Speaker 2 (01:38):
Sixers win by six. Nick Nurse addressing the victory.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
It's really hard on him and he still had like
twenty six in the second half, and we were sending
a lot of people on a lot of bodies, and
like I said, he got some in transition, which which
you know, it's it's hard to you know, you can't
it's hard to send more bodies and then when you're
on the move like that. But just glad we hung on.
I think it. You know, it's it's games. You got
(02:03):
to go through that. Where you have leads, you lose
them in this league because of the three ball, in
offensive rebounding a lot.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
That was the other thing.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
I thought we had the offensive rebounding under control until
till the second half.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
I'm just glad we hung on to win.
Speaker 5 (02:16):
And then what did you make up Tyres being able
to at least close him out down down the stretch
of what Tyr.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Was able to do, Yeah, for sure, he you know,
he had to step up. I think he was again
and and kind of run. The team sprayed around mode a.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Lot of the game.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
But you know, the the the end, we were just
trying to get him, get him off the screen and roll.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Finally we're having a.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
Hard time getting him getting him there, and then he
you know, he obviously made some pretty tough shots going downhill,
got it and got a couple of calls tonight, which
was nice to.
Speaker 5 (02:46):
See talk about Jared's per forman team.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
Yeah, really good, very good, Like a great off the
bench performance for him, right, you know, you come in
and you need some scoring.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Off the bench. It was a tough decision.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
I'm you know, we're struggling at the offensive end.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
I was, I was.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
Really considering a lot of the fourth of putting him
back in there down the stretch, you know, just just
to give us a little just to give a little
more space for for uh Tyrese and Paul to operate,
because they were they were closing in pretty hard off
some of the other guys and you know, too too bad,
Like Yabu had some great looks and couldn't couldn't buy
(03:20):
one tonight. He was getting, you know, the recipient of
some of that spacing. But you know, it made it
made it pretty tough for those guys to navigate a
bunch of bodies to play through there in the fourth.
Speaker 5 (03:31):
He ended up putting a career high rebound total. I mean,
I'm pretty sure you were happy with dad with him.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Yeah, I mean, look at it real quick, who did it?
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Y Yeah, I mean, I know, you know that's awesome.
Speaker 4 (03:46):
Yeah, short career and again like they end up shooting
forty four percent. We had him in the thirties most
of the game, so there was some rebounds for him
to get again, I say it again, zero for six
from three to three for ten.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
He played great, right and not not really did all
the other things.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
Played, played tough, got his nose blood, he got right
back in there, you.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Know, all that stuff. So he always always brings an
effort and it seems like it was his best performance
overall this season. Yeah, it was great.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
I think it was great to see him come off
there and drill a bunch of threes, right, those are
those are those are big? You know you need you
need some guys that can look people in the eye
and pull threes, and he did that and a couple
of them are pretty big there when we needed them.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
You you always talk about like a player not being
able to shoot the ball well but still being able
to exactly Punk Storry, not being able to shot the
ball well but still contributing and finding which before Tyree's
got hot, he wasn't shooting well, but it seemed like
he was praying the ball around and fine finding guy.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
Yeah, he was playing a good game too, but but again,
when your offense goes a little dry, and he's on
your leading scores.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
He's got to get to get to work and he did.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
Yes, sir, you know every time the Hornets we're making
a round, you know, because all all the.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
Time Paul Jonson were making the difference.
Speaker 6 (05:03):
In general, how big of a difference is his.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
Presence in the team and how big of a change
is of the whole dynamic of the team. Yeah, I mean, listen,
I think when things get tough, you need bucket makers
out there, right, And he had the ball a lot
and he made some made some late. I think he
gives our guys confidence that we know, like especially Tyrest,
(05:27):
have somebody else he can kind of go back and
forth with a little bit.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
I think that I think that gives us, gives us
a lot of confidence. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Nick Nurse, the six Ers head coach, addressing the victory.
That last answer was in response to Paul George, who
did have twenty nine points in the game, and he
was really good, particularly early, and his coach said, you
got to have a guy who every now and then,
even though he's guarded and can can make shots. And
that's exactly what Paul George did. So the Sixers hold
(05:56):
off one of the big plays down the stretches we
get ready to throw it to Matt Murphy back in
Philadelphia at our flagship station. Was that open shot that
Brandon Miller missed. And again he'd been so he was
like a flamethrower in a basketball since from beyond the arc.
But he got an open look and those are tough.
That was like a mid range floater. He was open
(06:17):
and just did not, shall we say, measure it right.
