Speaker 1 (00:08):
What's good?
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Y'all, Welcome to another episode of the three on three Pod.
We are fresh off one of the most hyped up
WNBA draft classes in the league history, and I'm joyed
by our girl, Tarika Foster Brasbey, Karika.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
How we feeling, what's going on?
Speaker 3 (00:28):
What up?
Speaker 4 (00:29):
I'm feeling good. I'm feeling good.
Speaker 5 (00:32):
I have been on cloud nine for like the last
two weeks because all of this women's basketball talk has
just been what I've been dreaming about forever, Like, I
feel useful, I feel needed right, So it's been dope,
and I know my girl Schari feels the same.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
Although Charie's not.
Speaker 5 (00:54):
Gonna be with us for the better part of this podcast,
We're definitely gonna get an opportunity to check in with
her later on for our jump off segment, but she too.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
Busy being booked and busy on assignment and stuff like sis.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
I know, look at her, Hey, hey, look yo, hey,
look though between you ed Cherie Sharik's.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
In the Olympics. You on CBS News. I've tried. I've
tried to get to y'all's level.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
What you mean like on TV.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
Either, Chris, you already starting on the podcast on this foolishness.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
You know what I'm saying. Oh, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
It's one thing the HQ and all that sports network,
but CBS News we're talking about Rokia Jackson.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Come on, now, I'm sweet. Listen.
Speaker 5 (01:36):
I was trying to meet Dan Rather, but you know
how that go, like, and God bless you Dad.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Hey, Yo, you know what's really funny though about this
draft class is how they had a packed house for
the draft, right, And that's not something we normally see
where fans are allowed. And I feel like it's should
be standard practice, standard procedure now that the fans are
(02:05):
in the house, because the atmosphere to rika, Oh my goodness.
Speaker 5 (02:10):
Yeah, well, you know they used to have fans, They
used to let fans in the draft, and then they stop, right,
And so I do like the element of having the
fans come back like that was cool and they sold
out in fifteen minutes.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Come on, hey, these ladies, these ladies are box office
and everybody wants to see them shine and performing. Somebody
who's always shining, We're going to bring on the show
in just a little bit. Is Ice is Young, a
college basketball analyst also WNBA she played at Siena Syracuse
as well.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Shout out of the Qus.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
She also played professional basketball overseas, and she's gonna give
us her perspective, but what she saw from this draft
and really what stood out to her.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
Yeah, you know, I had the pleasure of being with
Ice for the most part of the Final four, so
we got a chance to like really watch these players,
some of these players play in their final moments of
their college career and then moving on to see them
in the w NBA Draft was really cool. Also, here's
(03:15):
a fun fact, Ices is actually my cousin, So it's
kind of dope to be able to be on this
podcast with my cousin.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
It's a family he it's a family reunion out here.
It's a family reunion, Oh my goodness. And a lot
of family showing so much joy in love for their
daughters going on to experience or realize their w NBA
dreams and just a little bit.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Of gear up at all.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
Chris, did you tear up? Did you tear up?
Speaker 5 (03:40):
Because there were a couple that really had me tearing up,
like Camilla Cardoso when she talked about being able to
provide a better life for her family that made me
tear up a little bit. I think anytime Oh Nico
Mule made me tear up too, because majority if her
family was still in Croatia, So that made me tear
(04:04):
up a little bit too, And just kind of seeing
the happiness from the coaches and like the authenticity of
the players, like expressing why they were so excited.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
So I think I teared up a little bit on
a couple of people.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
I did.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
So I was really busy, you know, at CBS doing
my job over there in the studio, so it was
a lot going on, you know, trying to figure out
what scripting write all that, so I didn't get a
chance to really, I guess fully appreciate, you know, some
of those more sentimental moments, maybe after the press conference.
But I will say from what I saw on social
media and reading back or watching back, there are definitely
(04:41):
moments where I was going to get really really heartstrung,
specifically with Camilla and just her story, the fact that
she left Brazil to give her family a better life
and then it pays off all these years later and
they were just at the New York Stock Exchange.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
This is why we love sports.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
Yeah, all right, Chris let's just get into with you.
Let's get into the draft.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Monday's w NBA draft was a site like any other.
