Speaker 1 (00:02):
Oh and gosh, Lils, this is the last episode of
Bad Bunny, No Bad Bunny sports y empty. But this
is the end of our journey. I mean, I'm really
going to miss him staring at his photo, listening to
him whisper yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, then leaning in
(00:25):
for it. Wait, hold on a second, that's on our podcast.
I don't remember that. Is this like an icons after
Dark episode that you didn't invite me to? Where have
you been? Well, Remo. I am happy that these three
episodes help you ship your status with beneath Goal, But
we are not done with anjal just yet. Good and
(00:46):
today's episode is a little different. We have a very
special guest or even answering questions from you our listeners. Plus,
you're not going to want to miss this. You're not
a nun and I'm not an altar boy. You have
me crazy. Your ass is really naughty. I'm your host,
Liliana Vostez and I'm Joseph Carrillo And this is becoming
(01:10):
an Icon, a weekly podcast where we give you the
rundown on how today's most famous latint stars have shaped
culture and given the world. Some extras at aar, sit
back and get comfortable because we are going in the
only way we know how with Buena leaves some cheesday
(01:31):
and a lot of opinions as we relive their greatest
achievements on our journey to find out what makes them
so iconic. Before we welcome Toises, Joseph, I want to
know what is something you learned during our Bad Bunny episodes.
(01:54):
You know, actually I learned a lot of stuff. I
learned to really love Bad Bunny, and I don't mean
being silly. I mean how he is a humanitarian and
also how he really loves Puerto Rico, he stayed true
to himself, how he liked fashion at a young age,
and you know he was. I love him more than
(02:14):
Harry Styles because there is a history about him in fashion,
trying on his mom's clothes at which you could hear
back on episode two, what about you tell me thank
you for the plug, love, the support. I think the
one thing I learned more about, and it's not really
necessarily specific to Bad Bunny, but when we talked about
(02:38):
his SoundCloud days, it really inspired me to take a
closer look at SoundCloud and really think about the power
and influence of social media besides just sharing photos and
like funny videos on TikTok. I think I looked at
it more as I didn't even know what SoundCloud really
was until we started researching this episode, and to learn
that there's so many incredible artists that started on SoundCloud,
(03:01):
like Chance the Rapper, Oh my god, Lizzo, I didn't
know that, Billie Eilish and her brother. There's so many
amazing artists that are putting their music out for free
and you can support them on SoundCloud. So I joined
and I've used it to find new cool artists. So
for me, that's the thing I learned most about. So
thank you bad Bunny for introducing me to SoundCloud. And
(03:22):
part of me kind of felt really old and out
of touch that I didn't know about SoundCloud, But I
think that's the beauty of a great podcast. It kind
of teaches you and inspires you to go out and
take what you learned in an episode and learn more.
So for me, it was all about SoundCloud and discovering
new artists and yeah, expanding my musical prowess. I love that,
(03:44):
And you know what, I actually I actually need to
get into that because I'm always looking for cool and
new kind of sounds for you know, the my facial
sculpts and stuff. Just something different. And it's cool to
even think that there's like just some cool indie music
that I don't even really know. So thank you Bad
Funny totally. And one thing I want to add is
I had an idea that SoundCloud was all like electronic
(04:07):
experimental music. Me too, I do I think that it's not.
You can find country music. Literally, there is a genre
for every type of listener. So English hymns maybe, Okay,
I'm not sure that I get to that niche, but
you know what, I'm sure there is an English hymn
artist waiting to be discovered on SoundCloud. I'm here for that,
(04:31):
all right, you guys. We are going to kick off
with our guests. He's a culture reporter at Time where
he covers social media, film, television, books, podcast, and today
he's covering bad Bunny. Welcome to the show, Voices. How
are you. I'm doing great. Thank you so much for
having me appreciate it. You already have a cheering section
in Joseph. It's true. I need fans everywhere I go,
(04:54):
so thank you very much. Welcome to your fancloud. Now
we are so excited to chat with you about Bad Bunny.
