Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is are you getting podcast? I can listen with
my kids. Come on kids with brothers Sebastian and Brandon Martinez,
who are kids helping kids. Welcome. Everyone. Joining us on
today's episode is Poppy. She is a cancer survivor and
also designed Are You stand Out to Cancers Socks? But
before we interview her, me and my brother are going
to interview each other. Sebastian start off with the first question,
(00:22):
what do you want to ask me? Why did you
want to join the company with me? Well, because when
we started, it was just you and our mom. So
when you went to, say, to sell our socks for
the first time, you were pretty shot because you were
around five at the time. So mom called that up
and he was like, hey, brings Brandon over because you
know he's last shy, he's older, and he goes, how
(00:44):
I'll talk to people? So I came along and I
saw some socks on the spot, and that's how it
became the Director Sales company. And now I'm less shy
because I followed your footsteps for selling socks. She I
left an impact on him, inspired him. Alright, So to action,
why did you want to start in the company, Well,
(01:07):
I wanted to start the company because I had a
passion for socks. I love cool, funky and high crazy socks.
So my mom asked if I wanted to design my
own sock company, and I'm like, yes, of course, because
I love socks and my mom knew I had a
passion for socks. So I went to the table, started
getting my materials, and started designing socks. And one year
(01:27):
later we manufactured all our socks in the manufacturing company
and that's how our business, guys started. Well, speaking of socks,
which is your favorite sock design? Definitely has to be
the googly eyes. I love those socks because they're just funny.
They're funny looking, and I love those socks. And my favorite, well,
I don't have a favorite favorite. I have three favorite favorites. Favorites,
(01:51):
you know, you know, you know you can't just have one.
So first I have the lightning bolt right because you know,
we live in my meats always raining, thundering, lightning. And
then I have the race car socks because I love cars.
Cars are like super cool and fast and they're awesome.
And then we have the rocket ship ones because I
(02:13):
like space NASA and just really cool. Yeah, and what
is your favorite food? Because I have many favorite foods. Well,
who does it? Like? Come on, you can't just have
one favorite food. You always have to go around eating
different foods to see what you like the best. And
for me, right now, you know pizza, you know, come on,
(02:35):
that's an obvious one. Steak you know, like stak sandwiches,
phen Mignon New York strip um really good and French
Friends also really good. That's kind of a side, but
it is so food. Well, I have favorite foods. I
(02:56):
have three favor foods. Actually, I love Korean barbecue chicken.
That's the best. I love barbecue wings, and I love ribs.
It seems like you like going to sports bars, yes,
but not many sports bars have Korean barbecue chicken. Yeah,
maybe you go to No not a place for that.
(03:20):
Do you mind if I interrupt here? When you go
to sports sports clubs today? Idea? No? No, no, like
the sports like the Duffies, got it, got it, Like
it's a restaurant, but they also have a bar. But
last time we went to Buffalo Wild Wings with my
dad and my teammate and his dad and my dad
(03:40):
ordered a beer and they were like, can I see
your I d please, and it was Buffalo Wings. And
that's the only place I asked my dad because he
got a beer and they wanted to check his idea
if he was twenty one or older, Like, come on,
he was white here, that's like, like that's obvious, Like
he's over twenty one. Well not necessarily, because you can
(04:01):
have white hair and be super young. Yeah, good die
your hair. Maybe. Well, who who do you look up to?
Who is your role model doing? Because he plays NBA?
You know, I love basketball and I want to be
in the NBA. And also he has his own company,
his socks, shoes, his apparel company basically, and we have
(04:22):
her own too, So I saw a look up to him.
So who's yours? The same, Doyne Wade? Because I love basketball. Um, Actually,
like three weeks ago, I went to Kansas and Orlando
for a basketball tournament. Kansas was first and then Orlando
was second, and don Wad also has a socking chew
brand Wade And yeah, so you just want to company
(04:45):
me over, I'm alright, So do you enjoy being an entrepreneur?
Of course I love being an entrepreneur, but you're also
going to have to it's also balanced like with Enrique said,
you go through the good times and the bad times.
