Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Good morning everyone, and welcome to Morning Run. It is Friday,
December twelfth. I made me robot staring across a very
surprised TJ.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Holmes, I'm disturbed. I'm looking at my AURA sleep score
from last night. It's a forty four.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Ooh, that is an F minus.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Okay. I was wondering. Just a short time ago. I
came and said, man, I don't know what happened. I
just hit a wall and I'm yeah, okay, makes sense.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
How long did it did you sleep?

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Two hours and fifty minutes. It says fifteen minutes of
rim sleep, forty eight minutes of deep sleep. All right,
So now it's a party. So now it's a party.
Good morning to you all. First up, I certainly hope
y'all had a better night's sleep than I did. Welcome everybody.
I am TJ. Holmed. It is Friday. We have made it.
We woke up, saw some snow, a little snow on
the ground out there is that snow out?

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Yeah, it was snow. It was exciting, just a little
dusting this little.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
We gotta get a little more here in the northeast.
This cold front still making its way across, bringing to
some places, ices some places, and headaches to all places
for the most part. But wherever you might be, hope
you are having a good morning. As always, top right
corner of that Apple podcast app on that screen our
show page. It says follow click that button you can
get our updates, and we will. We expect to have

(01:15):
a couple of updates on a couple of big stories today.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
And there are a lot of court cases that we
are following Brian Walsh of course among them. We are
expecting potentially just about anything could happen in the courtroom
today as closing arguments are taking place. Speaking of court cases,
Letitia James, Yeah, there's a big headline there, Sharon Moore.
We have all eyes on that courtroom to figure out

(01:40):
what the heck he may be charged with. The accused
Charlie Kirkussassen was in a courtroom instead of just via
satellite imaging, and Luigi Mangioni also his pre trial court
hearings continue.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
We'll have updates on all of the above.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Plus this morning, hundreds in quarantine because of the measle.
The last words of a death row inmate in Tennessee,
Lululemon needs a new CEO, and Indiana defies Trump and
y'all in.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Trouble twenty one Republicans specifically rub all. Right, first up,
we are yes going to be keeping a very close
eye on the Brian Walsh trial.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Today.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
The jury will be getting their instructions to begin their deliberations,
but not before we hear closing arguments from both the
defense and the prosecution.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Yesterday we just heard arguments. They weren't closing. They were
arguing over the jury instructions and what what words should
be in there. And yes, the defense rested its case
without putting on a single witness, including Brian Walsh, who
officially told the judge you, no, I will not be testifying.
So this is it. Trial was supposed to go three weeks.
It's only been two, three or four.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
They said even maybe four and a half. We thought
maybe we'd be into the new year and Christmas would
be well, at least slightly problematic for a lot of jurors.
But turns out they got this thing going quickly. Now.
Our legal expert, who we've been talking to throughout this
trial thinks that the prosecution rushed the case and that
might be to their detriment.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
We will soon find out, all.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Right, continue on the run here on this Friday morning,
two police officers who were at that McDonald's during Luigi
Mangioni's arrest testify to his pre trial hearing yesterday. This
has been going on almost two weeks now. But the
key issue here is whether or not the first search
of Luigi Mangioni's items was an illegal search.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Yes, so Mangioni's attorneys are trying to get that key
evidence that was found in that backpack tossed out. They
claim it was an illegal search because they say there
was no warrant for the search, and they claim he
was not read his rights.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Now, police say the search was legal. They did not
need a warrant.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
He provided them a false name, so they needed to
figure out who he was. These hearings that we've been
seeing go on now for more than a week are
expected to continue into next week, as is the case
because this is such an important hearing. It will literally
make or break the prosecute case.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Yes, well, we don't expect a ruling on that till
some time in January from this judge. But enough again,
it will continue into next week as we continue on
this morning run, Tennessee executed Harold Wayne Nichols last night
for a crime he committed nearly thirty seven years ago.
This was the nineteen eighty eight murder of a college

(04:21):
student there in Tennessee. Karen Pulley was her name. She
was twenty years old.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Yes, and by the way, Nichols fully admitted to the crime,
admitted to actually raping several other women on campus, and
said he would have continued to do what he was
doing if he hadn't been caught. Now, his attorneys fought
his execution initially because they said that he would be
and I guess now he is the first man in
the state of Tennessee to be executed for a crime

(04:48):
he pleaded guilty to. He admitted to, and they were
using that as a reason for asking for leniency or
at least to stay his execution and put him in
life in prison, because he was not only admitting to
the crime, but expressed remorse for it.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
His last words to the people I've.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Harmed, I'm sorry. To my family, know that I love you,
I know where I'm going to. I'm ready to go home.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Always interesting to see final words in several we've seen
this year people didn't have anything to say, sometimes just
said no or didn't utter a word, but he had
something to say. But what are we up to this
year in the country?