We've gotten so many questions over the last few episodes,
and I think the best place to start is a
foundation for his genre, which is reggaeton. Where did reggaeton
come from? Is it Puerto Rican? Is it Dominican? Is
it all of the things? Is it Caribbean? Is it Mexican? Hey?
(05:18):
I mean, I mean it's hard to describe exactly where
the roots of Regeton come from, but I mean it
really came about from Panama on the late eighties and
early nineties. And you know, it's more mostly just like
music of Resistance and has always been, especially when it
(05:38):
came from Puerto Rico. I love that. I think in
everything I've read, I have not heard somebody describe it
like that. So music of Resistance. I want a T
shirt that says that La musica the Resistance. Now. I
do want to talk all things Grammys as it relates
to Benetho, because I know it was the Grammys, but
it honestly felt like his night. He obviously made history
(05:59):
with the Album of the Year nomination. Huge for Latin music,
huge for music just in general. Sometimes I hate when
we put Latin in front of music because isn't this
just amazing for the industry period. But what everybody was
talking about that night, very similar to what everyone was
talking about when Ricky Martin performed at the Grammys, was
all of the pride, all of the Latino pride, the
(06:22):
Puerto Rican pride, like everything that happened in that performance.
What were your thoughts watching them? Well, I had to
work for the Grammys. I remember sitting there next to
my roommate and I didn't know who was going to perform,
didn't know who's gonna open. But I'm staying there typing
my words into my laptop and he started, and I
just remember closing it and being like, I don't have
time for this right now. I need to watch Bad
(06:45):
Bunny perform. This is the most important performance of the night.
And when he started doing this pust laplay obviously about
going is just the most amazing song on that album.
But this west Lapaya is like a Mettinge mom mixture
that my Dominican heart needed and needed to see at
(07:05):
the Grammys. Does it see that? There was like a
little tear in my eye and I was like, wow,
that was just the most like profound moment to see
someone like perform Medenge in front of all of these
people who have probably no idea what he said and
also what this means. Yeah, exactly, Like the most Medenge
(07:27):
song that they know is probably Samente, which my mom
is not a fan of, and I totally get it.
But I'm sorry, did you just tell me your mom
is not a fan of Elvis Cresbo? Woman, I never
said Elvis Cresbo. I said that one song Savamente because
it just as we have a lot more to record
(07:47):
in this episode, I don't want to kick you out
of this zoom. Okay, do not come ft Suabamente. That
song defined an entire generation of women. I am part
of that generation. It might be an older generation that
is okay. We are not agist one becoming an icon. No, no, no,
I mean it's more just the fact that it was
everywhere and it's one of those songs that were just like,
(08:08):
oh my god again, can we play anything else? Give me,
Mark Anthony, give me Like it's kind of cool to
think that this song is going to be, like you
know what I'm saying, like that moment, I hope it is.
It is. Girl, I love to hear that you had
such an emotional response to him, because what you felt
(08:30):
in that tier is what I think a lot of
us feel when we listen to his music and when
we see his success and we see the impact of
what he's doing right to change the perception and to
change our vision, our sometimes narrow vision of Latin music.
So I totally agree, moister. Since you cover all kinds
of crazy shit on the internet from fans, what did
(08:51):
you think about the brody Jenner references to Bad Bunny's
look at the Grammys? Oh my god, so hot? Wow?
You said, you know, the devil works hard, but Chris
Jenner is working over time every single week. I know
Chris Jenner is a masterful, masterful orchestrator. I'm scared of
(09:14):
that woman. Don't be afraid. I don't be afraid. How
would you say the night turned out for Bad Bunny
at the Grammys? I mean, winning yet another Grammy is
always a big thing, no matter like who you are.
I think people wanted him to win Album of the Year.
I personally wanted him to win Album of the Year.
(09:34):
But the Grammy has its own issues that they have
to resolve, and that'll take fifteen twenty more years. Who
knows how long that'll take. But getting the Grammy for
the Best Musica Urbana Album, it's still a big feat
no matter what. Like Grammys are not easy to come by,
you have to convince a whole voting body of people
(09:54):
that your album is worth it, and that Bunny was
able to do it, and it just showed them. In
addition to Spanish speaking people, non Spanish speaking people also
love him and the music that he makes and what
it means to the world as a whole. Zo I
love that man. Now, can we get a little shady?