From the fits that these ladies were wearing, the families
their teammates showing out, Paige Becker's looking like a proud mom,
Early Edwards, Nika Mule, it was just an incredible show
of all the talent and the work that they put
(05:27):
in really special presentation. And of course the worst kept
seekert was Kaitlyn Clark going number one overall to the
Indiana Fever, right, and then you had Cam Brake going
number two. And I'm not going to run down the
list of all the players who were drafted, but what
I will say is when it comes to surprises and disappointments,
(05:48):
are steals and disappointments.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
I felt like the Aces had a whole lot of steals.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
I'm shocked that these other teams allowed them to get
Liz Kittley right, who's probably gonna have a retcher year
if you will, in the Tutelage fraud In Parker and
Age Wilson, the Asia third all time war and oh,
by the way, Kate Martin who only showed up, who
(06:16):
support Katelyn Clark and then lo and beho they drafter
that that was incredible in terms of disappointments though, and
then I'll get it to Tarika, I'm really interested or
I'm really struggling with the decision making process from the
Atlanta Dream because they drafted three international players and those
(06:42):
are all talented from the film that I've watched over
this past year, but all of them, according to Tanisha Wright,
the head coach, they're still going to be playing overseas
this year.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
So why did.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
That that bothers me? Because I know they have a
nice roster, but it's not a great roster. So I
feel like there were different places that you could have
gone to fulfill and add more depth to your team,
whether it's on the Wii or on the low block
to help out shine Parker. So yeah, those are my two,
I guess steals and disappointments when it comes to the
(07:17):
Aces and the Dream. But Rica, what really, uh, what
really shook you on Monday?
Speaker 5 (07:26):
Well, first and foremost, let me give a shout out
to the d because huh, well, let me tell you
my girl, Rickid Jackson did not come to play with
none of y'all. Do you feelby she came out in
the red had to buck so on with the white.
You did an audience twitch for y'all. Bro I was like,
my dog, you so Detroit. I love it, absolutely love
(07:50):
it on it. I also believe she's the highest player,
highest w NBA player to ever come out of the
city of Detroit, so I'm definitely sureing had love for that.
That's grezy, so there was that. I just wanted to
throw that out there, Detroit, what so biggest steal? I
don't even want to say this is a steal. I
(08:10):
just wanted to say, if I'm picking winners and losers,
Chicago's Sky to me, what you got Cam and Angel
to go along with Izzy Harris and Dana Evans and
Teresa Witherspoon is coaching y'all Chicago about to be There's
no expectation for this Sky team.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
Y'all literally got rid of everybody, so there's more expectation.
There is nothing but ceiling. I love this.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
I loved this move from Chicago. So Chicago to me
winners yep uhh. I was disappointed that Connecticut did not
select Dage of Fair or Charisma Osbourne.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
I was really hoping that they would go point guard.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
But I also will be honest to saying that I
am not familiar with the game of La King, so
I don't know what they're getting in her, and I
do want to take the time to see and do
a little bit more research to know what they're getting
in her.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
But to your point, Chris, and I'm sure my girl, Ice.
Speaker 5 (09:03):
Who is joining us w NBA college women's basketball analyst
former Syracuse Greg y'all not going double team all right, I.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Just want to throw that out down. Y'all ain't a
double team, damn Orange what.
Speaker 5 (09:20):
I know she'll have some comments on this too, But
I do think that Er going to Vegas was an
incredible steal having Liz Kittley there possibly not only rehabbing,
but really learning, understanding, prepping. And for the sake of
saying that, you know, Candice Parker doesn't return for another
for a third year in Las Vegas. What an incredible
(09:41):
center to have in Kittley. So yeah, they definitely made
some big moves late that I really loved. But Ice Grol, like,
what did you think of last of last night's thrath?
Speaker 6 (09:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (09:54):
Yeah, well I think it looked up to the height.
You know, I think following the college basketball season, the
unto see to Gang Cox and Caitlin Clark, like, I
just think a lot of the storylines that we saw
and seeing players being able to continue their careers. I
felt like every pick I just fell like Andrea Carter
like while we were watching the show, like, oh that's
a good fit.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Oh that's a good fit.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Oh that's a good fit for her. And so you
just want a lot of these players to be able,
like you said, urge to learn from those that are
in front of them. You talk about steals, but I
just think about like stealing well stealing Gabe the Asian
far and training camp, like to be around Chelsea, wealm
Chelsea great Kittley, like he said, to learn with Asia
Wilson for a year, like Thanky Hammon is planning for
(10:34):
the future, like she felt was the three Peters all
the way and she's like after that, we're gonna need
to re up. And she's planning for the future.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
Chicago.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
I think Chicago will be the hungriest teen in the league.
Like hungry. We forget about Arena Maybray that's there, like
has improved her gate tremendously overseas every single year Jana
Evans who had to play behind several guards. But now
Khalia Copper isn't there. She can be as hungry as
she wants. And you just add Camilla, you add Angel,
you at Izny like it's just gonna be a Hull
(11:04):
Gary team. So I love to Still I'm excited to
see what she can do as a former player now
head coaches a w I think it's a lot of
first there in that organization. I think Chicago can star
with that for Atlanta because you mentioned that. I sometimes
find it difficult when we go overseas too early in
(11:24):
the draft, like if we have young players that are
especially young. Some of these players were born in two
thousand and four. I'm donelast ten then then I'm young
so on. So I'm just like, you know, we go
overseas really really early in the last great first round,
we leave players like Nika Mule, Charisma Osbourne, so left
Taylor we talk about Steel, I think Indiana Fever, which
(11:47):
honestly Taylor cardin Leia Boston, But you also got one
of the best Permeter de finisers. We still on a
college game. Is shek cheap her stuff on that roster?
