Speaker 1 (00:01):
It's welcome, Welcome, Welcome. This is for from the South.
(00:21):
My name is Fabrizio Pano. I'm your host. And in
this episode, we don't have Steve Hilly again. He'll be
back pretty soon. But I have good news for you
guys because we have my favorite guests so far, one
of the best comics in Latin America according to myself,
and a very different mine. Paloma Salast from Chile is
(00:44):
here with us again. Uh, and we're gonna talk about
some news about what's going on in Big Latin America.
That's the concept that we created in this podcast. What
do you think when someone totally like Big Latin America,
what do you think it is a huge lie invented Americans.
Another way to sell a podcast. Absolutely, like nobody in
(01:09):
Latin America is Latin until they hit the United States.
Like nobody feels Latin unless they are surrounded by ginghos.
Like yeah, I was in Miami a couple of weeks ago,
and if if if I feel so Latino when I'm there,
and I don't feel that way any any other places
(01:30):
in the world, Like when you're in Tila, you feel Danish,
right of course, because I have Danish I think, but
but I am absolutely convinced Latino is Uh is like
notion invented by Jennifer Lopez exactly. It's it's just Jennifer
(01:54):
Lopez people, which is weird because people is the Mr
world Wide. He don't even want to be lat you know,
he would to be MISS Worldwide. Imagine like his ancestry results. Sir,
you're exactly every country in the world. He did three
and me fun Worldwide. You're on yeah, the world, you
(02:22):
are miss your worldwide app. So we're talk aout these
politicians decided to solve their problems with an m M
A fight. Uh. We're also going to talk about what's
going on in in Mold. Well, we're still going to
dive a little bit of what's going on in Chili.
I want to talk specifically about how elm Musk that
is now the most important person of the year according
(02:43):
to Times Magazine. It's uh, it's destroying our culture um
and taking also or lithium. Uh. And we're gonna talk
about other issues that happening in the big Latin America. Bachelotte,
the president of ex president of Chili, is also part
of the news again, so a lot of crazy things
going on, But I want to start with uh, yeah,
(03:06):
we want to start with m M A squad. Uh
it's m m that's how you call this mixed martial arts. Okay,
this is always sounds like I know a lot about this.
You sounded like Joe Rogan for a minute. M M
A happens inside a cage, yes, yes, and a mixed
(03:30):
martial arts, which means like everything goes. I guess like
you can hit someone in the ball sack with your
toe nail and that's fine. It's kind of crazy that
they decided, okay, do you fight any way you want,
and we're going to call this sport now, wen we
figured our way to just street fights. Now there maybe
(03:51):
at some point that we on the Olympics, which is
just having siblings, right, like having a sister brother next
uh in your age, right like people people grow up
doing m M A a lot right way. In my mind,
m M A sounds like a drug because of m A.
(04:13):
Oh that's it, which is a little bit different like
m D M A is like supposed to make you
feel like warm and cozy. I want to hug everyone.
It's exactly the opposite. It's like it's the D. It's
the D makes the whole different. Hey, we arguing all day,
let's do m no this m um. So this is
(04:40):
what happened in Brazil. Two politicians, tire of their difference,
decided to solve this problem in an m m A fight.
Uh yeah, that's serious, you know, like this happened in
one of the states, the state of Amazona. That's the
state of Brazil. And yeah it he knew that Silva
(05:04):
x Concerral. I don't know how to translate that. Uh
he said, it's like leslie nope, figure, I guess, Yeah,
council council, council council person in like in a small
district area. I don't know. Yeah, he said, cana and
seem but when such shameless you shameless? Uh yeah, yeah,
(05:35):
he sounds like a like a shameless guy. Zimo. He
is the mayor of the state of Amazona. So this
is the councilman. He was giving some counsel to the
mayor and they decided to figure out. Yeah, it's all
about this is the funniest part. This is all about
the conservation of an aquatic park. Ah. So the mayor
(05:57):
wants to shut it down. The mayor want to shut
it down. He wanted to keep the conservation of this place.
So they decided to solve this problem with that. Let
me get this straight. The councilman wanted it shut down
and the mayor wants to keep it. I think it's
the opposite. I think the mayor was I'm tired of
(06:17):
this part. We're shutting down the park. We don't need it.
