Welcome back to I Choose Me, the podcast all about
the choices we make, even the messy ones. So this
week I had an amazing conversation with Messi founder Ali Webb,
formerly of dry Bar. We've got some bonus messy content
talking about showing up in the world with intention and
embracing new methods for healthy and gorgeous hair. Let's jump

back in. So, say you want to be the change
in the world that you want to see in the world.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Right. I love that quote.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Okay, what are two tips about being the change? How
do you show up in the world every day to
be the change?

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Be really kind to everybody, and remember everybody is going
through something hard. Is that one or two?

Speaker 1 (00:53):
That's one? Okay?

Speaker 3 (00:55):
And what else could I say? Have self awareness? Yes?
Can you imagine if everybody was like, you know, as
someone who's like I'm sure you try. You know, travel
a ton too, and like you're in an airport. I'm
always in fucking airports and people are talking so loud
and people are standing so close to it. Just be

(01:16):
I'm like, dude, come on, he is doing Yeah, nobody
wants to hear your conversation, like be aware of what
you know. And so I think I'm shocked, literally shocked
about how people show up a lot, and I'm like,
I just don't want to be that person. I want
to be really self aware, I'm really respectful. And I
think that there is I talk about this a lot.

(01:36):
I think that there's a collective thing that happens here
where if like if you were just showing up as
the best version of yourself every day, just you, and
I was doing just me, and you know she was
doing just I was like everybody was just doing their
little part of being kind, gracious, self aware, you know,
seeing the best in people. Like what a better world

(01:58):
we live in. It's like people hold on I do
this morning meditation every day. That's like holding onto angers,
like holding onto a hot coal. You know, it's like
poisonous to you. Not every you know, it's like you're
you know, you're harming yourself. It's like yeah, you know,
but but then there is the collective piece of it
that like if you weren't doing that, how much better

(02:18):
the world would feel?

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeah, that's very powerful.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Part of your new brand is the rough, dry mass, Yes,
kind of the opposite idea of the blowout, which there's
certainly still room for sometimes, like you said, share what
the rough dry method is.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
And how to do it.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
So basically, it's like you get out of the shower,
you've just washed your hair, towel dry your hair, throw
some rough dry, messy cream in it. Then I put
it in before I comb out my hair, comb out
my hair. Then I kind of tussle my hair with
my fingers. I use a blow dryer just with my
fingers and the blow dryer no diffuser, no diffuser, okay,
just to get the moisture, like the moisture out of

(02:58):
my hair, to get it to to get it to damp. Okay,
it's not soaking wet. It's damp right, right or not?
You know, it's towel dried. Then it do stay away
from your roots. I stay away from my ends.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
I do. I'm sorry on my roots, I said, you mean.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Yeah, because like for me, and this is not the
case everybody, but I have very curly roots, so I'm
using my fingers to kind of stretch out my roots
so I don't get a lot of curl in my room.
So I think when you're a curly hair girl, that's
kind of the problem. But if you don't have that,
then you can just kind of rough dry everywhere and
you kind of get you learn how much is too
much and how much is too little, and you kind
of have to play around with it a few times.

(03:30):
I feel like and then you know, I always say,
I want my hair about thirty to forty percent dry,
so it's still very damp, so it'll still hold and
be pliable because it's still a little wet. So you
can still like manipulate the hair with more rough dry cream.
And I just take my hair and twist it all
around my head, which takes me literally three minutes if

(03:51):
even that.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yeah, I did it today walking around my house.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
Like go and if you have more, do more twists.
If you don't, it's fine. And if you have, like
we were saying before, if you have straighter hair, get
it to that point and then clip it up and
then do your makeup and get dressed and have coffee
and do all the other stuff. And it let it set.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Oh that's like the old school, like set the hair,
set the hair and let it rest and see what happens.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Oh, that's so good.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
And the thing is, it's trying twists. Yeah, if it
dries in the twists, it stays in the twist, and
so it dries in this like twist, and then once
it's completely dry, you don't want to touch it till dry.
Once it's completely dry, then you get your fingers in
it and open it up and it's it's set in
the twist. So that's almost like setting your hair, you know,
and so you don't get the frizz. And that's the

(04:33):
thing about the ref Ji cream too. It's very anti frizz,
so you're getting yours really helping eliminate frizz.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
I love it. It's it's actually so sort of freeing.
It is very free. Yeah, very free.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
I mean that's the thing for me. I'm like, what
used to take me an hour to get ready? I'm like, oh,
if I'm gonna And I by the way, I don't
even wash my hair every day. I'll just take, you know, water,
Like today I didn't wash my hair. I just take
water and like scrunch it.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
How many days can you go without washing your hair?