Just like when we went to New York and for
Good Morning America Shart Think Your Life edition, we got
(05:06):
like I'll sit seven at that time. So it was
my high literally my high. Sorry, my radio one off
and that was Good Morning America Shark Tank your Life
editions and we met Damon John. That was the best
experience ever. I also like being entrepreneurs because an entrepreneur
because of the experiences you get to experience, like you
get to do so many cool things because our company
(05:29):
opens up doors to really amazing things like Good Morning America,
this podcast. It's really amazing. Listen. How many kids can
say that they've got on Good Morning America or have
their own podcast. Not a lot, not a lot. It's
pretty cool, but we can. Yeah, we can say that
really neat h Okay. Do you think more kids should
(05:50):
learn about being entrepreneurs? Nah? Just kidding, of course they should,
because they be an entrepreneur means more than selling stuff.
You get to do. You get to get back. You
could give back to the community, help people make smiles.
People that were sad, you could bring them up and
lighten them. You get to do so many cool things,
(06:11):
like go on TV. Like that's an amazing experience. M hmm.
And for the first time, actually we went on Good
No No No seven seven News. It was our first
time ever, really excited because that was the first time,
because you know, every kid's dream is to go on TV.
You know, when you see somebody like a news camera,
(06:32):
you always try to like go behind them and say
like like start waving, try and get on TV, you know.
And when we got on TV for the first time,
we were like just amazed, were excited, very great, like
the like I don't know how to describe it in
words because what we did it was so much that
(06:53):
we got to go on TV. It was almost as
exciting as being on this podcast of hosting your your
own podcast. Its most exciting being on TV or hosting
your own podcast. I feel like podcast because the TV
like it's just like a three minute segment, but for podcasts,
it's like like however you make it. And also you
(07:14):
get to talk about things you want to talk about.
Like TV like give you like a script, but here
we could talk about whatever we want basically a conversations.
And I think kids should also learn about being entrepreneurs
because their kids and so they have a business plan,
so they could take that to the future and have
a job in the future and already have a planned.
(07:37):
You don't have to make a resume. You don't have
to you know, make like phone calls for interviews. All
do you do is dove? Will you love? Be your
own boss? All right? Name one less that you've learned
from being entrepreneur. One lesson I've learned is that you should.
(07:58):
You're never too younger too to start a business. You
could be seven or you could be seventy. It doesn't matter,
as long as you have the passion to do it.
One I've learned is don't let anybody get in the
way of your dreams. If you have the hard passion
to do it, just go for it. Yeah, if you
can meet one celebrity, one just one celebrity, which one
(08:19):
would be? That's tough? Who would I meet? I can't
meet myself. You're a ready celebrity. You can um, Oh no,
(08:40):
that's actually really tough. Do you want me to go first?
If I can meet any celebrity, I meet Ellen Ellen
de generous because I want to go on her show
really bad, and she's an amazing person. She's also very generous.
Ha ha ha. Alright, so who would I mean? I
(09:02):
don't know. It's actually very tough. Maybe I'll probably go
with Dwayne Wade because you know, he's also our inspiration.
And yeah, so I like to me to give some
tips and tricks me. Okay, this is a very tough one.
What's your favorite animal? That's easy? A dog. Dogs are
(09:24):
just wonderful pets. Yes, I love dogs. We have our
own dog named Juno eighty pounds of way. Marian her
she's the best dog ever. She doesn't really like us,
so he likes some mom. I mean she she likes me.
When do you have food in your hands? But we
still love her? Yeah. Who does she live? Does she
stay live inside her outdoors? Goes with the public? She
(09:47):
never goes to public areas. Yeah, but we take her out.
She starts to bark at and stuff. Who gets to
take her? Who gets to take her out? Like to
do number one? Number two? Those responsibilities? What about you?
You guys? Like don't know? I did that my mom
when I'm home alone? Yeah, like the movie now, Yeah,
(10:07):
but I don't set of traps all right, I try
to hurt people here all right, that somebody who does
want to break in. I'm a set of trap, all right.
So when I'm home alone, my dog needs to go outside.
I take her outside when I'm home alone, which is
very rely often. Um, you've been home alone, Yeah, for
like thirty minutes. My dog needs to go outside. So
(10:28):
I take her out the sliding glass door because I'm
not allowed to take her outside outside because then my
mom said she'll run out and get lost. Yeah, so
I take it to the front of the yard and
take to the back of the to the pool yard,
to the pool. Got it? And what about talking about
the house? You guys help out with, like with the
dishes and things like that, es, I phone, close your phone, clothes.