Now we see a two way roster. We know Leah
plays defense. We know, so let's play defense. We know
Erica will will do think right. So I think that
they have a lot of pieces over there. But I
also thought the less tailor charisma off four Nika Mule
goalie so late just tells you the depth of this draft,
(12:09):
which we haven't seen a couple of years. I really
do think the drafts have been short for a few years,
but this year it was really really deep.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
It was deep. And the other thing that really.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Gave me a lot of I would say excitement is
or intrigue is the New York Liberty. We know how
much they needed a guard who could play defense but
also create their own shot. And I thought a lot
of people, you know in the crowd, they want a
Nika Mule to go there, but they went with Marquishi Davis.
(12:42):
So shout out coach Yo from Ole Miss. This is
a lady who is going to be a wonderful fit
for the Liberty. And I know they are stacked right
in terms of the roster spots, but I think this
will definitely help them elevate them and give them a
better shot eventually if they are going to meet with
(13:03):
the Las Vegas Aces in the finals once again. But yeah,
what what did you think, Tarika about the moves deliberty
made after the season they had last year, knowing the
deficiencies that they needed to shore up. Oh and also
Jalen Sharad, Jalen Sarad should have been drafted right now
(13:24):
if you signed to a training camp spot.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
But the fact that she.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Yeah, yeah, that was that was one of my sleepers, Chris, oh,
my I have down over here. Was like we forget
sometimes about those that get invited to training camp. We
all focus on the draft. I think Jayl's rob All
message somebody's spot or leaf exposed an area that they
really need to feel like they're talking about.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
I don't really have thoughts one way or the other
on New York's draft pick. I am a fan of
Marquis Sia Davis.
Speaker 4 (13:54):
I'm not sure if I really would have saw her
going to New York.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
Nothing about her just you know, I feel like, at
the same time, there are things that I would have
rather seen her learn from a difference from a different team.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
So I was a little.
Speaker 5 (14:08):
Surprised to see her going to New York, but quite honestly,
I think the two teams that surprised me the more,
or let me not say the two teams. The two
selections that surprised me the most was one Alia bought.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
Aliah Edwards going to Washington.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
I honestly thought she would have either ended up in
Dallas or Minnesota.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
So with that same thought.
Speaker 5 (14:32):
Process, Alisa Peely going to Minnesota, I was surprised by that.
I honestly thought Alia was gonna make some what's gonna
be in in in Minnesota?
Speaker 4 (14:42):
And I was thinking, Wow, you know Aliyah on the.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
In the inside causing some damage with Diamond, who's coming
back for a second year fee out, Like I'm already
like thinking like, okay, this is a good sixtyed right here,
five to sixty, and we see it like easily.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
That's even before the season starts, right, So I was surprise.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
But I'm also thinking to myself, I like, Alisa Keeley
in Minnesota, something about that that post player that they
that Minnesota was truly missing because of injuries last year.
I just really think that Now that I'm like processing it,
I'm like, Okay, I could see this working out. But
I was surprised by that pick. I think the other
(15:23):
surprised but looked surprised, and it probably wasn't a surprise
too many, but it was definitely a surprise to me.
I actually thought that La was going to pick Camila
Cardoso for US. Oh, yes, Rakia Jackson. The you now
have a true perimeter go to option in Rakia that
(15:46):
this team absolutely needed. And now you've got a rent protector.
Now they're gonna have to work with cam to one
ensure her did surprise so that she can sting out.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
Of fun trouble.
Speaker 4 (15:57):
And two, I think of the two between her and Camilla.
Speaker 5 (16:01):
I get it she wasn't better offensive weapon, but I'm thinking,
my goodness, what a way to rebuild a pro What
a way to rebuild a team and rebuild a program
with two players who are going to bring you offensively,
solidify you on that end too, well defensively, like well
from the perimeter, from the paint. You got that lockdown defensively.
(16:23):
And three, Kim and Rachia are as Hollywood as you
then brought the theta Allie about to cut up a
cat your mountains her?
Speaker 1 (16:34):
What's good?
Speaker 5 (16:34):
When you get out there's who were your surprise?
Speaker 4 (16:38):
It's like what surprised you with the draft.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
Yeah, so I would say, you know, pleasant surprise.
Speaker 4 (16:43):
And who I really liked. A really good pick was
Ja C.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
Sheldon to Dallas. I think Dallas has a number of
guards who didn't played last year, like Lul Lopez Denischal
that graduated from Yukon I didn't get a lot of time.
