Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is your twenty four to seven use update, the
latest use this hour in just four minutes.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
The April jobs report is better than most analysts we're expecting.
The Labor Department says one hundred and seventy seven thousand
new jobs were added last month. The forecast had been
for somewhere in the neighborhood of just over one hundred
thirty thousand, Senior business correspondent Christine Romans.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
But all of this is kind of a rearview mirror
because there's a whole bunch of stuff happening that's likely
to tweak these numbers. So top line, we're saying jobs
continue to be added, but Tariff questions.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Loom Investi, Pedias, Caleb, Silver.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Companies are still adding workers. And if you look across
the sectors, we're seeing pretty robust hiring in some of
those popular places where we've seen hiring, but not a
lot of layoffs in some of the areas that you
thought might be vulnerable. Now I think that's coming probably
in the next couple of months, maybe not to the
extent that we were worried about. So you still have
a very strong labor force participation rate.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
And while it did beat expectations. The number is still
down from Marches two hundred and twenty eight thousand. President
Trump is shaking up his cabinet. Mike Walsey is out
as National Security Advisor and now nominated to become the
UN ambassador. More from Nick Harper.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
Earlier on Thursday, there was reporting that Mike Waltz had
been fired the National Security Advisor, but loyalist to Trump
had been on shaky ground in recent weeks since he
accidentally added a journalist to a group chat on the
app signal, but this is clearly shunting him aside. The
UN role has remained unfilled since Donald Trump returned to office,

(01:36):
and the President had clearly been souring on his National
Security advisor. That role now goes to Secretary of State
Marco Rubio, who Trump says will be doing both roles
at once.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
The Trump administration is creating a second military zone along
the US southern border. Last month, the Pentagon created a
military zone along the New Mexico border where migrants entering
the US could be detained by troops. On Thursday, the
military's North Command said it was creating a second military
zone in Texas. I'm Michael Cassner. Russell Brand made his

(02:08):
way past reporters without saying a word as he entered
a London court room this morning, charged with rape and
sexual assault. A forty nine year old British actor and
comedian is facing accusations from four women for alleged crimes
that happened between nineteen ninety nine and two thousand and five.
He denies all the allegations. A settlement has been reached
between the City of Chicago and actor Jesse Smollett Lisa

(02:31):
Taylor with Moore.

Speaker 5 (02:32):
The former Empire star was convicted in twenty twenty one
for staging a racist and homophobic attack and then lying
to police. Smollett's conviction was overturned by the Illinois Supreme
Court in November. The City of Chicago filed a civil
lawsuit in twenty nineteen against the actor, claiming they spent
one hundred thirty thousand dollars on overtime during the initial investigation.
A status hearing involving the settlement to set for May

(02:54):
twenty ninth in federal court. I'mly Se Taylor.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Films from Disney and Universal are going to be released
in China despite ongoing trade disputes. More from Tammy Treheo.

Speaker 6 (03:06):
According to reports from Bloomberg, How To Train Your Dragon
and Lilo and Stitch are among the latest Hollywood films
to secure a coveted Chinese exhibition approvals. Marvel's Thunderbolts also
opened in the country on Wednesday. The approvals may signal
that Beijing is keeping the door open for major American
releases despite ongoing US China trade relations. China remains the

(03:27):
world's second largest theatrical market behind the US. I'm Tammy Triheo.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Today is National Space Day bre Tennis with more on
the reason for the day.

Speaker 7 (03:37):
The day recognizes advancements and achievements in space exploration. It
promotes math, science, technology, and engineering, all things required for
people to go to space. Last year, more than eight
thousand people applied for the NASA Astronaut Program. Twelve to
sixteen were selected. And if you go, you might not
be alone. UFOs have been reported by many astronauts while

(03:59):
in space. Vanessa isn't talking.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
I'm Michael Kassner