(10:49):
Are you any good at it? Yeah, I'm really good.
You can ask my mom. We'll have her on another
podcast and ask your mom. Yes, should interview here? I
we should interview your mom. I take out the dishes
and put into dishes. Also do the dishes, clean the table,
clean the room at clean the table too. Yeah, we
basically do. Like if he's not doing something, I do
the other thing. If he's clean the table, I'll do
(11:10):
the dishes. If he's what about your rooms. Who's like
the who's the sloppiest, who's the most Yeah? Yeah, because
one thing, we have our PlayStation in our room, so
he's in our room sometimes and sometimes eats food and
just leaves the table or when he's changing, he was
just throwing his clothes on the floor, Like I'm organized
(11:31):
and I put it in the laundry right and your
billy doesn't do Yes, yeah, okay, do you want to
interview your mom right now? I think right now we
have to interview your mom. Ladies and gentlemen, call on
Rachel Brandon a Sebastian. Which of the two is the
most who's the most organized? Neither one? So they've been
(11:52):
hyping this up here. They are equally disorganized, equally a mess.
And I can't wait to play this back to them
so that when I asked them to take out the dishes,
to load the dishes, to clean their room, to clean
the table, to fold the clothes, you know, then they'll
actually do it. My mom has to ask you guys
(12:13):
are making it sound like it's like on your own
Sometimes when I'm watching TV and there's clothes on a couch,
because we get it, we get it from the dry
and put it in the clothes. I just started folding it. Okay,
after I ask you like twenty times once she asks me,
I do it all right? Why am I? Why am
I believing mom over you? You too? Because because she's older? Okay? Yeah, Well,
(12:39):
hopefully after this podcast they're going to start doing everything
they say. Rachel, how proud of you are? How proud
are you? A Brandon and Sebastian. I'm very proud. I
don't think I could be any more proud of them.
They they really do a lot for them, their future
and for the future of others. You know, they've made
(13:00):
it a point to two find a way to help
others through their socks, and they've really been able to
use their socks as a vehicle to raise awareness and
raise funds for so many much needed organizations and different causes.
So I'm extremely proud of them. You know, there's there's
kids that you know, on on the weekends, they're they're
(13:22):
playing video games or hanging out with their friends. And
granted they do do that, but you know, nine out
of ten times, we may have an event, we may
have work to do, we may need to go take
pictures and make videos, do something for the company. And again,
doing work for the company means doing work for others.
So you know, they don't complain. They're they're always there,
(13:44):
whether it's waking up up five am, six am, or
having to be in a studio for four or five hours.
You know, they don't complain and they're happy to do
it because they know that this is their future. And
I've I've really tried to open up doors and set
a future for um, which I think is it's important
for for us to do, you know, for our kids.
(14:10):
Very good. Well, I think now it's time to introduce
our next guest, Poppy, So Poppy, how are you today? Good? Um?
So far? I just broke up and ate breakfast. Would
you for breakfast? I had cereal? Oh what's type? Ris Kaspace.
(14:30):
I like the tree but I've never ate the cereal before.
It's good, It's really good. All right, Maybe I'll go
to publics later and check it out. So first, we
want to thank you for actually coming to our podcast
and to speaking to us. So let's go on to questions.
So we want you to tell us about your journey
and how you use your journey to design our sock. Well,
(14:51):
your sock Um, well, my journey has been pretty long.
It's been about two years now and it's being rough
at times, but it's at the end. I wouldn't actually
change it for anything. I met a lot of amazing people,
(15:11):
I went to a lot of amazing places, and I
wouldn't change that for anything, even not getting cancer. UM,
how I made your socks? Well, I love the ocean.
It's one of my favorite places, and the ocean really
kind of helped me through being sick. And I so
(15:34):
I made the little arrows into ways and then I
have UM seven family members, so I put eight little
arrows inside the big arrow to UM symbolize my entire family. Well, so,
there's so much that goes into the socks, so many
little details and like big details are coming together. And
(15:55):
just create a sock and make it one. Yea. I
have another question, what do you think about our kids
Helping kids initiatives? I really love that, Um, it's pretty awesome.