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Forty forty seven I believe forty six forty seven, we're
pushing fifty.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
But again, that would be the highest number of executions
in this country we have seen in a decade plus.
Continuing on the run here, now, this is terrifying to
think of. Yes, Robes, Yes, we're talking about Macy's. A
woman was stabbed in Macy's. Now we are talking about
the Macy's that everybody knows, their flagship store. That really,

(05:52):
in a lot of ways, Ropes is the centerpiece of.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
Christmas miracle on thirty four Street.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
In this city. But I random act on the seventh floor.
A woman was found there, stabbed, had several stab wounds
in her back. The scary thing roll up. They're calling
this a random, unprovoked attack. Don't know what happened, why
they don't know each other? They say, both of these
women are from out of town.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
That is so Friday.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
I actually have chills from head to toe because I
have been in that may SE's so many times with
my daughters shopping for Christmas presents.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Those old Yankee escalators going up, yes, you know, and
anyone who's visited New York probably went there because of
the famed miracle on thirty fourth Street.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
And yes, during Christmas time they go.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
All out Thanksgiving parade they stop right there is that's
the same thing.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
So the a forty three year old woman has been
arrested on attempted murder charges. You know what's scary too. Look,
all of this is frightening.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
It happened at three pm, three o'clock in the afternoon
when people are there.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
I'm sure she was Christmas shopping or looking for a
Christmas outfit for a Christmas party or a holiday party.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Anyway. The victim is thirty eight years old. Thankfully she's
in stable condition. But my goodness was that is a
frightening story, all right. Next up on the run, former
Michigan football coach Sharon Moore expected to make a court
appearance today.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
And this is going to be.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
An interesting one because he's been held since Wednesday and
we don't know what he's being charged with yet. There's
been talk about an assault, there's been Frankly, as we
see often when we don't get real concrete information from
police or from the university, everyone fills in the gaps
with rumors and so yes, if you go online, you

(07:33):
will see all sorts of stuff about what he may
be charged with and why he was fired.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
And like you mentioned, he's been held since Wednesday. Wednesday
was a hell of a day, a hell of a
few hours for him. He was fired by the University
of Mission. They say he had an inappropriate relationship with
a staffer. Don't know all those details. But then just
hours after he was fired and this came out, police
were called to apparently an assault that was taking place,

(08:00):
and he was taken into custody. He's been in jail
since then. Now the university has been clear to the
campus community and they're saying if anybody out there has
any more information, they've given a hotline. So this could
have more legs to it, even but this is an
awful story for those kids, for that team, for that university.
This is one of the most important brands in college football,

(08:21):
the University of Michigan.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
Yeah, and you know, the people have been going through
his social media accounts. They have been trying to connect
the dots. I was thinking about his wife and his
three young daughters. This has got to be so difficult
for them. She was even involved. His wife was with
police and trying to get him. They were worried about
him having suicidal thoughts and she expressed that to police.

(08:42):
So this is devastating for the campus, it's devastating for
the more family, and we hope to get some more information.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
Thirty eight.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
He is so much younger than I thought. When I
saw that, I was shocked. I thought, my goodness, he's
a young man. He had such a bright future. Really sad,
all right. Next up on the run, the man charged
in the assassination of Charlie Kirk was in a courtroom
for the first time yesterday. We've only seen him beforehand
via video making court appearances.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
You know, I didn't realize that it makes sense. Twenty
two year old Tyler Robinson's who were talking about here.
He was in shackles. He was also in street clothes.
They had actually argued over this, and his attorneys wanted
him to be able to come in street clothes and
he was. He had family members there as well to
support him. But Robes, this is actually hearing they're having
that it's not necessarily about him and the crime. It's

