Speaker 1 (00:01):
And That's what you Really missed with Jenna and Kevin
and I Heart Radio Podcast, Welcome back her buddy to
a very special episode of and That's what you Really missed?
Do I say that every week? But this one feels
special because it's a celebration, really, the celebration of miss

(00:22):
Amber pe Riley Um winning yet another competition show. We
want to give her her credit because she worked her
ass off on the Mass Singer and we wanted to
just just shower her with goodness because she it's what
she deserves because she won as the harp and you know,
this is like, this is what she does, this is

(00:44):
this is her bread and butter, this is where she thrives,
and so it was just so great to watch her
literally just be and do what she does best. That's
the way I see it. And also, you know, talk
about how she did have the best training ever being
Uglee doing covers, so she got to go on a
show and do more covers. That's right. And she reminds

(01:05):
us that she did record that opening, that weird opening
for Glee that one day we're gonna We're gonna get
for you guys, We're going to find it. Yeah, Um, well,
should we get to this very special episode of congratulating
Amber Riley. Yeah, and before we do, if you haven't
seen her perform on The Mask Singer, do yourself a

(01:26):
favor and YouTube that. Just look up those performances. Look
up harp. Unbelievable. Yeah, she was the harp and she
does incredible renditions of everything, so many different genres. It's
pretty unreal. And I mean from the moment we heard
her seeing when we were rehearsing for the Pilot in

(01:46):
two thousand eight, we all felt that. And it's nice.
I think that the public is reminded of that every
couple of years that we have one of the voices
of our generation here and so like you know, apause,
nothing she can't do, No, she's just so so good. Well,
enjoy our conversation with miss Amber. Hi, guys, congrats Amber.

(02:13):
Oh my gosh, wow. Of course, of course I'm going
to kill you. Why what do I do? That ticks off?
That was really funny. It was really funny, like you're
like laying down, you just like wait a minute, because

(02:35):
I mean it's Amber. And then it went viral. I
was like, this is the worst secret, but Amber, your
voice is so is so distinctive an iconic that like
a friend of mine was like, this is Amber, right,
and I heard I probably heard like the opening of
your perfect and I was like, yes, that's Amber. The
amount of you crazy to think if anybody, if that's

(02:57):
anybody else. As soon as you open your mouth on that,
My Twitter was flooded. I like how people come to
me like they're like, do you like do you see this?
And I listened to one note, I'm like, well, all right,
when did you When did you film this in July? Oh?
My Goshi in July and then we filmed finale in August.

(03:24):
You've always been good at keeping secrets, so you're good
at that and Heather, both of you. I watched Heathers
Dan all over again and I watched her her season.
She killed, she did? She did? Um? Was it hard

(03:44):
to keep the secret? Absolutely? Are you kidding me? Like
I had to, Like, I mean I had to tell
my mom. I had because she lives with me, so
like like where are you going every day? A mask?
And like right, because I had to like literally drive
there in the whole get up the whole time. Is

(04:08):
that legal? Are you allowed to do that? It's like
having tinted windows or something. We um for Drag Race,
they had us do it. They tried to have us
do it, but um, you know the hoodie and the shield. Also,
you know, Jenna and I were absolutely breaking every NBA
before we even go I would not like Kevin. That's

(04:31):
why when they did the review, when they had, like
did the review before the season, so I was like,
there's nobody that doesn't know this is Kevin, right, yeah,
exactly exactly, Like you gotta be stupid. The problem is
is like, especially with you, it's like we did over
seven hundred songs and you open your mouth and it's like, well,
like that voice has been on fifty five million records

(04:53):
sold or something like that, Like, yeah, we know, there's
no way people are stuck with our voices. Worst secret,
it didn't matter. You still want That's why I was like,
I can make a TikTok about this because everybody knows.
Darren also tweeted about it too't um Amber. I was

(05:17):
so happy I got you had a little viewing party
for the finale and you invited all of us, which
is so sweet. I was so happy I got to
be there, um with your friends and your family, everybody
freaking out, which is so nice to be in a
room full of people who react how like how I
do normally when I hear you saying, which was great
for me personally. And I got to meet corn Bread

(05:42):
and yes corn bredge just hey, um, how did you
feel last night surrounded by all that love everybody? Well, honestly,
it's so funny. So I obviously started doing press the
day before the finale and like everyone was like, so
what have you got do? Like where are you gonna
watch it? And like I really didn't think about it, um,