I love jay z games.
Speaker 4 (16:56):
She's the two way player.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
She had said, you know in her interview she decided
to play with the riquet Gobalalle and I think this
is the team that had some depth inside, right they
built the last couple of years, but they brought in
a lot of good guards and beat that trading camp. Also,
Ashley A Wolf. Ashley A Wolf is also going to Dallas.
It was towards that way hoping. Ye yo, she was
hoping when she was in the White Program, right under
(17:18):
people who believed in her, and so I feel like
she's got something to prove. So I'm just I love
like the chitty team that Ashley, the little Lopez, senesshaw
veron Coburn, Like they have some good guards over there
and then Crystal Dangerfield that can really challenge each other
and figure out who was the best guard. Group to
bring to this team to compliment Rique once Dot two
(17:38):
comes back, and then obviously they have their inside present.
Speaker 4 (17:40):
I think Dallas to.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
Be one of the most versatile teams in the league,
and that's what I'm looking to see. I think they
have first satile pieces.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
They definitely do.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
Like you said, they have a lot of great real
players or potential role players, you know, coming off the
bench at the perimeter spot, at the guard play.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
They're gonna be yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Right, last year, we thought they were going to be
a pick that could potentially upset the Aces. We saw
how close they got in a couple of games of
that last game. But this year, when you add the
compliments of Jacy Sheldon, who's a great two way player
three and d ask you she know, she's a great bucket.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
I have a lot of high hopes for how they
all work together.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
And you know, Isis have delivered right here on this
show as expected, because you always.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
Do when you're on your a game and when you're
on center stage.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
But that's going to wrap up this part of the broadcast,
or take a little short break, and then we're going
to talk about conference re alignment. But Isis thanks so
much for stopping by. Will really appreciate you for everything
you did.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Love you guys, Love y'all, Love y'all, y'all, do bread
work at you.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
Let's turn the page.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
Let's go back to the college ranks, Tarika, because Conference
realign Men has really ruined the purity, I think the
essence of college sports and what makes it so special.
Because now we have Stanford and Cal going to play
(19:14):
in the ACC next year. That that's wild. Those road trips,
the traveling logistics. And I know coach tar Van Vere,
who just retired the all time winning his coach in
D one history, said the ACC transition wasn't part of it.
(19:34):
She just felt it was time. I'm not sure if
I entirely believe her, like I just don't fully, but
it's sad to see what it's doing because you lose
one of the greatest coaches in sports, right not just
basketball pioneer, and then shortly after that Kiki Erie. Often
(19:58):
it was their best it was going to be their
best player returning after Cameron Bring left, and she actually
was sometimes a better player on the court.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
Even when Kim was playing.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
Now she's entering the transfer portal and she put a
do not contact tag on her transfer portal status, so
that means you don't contact me, y'all gonna I'm gonna
contact you, like or maybe I've already had my mindset up.
So I'm curious do you feel the same way when
it comes to Tara retiring one? And then also how
(20:27):
it affects these robberies and just the beauty of different
different parts of the game.
Speaker 5 (20:35):
Chris, we are on the same page as it relates
to Tara retiring. I think legacy is important, right and
although I have no doubt in my mind that had
she continued to stay at Stanford, Stanford would still remain
a top team in women's basketball, now we can this
(20:55):
conference realignment affects many sports, So we're not talking about,
you know, how it will fare for those in the
college football sector, because I think that, more than anything
is where a lot of these realignments will be felt.
But I just think about how this NCAA tournament that
we just witnessed on the women's side really gave us
(21:16):
a true look of how incredible Pac twelve basketball is. Specifically,
we had USC as a one seed, UCLA was a
one seed. Oregon State challenged South Carolina as much as
most any other school had. It was just so much good,
you know, for lack of better terms, it was just
(21:37):
so so many good PAC twelve teams.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
And now those.
Speaker 5 (21:42):
Teams are in the Big Ten, the PAC, in the ACC,
some have gone to the Big twelve. It's just and
so if we're already facing challenges we travel, we're already
facing challenges with you know, being able to be seen
because how long had we talked about PAC twelve teams
not being able to be seen or the exposure because
(22:02):
of the time different from the East Coast. So there's that,
But then there's also just the quality of play. Right,
There's a different level of talent in the ACC and
the Big Ten and the SEC than there is in
these in these other other conferences. And I think Terror
was just like, I don't want to deal with setting
that up. I don't want to deal with travel, I
(22:24):
don't want to deal with I don't want to deal
with what comes along with conference realignment. But more importantly,
and maybe she wasn't thinking this exactly because this isn't
the kind of person that Tara is, but certainly your
legacy is on the line. You go to a new
conference and you don't put up the kind of product
that Stanford is typically known for putting out. Then people
(22:46):
start to ask questions. Then people start to say, is
it time for you to retire? No, do the smart thing.