I love that part. Let's definitely get there. Okay, before
(10:15):
we get a little shady, like real deep in the
non judy, what did you as a journalist who covers
Latin music and normal, regular old English music, how do
we feel about the non English closed captioning at the Grammys?
Was beneathal pissed? And should we all be pissed? In
(10:36):
case somebody didn't see it, tell us what happened? Okay, So,
while he was performing the captions at the bottom for
close captions said singing in non English, and everybody's just like,
why didn't they just write Spanish? Why didn't they translate
it into Spanish like it's all very simple. But Twitter
did what Twitter does and turned it into discourse, like,
(10:58):
took it way out of hand and out of context,
and it went here, there and everywhere. But do I
think that Bunny was mad? No? No, I don't think
he cared or even knew that it was happening. Same
that man has so many other things going on in
his life that he has to prepare for, and he
was probably wondering where Kendall was going to be right
after Jose you need to I'm you really want to
(11:23):
get to the day you and I together, We're going
to work through this and then give him what he
wants at the end. Okay, yes, exactly. It'll be the
last thing we talk about. So many people were introduced
to the magic of Bad Bunny through the Grammys, and
I like to think through becoming an icon. If people
(11:44):
want to see bad Bunny, where can we see him next?
He's going to be a Cachella. I'm very excited about that.
Shut your butt, No, he's not. Yes. One of my
favorite things about that Bunny is that he uses his
platform to bring awareness to social issues, especially on the stage.
So I think that when it comes to Coachella, he'll
probably do the same thing, because we've already seen him
(12:06):
do it with Luma, a company that owns the electrical
good grade for Puerto Rico. He's also done it on
Jimmy Fallon after her came Maria, and then also he
went back on Jimmy Fallen to talk about the death
of a trans woman named Alexa Nabon Luciano in twenty twenty.
So I think when it comes to Coachella, he's probably
(12:27):
gonna do something political. I don't know what it is,
but he's probably gonna point out some sort of injustice
and I think that is probably one of the smartest
things he could do in this moment because there's so
much going on and so much to talk about. So
I didn't even think of that. Well, damn, he's probably
planning his political move as we speak. Yeah, I mean
(12:49):
he's probably in rehearsals, oh for sure. I mean, if
you watched the Beyonce documentary, I think she started rehearsing
like almost a year before. I love that documentary. Well,
she's a virgo. Yeah, I watched that every single I mean,
don't don't don't start talking about virgos. They will find you,
They will find you, and we will We will not
protect you. We will not protect you. Yeah. I think
(13:10):
he's the first Spanish language artist to headline Coachello. That
is major. And I know we had Bechella in twenty eighteen,
but can we call this Bebchella? Oh God, Moises, you
can quote me in your next article for Time. Oh
my god, that's how we're famous. I think I will.
I think you you've done something. We're here be hashtag Bebella.
(13:35):
We also got to talk a little fashion. Joseph and
I love fashion. Bad Bunny has a new collaboration with Adidas.
He's kind of reimagining some Adidas classics. You cannot get them.
They sold out everywhere. People were so upset. Adidas had
to cancel orders because they told people they were getting
the shoes or not getting the shoes. Do you think
this is a step in the right direction for Bad
(13:56):
Bunny given his love for fashion? Like, are we going
to see Bad Bunny Adidas collab like in this way
that we saw Yeezy? Like could he be what Adidas
needs right now? Which is a big name with a
lot of cultural impact with a ton of style and
social currency boom. The thing with beneath the is that
(14:16):
he knows his star power and he knows how much
that translates to dollars, views, ticket sales, all of that.
So I think diversifying his portfolio when it comes to
business and partnering with Adidas for a new fashion line
that will sell out in seconds, not even minutes seconds.