I think that, Um, it's awesome for anyone to help
being kids, but UM, I love that kids can help kids,
not just that up. We also think it's good because
(16:18):
we get to help other kids inspire them, and we
also like gets inspire them to help others. So not
only are we helping other kids, but we're also helping
other kids to like inspiring other kids to help others.
So it's not just us. Yes, I love that. That's
it's awesome. So we know how cancer impacted you and
(16:39):
how you wouldn't change anything in your life even about cancer.
So how has cancer impacted your life? Well, it's it
definitely changed how I felt about everything. Um. I used
to see the world as like I don't know, gray
and things create mixed together, and now I definitely see
(17:01):
its like black and white. I know what's good and
what's bad. Um, But I made some I also made
some amazing friends that, um, I'm gonna I'm gonna be
with my entire life. And it's really hard to see
them go through hard things when I'm doing so well.
But I know that that's just how life has to be.
(17:23):
By the way, what would you tell kids that have
been impacted by cancer? What would you tell them? I
would tell them that they are they're the real superhero
is not like anything like Marvel. They're the superheroes and
they're like the strongest people on earth. So true. And
by the way, guys, if you would like to go
see Poppy's new design for standards to cancer, go to
(17:45):
are You Kidding stocks dot com and go see your design. Well,
speaking of superheroes, who is your favorite superhero? It's definitely
Sore or so much. Well, Soor is one of like
the only movies that I've actually seen, mean, besides a
few others. And um, well, I really like that Chris
(18:06):
hani's Worth plays him, and that um he's really funny.
He makes jokes and it's really funny. And my favorite
movie store Ragnarok. That movie is pretty cool. Well, in
my in my school, all my friends and I say
that Umthan knows because something knows, right. He always goes
(18:26):
around sing on Than, Who's so funny. It's my altar
eagle nice. So, how to cancer impacted you? Well? Stand
up Cancer invited me to l A and um to
do this commercial for American Airlines and I think they
(18:46):
can depth with Marvel as well. So that was pretty awesome.
I got to go to l A, I got to
get um new clothes and hang out in LA for
three days. I had to shoot a commercial commerce show
and be an actor, which I have to say I
would not do again because it's a very very painful experience,
(19:08):
like forever to get like this tiny video. Um, and
they helped a lot. They send me packages and they
make me feel better when I feel sick, They'll send
me messages and stuff. It's really nice. Well, speaking of
the American Airlines commercial, I've seen that commercial a lot,
and every time I see it it makes me a
(19:29):
bit more happy because they're American Airlines Send Cancer. They're
doing such a huge thing to like, you know, impact others,
like putting names of people. Like that's really like if
you see your name on it, like people actually care
about you and don't so they can put your name
on it and with those donations you can find a
care for cancer. Yes, I love that. What was your
(19:51):
experience like going on the commercial? At first, it was
like amazing because I just got to get new clothes,
you know, a lot of really good snacks and um,
hang out with these really cool people. But I want
to start it actually acting. I knew it was like
a lot of work and I had to be standing
on my feet for a long time, but it was
(20:11):
still really fun and I loved it. Do you think
it was like worth everything to go on the commercial?
Was worth doing all that stuff. You know, they told
you what to do. Yeah, yeah, I think it was.
What do your friends think about you on the commercial?
Come on, you like a celebrity now you're famous? Yeah,
they they thought it was pretty awesome. Um, they definitely
(20:33):
say that I'm a celebrity now. But yeah, they said
it is pretty awesome, and um, they loved how I was.
I got to, um go on a commercial because I
think that I deserved it. Not only is a commercial awesome,
but you are awesome for helping like inspire other kids
who are battling cancer go through it and like letting
(20:54):
them know that there is a way out and they
could defeat cancer all together. Yeah, I've got that. I
believe that role model for people. Um, but definitely some
of my friends that I cancer are my role models.
You're not also a role model, but you're also all
celebrity because you just want to you know, a commercial
and an inspiration. You know, yes, you're not only helping
(21:15):
kids battling cancer, but you're also helping kids without by
making them help back and inspiring them to give back.
That makes it sound pretty awesome. Thank you Poppy for
being on our podcast and designing these amazing socks that
have so much meeting into them. So we just want
to thank you for being here, have a good day,
thank you for having me. Thank you if you just
(21:36):
heard Are You Kidding Podcast with brothers Sebastian and Brandon
Martinez who are kids Helping kids