And the council guy was like, you shameless scoundrel. Just
our town is known for aquatics park and in the Amazonas,
see in the middle of the Amazonas, and now we
(06:37):
will we will only be known for this duel. So
we're about to have according to this this this story. Uh,
they're they're insulting each other for a long time, and
so that the mayor decided to make a video saying
to the councilman, let's get into the fight. Uh. Of
course everyone was like, what is this. This is not
(06:59):
the way it's sold problem. But the mayor decided to
change the strategy and they like, we're not gonna do
a street fight, We're gonna do an m M a fight.
That the difference is just the name. It's gonna be. Yeah,
they're going to do it. In a place with the
referee and the crowd. I need to see a picture
of these people. I can show you. Are they fit like?
(07:21):
Do they look like they do? M m I think
they look like a mayor and a councilman. But resilience.
You know, Brazilians are I think a very good looking people.
Uh you can see fighting. They're shirtless people and short
(07:42):
shorts and they appear to be having sex. It happened
to be you know, m m A is really romantic
or all these all these fights they have some sexual
completely connotations underneath. Absolutely it's half naked people just full
(08:05):
contact touch body touching parts. No, it's of course everyone
in an audience is asking who won after three rounds.
I'm going to tell you who lost? Everyone everyone they see,
the town of Amazonia, the taxpayers, they lost, big deal.
(08:26):
Well the mayor one. The mayor one, of course was
very good at m m A fight. It's a really
good Adam Sandler movie movie. Yeah. Well this is good
for everyone, not for the part that now it's gone
because of the m m A fight. They spend all
(08:48):
the money. But what about this is became normal thing.
This is just like this is a great decision making
the next debates who cares fight fight it out? Yeah,
what do you think about that? I think, uh, it's uh,
we're coming to this, but most politicians are not in
(09:11):
good shape. No, and I think the future is less
likely to for this to happen. I mean kids nowadays, Uh,
they don't even I have ever touched another human person.
Yeah they way, m M A is so popular in
that generation. It's like we've never seen anyone touching each other.
(09:34):
Like what happens when you another person to death? Like, yeah,
you're right, you're right. Once again. It's like, I think
politicians are not in good shape and it will be
nice then now and on. Every politician has to be
working out all day so they can they can pass
(09:54):
legislations through fist fights and be attractive, which is super
important for politics, super important. And most of the followers
of the more extreme Churchill his main thing was like
his abs right, ye beautiful man think to say about
(10:16):
his body shape. But that's that's one of the stories
we want to discuss today. I want to talk about
another one that you shameless scoundrel back to Chili because
(10:43):
Michelle Bacheltte. For the ones who don't know Mitchell was
the president of Chile twice, and she became the iconic
figure for the country. He's like the mom. She's our mom.
I wish he was like my real mom. But and
the cool thing is like she And one of the
reasons why I think she's so beloved is she talked
(11:04):
like a mom. She has the peace and the timing.
She's like an Angela Merkele. Absolutely, at the same time,
she's your mom. You know, she loves you, she'd take
care of you. She's nice, she's blied. She's talking this
you know, very calm. Way. Uh. There's pictures of her
(11:28):
entering the ocean in a beach wearing a very sensible
one piece suit made for a lady such as her,
and she's just dipping the lower part of her buttocks
and it's just so cute. It's beautiful. It's beautiful. She's
(11:48):
a woman, but she's a lady, and she has a
best friend. She's kind of in a like an opera figure.
It too right, you're right, you're right, kind of opray.
Maybe the problem with in the US most people are
like when they think about a woman politician, they think
about Hillary Clinton, and she's not like Hillary Clinton at all.
(12:10):
She's like Angela Angela Merkel, but with with Oprah and
like some like mother, but some Beatty White, Yeah, a
little Betty White. Also Betty White sparkle, Betty White sparkles
on a big Angela Merkel beef. She looks she looks
(12:32):
like very much if you, if you, if anyone is
googling her now, she looks very much like Angela Mercle. Yeah,
it's a tube with a face. They should be doing
a like now they're both not in government, should be
like touring together. Yeah. But but Michelle is still like power.