(14:37):
I think we've seen it with not only Kanye West,
but also Beyonce with Ivy Party. I was going to say,
Beyonce is a big one, Yeah, and I think that
she definitely knew what she was doing partnering with Adidas.
So I think that with that bunny, he's going to
sell it out. Everybody's gonna love it. It's going to
be the biggest thing that people talk about whenever. And
(14:57):
to be honest, what perfect tiny right, Like what perfect
diving that this happened, because they're probably like, Hey, we
have some of Kanye's old shoes, get some paint, let's
just paint them. I love that you brought up how
aware he is of his star power and how that
translates to You're talking like millions, billions of dollars for
(15:18):
him as a brand right. He is a musician, but
he is also a very, very viable and lucrative brand
right now. And I saw something that really surprised me.
So we all know Bad Bunny is part of WWE,
and two K released the first look at Bad Bunny
in WWE two K two three, which is the newest
(15:39):
WWE video game. We know that gaming is one of
the fastest growing sectors of media right now. Mooises thoughts,
is it cheesy as fuck or smart at fuck? I
think it's smart because he's always talked about how much
he's loved wrestling, and he's going to be in a
Marvel movie called Alamoto We're is supposed to come out
I think later this year next year. But he's always
(15:59):
talked about how his love for wrestling, So I think
it's the smartest thing that man could do. He knows
what he's doing. I agree. I think he definitely has
all of his business plans all written out, and we're like, Okay,
we're gonna hit this next, we're gonna do this, and
we're gonna go into fashion, and he knows what he's doing.
I just want to say, Yo, those wrestlers, they be
(16:20):
fucking furious. They are hard for fans, So that is
the smartest thing for him to do, because you know what,
they're never going to leave him and they will turn
on to his music and they might even play him
in the ring. Yeah. And if you look at the success,
like if you track the careers of Dwayne Johnson of
John Cena, let's throw in Bad Bunny into the mix.
(16:42):
We're having a fan base in the WWE is next
level business move. That is we call a level up
in the business that is leveling up on all of
the levels at once. So yeah, that's like fucking Beyonce's beehive,
Like it's like that. It's low to Chris for wrestling. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
I am here for it. You Bad Bunny, go secure
(17:05):
the back, go get it, go get it, go get it.
I'm here for it. I'm just excited to see that
part of it. I'm excited just to see him. Hopefully
those little speedos are a little whatever tight number. What's
good eat, Like, y'all should go look at the trailer
for the video game. It's it's really really good. I'm here,
I'm here for it. I love I love seeing beneath
the shine and just like I love also seeing him
bring his energy and what he represents into all of
(17:28):
these different elements. Okay, and if you want to explore
more experimental, I get the own or somebody that maybe
hasn't broken out of their SoundCloud days just yet. Give
me one name that we should be on the lookout for. Okay, one,
only one, but okay, one person that I love is Arca.
(17:50):
She's non binary and her pronouns are shed. She is
this producer musician who is making literally the most interesting
music I've ever heard in my entire way. T Whoa.
It's sort of video game mixture of like video game
slashgathon slash, just all of these different things hyperpop as well.
It's just I don't even know what hyperpop is. You
(18:13):
don't know hyperpop is. It has so much to teach
you that like dirty pop, but like hyper um. Well,
I would say, like think like Charlie xc oh I
love ye look at this, well, like early days of
Charlie XCX mooises. You set me up perfectly for my
next question because I'm always looking around the room whenever
(18:36):
it feels a little too male dominated, and the reggaeton
room has a lot of dudes. In it. Yeah, So
where are the women in reggaeton. I mean, there's so
many of them, especially now, Like some of my favorites
are Nati Natasha, my Dominican Queen she Um. She's been
(18:57):
working with Daddy Yanki a lot, which I think is
really great. And obviously Evie Queen, who had mentioned before
she was one of the first like big back in
like the early two thousands and she really had to
fight to make herself known in that space. But I
mean we also have someone like Paulo Mamummy or Carol
(19:18):
G whose album is just higher amazing and if you
haven't had a chance to definitely suggest you gotta listened
to it. So well, let's talk a little bit about
Carol G. Because this is major news. Did I read
that Carol G actually surpassed Bad Bunny and Selena Kinthania
with a major record, So yeah, Carol G is the
first woman in history to score a number one album
(19:39):
on the Billboard two hundred, the first woman in her history.
