Speaker 1 (00:06):
The Minnesota Vikings got blown out on Sunday night football
against the Detroit Lions at Detroit, a game I predicted
the Minnesota Vikings to actually win because I didn't think
the Detroit Lions defense could stick with the Minnesota Vikings offense.
And I was wrong. You know, it's okay to be wrong.
(00:30):
Nobody's one. So even though the people that want to
mock me in the common sections, you can go ahead
and do it. That doesn't bother me, but you act
like you've never been wrong before. The difference about my
wrong and you're wrong is that I'm publicly stating that
I am wrong, and I'm publicly making declarations of my opinions. Anyways,
Minnesota Vikings lose thirty one to nine, And even though
(00:54):
it was a blowout, and even though there was reason
to be concerned during this football game because of how
the offense performed in the red zone, I am actually
very optimistic about the Minnesota Vikings moving forward for several reasons.
The number one reason why I'm optimistic about the Minnesota
(01:17):
Vikings is that it wasn't three and out, three and out,
three and out. Punt punt, punt, punt, punt, interception, interception, interception, fumble, fumble, fumble.
It wasn't a situation where the Detroit Lions stopped the
Minnesota Vikings from getting first downs. It wasn't a situation
(01:37):
where the Minnesota Vikings defensively were just getting torn up
the entire game. The Vikings got into the red zone
a bunch of times, and they did move the ball
on the Detroit Lions. It don't get to the red
zone as often as the Minnesota Vikings do without the ball.
(02:01):
And even though Donald's performance wasn't spectacular by any means,
the Minnesota Vikings still got to the red zone four
times and got within the ten yard line multiple times.
The problem that happened, which wasn't really by anything that
(02:23):
the Detroit Lions did. The problem that happened is that
Donald got happy feet. Donald decided not to throw to
Addison wide open. Donald decided to miss Justin Jefferson wide
opening in the end zone multiple times. Donald decides to
miss Hogginson wide open several It was one of those
(02:45):
situations where Donald played so bad that the Minnesota Vikings
Hophins could not overcome that. And it wasn't a matter
of the Lions' secondary was so tight and so good
and so elite. Their front seven was good. The Detroit
Lions front seven was good, the blitz was good. They
were getting at Donald, but it was more a case
(03:08):
of Donald just not completing passes. Is eighteen for forty
one to one hundred and sixty six yards, zero touchdown,
zero picks, two secs for twenty four yards and loss,
a seventeen point four QBR and a fifty five point
five passer rating. I think it's more a cause of
(03:31):
Donald just not hitting his spots or even attempting to
throw to the spots that it should have hit. I
love what Kevin O'Connell said following this game, because on
the surface, the Minnesota Vikings, they lose this game. It's
thirty one to nine, all crap, all hell is freezing over,
(03:52):
the season's over, They're gonna go to LA, They're going
to lose. But in the Kevin Seafort article of ESPN,
there's a quote that I want to read from Kevin O'Connell,
and that's so accurate. It says we didn't do a
lot of the things that we have consistently done all
season long. This game could have looked differently in the
(04:12):
end very easily with one or two more plays down
in the red zone being successful. The way that works
with momentum and the way that works for the energy
of your whole team. Donald was a play away from
(04:33):
hitting Justin Jefferson wide open. It was a misthrow. Donald
had Addison Whyde open multiple times in the red zone.
Free three is going to be coming back soon, didn't
throw in the football. Donald had Justin Jefferson on the
first fourth down attempt in the red zone, and he
(04:56):
just missed him by a hair. These are all situations
that were so close to being the opposite way, and
it goes back to the margin for error. It is
so slim. And even though the Vikings lost by twenty
two points, this game was not reflective. The score was
(05:18):
not reflective of just how competitive and just how close
this game actually was. So I don't think that it's
doomsday for the Minnesota Vikings. I don't think that this
necessarily means they're gonna go to Los Angeles and put
up nine points again and get clobbered by the Los
(05:38):
Angeles Rams offense with Stafford and Nakula, Cooper Cup and
they're good running back Kyrine Williams. So don't overreact. Don't panic,
because there was a lot of correctable mistakes by the
Minnesota Vikings in this football game, particularly in the red zone,
(06:01):
and this stat from OPA stats on x really describes
this game perfectly for the Vikings. Take a look at this.
Four times reaching the red zone but not scoring a touchdown,
three times having goal to go but not scoring a touchdown,
two failed fourth and goal attempts, one missed field goal.
