Speaker 1 (00:02):
For BN News this hour, I'm Ester Dillard coming up.
Black House Minority leader Hanking Jeffrey says President Trump is
acting like a racial arsonist. Vpjd Vance is calling Texas
redistricting necessary in an attempt at fairness against democratic jerry mandering,
and Virginia leaders are denouncing a racist sign aimed at
black coubernatorial candidate Winsome Earl Sears. But first, here's BN

(00:26):
News Now.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
The mayor of Saint Petersburg, Florida, is ending a battle
over street art that includes Black Lives Matter. Mayor said
the city tried to get an exemption. The black mayor
says the city relented in order to keep millions in
state and federal transportation funding.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
As a mayor of our city, I will not risk
these essential investments in a fight that I don't believe
we can win.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
He says. The Florida Department of Transportation will paint over
the murals by September fourth. The White House is touting
over one thousand arrestinents taking over the nation's capital earlier
this month. According to the White House, one hundred and
eleven firearms have been seized and six known gang members
have been arrested, and in January, Southwest Airlines is changing
its seating policy. Larger passengers who cannot be accommodated in

(01:10):
a single plane seat will be required to purchase a
second seat ahead of time. If the extra room isn't needed,
a refund can be requested after the flight. I'm mister
Jordan with b I in News Now back to you.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Esther Black House Minority leader Hakim Jeffries criticized President Trump
for his announcement that he plans to conduct a review
of the Smithsonian Museums. President Trump posted on truth Social
last week that the Smithsonian is out of control. He
said there's nothing about brightness and too much about how
horrible our country is and how bad slavery was. Jeffries

(01:44):
addressed the comments on CNN's State of the Union.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
There is no good aspect of slavery, and so Donald
Trump is once again behaving like a racial arsoness and
it's extraordinary that he would make such a historically ignorant statement.
The Smithsonians should continue to hold the line and make
sure that this very painful part of American history is

(02:08):
not erased, but is understood by everyone across this country
and throughout the world.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Meanwhile, Vice President j d Vance is defending the new
congressional map recently approved by the Texas Senate. Appearing on
NBC's Meet the Press, Vans claimed that democratic jerrymandering has
made these redistricting efforts necessary.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
All we're doing, frankly, is trying to make the situation
a little bit more fair on a national scale. The
Democrats have jerrymandered their states really aggressively. We think there
are opportunities to push back against that, and that's really
all we're doing.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
The Texas Tribune says the map was adopted early Saturday
on a party line vote over fierce Democratic opposition. President
Trump has called for the new map in Texas to
increase the Republican House majority by five seats ahead of
the midterm elections. Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hockem Jeffreys is
hinting at the possibility of mobileife redistricting efforts in more

(03:02):
blue states. In an interview with CNN's State of the Union,
Jeffrey says Democrats would be ready if more Republican led
states aim to redraw maps in their favor.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
We will continue to respond when necessary across the country.
Right now, this has happened in Texas. California has responded,
let's see what comes next.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Just days before that approval, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed
to measure that calls for a special election aiming to
redraw state maps that would most likely give Democrats five
additional House seats. The state wide vote will be held
in November. And finally, in Virginia, leaders are denouncing a
racist sign displayed outside a school board meeting where black

(03:45):
gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earl Sears was speaking. Fox News reports
the sign read, Hey, Winsome, if trans can't share your bathroom,
then blacks can't share my water fountain. Earl Sears called
it disgusting but not surprising. Her opponent and former Congresswoman
Abigail Spanberger, also condemned it as racist and abhorrent. Stay informs,