(09:34):
about whether or not we the media going to get
access to the trial. Wow.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Yes, And so attorneys on both sides want to limit
the media access, so they want to actually ban cameras
from the courtroom. Obviously, this story and this assassination has
provoked so many other difficult moments in this country for
people who have strong opinions about Kirk, about his assassination,

(10:01):
So it makes sense that they want to bring down
the temperature when it comes to this trial.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
And you know who wants cameras in there, Yes, missus Kirk.
Erica Kirk has said she want, Hey, my husband got
assassinated in front of the world, in front of cameras,
then we need to see this.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
I mean, she makes a good point.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
It makes it a very good point. I'll continue on
the run here. Now, if at first you can't indict,
try try again. The Justice Department tried for a third
time to indict New York State Attorney generally Titia James Aka.
Well they say perceived political enemy of President Trump. Perceived
is what folks like to say. But you know who
we're talking about. But yeah, they tried a third time

(10:39):
and once again a grand jury has said no. She
has been indicted previously on charges of lying on a
mortgage application, but the first case was dismissed because the
prosecutor was appointed unlawfully. They tried to reindict again, a
grand jury said nah. So they tried again with another
grand jury in that one yesterday, same thing, refused to indict.
Don't know if they're going to let this go.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
If you're a James, you are feeling so empowered, You're
just like, are you kidding me?

Speaker 3 (11:05):
What else are you going to try?

Speaker 1 (11:06):
Now?

Speaker 2 (11:06):
If you've got two grand juries who refuse to indict,
let's put this to rest.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
Okay, all right?

Speaker 2 (11:12):
Next up on the run, Well, the state of Indiana,
and specifically the Republicans in the state of Indiana have
gone against President Trump. The Republican held legislature voted against
redistricting the governor. The Republican governor spoke out against it, like,
I'm with Trump, y'all are crazy.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
You're going to be in trouble.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
It could have given Republicans two extra seats, and this
would be continuing to fulfill the mandate President Trump made
to Republican states, Hey, we need more seats come midterm elections.
We need to keep our power in the halls of Congress.
And you know, twenty one Republicans that's significant said no.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Yeah, they better go against him as a group.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
That's true safety and numbers.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
Possibly. Of course, the President went off about this on
social media last by last night, and it was essentially saying,
We're coming after you all in primary races potentially next year.
He wants MAGA primaries in the spring. So but you
know what, quite frankly, give them credit. This jerry mandering
we shouldn't be changing. I mean, I think generally we

(12:18):
are all on board that we shouldn't redraw every couple
of years just to give ourselves an advantage. Supply.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Look, this isn't about Republicans or Democrats, because both sides
have done it, and one in connection with the other.
But the point being is no, of course that's not okay.
Of course that is manipulating our our political system. Well,
so shocking, isn't that what all policy? You cast yourself?
Why am I shocked?

Speaker 3 (12:42):
I forget it. This is just politics as usual.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
But for once, at least, it seems as though a
group of people banded together and did.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
The right thing.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
We shall see. Yah, there's shake Sally continue on the
run here now. As expected, two healthcare bills failed in
the Senate yesterday, one from Republicans the other from Democrats.
Both were supposed to be upon fix to those expiring
health care subsidies, you know, the very issue that led
to that record government shutdown. So what happens now? Insurance
premiums are going to go up January first, and they're
going home over Christmas. This is where we are. The

(13:12):
numbers say, twenty million plus Americans are going to be
impacted with some significant increases in their health care cost.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
That's tough.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
That is not the news that a lot of folks
needed to hear after the government shutdown. And now our
healthcare premiums are going up because y'all can't get on
board the same plan.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
That's tough, all right.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
Next up on the run, hundreds of people are in
quarantine in South Carolina because of measles, two hundred and
fifty plus. Most of them are children. This is These
are staggering numbers. One hundred and eleven new cases of
measles in just the past two months. Most of them
have been traced back to exposure from one church. People

(13:52):
have also said Thanksgiving caused a lot of this to
all the family gatherings people all got together. But the
vaccination rate in the county, this isn't what they call
it upstate South Carolina. It's like Greenville, Spartanburg area is
only at ninety percent.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
Well, and you say, only now if you don't know
and you hear that the vaccination rate is ninety percent,
it sounds.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
Good, yes, but anyone who studies how disease is spread zurologists,
et cetera, you need a ninety five percent number. That's
the number at which they've determined. When you have ninety
five percent vaccination rate, you prevent outbreaks. When you go
below that, you are inviting the potential for outbreaks. And
the concern is too that these types of viruses can mutate,
so it starts spreading from person to person. Yes, most