She's a big power figure for the whole world. You know,
(12:55):
she's working in the charge. Yeah, she's in charge of
you and women. She's like the president and human rights,
uh observer something like that. I don't, I don't, I
don't know how specifically. A big deal, but she's a
big deal. Yeah, she's a big deal. And that's one
of the reasons why everyone was waiting for her to
say something about the Chileance elections. And well, it's funny
(13:20):
because for a long time the left that is now
represented by Gabriel Boridge was trying out of criticism to
the government, her government or like the years when she
was in government and her coalition bill. But now when
she's back, everyone was waiting for her, like Jesus Christ.
(13:43):
Everyone was just like so excited that she she will
be back just to give a speech and say I'll
vote for Borridge. So she put a video out there
minutes minute minutes ago before we start taping, saying that
she will support So the video itself is so motherly,
like I want these elections to be like the feast
(14:06):
of democracy for everyone to participate and plans to go
vote early, children and be nice to each other. It's like,
I'm going to vote for Boring because he's going to
do good. Thanks for our democracy, but we can all
be friends, right Like it's kind of like that. I'm
(14:40):
gonna move on to the next story because uh Time
magazine came out with the person of the Year and
this year was Ellen Musk, and people will be like
what it does not related to Latin America. This is
not the podcast that I'm supposed to be. It is
for many reasons. One is it Ellen Musk is Peruvian.
(15:02):
He's really into uh or lithium for batteries, so he's
he's putting his eyes in Chile and what's going on
in Chile a lot, and what's going on in brew
and what's going in Bolivia because he needs that lithium
to keep making these cars. And at the other side,
(15:22):
I think there's an influence that I want to talk about.
There's a way of living the people who want to
be kind of ellen Muski uh. And it's related to
the br own boss kind of thing. It's related to
I mean, it's all in the name Musk, like it's
Musk is like the main ingredient and access the orderance,
(15:49):
like it's a full musk, like the Elon Musk, Elon Musk.
What is it? Like a name of a so case
that turns into a car, what is it? It is weird.
It is pretty weird. So weird. And by the way,
the I think in every country Land America, it's like
(16:12):
a super group of people who are into bitcoins. The
the of course is just like the worst of the
words because they have the president is like that already.
But in every country Land America, you see this group
of people and they're getting more and more power. They're
getting some traction with electoral like we have a version
of that inc So what's going on with this what
(16:36):
what is this? It's terrible, It's uh, it's something. It's
the same way are there was the Trump the trumpy
characters that are now running for presidents all over the
world that I don't know five years ago, where oh
this person is getting eleven percent of the votes and
(16:58):
eight years ago we're just a punch line. Yes, It's
like I feel like the same thing is happening with
these like do she Ellen Muskie kind of guys who
in our case right now are getting eleven percent of
the voting uh the world, yeah, um, and they are
(17:21):
selling this really kind of like, uh, I don't even
get it because I don't consume it, you know, but
I guess it's it has something to take economy. It's
not very female, it's very it's super male, and it
has it kind of has to do with that too.
(17:41):
It kind of has to do with like feminism. It
kind of reminds me of these uh conventions of guys
that get together and tell each other how to pick
up girls. M hmm. Maybe there's the same crowdy Magnolia
character total the first Musk and he was the first
Elon Musk with the kind of like God said Will
(18:06):
Smith and Hitch come on, yeah, come on, you are
a sensible man who aren't are feeling like your needs
aren't mets in this world and kind of like getting
money is a character thing. Yeah, yeah, you know, kind
of religion e based economics, economics like you believe in
(18:32):
yourself and you'll make it or COmON. People that read
people that read like uh in ap rich people's biographies
and think they're going to get rich by reading them. Yeah.
At the same time, the Latino man, I think this
is have a mix of that and at the same time,
(18:54):
because we were in a different world where we know
that there's not a lot of chances of changing your
economical situation. I think in Latin America is more of
a I'm so desperate to be rich, I'm just gonna
start acting like I am. You know, I just there's
no way I'm going to get rich because the system
is rigged against me. I'm not I mean, I don't
(19:17):
have the connections. Uh, I'm never gonna get this expensive education.