(06:04):
but we like in this industry, I'm learning like you
have to like celebrate all of your winds because sometimes
there's so few and far between, you know, Um, there's
a lot of like rejection in this business and there's
a lot of wondering what you're gonna do next, So
like when you have these moments, you have to celebrate.
So I'm really trying to be better at being present

(06:26):
and so last minute, like I just called my homeboy
who owns that after our spot and I was like, hey,
can I like invite like my close family and friends
to come and watch the finality? He was like, I
was wondering what you're gonna do. Yeah, sure, but he
just decided to do the night before and everybody just
they just shut up, like I didn't know people are

(06:48):
I think it was like fifty people there last night,
and your version of gravity was stupid. You're so dumb.
It's my body like it's wild, it's a wild t.
I was like, she's not doing gravity. And then you
didn't do gravity. You know, some other Gravity Enquired came out,

(07:13):
and you know, like I always wanted to do that
song only you and I talked about that album all
the time. Continue them in the Miseducation of Lauren Hill
run hand in hand for me, So I always wanted
to do X Factor on the show um from Miseducation Laurnhill,
and I always want to do Gravity from Continuum. So

(07:34):
like when I got to choose my personal song, um
that I chose, I chose Gravity because I just it's
such a beautifully written song and it's so soulful and
the band and like some instrumentation and like just break down.

(07:55):
Do you guys know that Alicia Keys a singing background
on that? What what he was doing? The that's yeah?
Like crazy? Who did you like did you contribute to
that arrangement? Um? So, Miguel Gandelman Um, who I actually
worked with on The Whiz, is music supervisor and Pio

(08:20):
is an executive show who used to dance on Glee.
He was a dancing on Glee and he's like he
produced me on this show. Yeah, he's about to have
a dad. Like so it was like this weird, like
full circle moment. My vocal coach, Tim is a childhood
friends dad that was on the show. Like he was

(08:43):
my everybody that comes on the show gets us a
vocal coach and to help you map out your songs,
and like he ended up being my vocal coach. Like
it was just family feeling from the moment that I
got on on on the set. So yeah, it was
like that crazy How nice too you get to finally
did some covers that you've been waiting to do, honestly,

(09:05):
you know we did. We did Edge and Glory. That
was like so that was like really special to do too.
That was a song I chose that song too. Oh
that's so nice. It was nice to hear you do it.

(09:30):
I loved you you and your like your whole theme
throughout this and like reintroducing yourself in a way like
I feel like this was a really empowering moment for you. Yeah,
I was. I feel like, you know, we've been in
this business, like we we were on a show that
was about misfits and outcasts, and like it's just been

(09:52):
like a running thing throughout all of our lives. I
think of finding yourself in this business, especially after being
such a big television show, finding yourself as an actor,
finding your voice as a as an artist, can be
really difficult, and it's very easy to become very jaded
and over it. And you know, um, this was an

(10:13):
opportunity for me to kind of go out without anyone
knowing who I was, even though everybody knew, but kind
of like without anyone knowing who I was and not
having any preconceived notions about who I am as an artist,
and getting people to listen to me with new ears
and me through a different lens towards the end. And

(10:34):
so that's an invaluable it's an invaluable experience that I
wish everyone that's been in this business for a really
long time that may need, uh kind of like a
jump starter to be refueling that everyone. I'm sure, it
didn't feel liberating like when we did Drag Race was
it felt like we were covered and we can sort
of just focus on the ability of performances who we are,

(10:56):
And I felt liberating. I'm sure being in that costume.
You know, Kevin, you're a pretty girl. Anybody can be
pretty after eight hours of makeup, amber it was, but
you looked really pretty careful. You guys did a really
great job on the show. Like, honestly, I love you
have your moment, Jenna, Like you really wasn't she good?

(11:18):
You were sexy, like throwing that body around, that body
was bodying, like you look amazing, Thank you, thank you, Aggy.
What No, I did it while I was pregnant. No way, Jenna,
you were pregnant. I was pregnant, yes, and nobody knew
only Kevin who had just had the baby. Oh no,

(11:40):
I wish I looked like that after Yeah, I was pregnant. Yeah,
she was in there. How cool? Right? Oh that's awesome. Yeah,
except that my costumes kept getting tighter and tighter around
my tips every time, and I was like, they're gonna
have to make this bigger and I can't explain why.