And that was a costly mistake because the Sixers were
it was still, you know, a one possession game and
they were had he made that, they were able to
tie it, but he missed, and then the Sixers got
filed and were able to add to the lead. And
that was the difference they you know, that was the
cushion down the stretch. So yeah, it was the Sixers
(06:37):
in the Hornets Charlotte one four in the in the Cup.
There were other bigger games, but for the Sixers these
are huge. If they're going to claw their way back
to five hundred, they've got to win games like this.
And it was an exciting finish.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
That Miller shot that you speak of air ball the
other way, too strong over the rim, so Paul George
talked there from Nick Nurse postgame and the assembled media,
and very similar stat line for Paul George to his
game against the Knicks in Philadelphia because he ties a
Sixers season high for himself with twenty nine points. He
(07:11):
made a bunch of threes in both those games, six
for nine tonight from three. Obviously, that was a big
takeaway on the sixer side. His offense. Coach Nurse also
talked about not really playing Jared McCain in the closing lineups,
so Maxi was a big part of the stretch run.
He had thirteen points in the fourth quarter. He went
seven for eight at the line over the final minute
(07:32):
and nineteen seconds of the fourth quarter. What did you
take away from Maxi late on a night that didn't
go his way, shooting the ball from the field to
make all but one free throw for the game, Tom.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Yeah, I mean that's what like clutch winning All Star players,
you got to have a go to guy, right and
Maxi was the guy and he delivered because you know,
it's hard to get shots off and with that speed
and his ability to create separation and get to the basket,
you know, that's huge and he was able as coach
(08:04):
that he got some calls and thus the free throws
and a lot of those were kind of icing the game.
They filed him down the stretch because they had to
to try to get the ball back, but he made
him safe for the one miss and so yeah, I mean,
they're they're guarding him well tonight. It wasn't as much
maybe their defense that forced him into those early misses
(08:24):
and the and the tough shooting night overall, he just
kind of, you know, he struggled from the field a
little bit, but again, like you know, it's a it's
a great sign to be that guy. You gotta have
a guy, and he was it down the stretch for
the Sixers.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Some winning plays from Yabusele, who you spoke with after
the game too. I mean to get the career high
twelve rebounds on a night where he went zero for
six from three. Maxi was one for seven from three.
They're still staying in it. They team up for the
game ceiling play on the steal and the layup to
win this game by six. It was one ten, one
oh four Sixers the final score here on the Parks
(09:01):
Casino postgame show. After a win in Charlotte. Hey, Tom,
how many times have you seen four shot clock violations
that early in the game on one team? The Sixers
defense holding strong against the Hornets at four different times tonight.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Right, No, it's a good sign for sure, you know,
Like I liken that to football. I always call that
like a coverage sec. Right Like, it's not just one
guy getting to the passer, it's everybody, you know, cutting
off the other opportunities. And in this case, you know,
the Sixers doing a great job. We're forcing the team
away from the basket. Great hustle too, and that a
(09:35):
lot of those were you know, Yabu had the great
hustle plays and Paul George deflected at Kelly Ubrey did
a great job. That's where these deflections, and they're charted
pretty much every team at almost every level anymore is
you know, is into that, and rightfully so, because it
oftentimes forces teams to begin their offense again or it
gets him to the late clock. And that was a
(09:56):
big stat I mean, turnovers cost them big time. I thought,
how about the turnover by Nick Richards, That was just
I couldn't believe that that lazy play, you know he
was he got the ball back and it just kind
of flicked it back to kJ Simpson and the Sixers
were able to steal it. Then he fouls Maxie. I mean,
that was a costly his biggest He had a double double,
(10:17):
huge numbers in the game and with the size, and
he was such a big part of their game, and
yet that was maybe, you know, one of the biggest
plays of the game.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
So coming into this one, it looked like the way
the Sixers were going early, this might be like Detroit
on Saturday, where you could on the front end of
a back to back maybe ease into tomorrow's game against Orlando.
But credit the Hornets for battling back in this one.
And now all of a sudden, you had a hard
fought Cup game. And I was ready to kind of
(10:48):
pack this one away because there weren't as many implications
on the Emirates NBA Cup for the Sixers and Hornets tonight,
But at the end of the night, it ends up
being a hard fought game. I just think back to JB.
