Stock futures are down again this morning with President Trump's
sweeping global tariffs in effect. The average tariff is twenty
nine percent, with some as high as forty China is
facing tariffs of around one hundred four percent. At a
news conference today, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry
said the US continues to abuse tariffs to pressure China

and that Beijing will never accept this kind of bullying.
At times, this morning, Dow futures have been down five
hundred points. President Trump isn't backing down. More from Mark Mayfield.

Trump gave the keynote address of the Annual National Republican
Congressional Committee Dinner on Tuesday. Many countries have they've ripped
us off left and right, but now it's our turn

The Trump administration is reportedly freezing nearly two billion dollars
in funding for three major colleges. More from Temmi Treheo.

Two US officials told The New York Times at over
a billion dollars in funding for Cornell University at about
seven hundred and ninety million dollars for Northwestern has been frozen.
The funding was mostly grants and contracts with the Department
of Agriculture, Defense, and other agencies. Both schools have been
accused of racial discrimination because of their efforts to promote diversity.
The administration is also cutting four million dollars in funding

for Princeton University that was to be spent on climate research.

And Flooding in the Tennessee, Ohio and Mississippi river basins
remains a serious threat today after what meteorologists are calling
a one thousand year rain event. I'm Michael Kasner aside
from gathering relevant documents. Tax experts say first time tax
filers should make sure they know the rules and obey them.
Sarah Lee Kessler reports.

Tax experts say, if you're a first time tax filer,
make sure you'll obey the rules because pleading ignorance won't
cut it with the IRS. Or A Nadler, a certified
public accountant in Fairlawn, New Jersey, says forget about trying
to game the system, because the IRS will find out.

documents are also sent to the government and they make
sure that your information is reported properly. So it's very
important to be compliant, but to also use the tax
code to minimize your taxes.

Adler also says first time filers should make sure to
take all the deductions they're entitled to take.

If you're a teacher, there's deductions you can take for
the money you spend for our goods in the classroom
charity that you can deduct. Paying down your student loans,
child tax credits, and earn income tax credits also come
into play.

He also recommends filing electronically and says refund checks are
often issued in less than a week.