So I'm just gonna start until Yeah, I'm just gonna
start using a lot of jail and that maybe it's
gonna make me look rich. Ah, and and and these
guys really sell like, uh, some kind of idea that
(19:37):
you can get rich without being creative, talented or innovative
in any way. You just need to crunch the numbers.
You just need to like know your numbers nowhere to
put the money and move the money quickly. Uh. And
if you do that way, you'll do'll get money, you'll
be rich. Ah. But I guess Ellen Musk kind of
people may think he actually like designed rockets and designs
(20:02):
like he's like an like an intelligent engineer that invented something,
but he hasn't. He just pays for people to do
it well. That that's talent to Uh. The funny thing
is that I was reading Twitter last night. Of course
everyone was hating ELM Musk bigause Twitter is a place
that hate LM Musk or my Twitter. And uh it's
(20:23):
funny because the last couple of years, the like the
person of the year, it's been like well Trump, Uh,
then it's been like doctors, there's been like everyone in
the world. It's getting more vague every year. Actually, it's
kind of really they went back to like a person
because I think like everyone in the world is a
(20:46):
person of the year. Just everyone everyone to survive its
human Um So, I don't know if if this is
a real thing. It's kind of like it's like, is
it really a good thing? You know, Persent of the
Year is maybe because you were trending topic, the most
people were just like yeah, shipping on you, Like, um,
(21:10):
I don't know how they pick these people. It kind
of sounds paid. Could it could be? I don't know.
The only thing that I want to mention is that
in this thing doesn't matter at all. But it's funny
how in Latin America, every time a US publication, Times magazine,
the economists Bloomberg whatever, they mentioned one of our countries,
(21:34):
that became part of the debate and became like a
take to to listen, you know, we matter, we exist,
there's confirmation we're real. Remember the last time the economists
put a piece about the Chilean selection Twitter, what did
you see? What the economy is said? And in the US,
no one is reading the economists and the people who
(21:56):
really are skipping that part of the economists, they're not
reading that article at all exactly. Maybe with the with
the Time magazine, they also in the more influential people
in the world, they mentioned Lisa, she is a native
map that she's the president of the convention, and the
(22:17):
Chilean politicians decided to send a letter to to what
like I'm that Time, Yeah, Time dot com say that
he contacts They probably said that they probably send it
to like subscriptions at Time dot com, Like, I mean,
(22:41):
I think about the best of it, the best yea,
the best thing about it it wasn't Spanish. It wasn't Spanish.
They didn't even write it in English. So it's like,
oh no, it's awful, and it's really embarrassing. But the
good thing, the good thing is it's irrelevant, So no,
what you know, it's just this profound shame we have
(23:06):
about being ourselves. It is kind of crazy that we
were still, even now with everything that happened in the world,
was still like thank you the economies for mention us.
But but I really, I truly really think like we
live in this tiny strip of land just hanging off
(23:28):
a cliff into the ocean, you know, and just having
one piece of article somewhere else saying like this is
happening in Chila. It's like, oh okay, like it's real
what we're going through, Like what kind of being too
l and sometimes feels like those episodes on Lost where
(23:50):
like we were everyone was like, it's only a dream,
it's only the fact guy sleeping, he's dreaming. All of
this Internet is full of furies of what's what's chilling?
It's like it is a real thing. It's just a concept.
I don't know, we will never know. But this episodes
of but sometimes seldom Lee we are mentioned in foreign
(24:13):
publications and it feels like like were lives one of
the most beautiful sentence I ever listen and we we
we In this podcast we talked about l America. Of
course these last episodes which very chilly and heavy, so
sorry for the rest of Big Line America. But uh,
we want to say thanks to Paulo Massalas for being
(24:34):
good friend and a great comedian. You can follow her
in at bobore Cavarra. If you know Spanish, if you
know Chilean island, you will love her tweets. Uh. We
know that Steve is trying to translate her tweets every day. Uh.
I get likes from Steve a lot, and I need
to just push on the translate, but just to see
(24:56):
what he read. And it's almost always always crazy, so
they than you so much Baloma for your time. Thank
you so much everyone to listen for From the South.