Bickerstaff his comments after playing the Sixers, the Detroit head coach,
about how they didn't have a lot of energy after
a Cup game the night before, and now that's what
the Sixers have to do tomorrow against Orlando and the
(11:09):
Magic as well. So how do you think that game
will be tomorrow for both the Sixers and the Magic.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
No, exactly. And Orlando has been playing so well, right,
and they won like eight of their last nine.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Games, twelve of thirteen. There you go, since the four
game losing streak when Palo went out.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Right, So now they go and then get it handed
to them by the Knicks. So both teams, you know,
having to play, that's first things. But then the Sixers,
you know, no doubt and that you know you're right
about Detroit. You know, that was like kind of a
for the current times, a landmark victory for them, that
blow out in Indiana, And now the Sixers got to
(11:48):
come back, and look, you got Orlando twice. These conference
games are huge, and Orlando's like on the rise, you know, right,
They're having a tremendous season, even in the absence of
their best player. So you got to see if the
Sixers can can do it. They had a really good
They had a lot of really good performances, including McCain
and Maxie getting it done. As we touted Paul George Yabusele.
(12:13):
You know they got enough and this is the challenge
of the NBA. You got to be able to get
up and do it again and in this case flying
back to Philadelphia to get ready for a back to back.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
One last thing for you, Tom. The East Group A
will be won by the winner of that Knicks Magic game,
which is still ongoing. But there's also a wild card
spot in the Eastern Conference. We've talked about how the
Knicks have been up big. Orlando gets the wild card
as long as they don't lose by more than thirty
seven points. Guess what their largest deficit was tonight? That
(12:43):
thirty seven points the Knicks were up by, but they've
cut it. They've cut it to twenty eight with seven
to play. But the people are watching the point differential
there because Orlando came in with a sixty a plus
sixty point differential trying to get that wild card spot.
In all likelihood, both the Knicks and the Magic will
be in the knockout rounds. But it's interesting despite the
(13:04):
wide margin there. And that's who the Sixers play twice
this week, so we'll have six Ers Magic times two, Tom,
And thank you so much as always.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
All right, thanks to Matt and shawing back at the
station that our main man here, Bob Boite Night Murph.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
One ten eighty one is the Knicks score over Orlando.
The it was one ten one oh four Sixers over
the Hornets in Charlotte and the Magic in that other game.
They're on a six game winning streak, so that looks
to be snapped before they they visit Philadelphia. Plo Bancaro.
(13:40):
His injury is a torn right o bleak. He hasn't
played since October thirtieth. They lost four games in a
row after that, and then they've won twelve of their
last thirteen since behind Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs, and then
Kentavious Caldwell Pope, who they signed in free agency, has
really come on strong. When we come back, we'll have
(14:00):
the game high leaders. We'll have the stat of the
game and the audio highlights of a game that the
Sixers took a nineteen point lead late in the third
quarter at Charlotte, but the Hornets came all the way back,
took a lead late one hundred ninety nine, but the
Sixers turn it around clutch free throws from Tyrese Maxi
(14:21):
and end up winning by six. We'll hear how it
went down with Tom mcguinness's calls. On the other side.
The Sixers won ten the Hornets one oh four. And
this is the seventy six Ers postgame show presented by
Parks Casino.
Speaker 6 (14:33):
You were listening to.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
The Sixers Radio Network presented by Jackpot City Casino.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
Sixers have won two in a row road games at
Detroit and Charlotte. They'll host Orlando for two coming up next.
It was a one ten to one oh four Sixers
win for their fifth win of the season over the Hornets,
who are six and fifteen. Sixers are five and fourteen,
(15:00):
still playing without Embiid. Andre Drummond is out for the
next few games before being re evaluated. He won't play
in the Orlando Mini Series. LaMelo Ball has been out
for the last three, including tonight, for the Charlotte Hornets,
though they have played a couple of the a few
of the top teams in the East to close games.
(15:21):
Their last three losses before tonight had been by seven
combined points even without LaMelo for the last two, so
the Sixers had a big lead in this one. Charlotte
stormed back on their home teal floor in the Emirates
NBA Cup in their purple uniforms against the Sixers in white.
(15:41):
We'll hear how the key plays from the game sounded
in our audio highlights as well. The Sixers end up
shooting for the game, end up shooting forty six point
three percent from the field to Charlotte's forty four and
for a matchup that put them against a Charlotte team
(16:02):
which is a coached by Charles Lee, who was a
Celtics champion assistant coach last year, the former Bucknell player.
He has them shooting a lot of threes, just like
the Celtics do. So it's the Celtics won at over
fifty attempts a game. It's the Hornets two coming in
at forty four plus three pointers attempted per game. They
took thirty four tonight and made thirty eight percent of them.
(16:24):
But the Sixers took forty and they went sixteen for
forty forty percent from three point range, and the free
throws got the disparity got closer in the second half,
Sixers eighteen of twenty and Charlotte twenty three of twenty
eight in the six point win for the Sixers, This
is our seventy six Ers postgame show presented by Parks Casino.
