very early stages of them getting
to know each other. But it's in this scary moment
that he tells her he loves her for the first
time because she's already told him she loves him. And
this is probably a big moment for them as a
(02:16):
couple because she's really building trust. Even weirder, we're not
going to get into it, but like, why is she
having seizures? She's never had seizures before. This whole moment
in the story was very scary and crazy to listen
back to. But not long after this experience is when
money starts to come into this conversation. He starts saying
(02:38):
he needs money, but when she offers, he won't accept.
But eventually he gives into her loaning him six thousand
dollars and he says this will be the last time.
Spoiler it's not. Throughout the multi part TikTok series, Anyeka
shares that the asks for money become more and more
(02:59):
free went but to her they always seem legit. So
he claims to her that he owns apartment complex and
other places back in Denmark, and he'll say, like, something
broke at the apartment complex he owns, and he can't
fix it because his assets are tied up in something else.
(03:19):
And you know, Anyika has a background in real estate,
but obviously real estate laws are different dependent on the country,
so she takes a lot of what he says at
face value, and especially in these early stages of their relationships,
she doesn't push back and she doesn't look into these things.
(03:41):
So you know, she's just very trusting in what he's
saying because to her, they're in love. You know, why
would he have any reason to lie to her about
something like this, you know, and plus she thinks that
he is very successful in what he does, because early
on in their relationship, she meets him in Monaco and
(04:03):
they go to a networking event and she meets a
lot of people that you know, have worked with him
and like him, and Monaco is extremely expensive and he's
paying for everything and they're going out and doing nice things.
So she has no reason early on to believe that
he's anything other than successful at what he does. So
(04:25):
she of course just thinks, you know, like he said,
he's got assets tied up in something else. This is
a quick loan. She's going to lend it to him,
and everything's going to be good. But another bomb kind
of gets dropped in this series from Anyeika is that
they weren't just engaged to be married like she would
(04:47):
have a lot of her followers believed online because that's
all she had kind of publicly posted they were actually married.
So that was pretty shocking because again her followers only
believed she had been engaged. They ended up having a
courthouse wedding in the United States and basically didn't tell anyone.
(05:08):
So Anyika is from a very traditional Nigerian family and
they hadn't even met him or anything. This man, his
name is Martin she does not refer to him by
his name throughout the entire TikTok series, but because they
had been a very public couple and shared a lot
(05:30):
of tiktoks and been on social media together, you know,
everybody knows that his name is Martin, or at least
that's what he said his name was when they were together.
So her family did not know she and Martin were
married because of their traditional values, but she wanted to
(05:52):
have them get married so that they could start the
immigration process with him. So they have this courthouse wedding
with the intention that they will someday have this big
wedding and everybody will be involved, and she'll have a
traditional Nigerian wedding, and she'll also have a traditional kind
of what they call a white dress wedding, which is
(06:13):
the more americanized wedding. So that's the plan. But even
after they get married, the money requests don't stop, and
not long after they marry, the IRS calls Martin and
says he owes three hundred and eighteen thousand in taxes.
He also says that his dad owes like millions, which shocking. Again,
(06:37):
this is kind of where you would think some alarm
bells are going off right. Anyeka already is under the
impression that he's of royal lineage. Why you know, if
he's in royal lineage, is he needing you know, help
from his wife to loan money and his dad won't
loan him the money. It's all very fishy. But you know,
(06:59):
as an outsider listening to this, this is when I
would say most people's antennas would start to go up,
but on Yaka's does not. So there's a lot of
chatter at this time about you know, his assets are
(07:22):
being frozen, and still on Yaka loans him money because
now at this point he is her husband and she's
in love and very much invested in him and their future.
So it's around this time that they go back to
Denmark for the holidays and another bomb gets dropped on
(07:42):
Jaka by one of her husband's friends. And it's this
friend who reveals to her that her husband, Martin, has
had a gambling addiction in the past and has had
some enemies, the people that he owed a lot of
money too. And this is the moment where alarm bells
(08:04):
start to really go off for on Yika. Her friend
at around this time hires a private investigator. They do
a check on her husband and this is when they
find out that the Olympic athlete claims of royal lineage.