(12:00):
Amazing you guys did such a great job. This is
about you. Yeah, let's talk about you more. Miss your
ball now. You know, heart winner can't help but win,
which is great. No one deserves it more, you know,
That's right. That's nice when you see the good people
actually winning winning. Thank you. You know, I've watched. I've

(12:22):
obviously listened to you guys podcasts and I've watched, and
I love how you guys are reclaiming the legacy of
Glee and bringing kind of bringing it back to um,
bringing it back to a really great perspective. Like even
though there's been drama and trauma and things that have happened,
that's like not all what has has happened, you know, Joe,
And the narrative that you guys are taking and I

(12:43):
think is is actually amazing. And it really did make
me sit and been like, wait, I did have an
amazing time and I got lifelong like friends and family,
you know, through this amazing show. And you know, this
show kind of catapulted my career and it's prepared for
literally everything that I can POSSI nothing is as hard

(13:04):
as that show was the ground. Yeah, and you've done
a lot after that, I mean even Dreamgirls, Dream which
what I was gonna say, you you slaid. I went
to London, I saw it, but I still I'm tired
watching you on that stage, but not as tired as
we did for those six years. Yeah. I mean honestly,

(13:26):
I was like yo. Every time I would think like,
oh man, I'm like, nah, I've gone through more. I've
been more tired. We have to talk about for a second. Um,
Kevin reminded me about the intro that I alternate intro
for Glee, and then you responded on our Instagram and

(13:46):
you're like, I sang it. It's like, oh yeah, I forgot.
I think me and Lea both sang it. No, so
they didn't they didn't know if they wanted me to
do it. They didn't know if they wanted lead to
do it. They didn't know if they wanted us to
do a duet. So we both end up recording it,
but it ended up not working. I mean, it was
such a weird was and I think it was kind

(14:07):
of like, if I can't remember correctly, I think it
kind of had the feeling of like um, the nanny, Yes, yeah,
yes that there, yes, like that weird chick hopping around
and the egg and odd we're not watching. I was
kind of like, how did that go? I literally do

(14:31):
not remember. I think I'm a single thing. We're gonna
have to ask him. Know, we're gonna have to get
Adam Anders. Ryan is not going to remember Adam Adam.
Adam will have it somewhere and he'll have the files
having to get on the show. We'll have it somewhere.
We are before I forget about the finale real quick

(14:52):
about my singer, I was because you know, I'm number
one fan I am, but Riley's the best singer of
all time. And to have like singers last night like
Robin Thicke and Nicole, that show was crazy and a
lot and over the top, and like the real moment,
one of the real moments last night was they sort

(15:14):
of like dropped the sort of over the top act
and we're just talking about you vocally and like because
you're a singers singer, And it was really nice to
hear on a show like that, singers talking to singers
about singing, and it was like, this is what she deserves,
like to be you're obviously on their level like you are.

(15:37):
I mean, they're both incredible and it was I was
just so appreciative that there was sort of like a
pause and give you even more flowers of like, yeah,
this is who she is. I know that vocal ability.
It's not normal, and I know who has it right, right?
You know what was awesome? Like Kevin, you and I
really connected over music, our love for music, our knowledge

(15:59):
of music. It can like we would sit and dissect
albums and we actually talked about Robin Think's album and
I was I was so happy you mentioned A Beautiful World.
That's probably that's me and mis education of Laurne Hill
and a beautiful world or my top two. Yes, a
beautiful World that album is so it was so beautifully

(16:22):
contrivers shocked that you said that because it's one of
literally such a beautiful world that's that's delful. He's one
of us, the bio Hill, Like, boy, what was you
going through when you ruck? Is? Like I really wanted
to sit and take his brain about that. I'm sure
you can at I've gotta find Robin we want to

(16:44):
talk about that song problem. But to see someone that
I admired as a writer and a vocalist, right, and
then Nicole Sherzinger, who's like show stopping boys like we're
not talking about like I feel like every time Nicole
Scherzinger sayings, she's kind of like saying like just to
remind y'all, yeah, yes, like I can do this. Yeah,

(17:09):
I know y'all see me and they have forgotten. Let
me remind you of where it started. I've I've literally
watched her do hit the Edith Crushed. I watched her
Mom Pop Stars too. I literally watched her and she's
the first one of the first like non black people
that I've ever heard sing like that. I was like
people saying like that, and I learned, nope, ye, people

