Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Hey there, everybody, welcome to the Morning Run. On this Wednesday,
November thirteenth, it is World Kindness Day. I'm TJ. Holmes.
Please be nice today.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Today, of course, on this day, I will be kind
to you. And also on this day, everybody, get yourselves
out to Krispy Kreme Donuts. Participating stores are offering free
donuts glazed donuts to the first five hundred customers in
honor of World Kindness Day. Just a little maybe that'll
put a little extra pep in your step. Today on
(00:37):
today's run, we are talking about a stunning move by
President elect Trump. He has picked a Fox News host
to fill one of the most critical positions in US government,
Secretary of Defense.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
We also got a word of several more key appointments
in the new Trump administration, including a brand new role
for Elon.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Musk, and decision delayed. We will have to wait a
week to hear whether Trump's felony convictions will stand.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Also, while the US government has banned all flights to
one particular country for the next thirty days, also forty
two million dollars for their suffering former detainees at the
infamous Abu Grab prison, win big in court, and.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
You might want to go find a quiet place in
the office today to enjoy People Magazine's newly named sexiest
Man Alive. I loved that writing, TJ. Good one.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
All Right, well, folks, we're going to get to that
in just a second, but we will start on this
run this morning in court. Will President Trump still be
a convicted felon by the time he takes office? Well,
we expected to get that answer yesterday, but we'll have
to wait at least another week. After the judge overseeing
Trump's New York criminal trial delayed a ruling on whether
(01:51):
his conviction should be set aside.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
So now the Trump has been elected president, his legal
team wants the case and the conviction dismissed, but they
were requested a stay on the decision to consider how
to proceed given his new status, and the prosecution agreed,
and so the judge allowed a week's delay for each
side to provide their positions to the court. So now
they have until ten am on November nineteenth.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Trump spokesman said that the election results make it abundantly
clear that Americans want an immediate end to the weaponization
of our justice system, including this case, which should have
never been filed.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Trump was convicted back in May on thirty four felon
accounts related to hush money payments to adult film star
Stormy Daniels. Trump has denied any wrongdoing, and certainly this
is the only case that got to the point where
he was convicted. He has four other cases that now
are in limbo and potentially most legal experts believe will
be dismissed or at least paused until after he is president.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
This is interesting that these are such unprecedented times that
you have a case here this high profile. The prosecutor,
the defense, and even the judge all said, you know what,
we need a little more time to go over this
because it is it's unprecedented, it's complex, and the Supreme
Court and his victory have thrown this all up in
the air.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
And what's remarkable about this is we were going into
unprecedented times because President elect Trump was about to become
the first president who is a felon, who is convicted
of multiple felonies. Now that might not even happen. He
might enter office without a record, without a criminal record.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
After all that. Well, folks on this Wednesday. We're going
to continue our run now and stop me if you've
heard this one before. A Fox News host, a Baptist minister,
and Elon musk All walk into a bar. It's not
actually the start of a joke. It is the new
Trump administration, which continues to take shape after a flurry
of major and in some cases pretty surprising announcements yesterday.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
How about we start with the biggest shocker of them all.
And this one really threw everyone off a bit and
certainly surprised them. Trump has chosen Pete Hegseith as his
Defense secretary. A lot of people are saying who Hegsith.
He has been the host of Fox and Friends Weekend
on Fox News for several years now. He's a Princeton
and Harvard graduate. He served in both Iraq and Afghanistan
(04:11):
and has been an advocate for military veterans. But his
selection is certainly raising eyebrows and some concerns based on
his lack of experience in running a bureaucracy, in any
kind of policymaking, and in any type of global affairs.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
His name was one that wasn't out there, wasn't being
floated publicly as a possibility, and his selection reportedly came
even as a surprise to those close to Trump. He
has long been considered an advisor and loyalist to Trump.
Trump said of him, Heig's Seth is a tough, smart
and a true believer in America. First, with Pete at
the helm, America's enemies are on notice, our military will
(04:50):
be great again and America will never back down.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
The question now, can he be confirmed by a Republican
controlled Senate. If so, so, he will be the head
of the largest department in government and in charge of
the most powerful military on the planet. The stakes are high. Also,
everybody was wondering what role Elon Musk would play in
the new Trump administration. Well, that has been answered. It's
(05:16):
actually going to be a brand new role.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah. Trump announced that his billionaire buddy would head a
new department that's called the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk
will head the newly created department with businessman and former
GOP presidential candidate Quebec Ramaswami.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
In making the announcement, Trump said this, together, these two
wonderful Americans will pave the way for by administration to
dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and
restricture and restricture, FED restructure, my apologies, restructure federal agencies.
