Speaker 1 (01:13):
Thank you. As President Trump quietly backing away from supporting Ukraine,
well that's what some lawmakers, including Representative African American Gregory Meeks,
who's a ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, believe.
He said, Trump's latest comment he made on Ukraine Wednesday
is just lip service. Trump mentioned that he believes Ukraine,
with supports from NATO and the EU, can fight and win.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Look, it's to me, a lot of empty words. The
key thing it seemed to me he's throwing his hands up.
He's saying that Ukraine can win with our European allies.
He's not saying that the United States is going to
stand with Ukraine. He's not saying that he's going to
come to Congress and ask Congress for the appropriate appropriations.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Meets, like other foreign policy experts say, Trump has a
track record of praising Russian President Putin, is somewhat wavering
support of NATO have raised concerns about where he really stands. Meanwhile,
the family of Takia Young, eight twenty one year old
pregnant black woman shot and killed by police in Blending
township outside of Columbus, Ohio, filed a federal civil rights
(02:17):
lawsuit against the municipality and it's police chief.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
She's the victim here and we demand accountability for the
loss of two precious lives to Kayo and her unborn daughter.
Speaker 5 (02:29):
And the officer in.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
This department must be held accountable for his actions that
escalated this encounter and led to the loss of two
precious lives.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
That's the attorney for the family, African American Sean Walton,
speaking during a news conference some time ago. The shooting
happened in August twenty twenty three outside of Kroger grocery store.
The incident occurred when she attempted to drive off when
approached by officer Connor Grubb, who responded to a shoplifting call.
Grub shot through the window, hitting Young in the chest. Grub,
who pled not guilty to charges of murder and record
(03:00):
this homicide, will soon face the jury. Young's family says
the department failed to properly train and supervise its officers,
and finally Florida's new open carry law officially takes effect today.
That means anyone who's legally allowed to own a firearm
can now carry it openly in public, as long as
it's in a holster, waistband or slain. And for black residents,
(03:20):
the death of Trayvon Martin exposed how laws meant to
protect can be weaponized. So the jury is still out
on this one for us, and with all the mass shootings,
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd tells FLA News Tampa, there
needs to be updated measures put in place.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
I have spoken with the President of the Senate, the
Speaker of the House, the chief of staff for the
governor and explain look we need to address through the
legislative process, tightening up the rules.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Some lawmakers are calling for tougher background checks, red flag laws,
and limits on assault weapons. The law still bans firearms
in government building, schools, polling places, and some private businesses. Historically,
open carrier laws have not been enforced equally, Black gun
owners face more scrutiny, more stops, and more danger even
when we follow the laws, stay informed, stay connected, and subscribed.