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Probably like three?

Speaker 1 (05:00):
Yes, yeah, I love that.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
And then and then but the days that I am
like washing my hair, I'm like, oh, it'll take me
four minutes to get to do my hair. It's very free. Wow.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Yeah, I love that.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Okay, so the world is pretty messy right now. I
mean you think it's always pretty messy, but right now
especially two things you do each and every day to
get yourself up out of bed and living a productive
life even in the messy times.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
So I would say ninety percent of the time. I
feel like it's hard to be one hundred percent and
I just got to give yourself a little Yeah, but
I really try to. Like I'm not a super religious person,
but I do, Like in the morning, the first thing
I try to do before I do anything get on
my phone is like thank God for another day. That's

(05:49):
like my little mantra in the morning. And then you know,
i'd be lying if I said I did this right away.
I will check my phone, which I wish I.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Didn't being a business owner.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Yeah, it's like all the things I look on my
phone right away. But then I'll look at my phone.
I'll be like, okay, I'm good, there's nothing I need
pressing here. Then I'll do like a morning meditation. I
have like two or three that I use inside timer.
Sometimes I do it when I'm walking my dog. Sometimes
I do it when I'm still in bed.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
I don't.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
I kind of don't prescribe to like I have to
be sitting with my eyes closed to meditaty, which I'm
sure some people would come after me for that. But
I like this. I like to I like to make
my coffee. I love walking my dog. I walk my
dog like endlessly several times a day. And I but
that's the first thing I do in the morning is
listen to them like a gratitude meditation.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Gratitude is the key.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Gratitude is the key.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Okay, if someone has a business idea but they're not
sure they want to run a.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Business, yeah, I can't say I'm blame you.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
What would you say?

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Are the things a person has to have to be
an entrepreneur two or three? You know, on top of
having a great idea, Like, what are the things that
it takes well?

Speaker 3 (07:04):
I think you have to recognize what you're good at
and what you're not, like where you need support and help,
you know, I mean in Drybar, I wasn't the CEO,
my brother was until we brought on like a real
CEO and so so like knowing your strengths and weaknesses,
you know, and allowing you know, also like if you
have a business partner, you can't both be doing the

(07:26):
same thing. You know. It's like right, whether someone's you know,
it's just I think that's when you run into problems
with partnerships and you know, so is that like designate Yeah,
it's like I heard the analogy once it's like five
year old's playing soccer. Everybody's kicking the ball.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
It's like it's not getting the ball in the net.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
No, it's just chaos, right, So I think that's the case.
You know, it's like, you know, bringing people who are
good at what you're not recognized back to self awareness.
Recognize what you're good at and what you're not you know,
and allow for me And this was real learning with
especially with dry bars, like allowing other people you know,
to take the ball and run and allowing them to

(08:07):
make mistakes and knowing that they're going to make mistakes
and that's how they're going to learn and they're going
to get better and not always having to be in control.
I also heard somebody say once that as the CEO
of a company, you know, there's this like old school
like you're the CEO, you're the boss. Everybody kind of
like channels up to you, which is true on some level,

(08:29):
but I think it's like I think of like I
should be serving my team as the CEO, you know,
like I serve you my team. What do you need
from me? How can I support you? You know, just
kind of flipping the script on that, you know, And
I think that that creates a much better work environment
where people feel empowered and they want to work hard
for the company and the brand, not that they're scared

(08:51):
right of you, right yeah, which by the way, I
was very scary in the drybar Ara. I mean that
was the thing. My brother came to me and said once.
He was like, you know, everyone's scared you. And I
was like, first of all, I was like, what are
you talking about? You know, like a total raging bitch.
And I was like, oh right, you know, and I
don't and I can go back to that place if
I'm not careful, you know, of like just being like