They're a lie, but he has no criminal background, so
there is a little bit of relief there After this,
(08:26):
they kind of get on a good path on Yaka says,
he starts to go to gamblers support groups. They start
to plan their wedding. Yeah, not gonna lie. Planning the
wedding seems like a really strange decision to be making,
you know, one when he's not been repaying like money
(08:46):
that he owes. You've he's got assets tied up overseas,
so he says his assets are frozen by the IRS.
It would not be the time that I think you
start planning your wedding. So yeah, very strange decision. I still,
after watching this multi series part don't really understand why
she did that, other than I think that maybe she
(09:09):
was obviously excited. You know, at this point they had
had a very public engagement. He'd given her a really
nice ring, and her family, very traditional Nigerian, had welcomed
him in with open arms and really enjoyed getting to
know him at this point, so I think it was
(09:30):
just probably, my guess, would be a lot of excitement.
Every young woman dreams about getting married, and I'm sure
this was no different for her, So I think she
was probably just swept up in this whole fantasy, even
though behind the scenes she knew that there were a
lot of struggles that they were going through. But again,
(09:52):
not long into this planning, Anyaka catches him lying when
she sees him looking at gambling sites on his phone.
But I mean there's a lot of back and forth
about this, obviously, this is a twenty five part series
that I'm condensing. Eventually, in another shocking moment, he is
the one who calls off the wedding. I think this
(10:14):
was pretty crazy. I remember watching this whole series over
the course of a couple of days, and I remember thinking,
that's not what I thought was gonna happen. I really
thought on Yaka was gonna wake up at some moment
and be like, I'm better than this, I deserve better
than this, and she was going to leave him. So
I was pretty shocked when I got to the part
(10:35):
where he actually leaves her. He calls off the wedding.
I mean, he does it because she's confronting him about
money and gambling and these kinds of things, but it
was kind of shocking to know that he actually was
the one who leaves her and on Yaka finally at
this point, has to not only tell her friends and
(10:57):
family that they're breaking up up, but she's also kind
of got to reveal to them that they were already married.
So this is now more complicated, and she's obviously very
scared that her you know, traditional family is going to
be very upset with her, but you know, they are
there for her, their supportive and they help her get
(11:18):
through this. But you know, there's another shocking twist, of
course in this story, and it's when she starts to
tell her friends and family that you know they are
breaking up, they were actually married. He has a gambling problem.
That's when she finds out that he'd not only been
taking and swindling money from her throughout their entire relationship,
(11:40):
he'd actually been going behind her back and taking and
swindling money under false pretenses from her friends and family,
even from her parents, from her you know, sister is
really really bad and this was very sad to watch
this portion of the story. She an Yaka breaks down
(12:01):
she's extremely sad. Even retelling this. She feels an immense
amount of guilt for bringing this man into their lives.
And of course these friends and family will never get
their money back, so that is extremely sad. He often
lied to them and a Yaka's words would say things like,
(12:23):
you know, I want to buy Anyaka this purse for
her birthday. It's a surprise. Don't tell her, but my
money is tied up overseas and my properties. Can you
loan me the money so I can get it. At
one point, he was saying he was going to buy
her a sports car of some sense and like to
not tell her. He said he was going to be
buying property like land for them, a way for them
(12:46):
to start their married life, so not to tell her.
And you know, all of her friends and family believed
him at face value and did not tell her what
was happening behind her back. Eventually, through this, an Yaka
find support and you know, does move forward with the
divorce proceedings. Their divorce was finalized in November of twenty
(13:08):
twenty five, which is why she decided to start her
TikTok series and in another shocking twist, since she has
shared her story and it's gone viral. She has found
that her ex was in too Loom and he was
still swindling women as recent as the week before her
story went viral. So this story is definitely a shocking
(13:31):
story and I suggest if you have time this holiday season,
go back watch the twenty five parts to get a
real full grasp of how much money, how much lying
was going on. It will definitely keep you hooked for
a good amount of time. But that is why the
Danish Deception comes in as our number three most shocking
(13:52):
moment of twenty twenty five.
