Speaker 3 (01:44):
The word will be fulfilled. In our last story, we
learned about the plot to kill Jesus being set into
motion by Judas. Jesus during the Last Supper, identified his
betrayal as Judas. He washed his deciple's feet, telling them
to serve one another as he had served them, and
(02:04):
gave them a new command to remember him when they
eat together and take communion until he returns. In this story,
we will learn about the agonizing heart of Jesus, his
resolved to save us, and his desire to have his
disciples near him. In the last hour. We also see
Judas again coming with a small army to arrest Jesus
(02:27):
as inspired by the Gospels.
Speaker 2 (02:32):

(03:14):
In our last time together, we heard of the Passover meal,
in which Jesus washed his disciples feet, giving them and
us a model of servanthood. He also identified his betrayer,
Judas Iscariot, who filled with satan, departed from the group
to do this terrible thing of giving Jesus up for sacrifice. Finally,
(03:36):
we heard how Jesus gave new meaning to the elements
of the Passover meal. This passover meal transitions to the
Last Supper and the Lord's Supper that we practiced today
as Christians, because the blood of Jesus Christ is represented
in the fruit of the vine in the cup, and
the bread represents the body of the Lord which was
(03:57):
given and is given for us. Today will find Jesus
filled with sorrow going to the Father in prayer because
he knows his time is nearing. And then he submits
his will to do the will of God while he
desires to be spared from the great suffering of taking
the sin of the world upon himself. He prays, not
my will, but your will be done. The Cross of
(04:21):
Christ looms large as we begin today's reading, So let's
listen reverently to the word of God.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
In the cool of the night, Jesus could hear the
faint sound of the festival happening in the distance. Quietness
settled in as the disciples walked further away from the city,
up to the Mount of Olives among the trees. With
his disciples trailing shortly behind him, Jesus spoke, you will
all run away because of me tonight, for it is
(04:52):
written I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of
the flock will be scattered. Peter, with the same bri
cash and bold tone he often used, said, they may
all fall away, Lord, but I will not. I would
die for you, Oh Peter, if only you knew what
was going to happen, Jesus must have thought, He answered Peter,
(05:15):
and said, before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you would
have already denied. Knowing me. Three times, Peter and the
others continued to affirm to Jesus that they would never
do such a thing. Yet Jesus would go through what
was about.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
To happen alone.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
He would gladly do it too, for the joy set
before him. He would endure it all for their sake
and for the sake of the world. Jesus led them
to a garden called Gethsemone. There Jesus would anguish over
what was about to happen. He told his disciples to
wait for him while he prayed. Then he took Peter,
(05:55):
James and John to go further with him. My soul
is filled with sorrow even to death. Remain here with
me and keep watch. Jesus walked ahead a little further
and fell to his knees before God. No one could
truly know the depth of Jesus's dialogue with God. That night,
the Father and the Son spoke to each other with
(06:16):
a bond that had preceded time itself. Jesus knew that
he was going to be taken, and he would be
offered up as a sacrifice for the redemption of mankind.
Gazing into heaven, Jesus knelt before his God and asked, Father,
if you are willing take this cup from me? Nevertheless,
not my will, but yours be done. It was not
(06:40):
just the cross Jesus was speaking of, but also the
cup of wrath he would endure so the world wouldn't
have to. This led Jesus to sweat blood in anguish.
He prayed, yet God sent him comfort in the form
of an angel. The cup would not be taken away.
Jesus returned after words to find his disciples sleeping. Why
(07:04):
are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not
enter into temptation, For Jesus knew that the events about
to unfold would require them to have faith. Jesus and
the disciples heard sounds of several men in the distance,
carrying weapons, torches, and armor. Jesus did not wait for
them to come to him. Instead, he crossed the brook
(07:26):
and walked towards them. There he met Judas. Judas ran
to Jesus and embraced him, greeting's rabbi. Judas said, then
he kissed him. Jesus saw Judas as he truly was,
and said, Judas, could you betray the son of Man
with a kiss? After this, the armed men surrounded Jesus
(07:48):
with swords drawn and torches blazing. Looking at their faces
illuminated by the flames, Jesus asked, whom do you seek,
Jesus of Nazareth. They responded, sure of who they were
speaking to. Jesus, the maker of heaven and Earth and
the conquering lion of Judah, stood before his pursuers. He
(08:10):
spoke with the voice of God, saying I am He,
and in that instant the dozens of armed soldiers fell
onto their backs, whiplashed by the power of Christ himself. Again,
facing the soldiers, Jesus asked, whom do you seek? Regaining
their footing, now less sure of who they were speaking to,
(08:33):
answered again, saying Jesus of Nazareth. The Lord told them,
I have told you that I was the one you
were looking for, So let these other men go. Therefore,
Jesus's words, saying I have not lost any of the
men you gave me, was fulfilled. The disciples, amazed, confused
(08:54):
and afraid, asked if they should come to Jesus's defense. Peter,
without asking, sprang into action. He drew his sword and
ran towards the men with righteous anger in his voice.
Aiming for the head of a servant near by, he
cut off his ear, sending him screaming on to the
floor with blood spewing from the servant's ear. Jesus raised
his voice yet again. Put your sword back into its place, Peter,
(09:17):
For those who live by the sword will die by
the sword. Again, he looked at Peter with intensity and honesty.