Go out on top, go out one.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
Of the best.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
You're the winning this coach in college basketball history. Like
do that? Like, just do that.
Speaker 5 (22:59):
And I think that's what she did. I think that
makes the most sense, and I'm here for it. But
I'm not here for USC being in a Big Ten.
The Big Ten is a Midwest conference.
Speaker 4 (23:08):
What are we doing? I was pissed off when the
Rutgers joined the Big Ten, so.
Speaker 5 (23:13):
You can clearly see what I'm right. I'm lying, what
are we doing? So that that just does not make
sense to me. But I just think that if the
Pac twelve was gonna have any year from a basketball
season standpoint, to go out, this was one of the
best ways that you could have seen this conference dissolve
(23:33):
with winners, with you know, players making names for themselves.
Mackenzie Forbes out of US he was drafted last night,
like Charisma was drafted. Elisa Peeley from Utah was drafted.
So if there was one way for a conference to
go out like this was a hell of a way
for the PAC.
Speaker 1 (23:50):
Swell to go out for real.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
Like between the men's football programs in the PAC twelve
special year, and then of course the women's basketball they
where undoubtedly, especially or at least in the women's aspect,
the hardest conference in the nation. Like we're so used
to seeing, you know, SEC being the toughest conference in
women's basketball, but yeah, this year PAC twelve was a
(24:14):
gonolin Like they were beating up on each other.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
Yeah, every single night, whether.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
It's a Colorado got Colorado, yeah, Colorado, Arizona had some
upsets like it just everybody had a night where they
showed they could compete with some of the best teams
in the country. And it's all really due to greed
for these TV contracts, right, and it just messes up
(24:39):
so much of these people's, these players lives and coaches.
And I think maybe another thing quickly, I'm not sure
how invested Tar was in the NIL structure. Maybe she
comes to, you know, old school, old guards, so didn't
really buy into that as much. I know they had
different deals. Yeah, I think that might have played a
(24:59):
role as well.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
Yeah, yeah, but good luck to Tara.
Speaker 5 (25:04):
She meant a lot to women's basketball. I think she
meant a lot to a lot of people. She certainly
is someone who played a significant portion and why we
have a professional women's basketball league in the United States
at this moment. So if we're nothing else, if we
have not said so, no, I mixed last week's show,
(25:25):
so I specifically didn't get an opportunity to, but I
certainly want to just congratulate Tara and thank her for
everything that she's done, even when it wasn't easy right then,
when everyone didn't like you, even when you could have
made some different or better decisions.
Speaker 4 (25:43):
There are more people who.
Speaker 5 (25:44):
Talk about how you've impacted them in a positive way
than there are those who have felt the opposite or
said the negative.
Speaker 4 (25:52):
So with that, thank you, Tara, and I wish you
the best.
Speaker 5 (25:56):
I know she's gonna stay on as an advisor in
an advisory capacity, but your impact is appreciated.
Speaker 4 (26:03):
And we're gonna take a quick break here, but after this,
we're gonna slide into the NBA Play Ins Tournament because
we got to talk about NBA.
Speaker 5 (26:11):
Playing and uh, we'll have jump ball coming up after that,
because you know, Schari, Shari, could you know you know
Schari know how she does.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
To be cutting up after eighty two games.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
We are here, the playing tournament is here, and the
playoffs are quickly approaching, Tarika. And on the Western Conference side,
as we always say, I feel like it is the
wild Wild West. Those teams are superior to the Eastern Conference.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
Yeah, you gotta.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
I'm just saying that's a strong statement.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
Hey, between Denver Dallas, you know, the t Wolves, the Thunder.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
I'm there's a lot of question marks on that East
even though you have some really talented teams. But when
it comes to the Western Conference playoffs and some of
the better series, for me in that first round, it's
gotta be the t Wolves going up against the Suns, right,
because these are two teams that have been up and
(27:21):
down when.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
It comes to their lack of experience.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
With the t Wolves and how they play sometimes they're
not always as crisp as you want or mature basketball IQ.
And then the Sons, who any given day they can
lay an egg and then another day they could play
lights out like we saw in the final game of
the regular season, Radley Beal going off really find in
his group and with Anthony Edwards potentially being one of
(27:45):
the faces of the league in the coming years, and
then Cat Carl Anthony Towns, his personality, Rudy Gobert, Mike Conley.
I'm really gonna have a fun time watching them duke
it out with the Sons with Devin Booker KD Rally, Bill,
I feel that they're going to give us a seven
(28:05):
game series. And I know there's a lot of pressure
on Phoenix, by the way, because they have KD and
they're so strapped with that core, D book Rally and KT.