(09:13):
very shrewd and very like kind of back to like
the decisiveness that I have that I'm just like, what
are you talking about? You know, instead having to be
like wait, let me listen.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
Hear them out.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
Yeah, I've had somebody's tell me before that people were
scared of me and it really impacted me.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Yeah. It doesn't feel very good, and it completely contradicts
the other thing I just said of like have self awareness.
You know, it's like be kind, be good, you know,
and I just really want to be kind and good.
You've developed that though, Yeah, I did develop that because
it's confusing when you're young, because you're like I was like, oh,
I want to be a badass, like I want to
be like I know everything. I don't want to be

(09:52):
like that anymore.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
No, it's exhausting.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
It is exhausting. It's it's yes, it's like riddled with stress, yeah, worry.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Yeah, and you're carrying everything yeah, all the time and
you don't really have to right. Okay.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
To end our bonus episode, you talk about not getting lucky,
but getting intentional. Give us your elevator pitch or getting
intentional for saying, today's day I'm going to choose me
and make this happen. What would you how would you
tell someone to do that?

Speaker 1 (10:24):
Today's the day?

Speaker 3 (10:25):
I think people, I think there's like the get out
of your own way, you know. I think a lot
of people get stuck in the Like I was just
having a conversation with somebody about this, like the you know,
analysis paralysis and like kind of what we're talking about.
It's like, I don't know, I'm afraid to make a
step because I'm afraid it's going to be the wrong one,

(10:45):
you know, versus like just take action. And you know,
it's like, don't let perfect stand in the way of progress,
you know, just go, just do it, Just take the
leap of faith, you know, and figure out the game
plan later. You know. I think that that is that's
kind of always. I'm definitely a fly by the seat
of my pants kind of girl, and like figure it out,
you know, in the air, you know.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
Not do you like to jump into the deep end?

Speaker 3 (11:10):
I don't. I don't like to jump. I don't like
the minutia. I don't like I don't like details. Like
I'm not very detail oriented, which may be a shocking
to people, but I'm just like somebody else deal with
the logistics. I'm a big idea. Here's the vision, Here's
how I see things going. I don't want to be
in the weeds, I don't, you know, And I know

(11:30):
that and I'm not good in the weeds. I'm terrible
with details. I can't tell you how many like flights
I've booked wrong on the wrong date because.

Speaker 1 (11:38):
I put myself in and out on the same day.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Oh my god, that all the time. And it's just
like my brain, it's just like I've got a blind
spot there. But I'm aware of it. So I keep
people around me so that I don't do things like that,
you know. And and for my business, speaking of intentionality,
like if I were in charge of a lot of things,
there would be there have a lot of fuck ups,
you know, And so I bring on people who make

(12:01):
sure they're you know, they're checking that stuff right.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
So you say, you think surrounding yourself with people that
are smarter than you or better than you had certain things, and.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
People that compliment you, you know, people that are.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
Like, I get your vision. I like your vision too.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
Yeah, and I want to support it and help build
it and grow it.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
With you, you know. Yeah, that makes all the difference, it
really does.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
And and team is everything. You know, if you don't
have a team that respects you, wants to be in
it with you, you're that's not fun.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
No, that sounds lonely.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
Yeah, and scary, scary and bad and it's just it implodes.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
And yeah, it doesn't sound as rewarding as if you
would take.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
It right with and like I love my team, Like
I have such a cool fun. We have so much fun.
You know, it's such a great team.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
And how many people do have on your team right now?

Speaker 3 (12:48):
Pretty bit ten? So more small.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
Yeah that's a small team. Yeah, but everybody's doing their part.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
Even you know, it really lends itself to like we
all really know each other. There's you know, there's a
lot of camaraderie, there's a lot of fun, which is like,
if it's not fun, what are you doing?

Speaker 2 (13:02):
Elevator pitch complete? That's that's the key. If it's not fun,
what are you doing? Oh my gosh, thank you so much.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
This was so fun. I could do this all day.