There are going to be more details to come on
(05:55):
exactly how this department would run, and how much authority
and oversight it will have, what checks and balances will
be in place. There's a lot of questions. But I
think a lot of folks who maybe don't appreciate some
of the excess spending kind of at least like the
sound of this new government agency.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
And those who like the status quo don't necessarily like
the sound of this new agency. Trump also announced that
former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee would be his ambassador to Israel.
Huckaby is a Baptist minister and has been a staunch
advocate for Israel.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
Yes. Trump called him a great public servant who has
been a leader in faith for many years. He went
on to say that Huckeby loves Israel and the people
of Israel, and likewise the people of Israel love him.
Mike will work tirelessly to bring about peace in the
Middle East. Huckabee, by the way, has never served as
an overseas diplomat but he would play a crucial role
(06:47):
in helping Trump fulfill one of his big campaign promises
to end the war in Gaza.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Huckabye did serve though, as governor of my home state
of Arkansas from nineteen ninety six to two thousand and seven.
Ran for president in two thousand and eight and twenty sixteen.
His daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is the current governor of Arkansas,
and you'll remember her as well as Trump's White House
Press secretary.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
All right, let's move on to another appointee that was
just announced. Trump has named former Texas Congressman John Ratcliffe
as his new CIA director. Ratcliffe served as the Director
of National Intelligence in Trump's first term, and Trump has
said that he looks forward to Ratcliffe becoming the first
person to serve as both in the country's two highest
intelligence positions, saying this that Ratcliffe will be a fearless
(07:32):
fighter for the constitutional rights of all Americans while ensuring
the highest level of national security and peace through strength.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
We were starting to get little trickles of names over
the past several days. Some of those names not necessarily surprises.
A lot of those were loyalists. Some people didn't like
maybe some of the selections, but this was the one,
and this was the day that really threw everybody. What
is going on with the Defense secretary? That is a
very critical, critical role that a lot of people are
(08:02):
scratching their heads about the selection of a Fox News host.
Some are saying, you know what, I'll wait and I'll
hear what the guy is about, and others are already
getting their ammunition ready to go after him during any
Senate confirmation.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Here, yeah, I think the best way to describe most
of Trump's appointees so far has been non traditional and
certainly unexpected.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
All Right, we'll stay with us here on this Wednesday
morning run. When we come back, the FAA says no
flights from the US can go to one particular country.
Next up on our Wednesday morning run, the FAA has
(08:44):
banned all US flights to Haiti for the next thirty days.
And this comes after three planes were shot at while
they were trying to land or take off from the
airport there in Port A Prince.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
Yes, the Spirit Airlines plane flying from Fort Lauderdale had
to be diverted after it was hit with bullets while
trying to land. Then a Jet Blue flight taking off
from Haiti headed to New York was also hit by
a bullet. They didn't even realize they had been hit
until after they landed, and an American Airlines plane was
hit by gunfire as well, but it was also thankfully
able to land safely in Miami.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Even before the FAA banned these flights, Jet Blue and
American Airlines had already made the decision that they were
suspending all flights to Porta Friends and the government has
one has warned there is gang violence there and they
are trying to disrupt travel, including air travel, And sure enough,
some of these flights have been fired upon. So they're
saying you cannot go there. You should not. They actually
(09:38):
told American citizens, we cannot guarantee your safety pretty much
anywhere in Haiti.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
That's right, all right. Next up on our run, a
jury has awarded former detainees at a Rock's infamous Abu
Greb prison forty two million dollars. The three former detainees
were apparently subjected to torture terrible conditions at the prison
while they were held there twenty years ago.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Remember this prison in that name Abbugray. It was the
prison that gained notoriety when photos of the tortuous treatment
of detainees became public. Some photos even showed US soldiers
smiling and posing alongside prisoners who were being subject to
this mistreatment.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
The three detainees in this case first filed suit back
in two thousand and eight, and they testified to sexual
abuse and beatings at the hands of interrogators at the prison.
The judgment is against the defense contractor in this case, CACI,
that worked alongside the US military at that prison.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Now, several members of the US military had already been
held responsible, convicted, even sentenced to jail time for their
roles in what happened at that prison, but this is
the first time that a civilian contractor has been held liable.
The contractor says it plans to appeal this jury decision.