Speaker 1 (28:17):
If they don't get it done, it's gonna be gonna
be some issues, to say the least. Three.
Speaker 4 (28:26):
Yeah, you ain't loud about that. I don't really. I
will say this.
Speaker 5 (28:31):
I think I'm not really gonna get too much in
on the West, but I will say that if the
one team in the West that I'm incredibly excited to watch,
and that's going to be Okay. See, Okay, See just
did a hell of a job of securing their first
place first place slot.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
They did an even better job of ensuring.
Speaker 5 (28:48):
That if they do end up getting into a matchup
with Denver, they're going to have home court advantage, which
is incredible. They're a young team with no playoff experience,
and as much as that could hurt you, I think
that that actually helps this team because they're playing with
no fear and Shaye Jule as Alexandra should probably win MVP,
but that's abe hinter there. So that's where I am.
(29:09):
I look at this East though, and one I will say,
there's been a lot of conversation about whether or not
we should even like or how we feel about this
play in tournament. And I have to remind everyone that
the Miami Heat was a play in tournament team last
season and they made it all the way to the
NBA Finals. So with that being said, people better stop
(29:31):
sleeping on the play in tournament. The play in tournament
can really put you in a position where you have
some teams that might be a little underseated or they
find that fire. And that reminds me of the Philadelphia
seventy six ers, why because I don't believe that they
would have even been a playing team had they had
Joel and b for those two months that he was
out injured. So that's the one team that sticks in
(29:54):
my head. But as I also look at this East,
I'm thinking to myself, Okay, Milwaukee is probably going to
be playing the first matchup without Yiannis.
Speaker 4 (30:04):
Y'all going home.
Speaker 5 (30:07):
I told y'all about it, y'all. I told y'all, I
told Milwaukee about themselves months ago. I told y'all, this
was a bad move to get knocked. I told y'all,
yann was gonna be upset by the end of the season.
Speaker 4 (30:18):
I told y'all.
Speaker 5 (30:19):
And I don't want a two by all more. But
I told y'all, y'all going home. So that is what
it is. The Knicks great position. Love this for the
Knicks thought. I remember saying earlier on this show in
a previous episode that I felt like the Knicks could
potentially be in the Eastern Conference team, Eastern Conference Finals team.
(30:40):
I still stand by that and the way that this
playoff structure would pan out. If people who we suspect wins,
they're playing in matchups and they get together, I think
this could still be potentially in the Eastern Conference Finals team.
So from the East perspective, yeah, I do think a
record wise, they're not as strong as the West. I
(31:02):
give you that, Chris, but I would just say don't
right off the eatist because there are themes that could
catch fire. I think the Knicks are that team. The
Sixers are that team for me, and I don't even
need to mention Boston because they are the number one
seed for reasons.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
Yeah, Boston is the number one seed for a reason.
Now they have the only question mark is are they
going to fulfill you know, the promise that everybody expects
to come true, which is when the NBA title after
not having one one since two thousand and eight, and
that it's been a long time. The other hand, part
(31:38):
that I'm really interested in, how about the magic against
the Calves, right Palo, ben Caro, Jalen Suggs, Cole Anthony
got the Wagner guys. They're a really fun team that
doesn't get a lot of love because they are in Orlando,
even though they do have a really great player to
(31:59):
watch in Palo leading the troops. So yeah, Cavaliers there.
I don't know what's going on with them. Not sure
how much longer Donovan Mitchell is gonna be there. The
magic they have the posts right of the league currently,
even if they don't get the same amount of love
that they should, So that that matchup is something I'm
(32:20):
looking for.
Speaker 1 (32:21):
I expect the Orlando Magic to.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Uh to take out Cleveland, and I'm sticking by that
and that's what's gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (32:29):
Yeah, I'm just I'm just saying.
Speaker 5 (32:32):
Chris making some real big so some real big conjectures
on this good show today.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
It's a four or five match. You know.
Speaker 2 (32:39):
Now, what would be big is if the Heat end
up in the eighth seed, right, and then they got
a fake boss.
Speaker 4 (32:46):
That would be crazy.
Speaker 5 (32:46):
If the Heat be if the Heat defeated, if the
Heat ended up making the AC I would be wild.
But you know, nobody believes is gonna be in this playoffs,
Atlanta or Chakhan.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
Why why are we doing them like that? Like we
ain't speaking them?
Speaker 1 (33:07):
What's we?
Speaker 4 (33:08):
Ain't no good Chris?
Speaker 1 (33:09):
Wait, hey, look that's what you know. What's funny? People
are telling the bullster over here.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
We were gonna get there there a minute though, because
she got some thoughts about a statue that was erected
earlier in the week, drew a whole lot of social
media comments and went viral, not exactly the right reasons.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
That's our jump ball segment, and we're gonna tap into that.
