Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast. Good
morning everyone, this is your Morning Run for Thursday, April
twenty fourth.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
I'm Amy Roboch and I'm TJ. Holmes and on the
run this morning. We're open all night. The Vatican makes
a late night decision to keep the doors of Saint
Peter's Basilica open throughout the night because so many people
have come to honor Pope friends.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Andrama is already building at the Vatican as cardinals gather
to begin conclave to pick a new pope in the
coming days. A cardinal deemed ineligible to vote says he's
gonna anyway. Well, how is that going to go down?

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Also this morning, more drama between President Trump and President Zelenski,
with another war of words between the two leaders. Plus
President Trump is facing another lawsuit. I really wish we
could tell you this one is different, But to be
honest with you, you've heard it all before.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
And here's one way to get our nations declining birth
rate up. The President is reportedly considering paying women a
bonus to have a baby and a possible end to
the trade war and no trash talking. The Fed chair
has sent stocks Hire for the first time in days.
Let's see what today breaks.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
And also on this morning run, how polluted is the
air you breathe? We have the annual list of cities
with the cleanest and dirtiest air. Get this, five of
the worst ten cities are all in California. And dreams
will come true. Tonight the NFL Draft is happening, and
for the first time, it's happening in one of the
NFL's most storied cities.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
It's gonna be another late night tonight, it is all.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
It don't start until eight o'clock Eastern time tonight. But
it's fine.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Yeah, that's just our bedtime.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Oh yeah, all right, our problems are wake up time.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
We'll figure it out and we'll get to all of
that in just a moment. But we begin our run
this morning in Rome, where Saint Peter's Basilica stayed open
throughout the night to accommodate thousands of people still waiting
in line to pay their respects to Pope Francis.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Yeah, the Basilica was supposed to close, admit, however, the
Vatican made the decision to stay open to make sure
that the large crowd that had gathered was able to
see the Pope's coffin. Vatican officials finally and briefly closed
the line at six am local time, only to reopen
it at seven am. To have it right, They only
did that to do a cleaning. Correct, they would have

(02:18):
kept the plays open.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Yes, and the Vatican said already forty eight thousand, six
hundred people have been able to view the Pope's body
as of this morning. And what's really cool, we're watching
the live feed right now. They don't rush people. They've
allowed the crowds to take a moment, to take their
moment when they finally reached the Pope's coffin, to neil,
to genuflect, to pray, to even take a photo. It's

(02:40):
been pretty awesome to watch.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
It's good they're allowing it, and everybody there is being
respectful of the next person in line behind them. They're
taking their moment, but they're not taking too much. This
is really well and we're watching it live as we're
talking to you on a live feed they keep inside.
The cameras of the basilica is just gorgeous. And the music,
the sounds, everything.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Soft chanting going on, and it really is. It is
beautiful to witness not just the people, but the architecture
of the whole feeling you almost feel like you're there
with them.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Then after the Pope's open cask, it was moved to
the Basilica. In that stunning and somber procession throughout the
Vattican yesterday morning, the line that form seemed to quickly grow.
Some people were talking about a few hours way then
we started hearing people were waiting five, then to eight hours,
that's how long they were waiting to view. The viewing
hours are set to end at midnight again tonight, but

(03:29):
we see they will change on the fly if they
need to. And then they're supposed to be open tomorrow
until seven pm, so they're going to schedule at least
to close early tomorrow night.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
That's right, to prepare for the funeral. Pope Francis's official
funeral set for ten am local time on Saturday. It'll
happen in Saint Peter's Square, where President Trump and First
Lady Milania will join leaders and dictaries from around the world,
and of course the world will be watching to honor
the pontiff.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
And I had to be in your mind as well.
But this is of course for mid of Queen Elizabeth
her death. Yes, and we were there in London Ford
and see those lines, and you have to correct me
if I'm wrong. I swear those lines got up to
fifteen plus hours that people were waiting. Yes, and Ques there,
but it was the same type of thing. People got
a moment, they were respectful, and then they kept it moving.
So this is just it's incredible to watch if you