By the way, those three men in this case were
(10:53):
eventually released from the prison and no chargers were ever
brought against them.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
It is remarkable that that all happened twenty years ago
and we're still talking about it.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
You can still see those the images, those pictures, everybody
there are just imprinted in our brains. We'll never forget
those part.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Oh certainly, all right. Well, next up on our run
People magazine has finally revealed who their Sexiest Man Alive
for twenty twenty four is, and it's John Krasinski. The
forty five year old actor, director, producer, husband and father
who's known for his clever, comedic mind, had this to
say upon hearing the news, immediate blackout, Actually zero thoughts.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
We know Krasinski. It was the prank loving paper salesman
from the office. But then his career took a turn,
and a superstar turn, you could argue, when he co
wrote and directed and then starred alongside his wife of
fourteen years, Emily Blunt in A Quiet Place, And then
there were two sequels that followed that he also wrote, produced, directed,
(11:53):
and Start in If that was released earlier this year.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
Yeah. Despite his very busy career, Krasinski says, you gotta
love this. He prefers being a husband and a father
to his two daughters with Blunt, ten year old Hazel,
eight year old Violet, and he loves bing in a
good Netflix documentary at home. He said his wife Emily
was very excited when she heard the news. She even
joked that she was going to cover their home with
the People magazine cover. I doubt that actually is gonna happen,
(12:20):
but Krazinski believes his new title is going to force
him to actually do more household chores, saying, quote, after
this comes out, She'll meaning Emily will be like, all right,
that means you're going to really earn it here at home.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
You know what. I bet she will cover the walls
with those People magazine covers. You know, she's maybe a bathroom.
She's one of my fit you know, oh, my favorites.
But I love this selection. I think it might have
thrown some people off a little bit because it doesn't
necessarily go in line with some of the selections over
the years. But what did you think of it?
Speaker 1 (12:53):
I thought it was perfect because he's smart, he's funny,
and he has such sweet story. I love their love story.
They've been married for fourteen years. And this is what
he said about his wife when talking to People magazine
about being the sexiest man alive. He said, it's that
beautiful thing where when you're married to someone, you're constantly
(13:14):
learning and changing and evolving, he says, and I am
so lucky to go through all that with her. And
I think any woman hearing him say that about his
wife after fourteen years being married to her. Yeah, that's
pretty damn sexy.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Well, and it doesn't you think about the sexiest man
you think of immediately Some stud I mean, forgive the
term there, but some heart thraw or someone like that,
but they've over the years had the like So I'm
not saying he's not a stud not good looking, but
a Paul Rudd or a John Legend. These are brilliant
guys who aren't necessarily leading men when it comes to
(13:50):
just their physical appearance, and so I like these picks.
John Krasinski is brilliant, brilliant, and from everything I see
with him and his wife, he seemed like a good
due And you never know everything, but these are folks
who root for and I just always appreciate and respected
him going from what he was to what he is.
And this is sexy as hell. I love this.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Oh, I agree, like I truly, a six pack to
me doesn't equal sexy. It's I mean, it's his mind
and his heart and he has both of those in check.
So bravo to People Magazine for their pick.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
And we're not saying he's not attractive just because he's
smart in these other things.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
But those other things make him more attractive. That is
the truth.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Go back last year, Patrick Dempsey and Chris Evans, Paul Rudd,
Michael b Jordan, John Legend, Idris Elba, Blake Shelton, Dwayne Johnson,
David Beckham, Chris Hemsworth, Adam Levine, Channing, Tatum, Bradley Cooper,
Bryan Reynolds. Wow, that was the list over the past
number of years. And you know some of those guys
are seen.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
As just carthrops. Yeah. I think that's a nice mix though.
I think that's really cool.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Not to say Dwayne John's is not smart as well,
but he's got big muscles.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
Okay, he's got it all. He's got it all.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
All right.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
We'd love you to consider this as you go about
your day. Maybe I should read this because I picked it,
and it might require a little bit of an explanation.
I got this from a cartoon, but it kind of
surprised me. When I read through it.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
I got chills. I had a physical reaction to this. Okay,
so here is the quote of the day. Which is
more important, asked Big Panda, the journey or the destination?
The company replied, Little Dragon, I love that.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
I've actually heard that, but I don't know what story
it's from, but I've heard that before and it's a
great one, and it's sometimes it's the it's so poignant
and so simple, like oh, duh, yeah, that is. It
doesn't matter where we're going, what we're doing. I've said
this before to you, doesn't matter. If you're with me,
we're good.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Yeah. It's oh, it's so special. It just puts the
whole purpose of life, or at least the point of life,
is Companionship is love. That is what matters. It's not
where you're going or what you're doing, it's who you're
doing it with.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
So I love that folks consider that as you go
about your day, what's more important the journey or the destination,
Actually it's the company. And with that, have a great Wednesday,
a great World Kindness Day, and I hope you have
good company for whatever you are doing today.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
I'm T Jail and I'm Amy Robock. Thanks for running
with us.