(06:26):
No other team in the past thirty years has done
all of that in the same game. So what that
tells me, of course, that's bad, But what that also
tells me is the Minnesota Vikings were so historically bad
that it's actually good. There's no way they are going
(06:46):
to replicate this port performance again against the Los Angeles
Rams because it hasn't been done in thirty years. So
there's actually a lot of hope in that terrible statistic.
They're not gonna do it again. It hadn't been done
in thirty years. So things are actually looking quite positive.
(07:11):
And I'm not trying to be a homing hearer that
people call me anti Homer. People have called me a
Packers fan because of some of the objective opinions I've
had about the Minnesota Vikings, particularly their celebration following their
win against the Green Bay Packers last week. I said
(07:32):
it was overboard. I said, quit acting like you won
the super Bowl after a regular season win versus the Packers.
And I'm gonna go back to that right now. My
mantra is always and it's a cliche, but it's my mantra,
never too high and never too low. The Vikings got
too high last week. They got too high last week.
(07:55):
They're throwing Donald up on the shoulders. It was the
shot of the year of Donald getting soaked, being you know,
crowded by his teammates and them being all excited and stuff.
And my first reaction was, you don't see Brady or
Mahomes or the greats doing that stuff. They're antie that stuff.
(08:19):
They saved that stuff for the big party, the super Bowl,
And here the Vikings are celebrating like they just won
the Super Bowl. How you looking now? It got too
high last week, and same thing this week. I'll say
the exact same thing. Don't get too low. You lost
to the Lions, but you were so historically bad that
it's not gonna happen again. It's not gonna happen again.
(08:42):
You don't go to the red zone and get to
the three, four five yard line as many times as
the Minnesota Vikings do and not confert a single touchdown.
That never happens. You know, I guess the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Donald was bad three picks near the red zone, but
(09:04):
he wasn't like the Vikings were not the two or
three yard line. It's not like the Vikings failed to
convert from the two or three yard line four times
in a row. No Cam Akers gets tackled on a
fifty eight yard run, and my first thought is, all crap.
The Vikings haven't scored in the red zone all day
and now they gotta do it. This is not good.
So the Vikings are not going to put up a
(09:26):
poar performance like this again, and Donald will not stink
this bad against the Rams. And Kevin Seffert had this
sentence to open up his ESPN article, the same article
that I just quoted from, and it says this, the
Minnesota Vikings and quarterbacks Sam Donald in particular, picked the
(09:48):
wrong week for their worst offensive performance of the season.
Now I'm gonna disagree with that. First premise of Seaffert.
The wrong week to have the worst offensive performance of
the season. If the Vikings won, this game would be
during the bye week. Not done bye week would be
(10:10):
during that first week of the playoffs. Following the bye week,
Vikings hosting a home playoff game versus whomever would be
at Bake Stadium. That would be the worst week of
the season to have your worst offensive output against some
NFL team. This is actually a pretty good solid week
(10:32):
of the season to not play well. Get it out
of your way, get it out of your system, get
the crap out of there, and get ready for a
playoff runt. I would have have it right now, then
in two weeks from now or next week against the Ramps.
I don't think it's as bad as everyone's saying it is,
(10:55):
because there's no way the Minnesota Vikings are going to
put up this horror of a performance again this season.
It hadn't been done in thirty years, and it's not
gonna happen again this season. So a couple of other
statistics to look at. Cam Makers six carries sixty five yards,
Aaron Jones ten carries forty five yards, and the receiving
(11:18):
corps thanks to Sam Darnold, Jefferson three catches fifty four yards,
Naylor three catches fifty three yards, Aaron Jones five catches
thirty yards, Josh Oliver two catches for sixteen yards, TJ.
Hawkinson two catches for nine yards, Cam Makers two catches
four yards, and Jordan Addison one catch, zero yards. Six targets.
(11:41):
Stuff happens, and this is one of those situations where
I will say, do not get too low. Minnesota Vikings players,
you got too high last week. Stay in the mid.
You have the chance to get too low this week.
Stay in the mid. Stay in the middle, find the middle,
(12:01):
don't get too crazy, don't get too down. Don't buy
the most expensive thing, don't buy the cheapest thing. It's
my motto. Stay in the middle, stay centered. And that's
what the Minnesota Vikings need to do this week, because
they will bounce back and they will respond against the
Los Angeles Sirams. I'm optimistic about the Minnesota Vikings moving
(12:26):
forward despite their worst performance of the season, because there's
no way they can do that again. I guess that's
the take. Thank you for watching this episode, and thank
you for making this podcast a part of your day.