(04:16):
get a chance.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Yes, it's it, definitely is. It kind of sets the
tone for your day too.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
But next here on our run though a different type
of story related to the Vatican. Yes, the conclave to
pick a new pope is still a couple of weeks away,
but the drama has already started. A standoff is potentially
brewing between the Vatican and one of its disgraced cardinals.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becchu claims he has the right, as
a member of the College of Cardinals to participate in
the conclave and to vote for a new pope, but
he might find that a conclave keek card has been
deactivated because the Vatican has this particular cardinal listed as
a non elector.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Why would that be the case, because Cardinal Betchu lost
his rights and privileges as a cardinal for his role
in a Vatican financial scandal back in twenty twenty. He
lost those rights and privileges after Pope Francis pushed for
that to take place. Now bet you. Was then later
convicted in the Vatican Criminal Court in twenty twenty three,

(05:21):
the first cardinal ever convicted by that court. Wow.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
So he was sentenced to five years in jail. But
his appeal is pending, and so he's been allowed to
keep an apartment at the Vatican while that appeal is
going through. And while he lost his right and privileges,
he is still technically a cardinal.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Yes, So the Vatican has him listed as a non
elector not supposed to participate, but he plans to be
at the conclave. He plans to vote. How do we
know because he's telling us this. Actually gave an interview
to a newspaper and said there is nothing in writing
or otherwise that explicitly says he can't participate. What is
going to happen here? I don't know. He's a one guy.

(06:02):
Can he really be out there banging on the door
let me in? What is he going to do?

Speaker 1 (06:05):
I don't know, but it will be interesting to find out,
and we will stay on top of that developing story.
But in the meantime, next up on our run, President
Trump gave a lengthy, detailed update about the peace talks
to end the Russia Ukraine War, and unfortunately, it does
not sound like things are going so great.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Yeah, this is a strongly worded statement by the President.
He's accusing the Ukrainian President Zelensky of prolonging the killing field.
This was prompted after Zelensky was quoted as saying that
Ukraine would never recognize Russian occupation of the much debated
region of Crimea. He essentially drew a line in the
stand saying this is a non starter. And that's what's
set off President Trump.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
And yeah, you said set off because President Trump did
officially respond with this on social media, and we are
quoting him here. It's inflammatory statements like Zelensky's that makes
it so difficult to settle this war. He has nothing
to boast about. The situation for Ukraine is he can
have peace or he can fight for another three years
before losing the whole country.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Yeah, statements made by Zelenski today will do nothing but
prolong the killing field. By goodness, gracious, this is all
the President's worth here. President goes on to say that
nobody wants the killing field to continue, says, we are
very close to a deal, but the man with no
cards to play should now finally get it done. I
look forward to being able to help Ukraine and Russia

(07:26):
get out of this complete and total mess that would
have never started if I were president. Through that in
for good mess.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Yeah, that's on brand. The administration has signaled frustration lately
with the lack of progress and the peace talks. The
Vice President Vance even suggested the US could walk away
from the process. There was a meeting schedule to take place,
and we know that Rubio Secretary of State Mark Rubio
pulled out, which deflated the whole hope that perhaps something

(07:53):
could get done. So we will see. But yeah, not
looking great right now.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
All right, we will continue here on this Thursday morning.
In several states have now joined forces and decided to
take their own shot at ending Trump's trade war. They're
doing this new thing. That's all the rage. They filed
a lawsuit. Yeah it's not now all the kids are
doing it.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
But all the kids are doing it, you're right. And
a dozen states as well. A dozen states New York, Colorado,
Illinois among them, are now asking a court to block
Trump's tariffs. Why or how do they think they can
do that. They claim that Congress, not the president, has
the power to raise tariffs, and that what the president
is doing is actually illegal.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
So yes, this is a similar argument, or the exact
same argument. But yes, a similar argument made in a
similar lawsuit filed by similarly pissed off groups who could
be impacted by Trump's tariffs. California, remember they filed their
own lawsuit over the tariffs, And then there was a
group of businesses I think just in the past week
or two, filed a lawsuit claiming and making these exact

(08:53):
same statements and accusations about the president. And the White
House responded with this, saying, once again, Democrats, that's our
prioritizing a witch hunt against President Trump over protecting the
safety and well being of their constituents. We mentioned a
dozen states. You probably could guess this is not a
bipartisan lawsuit. These are all Democratic attorneys general who are
doing this.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
Makes sense, all right? Next up on the run, how
does a baby bonus sound to create a baby boom? Well,
Apparently it's under consideration at the White House. President Trump
told reporters yesterday that giving a five thousand dollars bonus
to every American mother after she gives birth. Quote, sounds
like a good idea to me, idea to you? Uh sure?

(09:35):
Why not?

Speaker 2 (09:35):
Sure? Why not?