After a quick break.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
It's time now for our jump ball segment back here
with Tarika and Tarika. Social media lit up the entire
Sixers organization just the other day when they revealed the
statue for the legendary, the iconic, the revolutionary Alan Iverson,
also known as the Answer the jokes. Oh my goodness,
(34:06):
because the statue, if you guys haven't seen it by now,
was very small, right, and we know Ai is a
small individual, Jobbi when it's all said and done, not
even six feet probably five to ten, but meant it,
he play a whole lot bigger than his actual height.
The other thing that we learned, or I learned, is
(34:28):
that this is at the practice facility right in Camden,
New Jersey, and the rest of the legends that they've
honored with these statues have similar sizes for the exact
same size. Now for me, I initially felt they violated Ai,
given all that he's done for the game and for
that organization. But then when people pointed out they do
(34:50):
this for all their greats, I said, okay, so it's
not personal, but I still don't like it whatsoever, because
why are you you minimizing their greatness by showing these
likes or stack size statues, these byte size statues. No,
give me that larger than life feel like we see
(35:13):
with Michael George Chicago, Kobe Bryant, La Shaquille O'Neal, Magic Johnson.
I don't want the Toys r Us statues. I don't
want them. I don't want the Toddler statues. I want
statues that are going to give more value to these
players and the players they can appreciate. That's fine, right,
(35:34):
but as a billion dollar organization, there is no reason
why you need to be doing that. If anything, you
need to put them on a pedestal. And that's all
I'm gonna say, Tarika. I don't think you agree with
that based on your face, but I don't give a
damn because this is my point and I'm sticking to it.
Speaker 4 (35:55):
Stied stand since I was down on it. That's what's up.
Speaker 5 (35:58):
I completely disagree, completely disagree, completely disagree because number one,
as you've already stated, it ain't like they treated Ai
no different. They treated him the same way they treated
every other legend that they consider to be a legend.
When you hear people out here talking about the legendary
players of the NBA, you hear Philadelphia fans mention people
like Moses Malone who has a statue. You hear Philadelphia
(36:21):
fans mention people like Mochiks who has a statue. And furthermore,
we don't even call them statues because they don't call
them statues.
Speaker 4 (36:29):
They call them sculptures.
Speaker 5 (36:30):
So I think that in itself is the reason why
some people are mad, because they're confusing statues and sculptures.
Number two, this is how they honor their legends. It
ain't for everybody in their mama to care about how
they honor their legends. Number three, I've been in a
room with Ai.
Speaker 4 (36:48):
AI is snack size, AI is bite sized. AI small
as hell.
Speaker 5 (36:52):
So no, his statue, his sculpture ain't gonna look the
same as a six ' four six six six eight
seven feet centers and forwards and doctor J's and everybody
else that they got out there.
Speaker 4 (37:05):
Because he ain't the same size as them.
Speaker 5 (37:08):
It's just I'm one number four, and I hope I'm
on four because I don't even know where I am
right now in this coountant situation. Then because I'm just
going but on four, I'm trying to understand why everybody
else is in seventy six ers business like that's what
I don't get now I do understand, hey, people may
have been misunderstanding what and how these things look as
(37:33):
it relates to the seventy six ers because everybody else
does big outside of the Staples Center. Yes I still
say Staples, not Crypto, but outside of the Staples Centers,
you know. But I just think that it's unfair of
us to try to criticize how eighteen that has consistently
nobody said nothing else about. No one at any point
(37:54):
said anything about any of these other sculptures outside of
the Philadelphia Trading Facility, and all of these years that
they've been there, ain't Nobody had no thoughts and had
no complaints. People only started to give a damn when
they created a sculpture. Futtish the shortest individual who playing
on the damn team. If you don't go somewhere and
sit down at least sixer stand alone and let them.
(38:14):
And furthermore, for those people who are continuing to compare
it to the Rocky Statue, folks, Philadelphia didn't buy the
Rocky Statue. MGM Studios did, and they gave it to
the city as a gift.
Speaker 4 (38:26):
Let it go, hey, let.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
It go, but you don't see the absurdity.
Speaker 4 (38:32):
Of that their position.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
I don't die the juxtaposition of a fictional character in
Rocky Balboa having a much larger sculpture statue, I already
want to call it right then, actual NBA players.
Speaker 5 (38:49):
No, It's a fictional character that was given to them
by a booby studio point of years before. Allen Iverson
never stepped foot on the basketball cot.
Speaker 1 (38:58):
But that's about why are we give me?
Speaker 2 (39:01):
Why are the studios able to give more left to
a fictional character than the Sixers are?
Speaker 4 (39:09):
Have you not seen a budget? Chrazy?
Speaker 1 (39:13):
You act like the Sixers are broke.
Speaker 4 (39:18):
I'm saying, where was this care?