Is that true? It is? It's very true. That is crazy. Yeah,
it's not crazy. If you listen to the album Preach, Bitch, Preach.
I love that album so much, there's so many good
songs out there, but it's just recently come out, so
I haven't had too much time to say with it.
(20:00):
But anything KLG does, all listen, especially that one collaboration
with BECKYG. Mommy listen to it over and over again,
which is just amazing. I listened to us repeat I
played Thusa for my baby. Oh my god. I mean,
I go out to the gay bars all the time,
so they're always playing that song and I'm like, not again, honey,
it's right when you walk in and you walk out.
(20:21):
They got that, yes, exactly. By the way, can you
take me to the gay bars next time? Because none
of the oars I'm walking into in LA right now
are playing Thusa when I walk in, so clearly I'm
going to the wrong places. And that's the problem with LA.
There's so many problems with this shade. Well, I mean
everything closes that too, so I'm like, I'm still ready
to go, yeah, and now you're ye just closing. Now,
(20:43):
come on, I know we're so lame, so lame. All right, Well,
let's flip the switch a little bit. We're going to
get to some listener questions people have sent us really
fun questions about Bad Bunny, So we want to make
sure that we get to at least a few of them. Joseph,
what is our first question? At Sutherland? Charm asked, why
(21:05):
is Bad Bunny leaving the Beaches of Last for the
beaches of Malibu? How dare he he's all like Malibu
Barbie on us. Okay, that's an interesting question. One thing
to know about me. And if you couldn't already tell
by my social handles, I'm a big Rihanna stan So.
(21:26):
I love her. I know everything about her, just say
and and you know she's an island girl, Like she
talks about coming from Barbados, growing up there, wanting to
raise kids there. So when she moved over to La
everybody's like, what about Barbados? And I think the same
conversation is happening with that Bunny because people are always
(21:48):
expecting him to stay in Puerto Rico and not go
anywhere else, which is literally impossible as a global iconic superstar. Like,
of course she's going to have a house in La.
Abi has the house in New York. He probably has
something here and something that, like it's what celebrities do.
But I don't think he's going to leave the island
full time. I don't think that would be something he
(22:11):
wants to do. I think all of his families there
and all for most of his fans. But so you
feel like he's just leaving the beaches of just because
he's just I mean, obviously he wouldn't just be stuck.
Or is he chasing Samela Booty? So and I know
where you're going. I know that, Joseph. Question, let's revisit it.
(22:35):
But she always is visiting Bad Bunny's twin, Brodie Jenner
in Malibu because that's her half brother. Oh my god,
what's our next question, Joseph. Okay, it is from at.
Her name was Carmen zero six two one will hashtag
Benito Kardashian beyond the next season of Keeping Up with
(22:59):
the Kardashians. All right, I guess that's all the time
we have to do. Also, my secret handle is her
name was Carmen, Joseph, I just tweeted us. Yeah, okay,
let's set the stage because not everybody follows internet gossip
(23:20):
as closely as I think the three of us do.
So for somebody that's listening to this is going, what
the hell are they talking about? This? Whole episode. So,
for the record, Bad Bunny and Kendall Jenner were spotted
here in La together leaving a restaurant. Additionally, he was
spotted with a phone case that is the same phone
case that Kendall Jenner has been using for months now,
(23:42):
prompting people to think that perhaps she gave him that
as a gift. So we are connecting a lot of
very loose thoughts, but the Internet our interest to speak.
We want to know are they or aren't they? So
I'm not really as curious about Kendall as I am
with Where is his girlfriend Gabriela? On his arm? That
(24:06):
is where I'm at, like literally on his arm. It's
just too weird to have Kendall. And then they him
and Gabriella are like, I don't know, something's weird. Are
they soulmates? Is that what you're trying to say? How
dare you? First of all, me and him are soulmates,
so that's just not true. I'm just curious where is she?