Speaker 1 (09:36):
I mean no, I'm joking. It seems bizarre. You get
a push present from your husband or from the baby daddy.
I understand that, but a push president from the president
seems a little weird.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Well, it seems like every woman, that anybody that goes
through that process should get a reward of some kind
at the end. Yeah, it feels like a little.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Bones of something from your husband or your partner or whomever.
From the president. It's weird.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
She doesn't want to push for what are they.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
Called a push present?

Speaker 2 (10:03):
A push present?

Speaker 1 (10:05):
Yeah, a push present.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Okay, what's the vacation thing is?

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Oh, it's a baby moon bay. You go out on
vacation before you have the baby so that you can
have one last exciting romantic trip before the baby comes.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
Sor arrey you all. I got a little off track.
I had a few questions. But back to this five
thousand dollars bonus, This is one of many proposals that's
being pitched to the White House to get more Americans
yes to have children. White House spokesperson Carolyn Levitt went
on to say that while the President hasn't made any
final decisions on this matter, he is proudly implementing policies
to uplift American families.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Yes, White House officials said Trump has already created policies
to promote families, recognizing that more babies do need to
be born in the United States. They point to his
executive order that aims to increase the access and affordability
of IVF. And remember, just last month, Trump told reporters
he will be known as the fertilization President. Those are

(10:59):
his who.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
Gives out, not mine. Push gifts, push president, push presence
from the President. Now, it remains to be seen if
he's actually going to do this, and if he's he'll
be responsible for financially incentivizing a baby boom in this country.
This is an interesting one. This will get certainly the
tension of a lot of people. What I don't know,
I don't know how you pay for it, but the idea,

(11:21):
just the idea every woman that has a baby here
this will help you get started for this, so that
I mean.

Speaker 1 (11:26):
I get that. And the number of births are typically
declining by two percent a year on average. This is
at least for the last several years. So there's a
reason why he would like to see more Americans born.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
All right, we'll stay with us folks here on this
Thursday morning run. When we come back, you might finally
start to look at your portfolio again. Things seem to
have gotten a little night yet, just for a couple
of days. Also coming up here, it is going to
be a big, big night. A lot of grown men
are going to be crying. And you need to hear
the list of the cities with the cleanest air and

(12:00):
the dirtiest there California. Don't miss this. All right, welcome back.
Let's keep running here now, and we are looking at
the possibility of a full week of gains and the
stock market possibility.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
Okay, possibility. We'll take that, especially given the volatility and
on some days flat out nosedives the market has taken
with all of the uncertainty around the trade war. All
three major indices were up yesterday, the Dow gaining four
hundred plus points. The Nasdaq was up two and a
half and the S and P was nearly up two percent.
I just like saying the word up because we haven't

(12:43):
been saying up very much.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
So why are we up? Well, A lot of folks
will tell you a few things happened. One President Trump,
he's signaled more of a willingness to ease some of
the trade tensions. Also, the Treasury Secretary suggested that there's
a big opportunity for a major trade deal. And then
the President also stopped talking at least stopped talking about
one person in particular, the Fed chairman. Of course, he

(13:05):
was bashing him, and every time he did, the stock
markets took a dive. So we stopped doing that. Said
he wasn't going to fire him. That was a big deal.
And all those things believed to have come together at
least settle markets a little bit.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
Still haven't looked at my portfolio yet, nah, next up
on the run, Well, the next story almost wants to
make you hold your breath. Apparently, nearly half of us
live in cities that received an F in air quality
in the American Lung Association's annual State of the Air Report.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
Deal The group says in twenty twenty five, one hundred
and fifty six million Americans are breathing in unhealthy levels
of smog and soot. Ugh, right, where do we rank rooms?
But yes, we have a lot of people wondering about
your city. The six year in the row, though, six
year in a row, the worst air was in the

(13:55):
same city. Yep. Oh, come on, Baker's Phil we gotta
do better. Yes, Bakersfield, California number one on the bad list.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
Yeah, and the city with the cleanest air Casper, Wyoming.
And that makes sense. It only has eighty thousand residents.
It's in the Great Wide Open, so not a lot
of plants polluting the air in that area. So good
for you, guys, Casper, Wyoming. Here are the list, or
here is the list of the top ten cities with
the worst pollution. And yes, we tease this, half of