(14:34):
of us are vaccinated, but there is a concern that
these viruses they can mutate, so it's it puts everyone
at risk.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Well, folks, stay with us here on this Friday morning run.
When we come back, they sell one hundred and twenty
eight dollars running pants. But they need a CEO we'll
tell you what's going on over there at Lululemon. Also
coming up time, it's always a big announcement. They're person
of the Year. This year it's per Sun's and it's
kind of a bunch of them. Also Saturday night, it's

(15:05):
a big night. Could make a very merry Christmas for
you if you win that billion dollars to stay here.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
Welcome back everyone to our Friday morning run. And next
up on the run, the CEO of Lululemon is stepping down.
His name in case you don't know it, Calvin McDonald.
He's been CEO since twenty eighteen. But the problem is
Lululemon isn't having the kind of year it has wanted
to have in sales. There has been a thirteen percent

(15:40):
decrease in profits, although I have contributed handily to it
as I've been purchasing holiday gifts for my daughters, et cetera.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
That's crazy, though, it's I guess they're gonna have to
increase the prices on some of those.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
Payings please now they're already outrageously expensive.

Speaker 3 (15:55):
Maybe that's part of their problem.

Speaker 1 (15:57):
You know, it does leave a lot of people out.
You remember Chris made that joke about Lululemon, Like the
Lululemon has this anti hate campaign is like, oh, yeah,
you hate somebody, you hate poor people because you're selling
one hundred dollars.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
It's totally true. It's I wish there were one hundred dollars.
They're more than that.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
And you know what, every time we love our outlet
shopping and we talk about it a lot, but the
line when you have like a big shopping day to
get into Lululemon, because people who want to get their
they're hoping for discounts, right, That's the only way they
can get Lululemon is to get it at an outletter,
to get it on sale because it is ridiculously overpriced
and they have big competitors.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
It's quality stuff.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
It is, I mean, there's a reason why everybody likes it.
Is it Worri and a Loo. They're also saying these
are two brands com really pushing and upcoming, and now
that's kind of become all the trend. You're starting to
see those brands and so they've got a competition. Younger, yes,
I always see like what Sabine has on, like, oh
that's the next new thing she loves as.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
I will continue on the run here now time has
just announced it's person up the year I didn't remember.
I think I remember last year was Trump. I don't know.
The year before was Taylor Taylor Swift. I actually did
not remember that one. But this year Rose. Does this
make sense to persons of the Year and the group
they picked?

Speaker 2 (17:10):
It's kind annoying, you know, I don't like it, Like then,
could then always have persons of the Year. Why it's like, oh,
we don't want to pick just one, make a decision.
And I know that they had other people on the
list that I think actually would have worked, like Pope
Leo that make the first American polic People talked about
how that could have been a really good choice.

Speaker 1 (17:29):
They don't announce like runners up And who else was
other finalist.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
Or there were some I think it came from the
folks at time who was also on the short list
who they were considering, and among them.

Speaker 1 (17:41):
Had to be Trump again.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
Trump was absolutely on the list on the short list.

Speaker 1 (17:45):
He Swift had to be again. She had a huge year,
does she not.

Speaker 2 (17:47):
I'm trying to see where I found the list of
folks who were potential and I thought, oh, that would
be good.

Speaker 3 (17:53):
Of the Travis Kelsey please know.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
But I I'm just going through all the they made
that lines are funny, but no, have you even said, yes,
the persons of the year. I guess it makes sense.
Architects of AI is what they say, the architects of AI.
And they have a bunch of CEOs on a picture
on one of the covers kind of lists. So it's
not just one, but there's several folks of these big
tech companies. I think Elon Musk is among them.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
Yeah, he's already been the Time Person of the Year
before as well.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
I have some of the other people who are on
the list. It's actually interesting.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
So Poplio, Donald Trump, Benjamin Nett, Yahoo, and so I
can never say its first. Yes, those were the people
who were also on the list of potential persons of
the year.