(24:27):
Where is gabriel Where has she been? We don't know
anything about the specifics of their relationship because they only
tell us what they want to tell us. And you know,
there have been rumors that he was seeing this person.
This person was blown out to go here he was
seeing courtside with another woman, and whatever, his relationship is
(24:47):
the least of my concerns. As all, I'll say, as
long as he continues to make great music, continue doing
great things. Love. Look, he could be really really modern,
kind of like the gays where they're in open relationships.
Maybe he's in an thin relationship. I mean, if he is,
I would love that for him. You know, respect especially
that's very taboo within like couples these days, and I
(25:09):
think that's something that a lot of them could benefit from.
Honey Heath taboo, Yeah, exactly. And he he loves to
push the envelope. Hello the Joe Peel solo video, like
he literally dressin drag and started a lot of different
conversations about masculinity and what it means to be a
partner to someone in all of these different music videos,
especially the metro gunto where he literally got married to
(25:31):
where this is why we probably living her life. Yeah, well, Mois,
this is why we love having in TWA. I think
you bring up such a good point, Like he is
a conversation starter, right, he is a thought starter. He's
definitely a thought leader in the Latino community, which is
like dominated by so much toxic masculinity from every single angle.
And he did say this about their relationship. He said,
(25:52):
right now, we are best friends. If she wants to
have a boyfriend, she can because we're best friends. Just
as if I wanted to have a girlfriend, I can
because we're best friends. But neither one of them. Because
we're best friends, we can do anything we want because
we're best friends. Of course, neither one of them have
actually commented beyond that. And like you said, we just
saw at the Grammys that Gabiella's eyes are literally tattooed
(26:16):
on beneath those arms. So whatever they have, but let's
be honest, it's her eyes. I matched it up with
the video frame, micrmes, it is her eyes. It is
our job. Yeah, me and the TikTok slews did a matchup.
We'd ran forensics on it. Those are Gabille's eyes. Okay,
I like opened her iPhone with a tattoo. It works.
(26:37):
I just wanted to make that clear because the bad
Bunny fans will come for me if we don't give
them all of the information. So just you guys, know
they're not on the outs. There was no big fallout.
I think they are in their own place. And by
the way, not every relationship needs labels to exist and
be successful. So we can take a page out of
Bad Bunny's book and let's just not define anything like
(26:57):
that's the life I live to be honest, Yes I
am undefined. I know, I know. But if he was
Kendall Junner's boyfriend, hot fucking damn. Okay, it's that time
in the show where we want to the little game
with you boys. As we know you're a very skilled wordsmith,
just like Bad Bunny, so we wanted to test your
(27:18):
ability with a little game called lyric or Lie. Joseph
is going to read a sentence and you decide whether
it's a real Bad Bunny lyric or just a made
up line. Okay, Joseph, give it to him. Are you ready?
Here we go. Okay, I guess I'm ready. Me and me. Okay,
you're not a nun and I'm not an altar boy.
You have me crazy. Your ass is really naughty. I
(27:41):
think that's a Bad Bunny lyric. Oh Okay, I got one.
It's probably gonna be the only one I get. I'm ready.
This is my favorite one because this is me. She
brought her friends. They're not as pretty as her, That's
why she brought them. It's kind of giving that Drake
line in work, like if you had a twinn, I
(28:01):
would still choose you. But I think that this is
also a bad bunk laring. Oh my god, I love
that line. If that's my line, bad bunny and co.
If you guys want to borrow that line, I wrote that,
oh credit on his next album. I'm obsessed with this line. Okakay,
(28:28):
in the private jet a fucking the sky today, I
want a whore a model. Um excuse me? That lyric
is wild. Yeah, I know. I was like, has he
said this before? I'm sure he has. This definitely sounds
like something he would say. What. No, I'm not going
to influence. He's just kidding. I take it back. I
feel like it doesn't even make sense, Like I like,
think about translate that into Spanish, like how did we
(28:50):
get from? Like what? No, y'all are just handing it
to me at this place. I don't think this is
