Speaker 1 (00:02):
Bin News this hour Doug Davis coming up in a
follow up story from last week. Today, the NAACP and
the SELC announces the filing of a federal lawsuit over
Elon musk XAI data center in Memphis. Also, Chicago Mayor
Brandon Johnson held a news conference today following President Trump's
threat to unleash more military force on democratic run sanctuary cities.

(00:24):
But first, here's bin News Now.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
In Charleston, South Carolina, the Emmanuel Am Church is marking
ten years since nine black churchgoers were killed by self
proclaimed white supremacist Dylan Ruth.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
You can tell the power of this sanctuary by the
simple fact that some people are threatened by it and
want to take it away. Ugly racist hate is an evil.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Now thirty years old, Rufe remains on death row after
being convicted of murder and hate crimes. R Kelly's lawyer
say he overdosed last week after prison staff allegedly forced
extra medications on him. He collapsed the next day was
hospitalized for two days. They're now asking for home confinement,
claiming officials are conspiring with inmates to kill him, and
for the first time, the NAACP will not invite a

(01:09):
sitting president to its annual convention. President Derek Johnson says
Trump is attacking democracy and civil rights. The White House
fire back, accusing the group of spreading hate. The convention.
It's next month in Charlotte. I'm Amber Payton with BI
in News. Now back to you, doug Hey.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Thanks Amber. You know, for generations, black communities have had
to deal with industrial pollution that caused a multitude of illnesses.
In fact, some black neighborhoods are still being affected by
that today, and such could be the case in Memphis, Tennessee,
where the NAACP and others feel Elon Musk's new XAI
Memphis facility is in direct violation of the Clean Air

(01:44):
RAGT and today the civil rights organization, along with the
Southern Environmental Law Center are standing up to Musk and
a filed a federal lawsuit in evor to protect the
lives of Memphiss mostly Black residents. Kermit Moore, president of
the Memphis Chapter of the NAACP, made the announcement when
he addressed the media.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Our members voted to support the residents who live in
these communities and stand with them against environmental and justice.
This is a policy failure for a facility to operate
three hundred and sixty four days without a permit being approved.
This opens the floodgates for more data centers to drain

(02:24):
our community of resources and further polluted.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Black state representative Justin Pearson was there and says emissions
from gas turbines could harm public health. Patrick Anderson of
the Southern Environmental Law Center says Memphis deserves honesty, transparency,
and clean air after state leaders presented new findings on
XAI turbines. Meanwhile, when President Trump turned his attention to Chicago, Illinois,
calling for more ice arrested military personnel, Mayor Brandon Johnson

(02:52):
stated his citizens that he will not be bullied. During
a press conference earlier today, Johnson fielded questions from reporters
and stayed deaded. He has received no word if any
additional federal military forces will indeed enter his city.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
And if you're asking me if this president is going
to work with city leaders, it's clear that he's not
interested in doing that. He's not even interested in working
with Congress, which this is where these issues should be
taken up. They have not moved on anything substantive at
the federal level. There's no effort for comprehensive immigration reform
that could help repair a broken system. There's no commitment

(03:26):
to help transform our economy. There's no commitment to invest
in our public education system. The only thing that we
received from this president is his ungoing to attack against
equity diversity.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
While Trump's plan is sparking protests across Chicago and the nation,
local leaders are standing up to the president, ensuring that
ICE doesn't turn black neighborhoods into military enforcement zones. And finally,
Kentucky Governor Andy Bursheer unveiled a new African American Heritage
Trail on Monday, highlighting more than fifty sites that reflect
the contributions of Black Entuckians to the state and the nation.

(03:57):
The trail includes locations like the Muhammed Dolly Center, Berea College,
and the Abraham Lincoln birth Place. Officials say the initiative
helps elevate often overlook stories through meaningful cultural experiences. Stay informed,