(16:48):
After the Sixers win in which Brandon Miller of Charlotte
had a game high thirty four points, twenty three of
which he scored in the second half. Paul George led
the Sixers in scoring with twenty nine, matching his season high.
Nick Richards had the most rebounds the Hornets center in
his second game back after the fractured rib kept him
out for fourteen, he had fourteen rebounds. Gershon Yabusele, though
(17:10):
for the Sixers, a career high twelve rebounds with his
seven points and the game ceiling steal that will hear
and The high assist man was kJ Simpson of Charlotte
with nine, but Paul George had eight assists with his
twenty nine points. Maxi had twenty one in the game,
second to Paul George's twenty nine. On the Sixers, Ubre
(17:34):
had fourteen points. Jared McCain had seventeen points in twenty
one minutes and thirty eight seconds off the bench the Hornets.
Other than Brandon Miller, it was Nick Richards with twenty
two points on top of those game high fourteen rebounds.
Cody Martin had twelve points off the Charlotte bench, and
his twin brother Caleb did not start in his return
(17:56):
to the Sixers rotation. It was kJ Martin that started
with Yabusele in the front court, and kJ Martin had
nine points to finish out those Sixers starters. Scoring totals
our stat of the game before the highlights. It could
have been those Charlotte Hornets shot clock violations totaling four,
(18:19):
which is a lot credit the Sixers defense. But we'll
go with Maxi's fourth quarter scoring because he ends with
thirteen of his twenty one in the fourth quarter. But
it was eleven over the final minute and nineteen seconds,
including seven for eight down the stretch at the free
throw line to help the Sixers two their second straight victory.
(18:42):
The largest lead of the game was on a Maxi
free throw to up it too nineteen points with about
three plus almost four minutes I guess left in the
third quarter, but Brandon Miller led the Hornets all the
way back, as we will hear, but we are at
the top of the hour, so before we hear the
game calls, let's pause ten seconds for station identification on
(19:06):
the seventy six Ers Radio Network presented by Jackpott, City Casino.
Speaker 6 (19:11):
Mixers, Fas Fanatic and Burlington Philadelphia, a Beastly Media group station.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
Matt Murphy on the Parks Casino post game show, Let's
hear how this game sounded? As called by Tom McGuinness.
The Sixers and the Hornets in Charlotte. The Sixers in
those white uniforms, the Hornets in purple on that teal
NBA Cup Court. Twelve different starting lineup for Philadelphia in
(19:45):
their nineteenth game of the season. It was Tyres, Paul George,
Kelly Ubra, Junior, kJ Martin, and Gershan Yabusele. Ubray had
three threes early. Paul George had a quick five in
this game. And let's hear one of the Ubre triples
because the end of the game with four made threes
(20:08):
and he was racking them up early. This one off
a play that started with a dem Bona rejection.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
The former Duke center goes into the lane Bona with
the defense at Bona, with the block and the board
a den Bona getting it done.
Speaker 6 (20:21):
For the Sixers.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
Played big minutes in the early injury in Detroit to Drummond.
Here's Kelly Ubra connecting again his third three. He's been
a standout performer this Sixers.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Lead by eight twenty twelve. Sixers lead Ubra's fourteen points
in the game, five of eight, shooting four for five
from three. He did have five fouls in twenty nine
minutes for the Sixers. Not two long after it was
the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month announced today Jared
(20:54):
McCain for an early double digit lead.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
McCaine the maxie back to Jared. He's wide open three
points shot by McCain Hey's back at North Carolina Head
he knocks it up for breeze sixties go up by ten.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
One season for McCain at Duke. He followed that up
with a steal and a score. He actually scored seven
straight points with only one Hornets basket in between, to
put the Sixers up thirty eighteen after his seven point
scoring run, and the Sixers were up thirty two twenty
after the first quarter. Similarly, on Saturday, in a wire
to wire win at Detroit, they were up thirty seven
(21:30):
twenty after the first quarter, so they held the Hornets
to twenty points. Just like the Pistons, they scored only
five fewer thirty two to twenty heading to the second quarter,
and that's where Paul George really got going. On a
night where he led the Sixers in scoring. He made
it a ten point lead again, just like McCain did
in the first quarter with a three, and then he
(21:52):
wasted no time trying another one from deep.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
Caleb martin Ow top to Gershaw Yaba sale to George.
George off the dribble, pulls up straight away, three ball,
Good time out Charlotte. Back to back trays by Paul George.
