Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is rejecting p President Trump's suggestion
that Ukraine give up some territory to make peace with Russia.
Lisa Taylor reports.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Trump announced on Friday he'll be meeting with Russian President
Vladimir Putin next week to discuss a peace deal between
Ukraine and Russia. Andrea Mitchell has more it's going.

Speaker 4 (00:27):
To be the first time Putin will be on American
soil since a UN's speech in twenty fifteen, and it's
notable that after several weeks of criticizing Putin, saying it
is frustrated with the lack of progress in Putin's accepting
a ceasefire with Ukraine, Trump said Putin, I believe wants
to see peace.

Trump indicated the deal might involve swapping territory between the
two nations. In a video address this morning, Zelensky rejected
the idea and said any decisions made without Ukraine are,
at the same time, decisions against peace.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Mexico is pushing back against a report that says the
Pentagon is being directed to use military force against certain
drug cartels. President Claudia Scheinbaum said Friday they are willing
to cooperate and collaborate, but the US military will not
be entering Mexican territory. The New York Times reports President
Trump has ordered the Pentagon to use military force against

cartels designated as foreign terrorist organizations. Trump reportedly signed the
directive in secret, and military officials have started drawing up
plans for targeting the cartels. A storm system is creating
a flood thread in parts of the Upper Mississippi River
Valley this weekend. Here's Monica Nelson.

Rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to impact
the northern plains. The threat of excessive rainfalls expected to
reach northern Minnesota into Iowa, southern Wisconsin, and northern Illinois.

Some thunderstorms may be severe, with heavy winds and tornadoes
possible as well. The NBA is unveiling its opening nights
late for the twenty twenty five twenty six season. ESPN
is reporting the season tips off on Tuesday, October twenty

Texas Democrats are collaborating with Newsom as Republicans aimed to
gain five more seats in their state. Newsom is proposing
to temporarily shift California is redistricting power from an independent
committee over to lawmakers to increase Democratic seats in the
Golden State.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Cruis are slowly gaining ground on a fast moving wildfire
burning north of Los Angeles. The Canyon Fire is now
twenty eight percent contained and has burned nearly fifty four
hundred acres. It started Thursday afternoon near Santa Clarita in
Ventura County and has now spread into La County. All
evacuation orders have been lifted and are now evacuation warnings.

Two other wildfires are also burning in the region, including
the Gifford Fire, which has burned over ninety nine thousand
acres north of Santa Barbara. Astronomers say they've discovered a
distant black hole estimated to be up to three hundred
million times the size of the Sun Brian Shook as More.

A study published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters found the
oldest and most distant black hole at the center of
a galaxy considered to have formed around thirteen point three
billion years ago. The discovery could shed light on the
universe's earliest days and provide insight into how black holes
and galaxies evolved.

The Saint Jude Golf Championship is being played this weekend
in Texas. The first event of the PGA Tours FedEx
Cup Playoffs is being held in Memphis, and only the
top seventy players earned a spot in this week's event. Scotti, Scheffler,
Rory McElroy, and zap Straka are sitting in the top three.