(14:25):
them are in California. Experts say extreme heat, a lack
of precipitation, and those wildfires all play an increasing role
in worsening air quality. So Bakersfield, California number one? Is it? Visalia, California.
I don't even know how to say that city's name.
I hope I didn't ruin it. Fresno is next, number three,
number four, Eugene, Oregon, number five, La, number six, Detroit,

(14:50):
number seven, San Jose, San Francisco, number eight, Houston, number nine, Cleveland,
and number ten Fairbanks, Alaska.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
And then you mentioned the clean it's number one. There's
a tie at the top between Casper and Honolulu.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
Both you say Honolulu, someone.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
From there Honolu. Really someone from there once say it's
it's Honolulu, say Honolulu years ago.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
And I just noticed that.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
Somebody's probably gonna correct me now and said that wrong.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
So good luck with the next one.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Kyle Louis. We should know that because I spent time there.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
Oh, I didn't lucky you well.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
And then we got boz in Montana, beangal Main, Anchorage, Alaska,
Saint George, Utah, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, and
in Wilmington, North Carolina. Those are your cleanest cities. And
these are cities that don't have major population centers.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
Do they Uh No, And that makes a lot of sense.
I've been to some of these places, and yes, they
are a little bit more remote and therefore they have
cleaner air. The American Lung Association points out there are
serious health impacts when we're talking about this air pollution.
It can lead to premature death, causing asthma, heart attack, strokes,
lung cancer, you name it. You can go to their
website to find out where your city ranks. And yes,

(16:03):
I check New York. We got an F. Really, yeah,
we got an F. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
Why?

Speaker 1 (16:09):
I mean, have you ever cleaned your windows in your apartment?

Speaker 2 (16:11):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (16:12):
Yeah, that's all you need to see. It's black, it's black.
It can't wait to run today on the West Side
Highway breathing all that air?

Speaker 2 (16:23):
Do I tell them where we're going to be. Sorry,
I'm kidding. I'm kidding. Final leg of the run here
on this Thursday morning. And what a night we have
to look forward to. Yes, folks, flashy suits and big
dudes crying tears of joy. It's Draft Night. The twenty
NFL Draft is happening ten.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
Night besides the Super Bowl. This is the biggest event
that the NFL puts on each and every year, and
it's happening in one of the NFL's smallest cities, Green Bay, Wisconsin.
And this will be the first time Green Bay has
ever hosted a draft. It starts tonight with Round one
and it goes on through Saturday.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
Yeah, Oprah. The next three days there going to be
seven rounds, two hundred and fifty seven players selected. Tennessee
Titans get the first pick, followed by Cleveland, New York,
New England, and then Jacksonville. So it's all you know,
if these kids and their families have been working at
this their entire lives, and then sometimes you just it's
not just about they're about to get big checks and
millionaires and all this stuff. This is a big family

(17:20):
moment for a lot of these guys, and it's always
exciting to watch. The outfits are always exciting to watch.

Speaker 1 (17:25):
I know. So I think I just I've never really
watched it until we got together, and it's been really fun.
I remember each year we've been sitting down and it does.
It's emotional, it's fun, it's exciting. You love seeing the
proud moms and dads and simply it's just it's it's
a feel good moment.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
And even if you're not into it, I suggest watch
the very beginning, so see the top picks. That's exciting,
and then watch the end on Saturday, the last round
and see who gets picked as mister Irrelevant. It's the
last guy picked in the NFL draft. So whoever's picked
number two hundred and fifty seven this year, he's going
to be known forever as mister Irrelevant because he's the

(18:02):
last guy and nobody's supposed to care about him, and
he's the underdog kind of a thing. So they started
calling the.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
Dead that's cool. I didn't know that, Yes.

Speaker 2 (18:09):
So if you that's an interesting one. Look for the
first guy in Alaska?

Speaker 1 (18:13):
All right, sounds like fun. I know what we're doing
this weekend, Well, we would like you to consider this
as you go about your day today. It's our quote
of the day for this Thursday.

Speaker 2 (18:22):
Do not set aside your happiness. Do not wait to
be happy in the future. The best time to be
happy is always now.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
Ain't that a good reminder because you're always like, when
I get this, when I get here, when I get
to vacation, when I finally finish this project, when the
kids finally we all say that's when I'll be happy,
and nah, do it now. So once again, here is
your quote of the day. Do not set aside your happiness.
Do not wait to be happy in the future. The

(18:52):
best time to be happy is always now. And with that,
thank you. For running with us. Everyone I name you
Robots Jones have a very happy day.