Speaker 5 (39:19):
A concern about the scopsures that Philadelphia Sixers have used
to honor their legends. Previously, no one cared about the
size of these other statues until it was AI And
I'm saying, if you mad about the size, then you
should have been mad about the size fifteen years ago.
Speaker 4 (39:37):
Why are you mad about the size now?
Speaker 2 (39:38):
Why I am mad about the size? That happened because I,
full disclosure, had no idea. This is how they did things, man,
That is why so.
Speaker 4 (39:47):
Manybody both outraged.
Speaker 5 (39:49):
Because you really care, you would have been out here
looking at statues that everyone they gonna complain about Asia
Wilson's statue too.
Speaker 2 (39:57):
No, no, no, because in a different stratosphere. My point is
I didn't know. Had I known, If I was into it,
then of course you talk about fake out reason. I
can't speak for everybody else, but I can speak with myself.
If I knew those statues or sculptures or the size
that they were before AI, I would add the same
(40:18):
heat for the six Yers, the same.
Speaker 4 (40:20):
Cheery Mercury got to say, what did ch.
Speaker 1 (40:22):
Replace take it away? What's up, y'all?
Speaker 6 (40:26):
I'm here in New York in Times Square covering the
Team USA media summit for the next few days. It's
been an incredible time. But you know, I had to
get in on this jump ball. Okay, So the Allen
Iverson snack sized bite size statue, it rubbed me the
wrong way.
Speaker 4 (40:45):
But here's the deal.
Speaker 6 (40:46):
I understand that this statue is amongst several others that
are also extremely small in my opinion, so I don't
take it personally. I don't think AI takes it personally either.
I will say this, I think that the Philadelphia seventy
six Ers organization just needs to rethink how they're rolling
out statues. This actually has nothing to do with anybody
(41:08):
that they've honored. This is how they do things. If
you look at the other statues, they're just as small.
So I just proposed that the Sixers organization says, hey,
let's rethink this statue thing. Hey, maybe we can put
some bigger statues in front of the stadium like other
professional teams do. That's really my only take. Is it funny, Yes,
(41:31):
it's funny. These little statues are incredibly hilarious to me.
But on the other side, you know, I just would
like the Sixers to rethink this thing and again shout
out to AI. He deserves every single accolade he receives.
He really really does. It's about time to me, this
should have come a lot earlier in his retirement. But
(41:54):
it's fine.
Speaker 4 (41:54):
At least it's here.
Speaker 6 (41:56):
So now that it is here and social media has
come out and said what they wanted to say and
reacted to this particular statue, it opens the floodgates for
think tanks about how the Sixers organization can do statues
moving forward. And you can leave all the ones you've
done there, Let's just start a new trend. Let's make
them bigger, and even if you keep them outside of
(42:18):
the practice facility, just make them a little bigger. That's
all I'm saying.
Speaker 5 (42:21):
Make them feel like a statue, not a lawn known,
That's all I'm saying. I think you and Shari need
to get y'allselves together because this. But I already knew
that this jump ball topic was about to be a
hot topic, just because I just knew we wasn't gonna
see out of eye on this. But before we get
out of here, Chris, we would be remiss to mention
(42:42):
the recent news of Blake Griffin retiring. Blake Griffin clearly
was someone who had a pretty decent career for the
most part of his career, and even though as a
Pistons fan I throw out there that he played for
us towards the tail end of his career, what I
loved most is that he definitely put on for the
CD at Detroit. I remember specifically that he donated uniforms
(43:05):
and a new floor to my high school, Persian High
School in the city of Detroit, and he always got
love and respect for that.
Speaker 4 (43:10):
So kudos to a great career. Wish him nothing but
the best in the next level of whatever endeavor it
is that he decides to move on to. But Christ
and he quick thoughts on Blake calling in his career.
Speaker 1 (43:22):
I think it was long overdue for him, right.
Speaker 2 (43:24):
We saw how he transitioned, you know, after that Pistons
tenure then went to the Celtics. You could see he
just didn't have that same spring to his athleticism.
Speaker 1 (43:36):
Right.
Speaker 2 (43:37):
He was becoming less and less effective, even though he
did expand his game when he's when he was with
Detroit when he couldn't rely on us athleticism. But one
of the most exciting players the game has ever seen.
Lob City was an amazing time back there with the
Clippers and then Aim kind of revamping his career with
the Pistons.
Speaker 1 (43:57):
That was fun to watch.
Speaker 2 (43:58):
But yeah, I've enjoyed watched him from Oklahoma when he
was a superstar freshman two in the NBA giving us
highlight real plays day in and day out. To shout
out to him, like you said, can't wait to see
what he does in the next chapter of his life.
Speaker 1 (44:15):
And on that note, that's all the time we have, y'all.
Speaker 2 (44:17):
