Bin News this hour, Doug Davis coming up. House Minority
leader Hakim Jeffries returns to Capitol Hill with a message
on the economy, while Trump flirts at a housing fix.
Plus House Republicans today rally behind Trump's federal police surgeon DC,
while protesters called for dignity and local control and still

news and it's not good. But first, here's bin News now.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
President Trump says federal forces will intervene in Chicago, suggesting
the National Guard may be sent in, though he did
not give a timeline. He claimed black residents are asking
for help.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Most of them were African American who were black, and
they were saying, please, please please.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Let the President send that these were people from Chicago.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
He went on to criticize the city's high murder rate
and pointed to what he called success with the Guard
in Washington, DC. Black Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott is praising
a sharp drop in violent crime, with twenty twenty five
one pace for the fewest homicides and fifty years. The
city has seen ninety one killings through August, down nearly
thirty percent from last year, along with a twenty one
percent drop in shootings. And former black college basketball coach

(01:09):
and Nike executive George Raveling has died at eighty eight
after a battle with cancer. Inducted into both the College
Basketball and Nate Smith Halls of Fame, Raveling later became
Nike's Global basketball Marketing director and famously urged Michael Jordan
to sign with the brand. I'm Amber Payton with BI
in News. Now back to you, Doug, all.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Right, thank you. In DC House, Democratic leader Hakim Jeffries
held a news conference as lawmakers return to Congress. He
laid out a clear agenda lower housing costs, project healthcare,
and stop what he called Republican sabotage.

Speaker 4 (01:40):
That's what the Republican one Big Ugly Bill was all about,
a past legislation that hurts everyday Americans in order to
reboard their billionaire donors with massive tax breaks. Our message
to the American people is clear, you deserve bett.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Jeffries pointed to the rising costs of rent, groceries, and electricity,
saying Democrats are focused on making life more affordable, and
he also warned of a government shut down if Republicans
push partisan spending cuts. Meanwhile, outside of Capitol Hill today,
as protesters held signs like no troops in our streets,
a House Republican Study Committee held a press conference to

(02:17):
support President Trump's federal will takeover of policing in DC.
They praise the deployment of National Guard troops and federal agents,
ciding over fifteen hundred arrests at a drop in serious crimes.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
DC has seen major improvements in the incidents of crime
in the last three weeks with the help of federal intervention.
Homicide rates are down by thirty eight percent, Robbery is
down by sixty two percent, the total violent crime is
down forty five percent, and carjackings are down seventy eight percent.
Other governors and mayors should look at these improvements and

(02:49):
welcome support from the government to keep their citizens safe.
It is up to the governor of each state to
decide if deployment of their National Guard is needed to
help decrease violence and prioritize safety.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Republicans are floating around legislation that would keep military presence
in DC past the thirty day limit and to replicate
their concept to other cities like Chicago. Critics are warning
that this could normalize federal intervention in local policing and Foley.
HBCU St. Augustine's University in Raleigh, North Carolina, has announced
the sudden resignation of interim President doctor Marcus H. Burgess,

(03:24):
effective immediately. His departure follows pressure from the Safe SAU Coalition,
which has demanded structural reform and accountability from SSU leadership.
Benjamin Johnson at the coalition tells ABC eleven Raleigh.

Speaker 5 (03:37):
As these leadership positions have changed, we need to know qualifications,
We need to know what was the reason that they
were selected, and we don't know those answers.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
And the timing has raised eyebrows across the HBCU community,
especially given the university's ongoing financial and accreditation challenges. Verges
took over leadership of the university in December of twenty
twenty three, during a period marked by financial instability and
accreditation challenges. Stay informed, stay connected, and subscribe follow BI