Do you think that I cannot ask my father to
send more than twelve legions of angels to save me?
But how then will I fulfill the scriptures? Jesus then
looked at the armed men and the priests behind them.
(09:41):
Do you come to me with swords and clubs like
you would a criminal? Why did you not come to
seize me while I was teaching in the temple. Jesus
knew why. They knew what they were doing was an
act to happen in the shadows. Jesus then knelt down
to the servant writhing on the floor. His name was Malchus.
(10:02):
Jesus touched Malchus and healed him before everyone. The men
then took Jesus and arrested him. The disciples, unsure what
to do and afraid, ran in different directions outward lya
it would have seemed as if Jesus was being taken
forcibly to the temple. Yet Jesus went willingly, with intent
(10:22):
and love for all mankind. He began the process of
offering up his own life. Bound and tied, yet not trapped,
Jesus was brought to the temple of the high priest Caiaphas,
where hundreds of people had gathered to accuse him.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
We opened today's reading with Jesus and Peter in conversation.
Jesus knew that what was to come would strike fear
into his followers, and they would run in fear and terror. Peter,
strong willed and hardheaded as ever, insisted that though others
may leave, that he would never abandon Jesus. You can
count on me, Jesus, said Peter. Jesus told Peter that
(11:07):
before the next morning he would deny him not once,
but three times. Peter and the others insisted that they
would never leave, but Jesus knew what was coming. It
would be a lonely night of pain and suffering. Then
Jesus took the disciples to a garden, the Garden of Guessemone,
to pray. He told them to stay and wait for him,
(11:29):
and then he took three of his closest disciples a
little ways away and with Peter James and John within earshot.
Jesus began to pour out his heart to God. This
was going to be excruciating, so if there was any
other way, Jesus asked the Father to release him and
somehow take away the cup of suffering. And yet in
(11:53):
the midst of that Christ committed himself to do the
will of the Father. And when he asked for the
cup to be taken away from him, that cup which
represents the dregs of sin of all the world, What
was in that cup was the sin of every person
who ever lived. This is why Jesus turned away from
drinking the cup. And yet he said, not my will, Father,
(12:15):
but your will be done. This surrender would prepare him
for the sacrifice that he would give for the whole world,
to all who would believe in him. It's impossible for
us to imagine the depth of pain that Jesus would
be feeling experiencing that night. He was about to endure death,
but not just physical death. He was to experience spiritual
(12:37):
death when he would die on the cross the sin
bearer and giving up his life and experiencing the wrath
of a holy God. His anguish was so deep that
Jesus began to sweat like drops of blood. This was
not figurative language, and we know that some individuals, when
under extreme stress, can actually sweat blood ud. That's how
(13:01):
broken and troubled our Lord was. And yet he was
willing for you and me to endure the excruciating pain,
the spiritual pain of what was yet to come. Though
the father did not take the cup away, he did
not leave his son without comfort. In Luke twenty two,
verse forty three, we read this, and there appeared to
him an angel from heaven strengthening him. In our own lives,
(13:26):
there are times when we pray, God, take away this cup,
take away this heart, take away this pain, and yet
the pain remains. But God promises us that he will
always be there for us to comfort us and strengthen us.
As we walk with him. He may send angels. His comfort.
The comfort of the Holy Spirit is there with us.
(13:47):
We can know that He never leaves us or forsakes us.
Just as he took care of his darling son Jesus,
he will take care of us in Christ. Jesus then
rose and found his disciples sleeping. He awakened them and
told them to pray that they would not fall into temptation,
and though they would not face the same challenges in
suffering as Jesus, this night was not going to be
(14:10):
easy for them either. Even as our Lord prepared to
go to the cross, he ministered to those in his care.
While they were still in the garden, Judas arrived along
with Roman soldiers and religious leaders who had come to
seize Jesus. Judas approached Jesus and kissed his cheek, signaling
(14:30):
to the soldiers that this was their man, and in effect,
Judas kissed life goodbye. He kissed Jesus, who is the
way of the truth and the life, but he also
kissed his own life goodbye, and sealed and settled his fate.
Jesus spoke calmly and gently to the soldiers, asking who
they were seeking. He responded, I am he. That's a
(14:54):
powerful statement, it was, and I am statement. And when
he made it, some of them were taking off their
feet and thrown to the ground. Even in these moments,
the words of Christ were filled with power and strength.
Peter again acts brashly. He grabs a sword and managed
to cut off the ear of Malchus, servant of one
(15:14):
of the high priests, Jesus then rebuked Peter and then
touched the man, healing his ear. If anyone still expected
Jesus to rise up as a conquering king to overthrow
the government, all hope was lost at this point, as
he silently surrendered to the will of the Father and
went with the accusers to drink the cup that the
Father had given him. Indeed, it looked like all hope
(15:37):
was lost, but God was about to bring the greatest
hope to all the world. Jesus, how we thank you
that you surrendered your will to the will of the Father,
that you gave your life to fulfill your purpose and
plan on earth, and that is to die on the
cross for our sins. Thank you for this good news
of salvation, that if we put our faith and trust
(15:59):
in you, by repenting of our sins and receiving you
as Lord and Savior, that all of our sins can
be forgiven, that you will live in us, and that
we will live with you forever in heaven. We thank
you for the hope that you have provided for us
at the cross and in the power of your resurrection.
In Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you for listening to today's