(17:32):
don't know too, because if they think she's just like
in a girl group, you know, dancing and looking hot,
shrimpled threats. So like seeing her and then hearing what
they had to say and hearing this sincerity in their
voices when they said it like that, that is what
actually hit me and what made me cry, because you
do second guess yourself and your gift when you deal

(17:53):
with so much rejection, and um, that was just I
can't even explain how we do need outside validation. It's
not our bread and butter. We shouldn't always seek outside
validation to know who we are, and I feel like
I validate myself, but to have that outside validation from
your peers be so genuine, it just really it refueled me.

(18:20):
You can I can hear it in your voice. I
can see it like you. It's just it's beautiful. What
is the difference between winning the Mirror Ball on Dancing
with the Stars in this one? Like, how do they?
How do they differ? For you, bro, I felt like

(18:42):
when I did Bars, I was like I earned this ship.
You did you were hobbling in. I'm like, oh no,

(19:03):
we made amver. Bring the mirror ball in for everybody
to see. She's destroying her body. Give her the damn trophy,
Give me the trophy. Like No. Dancing of the Stars
was really like I really like grew through my anxiety
through Dancing with the Stars. Like I was super anxious
that whole entire show, Like I was, that's a hard
show to do. I was clarified every time I had

(19:27):
to go and dance. I had to literally talk myself down.
With this show. It was just fun, Like I really
wasn't worried about an outcome so funny. I just wanted
to have fun and I really really, it was so much,
but like y'all should do it, like please if singer,
please do it, because it was it was again I

(19:49):
was with a lot of fun. Wow. Wow, wow, that's
so good and also just another opportunity. Anything that will
make you sing for millions of people every night. I
just yeah, I have to. I support it. I support it. Um,
this is really exciting. It's just good to see what

(20:09):
we were talking to. Were like, Okay, we don't have
it for a couple of minutes, so we were gonna
have to have you back to like we'll dig into
like the Glee world stuffy. Yeah, have any time. Like
I'm I'm going for like a two weeks, but I
don't know how how much How long are you guys
like filming your have you guys filed episode? We do
it weekly, so no, we're only on like episode four

(20:32):
right now. Honestly, okay, we'll have you come on for
a good one. We just watched Bust Your Windows and
oh my god, and we watched Roads Not Taken. Oh
my gosh, you guys sneaking stuff with your legs. Oh
my god, there's somebody that happened, Like you guys got
to remind me of a lot of ye when I

(20:53):
slid down, When I slid down the front of that
the car every single night one Remember there's an escalade,
but you did it while you're singing every single night
to this day. I think that's why my back is.
You have like a busted anchor a million percent. I

(21:14):
am wrecked, wrecked from that show. Oh my good. And
you didn't get a mirrorball trophy. We didn't get any
mirror We didn't get anything. No, just to check, So Amber,
you do another show with another game show with Chris
Cole for named that name that two? Was it fun?

(21:38):
You guys? Should? I bet you crushed it? I did
pretty good. Another show. We'll have to see him Amber
Riley win and see what happens. You know Chris is
competitive is hell? Yes that's right again? Was not trying
to the beast comes out? We love a game, know,

(22:00):
we love a game. We get to Harry's house and
play Mafia that people there. Yeah, um, all right, Well
make sure you watch Amber on Chris Cole for obviously
on the Name that tune on January eleven. I'm going
to watch all of your numbers again. Oh my gosh,

(22:24):
I asked how. I was like, where can I watch this?
And she sent me just the YouTube plank I watched.
I'll make it real easy for you. Amber. Congratulations once again,
just the well deserved. Go bathe and all your glory today,
you know. Yeah, yeah, and celebrate the wind. Your day

(22:49):
should be over now. I love y'all, love you. Wow. Well,
I couldn't be more excited for her. Honestly, she's just
glowing with that that that post winter glow. What is
that like, Jenna. We haven't won, and I don't know.
I'd like to know one day maybe. Um. She just

(23:10):
speaks so well and she sounds good, she looks good,
she seems happy. Yeah, we love that. It's just it's
just nice to see people that we love doing well.
She deserves it. Yeah, all the all the goodness in
the world to miss and Biley, congratulations. Thanks for joining