He's got eleven points, he leads all scores in the
game and the Sixers one shy their biggest lead of
the night. It's forty two twenty nine.
Speaker 3 (22:16):
So he had made it a ten point game with
the three before that when McCain did it, it was
in the first quarter. McCain ended with seventeen points, seven
of ten, shooting three for four from three, and George
was efficient as well. He ends the game with twenty
nine points, ten of sixteen, shooting six for nine from
three and three for three at the line, So six
(22:38):
threes for Paul George. That one made it a forty
two to twenty nine game, and after the Hornet's timeout,
Paul George tacked on another three the sixers. I mentioned
that nineteen point second half lead. They also had an
eighteen point first half lead a couple of times, and
kJ Martin was the one who made it that way
both times. With a dunk a Yabusele leads to Maxi
(23:02):
leads to.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
kJ Gershawn with a steal, kJ Martin getting the jam,
Maxi threw it up and Charlotte takes another time out.
Gershwan going over to some fans in the front row,
Yabusele stole that he flipped it over his head. Max
He got it and Maxi with an incredible lob to
kJ Martin.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
Maxi with seven assists, Martin with nine points. Yabusele had
seven points twelve rebounds, Maxi seven assists came with twenty
one points.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
The lead was eighteen.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
Paul George had eleven in the second quarter alone, but
the Hornets would trim the deficit to eleven by halftime.
Third quarter was scored even Lee McCain had his moments,
particularly as the third quarter went along, with eight points
in the frame out of his seventeen, but it was
an eleven point quarter like George in the frame before
(23:53):
an eleven point quarter for Brandon Miller of the home
team as he was heating up.
Speaker 6 (23:57):
Here's Brandon Miller for three.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
So he's lanky, he's got long arms, and he's able
to rise up even with the defender there. And he
did that on Kelly u Break for three, and he
could score in bunches. He's now got seventeen. Hornet's making
a seven point game.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
Miller had eleven at halftime, and he would go for
thirty plus, so we'll hear more from him. It was
eighty sixty nine sixers heading to the fourth quarter, and
early in the fourth it was Brandon Miller and Paul
George going back and forth. Charlotte cut it to four
on another Miller three, Paul George answered, then Miller, then
(24:36):
George again. We flash ahead, so they were making them
from beyond the arc and then just inside the arc.
The game was tied at ninety five at this point.
Later in the fourth, Paul George pulls up straight away
for two.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Ninety five all three minutes ago. Paul George, he's been
brilliant with twenty seven. George pulls up long two on
Cody Martin and it's good PG. Ten them sixteen. Cash
is in a long deuce just inside the top of
the cane. The sixers ninety seven. The hornet is ninety five.
Speaker 3 (25:08):
Nick Richards tied it at the line for Charlotte. Richards,
their center had twenty two points and fourteen rebounds. He
went to the line thirteen times, making ten tied at
ninety seven. Gershan Yabusele made it ninety nine ninety seven sixers.
(25:29):
But who else for Charlotte to put them ahead other
than Brandon Miller.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
Paul George up a switch guarded by Richards, six on
the shotcock. George, no, look, it's deflected and stolen. He
should have looked. Here's kJ Simpson with it out. Brandon
Miller for the lead. It's up and good. He parsing
a transition three head. Charlotte has hit the sentry marker,
leading one hundred ninety nine. George with a turnover pan
Brandon Miller with his seven three.
Speaker 3 (25:56):
He has a thirty eight point game this year with
eight threes. He came just short of those totals tonight,
the former second overall pick, but Miller had seven threes
thirty four points in the game. The former Alabama player
and Maxie was fouled twice after that, making three of
four for a one oh two, one hundred lead. kJ
(26:17):
Simpson tied it at the line for Charlotte at one
oh two, and with the game tied at one o two,
Maxi had a first attempt in which he thought he
was fouler. There was a jump ball, but it resulted
in another Sixers inbound and Maxy on the drive for
the sixers lead.
Speaker 6 (26:34):
Caleb Mark with it fifteen shoot back to Maxie.
Speaker 2 (26:37):
Maxie out top, guarded by Cody Martin drives at all
palots runner up. The winn went in.
Speaker 6 (26:41):
Maxi scores up burst.
Speaker 2 (26:43):
Down the right side. So Maxi got a hit of
steam of on the right side and scored it go
up by two. Just under thirty seconds to.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
Go, Brandon Miller floated a shot over the rim and
airball more Maxie free throws one oh six, one oh two.
Nick Richards had a dunk than Maxie was fouled again,
bringing that free throw total to seven for eight in
the final minute and change and a one oh eight
to one oh four game. And then this the Hornet's