Speaker 1 (18:40):
We should rank them. I mean AI has just been everywhere.
It's exploded and this was a big year for it.
I guess that kind of makes sense. But it is
impacting every part of our lives in good ways, in
medium ways, and in negative ways. We've had lawsuits with
people upset over AI technology using the killing their kids.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
Or killing their kids. Yes, yes, the Chad GPTs.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
All of it is. But yeah, it's been a hell
of a year for AI. But when I first wrote
this story in here is that Time person of the Year,
and then I put in parentheses lame. That's how I started.
Oh no, I just wanted one. I get it, I
get it, I get it.

Speaker 2 (19:12):
I liked the photo of them, that iconic photo of
them sitting on the whatever that is a crane or
something over New York City. The beam, the beam, Yes,
so that was kind of cute, But I also just
felt like it was a cop out.

Speaker 1 (19:25):
Okay and Time, we love you. I don't know why.
We just wanted to be one person. What they picked
makes sense, it does He does anything have a bigger
year than Ai, anything, even Taylor, even Mom, Donnie, nobody
had a bigger year. Net and Yahoo Time knows they
would have.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
Oh that would have been a problem, a problem, Yes,
all right, all problems go away with money, right, I'm told, Well, everybody,
get in line for your Power of Ball ticket because
the drawing is tomorrow night and one billion dollars is
hanging in the balance.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
And that's just in case you want to know. If
you take the cash option is four hundred and sixty
one point three million.

Speaker 2 (20:07):
Yes, tomorrow is not guaranteed. Yep, get that money today.
Let me tell you if you got the winning lottery ticket,
how long would you wait? When people wait like weeks
to go and and cash it in, I would literally
go the next day or like that moment we.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
Had a winning ticket. Yes, oh sorry, this would be
we would sign off on this podcast.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
I would be so afraid that I lose the ticket.

Speaker 1 (20:28):
Oh this is done.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
People will hold onto it for weeks and get their ducks.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
Ducks.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
It's fine, but no, no, no, no, I'll get my ducks
in a row after the fact.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
Just give me the money.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
Okay. So even I'm dealing with folks as we go
about your weekend, a lot is going on a lot
of stress with the holidays, last couple of weekends, right
this weekend and next.

Speaker 3 (20:46):
Two more weekends.

Speaker 1 (20:47):
So you got you've got yeah, not much time, So
swear I have your quote of the day. It's a
little longer. But this is a fun one. Okay, okay,
this is a fun one that I got off the
wall of a couple in New Mexico when I went
to do a story that is a true story. And
here is the quote. Life should not be a journey
to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in

(21:09):
an attractive, well preserved body, but rather to skid insideways,
body thoroughly used up, totally warn't out, screaming, WHOA, what
a ride.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
It's one of my favorite quotes.

Speaker 1 (21:20):
I love this.

Speaker 3 (21:22):
We should put it on our way.

Speaker 1 (21:23):
That's a picture of it from their house.

Speaker 3 (21:25):
I love that.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
I mean, I'm creepy I taking pictures of somebody.

Speaker 3 (21:29):
I like the wood wainscoating that have.

Speaker 1 (21:31):
But it is. It's just a reminder where it's okay
go at the end of your days, don't you want
to say, geez, I went for it. We went nuts.

Speaker 2 (21:42):
Nobody wants to be on their deathbed saying man, I'm
so glad I played it safe. No, of course, you
want to live in all caps LV.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
Not dangerously, but live and with that, folks, we always
appreciate you taking some time with us. And remember this
is not a journey to the grave with the intention
of arriving safely in an attractive, well preserved body, but
rather to skid in sideways, body, thoroughly used up, totally
worn out, screaming whoo what a ride, and folks, have
yourself a wonderful, wonderful Friday on t J.

Speaker 2 (22:14):
Holmes and I'm Amy Robach. Have a great weekend everybody,
and we'll run with you soon

The Brothers Ortiz

The Brothers Ortiz

The Brothers Ortiz is the story of two brothers–both successful, but in very different ways. Gabe Ortiz becomes a third-highest ranking officer in all of Texas while his younger brother Larry climbs the ranks in Puro Tango Blast, a notorious Texas Prison gang. Gabe doesn’t know all the details of his brother’s nefarious dealings, and he’s made a point not to ask, to protect their relationship. But when Larry is murdered during a home invasion in a rented beach house, Gabe has no choice but to look into what happened that night. To solve Larry’s murder, Gabe, and the whole Ortiz family, must ask each other tough questions.
